The plot thickens: Federal agent spotted Sanford at airport on Thursday
posted at 6:45 pm on June 23, 2009 by Allahpundit
Remember, we’ve already had two different explanations for where he went. His wife claimed he’d gone off to write, although she didn’t know where, then his spokesman claimed he was out hiking the Appalachian Trail. And yet, even in some of the reports of his absence yesterday, the curious fact that his cell phone signal was last detected near Atlanta was being noted.
Now this. Eccentric disappearances are bad enough, but eccentric disappearances plus lies?
On Tuesday, sources told News 4′s Nigel Robertson that a state vehicle is missing and was tracked down, not to the Appalachian Trail, but to the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta.
Sources told Robertson that a federal agent spotted Sanford in the airport boarding a plane. Robertson was told that the governor was not accompanied by security detail.
Sanford has been out of reach for more than four days, including Father’s Day.
Sawyer has emphasized that the governor was hiking on the Appalachian Trail and that it wasn’t something the staff or Jenny Sanford were concerned about.
But sources told WYFF News 4 that the federal agent who spotted Sanford saw him at the Atlanta airport, which is about 80 miles from the start of the trail.
Sanford’s a guy with many political enemies, even within his own party, so it’s not unthinkable that someone seized on the detail about his cell phone and spun some garbage about a mysterious flight out of it. And yet, the fact that even his wife didn’t know where he was going is decidedly odd and suspicious. What if there was a family emergency? Exit question: Theories? Is this a set up or a cover up? And does Mrs. Sanford really not know his whereabouts?

Jeez they’re digging closer and deeper into this then they are into Obama’s actual governing philosophies and actions.
It’s an issue but seriously what the heck?

Let’s talk about Gov. Kaine who has been working for the DNC during the day and not doing his governorship. Wait, he’s a democrat. Never mind!

If his wife didn’t know (or lied and said she didn’t know) where he is, it’s probably a cover-up. Of what, I couldn’t say, but it must be important enough that it requires lying to the public.

When people don’t want the truth known, telling a lie isn’t always effective. Telling a bunch of lies is better, since there’s more work involved in eliminating all of them.
The real answer is probably completely different. I would assume he had a nervous breakdown or something, and was treated anonymously in a hospital or other medical facility.

Bawney Fwank lured him into his den, enticing him with the possibility that he could use some stimuwus money to pay of SC debts. When Sanford arrived, he found Fwank naked on the bed with a leather whip. Sanford immediately left, shaken, unnerved and as he ran screaming he was lost on the Appalachian Trail for 3 days before he got his cell signal back…..

He’s off secretly solving the Iranian crisis. And when the whole truth comes out, he’ll be a shoo-in for Pres in 2012.
notropis on June 23, 2009 at 6:56 PM
I don’t have an issue with a person taking a little time off, disappearing for a bit. I would sure want to let my wife or other family know. And Sandford has been under some pressure, what with the stimulii money and such.
However, this is a public official. One can’t just take a drive without telling anyone. Sure, take a few days, go to the lake cabin, whatever, but at least your own office needs to know. Just in case there is some sort of issue that needs the Govornor’s attention.
Either way, he can probably kiss the ’12 campaign off right now. Maybe it shouldn’t be that way, but that’s how it will play out.
JamesLee on June 23, 2009 at 6:57 PM
It’s nobody’s business but the constituents of his state where he was. Even THEY don’t need to know his location every waking moment. The voyeuristic fascination with politicians and celebrity probably gets kind of irritating. His wife owes no explanation where her husband was. Leave the man alone.
portlandon on June 23, 2009 at 6:58 PM

He’s the freaking governor. He can’t just disappear for a few days whenever he wants. He can expect privacy when it comes to not having his toilet bowl bugged by the media, but this is completely reasonable.
Darth Executor on June 23, 2009 at 6:58 PM
Its also something the press conveniently remembers when they’re protecting one of their own… and conveniently forgets when they’re after on of their enemies.
The NYT is a prime example. Covering up for a kidnapped reporter while being all too happy to broadcast a list of nuclear sites.

upinak on June 23, 2009 at 6:59 PM
I don’t why Sanford would needlessly create this controversy over nothing, if it is indeed nothing. If he wanted to take off that is fine, just make sure everyone has their stories straight including your staff and your family. And don’t be seen somewhere other than where you were claiming to be going. Not that hard. Its a bummer because otherwise he seems like a good guy and a solid conservative, something we need.
echosyst on June 23, 2009 at 7:00 PM
What difference does it make if he was on a plane or hiking?
I don’t get this obsession with politicians…if something is “wrong” then the news will find it, meanwhile, back at the ranch…
I think every Republican politician should do something like this, just to keep it interesting and watch all the rumors.
Meanwhile…we have Murtha, up to his eyeballs and nobody spending a tenth of the time…we have ACORN, we have a Secretary of the State who knows nothing that is going on…we have Pelosi in hiding after taking pot shots at the CIA, and nobody tracking her down, we have a president inviting Iran over for a 4th of July picnic…we have N. Korea launching a missile towards Hawaii…and some guy hiking or not hiking in the mountains.
You tell me what is more important…

He’s a public figure and I’ll make him my business if I feel like it. Especially if he’s being pushed as a potential presidential candidate. And they may not need to know where he is every waking moment but they need to know why he disappears for a few days.
If I was wathing him bang his wife through his bedroom window with a pair of binoculars I’d understand. If you don’t care about elected officials taking off in a shroud of secrecy, then go read something else.

As good of an explanation of it as I can think of, lord knows being teh primary political enemy of the Obama administration and one of the only conservative politicians left can make a guy stressed out. He went for a hike on his own and likely he told his people to leave him be. From there someone with a bone to pick makes up BS about him being an airport to suggest that OMG THE CONSERVATIVE HAS A SECRET MISTRESS OR SOMETHING LIKE SUPER HYPOCRTICIAL!!!!111!!!
Seriously, this is a major issue to teh american media but not what Obama is doing in Iran, or with health care, or the with cap and tax or with anything else.

It’s a non-story filled with smears against the man (“He abandoned his family!” “He’s a hippy, he went off to hike naked!”, etc) when no one but Stanford and his people know what is up.
When a dead girl, or a live mistress or boy comes into the picture, then I’ll gladly erase him off my Christmas card list.
Until then, it’s a non-story and I repeat: Who Cares.
Enoxo on June 23, 2009 at 7:04 PM
Well if he was hiking his wife wouldn’t know EXACTLY where he was… so that let’s her say she doesn’t know. The car at the airport could have been his or any one’s… maybe he took a short flight to a trail head and hiked from there…
Possibly we should start installing GPS chips on all elected officials like pets.
petunia on June 23, 2009 at 7:04 PM
They’re not the only two options. If he’s giving two contradictory reasons then he’s lying. If the real reason is something like a mental breakdown then it’s important to know that your governor can’t handle the pressure and it’s especially important to know about it in a potential presidential candidate.
What “obsession”? Asking a question is “obsession” now?
Nice list of red herrings. We don’t need to ignore all that to discuss this topic as well. And the image of the GOP is rather important at the moment. Just because support for Ogabe is slipping doesn’t mean the GOP is seen as a good alternative. If he disappeared for a few days to bang gay hookers, snort coke or have a mental breakdown then your attempt to sweep it under the rug will make it reflect even worse on the entire party.

Wow, all this attention on a little ol’ governor? No wonder Duh One is on TV all day everyday. The media would surely pump the story if Duh One was missing for a day, right?
My theory is that Gov. Sanford is an adult, and can go as he pleases. There are no hurricanes looming off the coast. The legislative session in SC is over. Political hacks in both parties hate this man. Of course his wife knew where he was, just as his staff did.

If it was a (D) we might just be paying attention.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything you’ve said that I’ve disagreed with but…I don’t know if you’ve ever been married, but if my husband disappears for several days and I don’t know where he is it’s not “privacy” or a “man going out to do stuff by himself”. I’m really glad that you feel that your men should be out running around without letting you know for days or weeks? months? years? on end without letting you know but most people don’t live their lives that way. It’s not conducive to a happy marriage. It’s grounds for a divorce & I assume he’s running around with another woman…gee that’s just what my first mistake was doing.
Someone else already point this one out in the other thread about this, but he’s also got a state to run. Can’t just run out on that job. If he wants privacy he needs to step down from a job that keeps him accountable to the ppl of his state.

He wants time away, wants to go hiking or something
Tells his wife wh ere he’s going, tells her to not tell anyone so he can truly get away.
Any chance?
Defector01 on June 23, 2009 at 7:10 PM
Too bad he isn’t a Senator running for President.
Then he could be gone from his job for months on end and nobody would say “boo”.
Maybe Sanford snuck off to meet with Rev.Wright or Hillary Clinton.
MayBee on June 23, 2009 at 7:10 PM
Because Sanford was painted as a potential nominee in 2012 against their Messiah, like Gov. Palin. So they’re trying to destroy even the faintest hint of trouble early in advance on the stupidest of stories so they can repeatedly ask quirky questions with curiously-raised eyebrows and faint melodramatic music every night until someone’s life is shattered.

Seems to be the inference the Dems want to suggest. They understand he’s a potential Pres. candidate in ’12. I wouldn’t be surprised if several of the most likely Rep. candidates aren’t watched by the opposition. Sanford could do real damage to Obama, so Obama intends to do it first.

You’re right. And I’m not saying that there isn’t something “strange” being left out on purpose. Because it is. But I just wanted to address the idea that a Governor can never be out of the office. I mean what if the sky falls. After all, he’s a public servant…no public servant works!

But, as a GOVERNOR, you do not just leave…elected officials go on vacations all the time, but, we know about it and that is a good thing. I’m pretty mad about this silliness on his part, however, because if it is much ado about nothing, it sure is a poor time to do it. We kind of need all hands on deck at the moment.
