The plot thickens: Federal agent spotted Sanford at airport on Thursday
posted at 6:45 pm on June 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
Remember, we’ve already had two different explanations for where he went. His wife claimed he’d gone off to write, although she didn’t know where, then his spokesman claimed he was out hiking the Appalachian Trail. And yet, even in some of the reports of his absence yesterday, the curious fact that his cell phone signal was last detected near Atlanta was being noted.
Now this. Eccentric disappearances are bad enough, but eccentric disappearances plus lies?
On Tuesday, sources told News 4′s Nigel Robertson that a state vehicle is missing and was tracked down, not to the Appalachian Trail, but to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.
Sources told Robertson that a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane. Robertson was told that the governor was not accompanied by security detail.
Sanford has been out of reach for more than four days, including Father’s Day.
Sawyer has emphasized that the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail and that it wasn’t something the staff or Jenny Sanford were concerned about.
But sources told WYFF News 4 that the federal agent who spotted Sanford saw him at the Atlanta airport, which is about 80 miles from the start of the trail.
Sanford’s a guy with many political enemies, even within his own party, so it’s not unthinkable that someone seized on the detail about his cell phone and spun some garbage about a mysterious flight out of it. And yet, the fact that even his wife didn’t know where he was going is decidedly odd and suspicious. What if there was a family emergency? Exit question: Theories? Is this a set up or a cover up? And does Mrs. Sanford really not know his whereabouts?

I’m waiting for facts to come out. And certainly, as governor his staff should know how to contact him, but that doesn’t mean they have to tell anyone.
Maybe he’s just camping out at an IMAX theater for the Transformers movie.

I know, I was being flip because I am not crazy about the Umpa Lumpa that is my governor. kg598301 made a good point that I heard earlier today, that this is something the Lt. Gov. has stirred up because Mrs. Sanford has endorsed the Lt. Gov. opponent for the run for governor. I don’t think Gov. Sanford has said anything but it is probably assumed that he and his wife agree.

Cindy… when the whole world is out to get you. It is best to hide in Plain sight.
upinak on June 23, 2009 at 9:43 PM
I hadn’t heard that, and it would be interesting if true. Still, all in all, he needs to come back as soon as he can and straighten all of this out.
I sincerely hope he’s had some way of getting in touch with everyone he needs to at any moment he might be needed. That, I believe, would destroy this as a scandal.
Esthier on June 23, 2009 at 9:45 PM
It’s very interesting. Is Gov. Palin going to Iraq, Afghanistan or both?
Cindy Munford on June 23, 2009 at 9:46 PM
Well that’s fine but an individual’s feelings are not the standard to which a governor is held. A person in both an executive and a command position is objectively and explicitly accountable for his/her whereabouts to his constituents and those whom he/she commands militarily. Feelings are a separate matter.
baldilocks on June 23, 2009 at 9:46 PM
You know I am thinking both as there are Nat Guard from Alaska in both locations not to mention a couple different stryker brigades.
Either way she will be welcomed and they haven’t said when she is “leaving”. She did this the last time too… except when she left last time, I think she may have been pregnant then or shortly after. Imgaine if it happened again? I bet Todd would say: Ok Hun, These trips are producing!

Though apparently not to some people who are overly emotional (not you Cindy) about this matter.
baldilocks on June 23, 2009 at 9:50 PM
I guess that’s why I have a different take on this because I don’t believe that he can’t be contacted. I may very well be giving him credit that he doesn’t deserve but it’s hard for me to imagine that those close to him wouldn’t be a bit more on edge if they truly don’t know where he is or how to contact him. They say there is no such thing as bad publicity, but it seems like the explanation on this will have to be better than average.

Cindy Munford on June 23, 2009 at 9:54 PM
But saying this doesn’t make it so. Hot Air is visited by a millions of surfers every month. Most of those visitors (I think we would all agree) are conservatives. So, even if your original intent was not to create a “party platform”, at this point in the site’s history (ie. millions of users, mentions on national news shows, trackbacks, etc.) your site is most certainly now part of the party platform.
To that end, Allahpundit owes it to the collective conservative thought process to take his responsibility seriously. If he chooses to degrade a candidate (Palin, Sanford) or make fun of a TV personality (Beck), he is being read and his opinions are being considered by millions of potential GOP voters. By comparison, you would never see this sort of off-message on DailyKos, where all front page contributors keep the same message espoused by Markos. And which site’s candidates have had the better track record lately? In case you haven’t noticed, the Democrats are on a roll.

I just point out she no nonsense lady
MirCat on June 23, 2009 at 9:56 PM
If that’s the case then some somebodies among the two groups to whom he is objectively accountable probably knew where he was and that would be fine. What I have a problem with is the idea that a publicly elected official doesn’t have to tell anyone where he/she is. That’s wrong and dangerous for the C-in-C of any military force.
baldilocks on June 23, 2009 at 9:57 PM
Seems a little overly James Bondish but what do I know. I would think they will keep the specifics of Gov. Palin’s travel agenda pretty general don’t you? I hope she gets to go both places. Wouldn’t Hawkdriver be stoked if he got to meet her?

Either way I completely agree that he’ll need a good explanation, preferably one that starts with, “Though I was away and had no security detail, I was never out of contact with my staff…”

Cindy Munford on June 23, 2009 at 10:02 PM

I think each party has a “utility governor” to be able to be thrown into the office for up to a month or two if the real gov.is gone. The Lt.Gov. is a joke job so no one would trust that person to fill in.

I admire your loyalty. I haven’t read all the comments so I don’t know what un-truths you are referring to. Plus you add to it the fact that we just don’t know what’s going on. Until I know the truth I will not defend or condemn. The latest Politico article would suggest that Gov. Sanford likes his alone time and I don’t think that is inherently bad. Let’s wait and see if Gov. Sanford needs us to fight for him.
Cindy Munford on June 23, 2009 at 10:16 PM
Let me finish my own message. You do realize what is happening here, right? It started with Palin before the 2008 election (and to some extent is continuing today): a massive, coordinated push to discredit her from the national scene. Why? Because she’s a popular yet good conservative candidate. Next, the machine turns on Sanford. Or Jindal. Or whomever. One by one your good candidates will be discredited, singled out and then slowly discredited. Until you wake up one day in early 2011 and you’re left with only (for lack of a better example) John McCain. And standing there on the stage, this tired-looking establishment politician on the Right remains, being compared to Obama and as a party, you’ll wonder, was this the best we could offer? Why didn’t we run someone more captivating, more exciting, more real?
LastRick on June 23, 2009 at 10:17 PM

katy the mean old lady on June 23, 2009 at 10:18 PM
Let me say this for the record. I’m a Libertarian; I have zero loyalty to Sanford at this point (I don’t live in his state). What I do have is loyalty to the conservative movement which is under attack. And I don’t think it does conservatives any good when AP carries water for the Democrats.
LastRick on June 23, 2009 at 10:19 PM
Agreed. I say the same of high heels, which I swear will kill me one day.
At the point when we believe they’re being smeared. Some do here and have said so. Others, do not.
But if anything, some on this site are going to be harder on potential presidential candidates simply because they support the GOP and would rather stop a candidate from running than find out we’ve nominated a lemon.

I get your point and yes the battle is twice as hard when the press is an agent for the other side. But I still can’t defend what I don’t know anything about. Why anyone would want to run for public office is beyond me. You have to want to be like Mr. Obama with all his little media puppies at his heels. It doesn’t appeal to me.

Gov. Sanford is hated more by the Republican establishment as by libs in SC. His two most vocals critics in this “tempest in a teacup” are his prospective successor, the Lt. Gov. who isn’t half the man he is, and one of the Rep. state Senators who only gets national attention by criticizing Gov. Sanford.
Lib websites are painting this down-to-earth governor as “politically dead” due to their own cynicism and slimey attempts at painting an uninformed/gossip-birthed portrait of hypocrisy on another conservative. I know him better than that. I’m quite sure that if he has erred in this, it is simply because other people think he is more important than he sees himself. He is a humble man who is not motivated to seek attention or political affection, nor will he be pushed. That’s why the establishment hates him.
If he really has demonstrated feet of clay, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt until he or his wife say so; since unlike other politicians who walk on water, Gov. Sanford has proven his integrity for several years now in the public eye.
All you guys’ sense of humor doesn’t offend me, so long as we all realize this is a non-story. Evidently “Law-and-Order” Spitzer used to sneak away from his security detail all the time and no one worried about it. Now they want to paint Sanford with the Spitzer brush? Right. They can all go watch Letterman for all I care.
rwenger43 on June 23, 2009 at 10:28 PM
I agree completely. So, in that vein, why would a blog moderator speculate about the reasons behind this (“eccentricity”, “lies”, “oddity”, “cover-up”, all of these AP wrote above) without knowing the full story? And my point is, to do that would be irresponsible to the conservative candidate in question.
LastRick on June 23, 2009 at 10:29 PM
I pointed that out earlier up the thread. Apparently Mrs. Sanford has endorsed his GOP opponent for the governorship. That had to go over like a lead balloon. I agree that he is stirring the pot big time in this little adventure.

It’s more then political payback. Mike Gallagher was relating this morning stories of this guys run ins with his own State Troopers. Supposedly he got pulled over once and when the Trooper went back to his car to check out his identification he called into the State Police headquarters as an “anonymous” tip to let them know that they had the lt. gov pulled over and they better let him go. They were able to identify his phone number. The guy is a wack job. sanford has gotten away for awhile like this before with no problems but this guy did the typical democrat thing, he created with the media a scandal where there was none. And now our own little “conservative” blogger is helping to keep the nonscandal going.

The South Carolina constitution is perfectly clear that in the “temporary absence of the governor” the Lt. Governor acts in his behalf.
In fact… I suspect that’s the only thing S.C. pays the Lt. Governor to do.

Why is this an “obvious lie”? A guy can’t meet up with friends to fly to a particular hiking location? Or take care of business in Atlanta and fly to a hiking location? The Appalachian Trail isn’t confined to South Carolina and being governor doesn’t preclude him from vacationing in places that lack cell phone service.
But his opponents are loving the opportunity for rumor and innuendo.

Mark Sanford & his Lt. Governor Bauer do not like each other, they have been at odds for years~
It’s just personal petty bullsh*t backstabbing. Bauer is the one who called Politico to tell them he couldn’t reach the governor. Any more questions? lol
kg598301 on June 23, 2009 at 11:30 PM
Because as everyone knows, when you are desperately seeking the governor but can’t find him to tell him “YOU SUCK!” the logical people to call are the search & rescue team at Politico. They can be deployed at a moment’s notice, right?
ha ha
kg598301 on June 23, 2009 at 11:54 PM
I think it’s probably much ado about nothing, at least I hope that’s the case. But the Appalachian Trail doesn’t go through SC at all, as far as I know. The southern end starts at Springer Mtn. in northern Georgia, then follows pretty much the TN-NC border and then further NE of course.
ddrintn on June 24, 2009 at 12:00 AM
Since everybody else seems to be speculating, and now the “strange new turn!” this story has taken is his SUV apparently at the Columbia airport, I’ll join in the fun again.
Dude wants some time away, drives his SUV to a nearby airport (Columbia Metropolitan). Gets on a plane to Atlanta (yes there are flights to there) where he is apparently seen by an anonymous “federal agent”. Also has cellphone on in Atlanta area, pinged. Gets shuttle service to Appalachian Trail. Wife probably has an idea of where he is, covers for him (“dunno where he is, I’m not concerned” hint hint). Checks in later from AT area (Not that many cell towers in the woods, folks) and staff says “you’ll never guess what hornets nest Barney Fife and the Lt. Gov. kicked over while you were gone.”
Gov. Sanford- (sigh) “OK, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Oh, and I’ll repeat what I said on another of these threads:
His staff apparently knew he was on the AT, probably had a general idea of his location. Probably couldn’t reach him immediately by cell, but if there was a truly urgent matter they could have located him with the assistance of forest rangers, state police etc. a heck of a lot faster than another gov. on vacation in, say, Bermuda, could get a flight home.
Lay. Off.
Please?
cs89 on June 24, 2009 at 12:05 AM
You’re probably right, cs89. I read somewhere that he’s a marathon runner. It’s a little strange that he left his shoes and shorts in the car. And I’m wondering who this “federal agent” and “law enforcement” person were up to. The “federal agent” seemed to imply that someone was with him. If they were really concerned I’d think they could find out what plane he was on.
But him being gone doesn’t necessarily seem to be him lying. Especially since he hasn’t said much about the whole thing anyway. It’s probably much ado about nothing, unless there’s foul play against him. Tomorrow will tell.

And the M-S-M said “We got him with the goods!”

Pretty obvious attempt by the Democrats to break the Republicans’ near monopoly on elected state offices in South Carolina.
Take out Sanford now, then use the rumors about Lt Gov Andre Bauer to kick him to the curb later, then try to run the table in 2010.
Subtle, this ain’t.

I’m missing why Gov Sanford missing is a news story. He has no right to privacy – is that it? He is a prisoner in the Governor’s Mansion and he broke out of jail – is that it? South Carolina will fall down a big hole in the ground if they don’t know where the Governor is – is that it?
I’m sorry, but the real story here is the hysteria and mass nervous breakdown taking place among “the media” because they lost sight of a politician for a few days.

Rational thought vs the state run media. Hmmmm.
Oh I see. There are 50 Governors and 50 Lieutenant Governors. Of course there must be something going on when our liberal bird dog detail loses track of one of the leading conservative govs.
Why isn’t the ‘media’ running a tracking system on all the other govs?

Has anybody seen Rielle Hunter lately?

Excellent point. It’s South Carolina for Gods sake. Nothing has happened there since Ft. Sumter.
If something happens to South Carolina, we always have another Carolina that can go it alone if need be.
