Obama’s letter to the mullahs

The Washington Times reports exclusively today that Barack Obama secretly sent a letter to Ali Khamenei and the Guardian Council in early May. President Obama told the Supreme Leader that he wanted better relations between the US and Iran, and that he hoped to build “cooperation and bilateral relations” with the Islamic Republic. Khamenei reacted as anyone outside this White House might have expected:
Prior to this month’s disputed presidential election in Iran, the Obama administration sent a letter to the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling for an improvement in relations, according to interviews and the leader himself.
Ayatollah Khamenei confirmed the letter toward the end of a lengthy sermon last week, in which he accused the United States of fomenting protests in his country in the aftermath of the disputed June 12 presidential election. …
“The American president was quoted as saying that he expected the people of Iran to take to the streets,” Ayatollah Khamenei misquoted Mr. Obama as saying, according to a translation by Mideastwire.com.
“On the one hand, they [the Obama administration] write a letter to us to express their respect for the Islamic Republic and for re-establishment of ties, and on the other hand they make these remarks. Which one of these remarks are we supposed to believe? Inside the country, their agents were activated. Vandalism started. Sabotaging and setting fires on the streets started. Some shops were looted. They wanted to create chaos. Public security was violated. The violators are not the public or the supporters of the candidates. They are the ill-wishers, mercenaries and agents of the Western intelligence services and the Zionists.”
On one hand, one can see why Obama was reluctant to criticize the crackdown on the streets, even after Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel — two of Iran’s key trading partners — ripped the mullahs in public. Obama believed that his letter might have had some impact on Khamenei, convincing the Guardian Council that they could work with the US. As Khamenei’s response shows, it comes from an almost-blinding naiveté and a belief that the problem in US-Iranian relations is and has been the US, and not the radical Islamist extremists running Iran.
Obama tried saying all last week that he didn’t want to give the mullahs a propaganda boost by making it look as though we favored the protesters. In effect, though, he already had given them one through his letter, and as events showed, the mullahs didn’t need a statement from Obama to make it look like the protests were a CIA plot. Khamenei and his mullahs can simply make it up; they have done it quite often during the 30 years since the revolution. “Peacefuly coexistence” isn’t on their agenda, a fact that hasn’t sunk in at the current White House yet.
There is nothing wrong in sending that letter, of course. Probably every president since Jimmy Carter has at least attempted it, and the letter by itself does no harm. It’s the belief that a letter will magically change the minds of the mullahs, and acting as though such a letter is more important than the Iranian people speaking for themselves, that is the amateurish mistake.

I just read this linked on DRUDGE
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/jun/24/us-contacted-irans-ayatollah-before-election/?feat=home_cube_position1
and my conclusion is that Obama is a sack of slime.
He’s essentially just wormed his support across the ocean for “Dinnerjacket” while PRETENDING before the world he was neutral, or that the U.S. (which Obama says he CONTROLS), if you can believe that) is.
Obama is a very big sneaky, dangerous weasel.
And there’s no way he is not a Muslim, not after this ghastly episode of sneakiness and deceit.
He’s using the U.S. to bring about the end…

Hey Ed or Allah
You may want to look into this story; Hillary Mann Leverett is an Iran expert that used to be on the National Security Council covering Iran and she used to be crtical of the Bush administration policy towards Iran. Her husband Flynt Leverett who was also in the NSC, and also critical of Bush, wrote what I think is the Obama blueprint for his now failed Iran engagement policy: The paper is called “Dealing with Tehran: Assessing U.S. Diplomatic Options Toward Iran” http://tcf.org/publications/internationalaffairs/leverett_diplomatic.pdf
The important detail is that last night on Lou Dobbs he was interviewing Hillary Mann Leverett along with Frum and she stated flatly that Obama’s Iran policy of “engagement” which they have been cheerleading for over 4 years is dead. She went on to say that the policy has collapsed due to this weeks events. She said Obama cannot proceed with this policy now and will have to try another one.
Now if these architects of the “engagement” policy are saying it…it may be something that should be followed up on by our side.
if either one of you have a chance you may want to look into it.

I think there IS something wrong with him sending that letter. Iran is a TERRORIST nation who mistreats its people. Secondly, if the dolt was hell-bent on sending the letter, he should have waited two months and sent the letter to the TRUE winner of the election.

So when they are put on trial and sentenced to death or killed on the streets Khamenei and the Mullahs in their thinking aren’t putting to death their own citizens but ‘agents of the West’ and that is how they will sell it to the people who have been ingrained with this message for the last 30 years. And the Mullah rule will continue.
Does anyone know if these ’secret letters’ are copied and sent to the Archives before they are sent to their secret destinations so that they can be FOIAed for later use- in articles, trials etc?
journeyintothewhirlwind on June 24, 2009 at 9:44 AM
I’ll be specific: Obama UNDERSTANDS how the Muslim mind functions and why. And he speaks their language in the same contexts that they do, even when he’s using English. It’s what he’s SAYING by not spitting it out that’s the thing, to them and to anyone who has mastered listening to his duplicitous, if not torturous, missives.
The Mullah undoubtedly received that letter as a performance act by Obama (and the U.S. unfortunately, since the Mullah also is of the mind that the U.S. is now under the control — at least, influence — of Islam with Barry in the White House, and he’s probably right in that regard), and what that letter IN THE MIND OF ISLAM means is that Barry’s AGAIN BOWING DOWN, he’s acting submissively, it makes them then feel more empowered.
Thus, the Mullah’s brazen complaints, Barry’s cowardly denials of being involved while actually being instruementally involved. This is a truly horrible escapade that is unfolding and Obama is, indeed, a slimy b**tard.

His first mistake was sending the message in the form of a letter because words on paper simply cannot match the soothing persuasiveness of Obama’s smokey calm voice. He should learn from this mistake and be sure to upload the wound-healing passionate words to a sparkling new ipod and ship it off to Tehran. We haven’t heard any “Death to America” chants being spouted by Queen Elizabeth have we? Coincidence? I think not.

Obama and many liberals mistakenly believe that a Utopian world is possible. They feel that all that is required to enter this new era of peace and love is a positive example. The belief that once the US lays down its arms and hostile rhetoric as a gesture of goodwill, the rest of the world will follow suit.
This position is very naive to anyone who knows any basic facts about human nature. It amazes me that this is the position that most academics and universities take. This approach has never worked in the past. It has always allowed tyrants to use deceit and manipulation in an effort to forestall hostilities against them, while they build up their own forces and wage a propaganda campaign against their opponents.
Why are academics and universities teaching our children a position that is based solely upon wishful thinking and not backed up by history. As a matter of fact, the liberal position on world peace is contradicted by history in every case.
This is one reason why I feel ambivalent about a student led resistance in Iran. I wonder if the Iranian students have been deceived about human nature as their American counterparts.

As another comment pointed out, Obama should have sent a letter after the elections. It seems he was in a hurry to shore up our relations with the Muslim world (aside from spending money we don’t have) before he had settled into his new jobs. He is making all these rookie mistakes from sheer impatience, and this was the worst time we could have POTUS learning on the job. Plus, it seems he has a very different idea of America than most of us. *cough*closet Muslim*cough*
Anyway, Hitchens was right in his recent assessment of the situation: everything in that part of the world is a Western crypto-Zionist conspiracy. You can count on the mullahs to make that argument, especially when their backs are up against the wall.
We want regime change. The Iranian people want freedom. It’s a WIN WIN situation to everyone but Teh Won.

The other thing, I just read an article (from a few days ago) in the WSJ, about Michelle Obama crowing about how Americans should be eating more ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGETABLES and then Barack chimed in and said that since Michelle’s been (having the gardeners) growing (their) her “organic garden,” that “we’ve all been eating a lot more” healthy, organic vegetables “in the White House.”
All of this nonsense without regard for the fact that the White House has a superlative, exceptional kitchen staff and chefs available 24/7, who certainly know how and where to obtain just about everything imaginable there is to eat and are doing so in the course of their jobs there.
And that “organic gardens” are not possible for many Americans except those with far more resources than the majority of people today have (time, money, help, land, weather).
Michelle Obama has to be the most spoiled, self-centered fool I have ever heard speaking anywhere at any time and that’s saying a lot. She shows up supposedly to serve food to the homeless in a shelter wearing $500. shoes and then stays there “serving” for all of twenty minutes while she has photos taken, then she leaves.
Same with her ridiculous parade about her wonderful gardening. The staff at the White House take care of it, the kitchen staff even says they have weekly weeding work. Michelle shows up for the photos, pulls a few stalks and then disdains the White House food as being beneath her accordingly.
I’m truly disgusted by these two people, the Obamas. Just disgusted by their gravely course and ill-mannered characters.

Never before has this nation elected such a total incompetent. The argument over Affirmative Action is over, and it is proven a failed policy. It is probably an irrelevant question. Nobody, certainly not an individual with the international affairs expertise of Paris Hilton, was anticipating anything but an uneventful election. After all, it is a proven fact that the more repressive the regime the easier elections run.
From the way I read the story, the letter really had nothing to do with the election and everything to do with Obama’s unrelenting desire to sit down and have a photo-op with all the nation’s enemies. It’s the naive liberal idea that he can talk them into “liking us” if we only abandon our principles and values and do whatever they want us to do or say.

I’m just relieved that that old out-of-touch codger McCain isn’t running things and that dumb breeder Palin isn’t a failing heartbeat away from the Presidency.

Seriously though, I hope I’m not the only one who’s noticed Obama has no idea what he’s doing with foreign policy and that the other choice in the election would be much much better.

No, she’s lecturing Americans on the desirability and “need” to have an organic garden. AND to eat ORGANIC “fruits and vegetables.”
It’s pitifully condescending and utterly unrealistic. A family can be exceptionally healthy consuming once-frozen veges purchased at a WalMart, for example, they don’t NEED to go spend $55,000.00 or more to create a seasonal “organic garden” that is then tended by dozens of paid staff that someone else pays, to-boot.
Michelle Obama is a righteous and flaming idiot. As ugly inside as she is out.

In that case, he should have just copied Reagan’s letter.

Ha, I know, I have a problem with that bit recurring over and over, too. Was unforgettable.
