Open thread: Hey, who’s up for an hour-long infomercial on ObamaCare?

posted at 9:40 pm on June 24, 2009 by Allahpundit

10 p.m. ET on ABC. What better way to wind down from terror in Tehran and heart-ache in South Carolina than by watching Obama play pattycake with Gibson and Sawyer? The World News Tonight audience has already been duly informed that “the need is obvious” for health-care reform. Now it’s The One’s time to shine.

And he’d better shine awfully bright.

A majority of Americans see government action as critical to controlling runaway health-care costs, but there is broad public anxiety about the potential impact of reform legislation and conflicting views about the types of fixes being proposed on Capitol Hill, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Most respondents are “very concerned” that health-care reform would lead to higher costs, lower quality, fewer choices, a bigger deficit, diminished insurance coverage and more government bureaucracy. About six in 10 are at least somewhat worried about all of these factors, underscoring the challenges for lawmakers as they attempt to restructure the nation’s $2.3 trillion health-care system…

Survey questions that equate the public option approach with the popular, patient-friendly Medicare system tend to get high approval, as do ones that emphasize the prospect of more choices. But when framed with an explicit counterargument, the idea receives a more tepid response. In the new Post-ABC poll, 62 percent support the general concept, but when respondents were told that meant some insurers would go out of business, support dropped sharply, to 37 percent.

Cato’s liveblogging it so check there frequently for libertarian-flavored fact-checking. We’ll have video later in the unlikely event that something important gets said. While you wait, be sure to read David Brooks’s piece yesterday about the Senate’s health-care bill. With even his most trusted RINO allies wavering, The One’s margin for error here is nil.

There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling the transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image; make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to the THE OBAMA SOCIALIST NATION UNLIMITED.

I’d rather watch an hour long infomercial on cleansing my colon. I used to admire that Colon Powell fellow.

Right_of_Attila on June 24, 2009 at 10:21 PM

I can’t watch it. If I watch it, I will throw a book through my flat screen, destroying the television, and my blood pressure will be off the chart. This will cause me to call 911 and have an ambulance cart me off to the hospital, where I will wait for six hours to see a nurse practioner that will tell me, after a two minute look see at me blood draw, numerous xrays, and tell me that I am fine and I should see my family doctor. Then, he will hand me a five hundred dollar bill for his services, which will cause me to pass out, another seven hours in the ER, waiting for the nurse practioner to sew up the gash in my head. When I finally get home, my husband will be waiting, pull out the book from his destroyed televsion and bonk me over the head with it, thus causing me to have to call 911 to have the ambulance come and cart me off to the ER to have the nurse practioner to sew up the other side of my head.
No, I can’t afford to watch this bullsh*t!

FBI ‘cracks $50m healthcare scam’

The charges were announced by top officials in Washington
The FBI says it has uncovered a $50m (£30m) scam involving the US healthcare system, making arrests in Florida, Michigan and Colorado.

Fifty-three people have been charged with defrauding Medicare, the government insurance scheme providing care to the elderly and disabled.

Doctors allegedly gave cash to patients to sign paperwork claiming to have had treatments which they were never given.

Medical staff, patients and company executives are among those charged.

A day earlier, police arrested eight people in Miami involved in a separate scheme using fake clinics to generate fraudulent bills of around $100m.

Federal agents say they are investigating almost 2,500 other cases and that fraud is costing American taxpayers billions of dollars every year.

Those in the administration and Congress now working on wider healthcare reforms say building better safeguards will be central to any new system.

President Barack Obama is currently seeking to overhaul the US healthcare system.

Amen. A contributor at NRO named Capretta wrote yesterday that Obama is shifting his position. He’s claiming that the government won’t kick you out of your plan. However, he won’t admit that he’s devising a program that creates the conditions that prompt your employer to drop its plans.

So, in Obama’s world, it will be your mean employer’s fault. Obama holds a gun to your employer’s head and threatens the employer to shoot you. When the employer shoots you, Obama claims he has nothing to do with your murder.

Life will be so wonderful under His Royal Majesty Barack Obama’s American Kingdom.

We will live in homes powered by windmills and solar panels so controlling our weight will be easy as there won’t be enough electricity to power anything more than a small refrigerator. Not enough power for air conditioning in the summer so we will sweat off any excess weight. Not enough power for much in the way of heat in the winter so we will have to do calisthenics to keep half way warm so cardiovascular health should improve immensely. We probably will hardly even even need to get in our Government Motors battery powered golf carts cars to even go to see a doctor.

Have faith, I think this will all work out for the better.

You just know we’re going to find out the truth in the coming days:

- Huh, it turns out nearly everyone – including the self-declared “life-long Republican voters” in the staged, phony audience, were Obama supporters! How did that happen?

- The black, lesbian, single mother of four special needs children who “came here with questions, but real skepticism about Obama’s plan” and “became a believer” actually became a believer during the early days of his primary campaign, as evidenced by the photo of her posing with Obama in Iowa, wearing her Che t-shirt.

- The white, retired, “conservative” GM union auto worker is afraid his cradle-to-grave 100% family insurance plan was going to go down the tubes along with his phony job, and “sure is glad that President Obama understands the plight of the working man”. He’s also a union steward and Democrat activist, as it turns out.
