Open thread: Hey, who’s up for an hour-long infomercial on ObamaCare?

10 p.m. ET on ABC. What better way to wind down from terror in Tehran and heart-ache in South Carolina than by watching Obama play pattycake with Gibson and Sawyer? The World News Tonight audience has already been duly informed that “the need is obvious” for health-care reform. Now it’s The One’s time to shine.
And he’d better shine awfully bright.
A majority of Americans see government action as critical to controlling runaway health-care costs, but there is broad public anxiety about the potential impact of reform legislation and conflicting views about the types of fixes being proposed on Capitol Hill, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Most respondents are “very concerned” that health-care reform would lead to higher costs, lower quality, fewer choices, a bigger deficit, diminished insurance coverage and more government bureaucracy. About six in 10 are at least somewhat worried about all of these factors, underscoring the challenges for lawmakers as they attempt to restructure the nation’s $2.3 trillion health-care system…
Survey questions that equate the public option approach with the popular, patient-friendly Medicare system tend to get high approval, as do ones that emphasize the prospect of more choices. But when framed with an explicit counterargument, the idea receives a more tepid response. In the new Post-ABC poll, 62 percent support the general concept, but when respondents were told that meant some insurers would go out of business, support dropped sharply, to 37 percent.
Cato’s liveblogging it so check there frequently for libertarian-flavored fact-checking. We’ll have video later in the unlikely event that something important gets said. While you wait, be sure to read David Brooks’s piece yesterday about the Senate’s health-care bill. With even his most trusted RINO allies wavering, The One’s margin for error here is nil.

My teen daughter is wanting to attend medical school, and pursue a career in neurology. She was inspired by a neurologist she saw a few years ago after having a one time seizure, along with her mothers family having several doctors. I really hate the thought that with the way things might go under Obama, she will have to pursue something other than her dream. I am still of the belief that the major reason for the high cost of medicine is the result of lawsuits from trial lawyers awarding ridiculous amounts for pain and suffering. Malpractice insurance alone is outrageous for doctors to pay.
coyoterex on June 24, 2009 at 10:47 PM
Pretty close. If you want to peak at ObamaCare, here’s a story from the NHS in the UK.
Patients forced to wait hours in ambulances parked outside A&E departments
Yep. If ObamaCare were in place, I’d be burying my 79 year old grandmother that was just diagnosed with Stage III ovarian cancer (developed within the last 6-9 months). Instead, she’s already had surgery 3 weeks ago and started chemotherapy today.

Estimates $1 to $2 trillion—but we’re gonna pay for it by reallocating $$$ in the system that are not helping you get healthy. We’re gonna use that money for prevention, IT, and training new GPs.

The way I see it, if that is the case and they force businesses to provide insurance and tell them what they have to offer, contribute towards premium, mandated plans, it is another blow to smaller business. They can not do it and sure as hell not now. That is the crush right there.

She is of the mind that CBS, CNN and NBC are places where journalism still exist. Unfortunately, she believes this is no harm, no foul because everyone can take the bullsh*t apart tomorrow. She forgets that the numbers of folks watching this could actually believe President Skateboard, and call their Congressmorons requesting support for death care.
At this juncture, between this and the whole alliance with Hamas, Syria, Iran, Venezuela, etc. nations of doom; I guess we should all break out into a “Death to Amerika!” chant. You know, so we can fit in with the President’s peeps and all!
I soooo hope we can stop this mess!
Meanwhile I am watching, “Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” on TCM.

Health IT? I guess that’s the snazzy expression for computerized health records.

Michael F. Cannon: Yes, Mr. President, the Congressional Budget Office can’t be certain that your health care reforms will reduce spending because there is no evidence that your health care reforms will reduce spending.

Michael D. Tanner: The House is currently considering a VAT, a payroll tax increase, and an income tax surcharge. The senate wants to tax soft drinks, beer, and employer provided health benefits. Somehow, the president talks about paying for his plan without mentioning any of those. To read more about the proposed tax hikes, see here.

how can this not add to the deficit? We have a deficit now in large part due to existing entitlement programs like medicare and medicaid…so where will the money come from?
Terrye on June 24, 2009 at 10:53 PM
I’m a physician and I’m not watching it. Just read through the comments and knew “Lawyers” or “Attorneys” or “Legal reform” would be no where to be found.
I have a question for parents out there with exceptional student children – would you want them to go to medical school? I know many physicians who are telling THEIR kids NO. If you still have a capitalist bone in your body go to law school and get a nice house. KUDOS to the humanitarian who “loves to heal the sick” and sees a patient for 45 minutes and collects a Medicare check for six dollars for the visit. (I know of what I speak)

Something to notice, for those watching:
The ABC News graphics/animations at the beginning and end of each segment (going into and out of commercial) all use the most-identifiable Obama campaign font, Gotham.
It’s also the font in the graphics running at the bottom of the screen throughout the broadcast.
Obama’s most famous phrases – “YES WE CAN,” “CHANGE,” HOPE” etc. were all in this typeface.
Interesting choice, ABC “News.”

AnninCA on June 24, 2009 at 10:52 PM
I want to see private insurers be more competitive, I am not a glutton. But, any gov’t option will NOT have to turn a profit, so odds are, it will be cheaper (and offer less, except more rationing), so what are the odds employers, especially smaller ones, are going to force employees into the public option?
Chrissake, did I really just have to explain that?

Sorry, I like my internist. He’s board certified, he interned at Mayo, and his staff is just fine.

Well I have dealt with the government enough to know that it does not impress me. And while you might not like insurance companies, most Americans are happy with the care they have. They do not want to change.
I find the fact that Obama can not give anyone a straight answer about what this will cost and how they intend to pay for it to be disquieting. This is not about providing care to people, this is about providing votes to Democrats.

There is a Russian speaking EKG tech at my local hospital who is a male and obviously from the Soviet Union. He is a fully trained physician over there. Making a better living here as an EKG tech. Says there over 80 percent of physicians are women and get about as much respect as you’d give an auto mechanic or bakery attendant. Welcome to the future. I saw 5 minutes of this crapfest and I FULLY EXPECTED Obama to solve the issues of student loans with “well, you’re not going to HAVE to go to medical school with my plan.”

The value of the stock that Empire expects to sell later this year is widely expected to exceed $1 billion, the sum that is at the heart of the dispute. Per my post at the top of the page, I do believe that tort reform is needed more than anything to reduce health care costs. As for my middle daughter that is interested in a career in neurology, I will support her if that is what she chooses to pursue, although I will be honest with her about the frustrations she might face. Luckily she has one aunt that is a GP, one that is a RN, and a great uncle that is a plastic surgeon, so she will be able to make an informed decision whether to continue on this path or not.
Enact tort reform first, then see how that reflects on costs. As a vet with access to the VA system, I would rather pay out of my own pocket than depend upon health care run by the government.

Obama is not serious about this until he’s prepared to beat the plaintiffs’ lawyers lobby up over medical malpractice reform. Premiums inflate costs, but threat of litigation increases the number of tests run to cover one’s ass.
The other thing I want to hear Obama say is that there will be no exception for unions if they start taxing health care benefits.
BuckeyeSam on June 24, 2009 at 11:05 PM

Oh please? The 72% from a bullshit poll in which 66% of the contacts voted for Obama? That was one poll, an outlier, a dishonest poll and even in that poll support for this kind of system fell below 43% if it would cost more than $500 a year in taxes to support.
I think we can reform health care without bankrupting the country and ruining the system.
From what I hear the state supported system in California is burying the state in debt.
