Sanford implodes, admits affair

I had written a post about the saga of the curious case of the missing Governor, Mark Sanford, but events have surpassed my original thoughts. It now turns out that the Appalachian Trail story was a ruse to cover a meeting with Sanford’s mistress in Argentina, which makes Sanford the most famous Republican on foreign affairs at the moment:
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford aknowledged Wednesday that he was carrying on an affiar with a woman in Argentina when he disappeared from his office last week, only to resurface this morning.
Sanford said he would resign as chairman of the Republican Governors Association and asked for forgiveness from his wife and four sons.
Safe to say that after having his official spokesman lie to the press to cover the affair, Sanford’s career in national politics has just ended. It’s a shame that it came to this, but Sanford brought it on himself.
Once again, this clip from South Park seems appropriate:
The lesson: If you want to have a career in national politics, keep it in your pants. If you want to conduct affairs, stay out of politics. If you use your public office to lie to your constituents and your family, you deserve everything coming your way. No sniveling.

He needs to go. His press conference was a feeding frenzy the likes of which I’ve never seen. He was a poster boy for the Republicans in the wake of the stimulus and has dealt his own party a nasty self-inflicted wound. Go, Governor Sanford. Go now. For the sake of your party, go. I wish you and your wife recovery and healing. But go.

I’m so proud of my Governor who is confessing he was boinking his mistress on Father’s Day. My favorite part is bringing God and sins into this…only because he got busted. I’d have more respect for him if he did this on his own due to his faith and belief in truth.

Call it a sixth sense, but there was something about his “disappearance” that smelt foul to me. I held my tongue because I don’t like making wild accusations . . . but a person does not fall off the proverbial grid unless there is something to hide.

Lesson (for me): The most obvious explanation is usually the most obvious explanation.
I still admire Gov. Sanford for his fiscal conservatism and always will. What he did in standing up to Obama and the egregious Federal over-reach is nothing short of gutsy. Social conservatives will be disappointed for sure. This should make for an interesting debate within our party about the definition of conservatism.
SouthernGent on June 24, 2009 at 2:59 PM
Hard to say I’m surprised. The story was odd from the beginning. And really, leaving his family on Father’s Day?
I don’t feel sorry for him.

The insufferable Jerry Taylor on NRO was touting this moron as he was bashing Palin just a few weeks ago.
Like I’ve said before: 2012 will be a race between Sarah, a flip-flopper from Massachusetts and a snakesoil salesman from Arkansas. Choose wisely.

Cool. Another Beltway Republican fubars his own career, while simultaneously sticking a knife in the back of the slowly surging other members of his party heading into 2010.
Just curious: how many more dimwits like this or Foley are we going to have to endure going into the next election cycle? I’m just cynical enough to think that the number will suffice to keep Pelosi as Speaker.

I think we need a bigger push for polygamy. Good people are being thrown out for ‘marital indiscretions’. I don’t think I’ll ever get married. That way I won’t ever be accused of ‘cheating’.
I think he wanted to be caught. He could have always gone somewhere discreet. But Argentina does sound fun. It’s too bad that it disqualifies him.
But I still think that Newt is going to be the next R nominee though. I believe his conversion to Catholicism was the political move of the century.

Unbelievably stupid action by a self-righteous git.
Sanford was always one of those guys who you knew was going to self-destruct because he failed to understand that as a Republican, the rules are different. Democrats can cheat, steal, lie, and get caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy and nothing will happen to them. In fact, the latter might get the Democrat a rush of contributions from NAMBLA. That can’t happen to a Republican.
Sanford, the supposedly brilliant leading light of the conservative movement, couldn’t keep John Thomas where he belonged.
Wonder why Allahpundit, et al, didn’t notice this kind of thing while they were busy jumping all over Palin? Hmmmm?
