Open thread: Hey, who’s up for an hour-long infomercial on ObamaCare?

10 p.m. ET on ABC. What better way to wind down from terror in Tehran and heart-ache in South Carolina than by watching Obama play pattycake with Gibson and Sawyer? The World News Tonight audience has already been duly informed that “the need is obvious” for health-care reform. Now it’s The One’s time to shine.
And he’d better shine awfully bright.
A majority of Americans see government action as critical to controlling runaway health-care costs, but there is broad public anxiety about the potential impact of reform legislation and conflicting views about the types of fixes being proposed on Capitol Hill, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Most respondents are “very concerned” that health-care reform would lead to higher costs, lower quality, fewer choices, a bigger deficit, diminished insurance coverage and more government bureaucracy. About six in 10 are at least somewhat worried about all of these factors, underscoring the challenges for lawmakers as they attempt to restructure the nation’s $2.3 trillion health-care system…
Survey questions that equate the public option approach with the popular, patient-friendly Medicare system tend to get high approval, as do ones that emphasize the prospect of more choices. But when framed with an explicit counterargument, the idea receives a more tepid response. In the new Post-ABC poll, 62 percent support the general concept, but when respondents were told that meant some insurers would go out of business, support dropped sharply, to 37 percent.
Cato’s liveblogging it so check there frequently for libertarian-flavored fact-checking. We’ll have video later in the unlikely event that something important gets said. While you wait, be sure to read David Brooks’s piece yesterday about the Senate’s health-care bill. With even his most trusted RINO allies wavering, The One’s margin for error here is nil.

Republicans have a few people who screw up like Ensign and Sanford, Democrats had a president who made them both like choir boys. So, I really don’t think those kind of sad tales will stop Republicans if they have a message that people want to hear.

All of my representatives are democrat, thanks to a bunch of stupid, no account, cheese eating welfare rat, waste of skin, idiots that voted for them, but I think I’ll make a few calls tomorrow. There is nothing more invigorating than arguing with the liberal idiot taking opinions in a democrat’s office.

This is being crammed down or throats and I for one resent it. Doctors are quitting the profession and physician assistants are getting set to take over where actual MD’s leave.
From my point of view the primary beneficiaries of this proposal are undocumented immigrants living across the land.
Currently everyone I know that is “uninsured” has access to health care through existing State health plans.
One friend who lives in Tennessee got a heart stent via TennCare. A relative here in California with a belly ache was given a cat scan and numerous other tests to determine she had pancreatitis, all on Medical.
I am glad she was diagnosed and she will be fine. How will ObamaCare do a better job for my friend and niece?

That has always been a valid point. We are the party with a moral compass. But, I never understood that the Dems earned bragging rights for being the party of NO moral compass. I just can’t imagine having NO moral compass, and being so frikkin angry about frikkin everything, every minute of every day. I am not sure how they live that way.

That’s from an article by Tapper excerpted on MM’s main site.
According to powerlineblog, the Democrats’ proposed plans specifically exempt all federal employees from coverage under the “public plans” being proposed.
Obama and the Democratic congress want to shove the rest of us into a crappy public plan, but they make damn sure that they and their families won’t have to be in it with us. That fact alone should tell everyone everything they need to know about this scam.
Guess what, Obama? The rest of us want our family members to get the very best care too. That’s why we’re not going to support your BS plan.

72%.
OK, dial it down.
How can you guys NOT see this is a major issue and address it.
Can you blame everyone for abandoning the GOP?
Frankly, it’s about like this issue.
You are in such a small minority.
Yet, that’s all that matters. Stick to that.
I have no problem with that as a minority voice.
But that’s not a party.
That’s not a viable political voice in this country.

Ann, I have lived in Canada. I now live in a state that borders Canada. That kind of medical coverage DOES NOT WORK! It makes a mess of medical treatment. Doctors who really care about their patients are leaving Canada. My state’s largest clinics are in cities bordering Canada to serve the Canadians that can’t get proper care in their own country.
Pull your head out of the sand. BO’s plan will ruin our medical community. If you don’t know it, then you just haven’t done your research very well.
This kind of a program ALWAYS FAILS! ALWAYS! Ask the Canadians and Brits.

Wow, wake up and realize that even BO is walking away from the public plan. What we in the minority care about is choice and freedom, small government and respect for life. Included in that respect for life, is a complete contempt for a government bureaucracy that decides when you’ve lived long enough and costs of caring for you exceed your value as a human being.
Obama is losing support of Independents faster than private insurance will lose customers when they have to compete against a government team that is also the referee. It is only a very small minority of even Dems, the liberals, who support single payer plan. Congress knows there is not enough support and that 72% quickly turns to the minority when the facts are laid out to the general public. Government run health care is DOA, which is why the Congress is fumbling to come up with something that won’t bankrupt the country and will provide some more coverage.
Funny too, how Obama ran promising health care touted the benefits of his plan, dissing McCains and now Congress is fumbling for something they can pass and face the electorate in 2010. Where is that magical Obama plan? Oh yeah there isn’t one.

Ann:
Have they abandoned the GOP? In my state of Indiana where Obama won a half of one percent victory, Mitch Daniels the Republican won by 18%. Not even close. Both parties go and up and down. Look at history.
Most people in this country are not interested in being Europe. They are concerned about the rising cost of health care, but that does not mean they want the federal government to swoop in, take over the system and raise their taxes. There are plans out there that could help, that could create more competition within the private sector. And if they want to federalize health care, the Feds need to reform Medicare and show us that they can make that system work better before they expand it.
The point to that poll you cited is that they felt the need to deliberately lie. They only contacted 24% who said they had voted for McCain. That is front loading the poll. If there really was that kind of support, CBS would not need to do that.
Terrye on June 25, 2009 at 6:52 AM
The public plan was a faux trial balloon. They knew full darn well that wouldn’t fly, so, they trotted that carcass out there to retract after “debate” to look like they are coming to a bipartisan consensus. They are still getting what they want: more hands on health care and a growing sense in the population, possibly over time, that the government has always been involved in healthcare…over a few years it won’t be so bad.
Don’t get gleeful that the public plan is being walked back but Obama. He’s a stupid, evil dictator wannabe and is fully aware of what he wants and will get.
GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO GET THEIR FILTHY, CORRUPT FINGERS AWAY FROM HEALTHCARE PERIOD.
The poor already have medicaid. Fiddle with that.

Mommypundit on June 25, 2009 at 6:53 AM
And if there really was that kind of support Obama would not feel the need to take over the airwaves like some Soviet Premier touting his latest 5 year plan either. In fact if 72% supported nationalized health care..we would have had it years ago.
Terrye on June 25, 2009 at 6:57 AM
This is not a thread hijack, just some filler, since this debate is not about healthcare but about Obama and socialism.
Note the smallness of his character, on display once again for any who will see it. He makes Bush look like a grand statesman, as does John Effing Kerry. How sad for this country that such small men control things. We should change this.
Jaibones on June 25, 2009 at 7:18 AM
Which has the fastest rising costs; health care or education? Even without ObamaScare they are both heavily regulated by the government, which drives up costs and down performance. Certainly don’t want more involvement.
So the Obama show was on last night. Missed it. Much like when Clinton was president; Obama on TV, TV off.

“ObamaCare” Newspeak: Obama’s Antipathy for America.
Obama holds no allegiance to anything outside of his own embodiment, the heinous amalgam of corruption polished by his owners.
Whether the US Congress, the USPS, D.C. Metro, FDIC, Federal Reserve, Social Security, Medicaid/Medicare, Bank Investment Firms, Insurance Industry, or any manufacturing such as GM or Chrysler, GOVERNMENT PERFORMANCE IS A FAILURE. Corruption has permeated our government so thoroughly that our politicians live in a separate universe that regards real citizens as has-beens of no consequence.
The only reason the USA has done as well as we have to date is because of separation between State and Industry. THAT requirement for prosperity and security was already understood unanimously by our founding fathers, which is why it wasn’t stipulated as a bylaw for DUMMIES.
All three branches comprising our Democratic Constitutional Republic have failed to appreciate the prerequisite limitations of their own existence as established by our Exceptional Supreme Law of the Land, the US Constitution.
They have grossly misinterpreted and revised all consideration regarding “separation of Church and State” while progressing towards the Marxist governmental ownership of all things, with a FAILING PERFORMANCE RECORD, A DOOMSDAY DEBT, TAXES LEVIED AGAINST THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE FOR SERVICES NOT RENDERED BUT INSTEAD USED TO BUY MORE POWER while abolishing our fundamental Constitutional Rights.

It makes me want to bang my head against the wall that anyone could seriously think government managed health care is a good idea. A trip to the local DMV would put the idea right out of anyone’s head. Take a number and wait. Don’t we have enough of that in our lives as it is?

The difference between the left and the right on this is this: The left wants to create a utopia on earth whereby Gov’t is the ultimate arbiter of morality and ethics. The right (at least the bible believing part) knows that man is flawed, knows that perfection only comes after death, and believes in personal responsibility for all actions.
And since when does holding one’s self to a higher standard and failing to meet that standard become a base for perjorative? The ‘hypocrisy’ call from the left is pathetic. It is akin to not having any personal standards so that one can never be called a hypocrit. It is a stupid accusation in this sense. The more appropriate use of hypocrit applies when elucidating Al Gore’s slobbering affair with a hoax(global warming). The man flies around on private jets, lives in an enormous mansion, and banks cash on some stupid ‘carbon-offset’ company.
You want to know what a real carbon offset is? Obama’s irresponsible debt passed on to our children. The man is a menace on humanity.

The current system is not broken. We just have widely expanding health care options and they are expensive. When the perception that health care is a “right” as opposed to a commodity-service like any other, politicians fall over one another to give us those rights.
Our current system may be flawed, may not get as much care to everyone as we would like, but as Winston Churchill said: “Democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms.” Well our health care system is the same.
One thing though, Churchill also said: “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.”
I fear we will get the health care system we deserve.
Mr. Joe on June 25, 2009 at 10:54 AM
Don’t worry, I am hardly gleeful that Obama is walking away from the public option. Kennedy Dodd accomplishes it easily without the public plan and the others aren’t much better. Keeping our health care out of the governments grubby paws is uppermost in my mind I can assure you.
My point with AnninCA had more to do with her misconception that conservatives are the only ones out of step with a general agreement that we need to go the socialized medicine route. None of the polling backs up her claim.

Earlier this week he admitted that his scheme would force millions of folk to lose their doctor. Last night he admitted that the extremely sick would get a up/down check from a bureaucrat on treatment….is this scam what folk really want. Do the 85% or so really want to destroy what they have, at a high tax cost, to provide mediocre care for the minority that does not have care? I have hope that folk will say no, if the Congress even bothers to read the plan before the try to ram it through….

Stay the hell out of my life. I have reached a point my anger no longer stays on the charts. The ONLY government entity the government has not completely hosed is the military. Not because they do not try. They screwed up what used to be good healthcare for mediocre care. They took away healthcare for retirees promised when we joined. We now pay regular premiums for healthcare after retirement. For those who never served I do not expect understanding on this point. Servicemembers lives were always expendable but the promise to care of us and our family afterward was the payoff. Dental care, phhhttt. Too expensive after retiring to talk about and worthless.
I am beyond party affiliation. They are all self-serving corrupt party hacks with few exceptions. Writing to any of them results in a standard party talking points letter. In the end they compromise(fold) like cheap houses.
I do not have much faith in the future of our country. It will be up to the states to exert their rights and protect its citizens.
Oh yes, AnninCA. Tuff break.

Before we get into any sort of dialog about national health care, lets do a trial run first. Lets look and see how the Government runs the VA.
When they get that model working and little to no waste or fraud or sh*tty service, then we can start talking about doing that on a larger scale, but lets work the model first.
untill then lets not fix whats not broken.
