Quote of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on June 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

“But we’re not cynics here. Instead, we are devotees trying to track our way through Sullivan’s mental progression, disciples whose only hope lies in understanding how so great a man could so completely whipsaw from a critical view of a man he’d once supported to a sycophantic lay worshiper of another, equally obvious politician.

Some attribute this to President Obama’s pretty face. That’s demeaning. Some attribute it to George W. Bush’s stance on gay marriage – but that would be ridiculous, not merely because it would suggest that Sullivan is a one-dimensional writer obsessed with sex, but also because it would make Sullivan seem like an utter nutter for hating former Vice President Dick Cheney (a proponent of gay marriage and federalism) with the intensity of a thousand suns. (It would also raise questions about the man’s sanity in another way: Candidate Obama was clear that he opposed gay marriage, and occasionally likes to have a good laugh about angry, protesting gays. Yet Sullivan’s admiration continues.)

No. These are too prosaic, too common, too easy to destroy. What could drive a man from admiration and defense for a governor from Texas who hewed to Sullivan’s then-preferred doctrine of subsidiarity to calling him a war criminal? What could so completely rearrange a man’s entire view of the world – other, of course, than some terrible disease afflicting his mind?

The answer is obvious: The Jews.”

The answer is obvious: The Jews.

That actually makes complete sense. Considering Andy’s recent statements about neocons and jews, it neatly explains his 180 on Bush and unconditional love of The One. This a**hole is an anti-semite.

Andrew Sullivan is a truly remarkable man. He can simultaneously believe as many as 6 contradictory things before breakfast. In all of recorded history I believe the closest runnerup could never simultaneously believe more than 4 contradictory things and it took him all day. Even Barack Obama himself, probably Andrew Sullivan’s closest living competitor, seems to be limited to simultaneously believing only 3 contradictory things and that usually takes him a week or more to work up to.

Cheshire Cat on June 23, 2009 at 10:52 PM

I think you bloggers pump each other up or something – I agree with Bishop that the climate change tax about to be passed or even Drudge’s latest on the collapse of the big 3 TV news show’s ratings are more interesting. Sullivan or Nixon?

The tapes also include a phone call from February 1973 between Nixon and the evangelist Billy Graham, during which Mr. Graham complained that Jewish-American leaders were opposing efforts to promote evangelical Christianity, like Campus Crusade. The two men agreed that the Jewish leaders risked setting off anti-Semitic sentiment.

“What I really think is deep down in this country, there is a lot of anti-Semitism, and all this is going to do is stir it up,” Nixon said.

At another point he said: “It may be they have a death wish. You know that’s been the problem with our Jewish friends for centuries.”

Okay that was easy, Nixon. If it was Sullivan he would have called Graham a Christianist and Graham would have responded that the Pope was right, Sully is objectively disordered (in rational thought, not sexuality).

The best part of that article is the knowledge that Andrew Sullivan will read it at least 3 or 4 times and then anguish for at least a week that he’s really not worthy and the best part of that week of anguish is, he has every reason to torment.

Perhaps the single, common life goal of every intellectual, pseudo-intellectual, and intellectual aspirant, is to be a true Renaissance man — a genius whose force of will and flexible, dominating intellect allows him to master or nearly master not one or two, but a whole host of related and unrelated fields of study and practice.

More impressive than his [Sullivan's] output is his utter lack of fear of self-contradiction, flights of laughter-inducing hyperbole, public obsessiveness, repeated self-contradiction, betrayals of utter ignorance, and failed attempts to mimic the Bard by coining bizarre neologisms to match his wandering moods.

Few among us have the raw intellectual firepower to go where he has. Fortunately, the internet tubes allow us to track his movements over time – an otherwise dizzying effort made more vertiginous by Sullivan’s kaleidoscopic mind. As with all things Sullivan, the best place to start is with human genitalia.

Andrew Sullivan used to be a fine writer who managed to balance his emotional instincts with reason and clarity. Now his published meanderings are emotionally volatile and mostly irrational.

As one of the founding conservative blogfathers, Andrew was also unusually accessible to his readers via email. I probably still have the messages he sent me during Bush’s first term. Tragically, he has become the wacky recluse who repeatedly crashes the parties of former friends, who can’t decide whether to ignore him or get a restraining order.

I feel too sorry for him now to join the public flogging. I prefer to ignore him, except in my prayers.

I was in DC when he arrived on the SCENE. Everybody new his business…was an embarrassement to the gay community then but liberals didn’t go after him and his vile behavior cause he was gay and conservatives didn’t talk about it because he was posing as a conservative.

However Mr “Milky Glutes” as he calls himself in his ads is the worst example of what is wrong with the promiscuous gay lifestyle. Utter embarrassment and frankly i would not be surprised if the early stages of dimentia have set in with him.

BillaryMcBush on June 24, 2009 at 1:36 AM

I used to make a point to watch Sullivan when he showed up to argue on CSPAN or news forums. Then again, I used to watch CSPAN and news forums.

Sullivan could debate brilliantly

However about the time the gay marriage push hardened the heart of the conservative pharoahs who refused to give it their blessing, Sullivan did a 180 faster than you can say “Pope Benedict does not support the romantic image of the gay priest much less gay marriage either”

IMHO, Sullivan’s brave new world, for which he left his motherland, turned out to be a gay bashing bust. His church of Peter of Toole and Lawrence of Arabia, or was it Becket, has gone back to celibacy and gay suppression and the romance is gone, the bloom is off the rose and it shows, in his prose

With Andrew Sullivan, it’s always been about where he gets to put Lil’ Andrew. That trumps everything.

The reason he holds George W. Bush in contempt while quaffing deeply from the Obama Kool-aid fountain is because he knows, as we all do, that George W. Bush meant every word he said about gay marriage and that Obama is lying out of political convenience.

He should just wear a sign that says: “I’ve become unhinged.”

Terrye on June 24, 2009 at 6:54 AM

The answer is obvious: The Jews.”

Sullivan is British intelligentsia. It comes naturally. The gay thing initially complicated his trad. jew thoughts, because minority victims unite, but once the jews were thrown out of the minority victims club, Andrew came out of the closet. He must have had a walk-in closet.

JiangxiDad on June 24, 2009 at 7:06 AM

merely because it would suggest identify that Sullivan is a one-dimensional writer obsessed with sex, but also because it would make Sullivan seem like an utter nutter for hating former Vice President Dick Cheney (a proponent of gay marriage and federalism)

You should have just stopped there. Both parts of that sentence (with the one correction)are correct. The majority of gays (at least those in the public eye I should say, and all of those who are activist) are so obsessed with thier genital use identification politics that they get twisted in circles trying to relate everything to thier behavior. Of course that would drive someone crazy. For them, it is a life and death struggle, they must be accepted for what they are in anyway possible by society because that is the only way they can live with themselves. There are many gays who accept that being gay is what they are but do not need to prove to themselves or anyone else that it is in anyway normal or natural. They live productive, happy lives and are accepted , nearly seemlessly, into society. Those are the people who are hurt most by those who would flaunt and advertise thier behavior. It becomes an issue because of the activists. Thier private lives, which assumedly most would like to live with dignity and discretion, becomes a scarlet letter. A scarlet letter placed on them not by society but by the gay activists.

Does he have AIDS? I’m sorry…I missed that. That’s pretty awful.

He looks like a bald Tom Arnold.

Um. Wow.

I never thought I’d see snark that could legitimately be called beautiful … but that was pretty wondrous to read.

The purest, snarkiest dismantling in history? Probably.

Again: wow.

If I were Sullivan, I’d curl up into the fetal position and cry softly for a couple weeks.

Quite possibly the best takedown ever written. Well worth reading for many reasons.

A dissection of this clown that is so thorough, biting, scathing and accurate as to render him into a buffoon crouton.

I pray that I am never the subject of such.

I concluded that Sullivan was/is mentally ill a while ago (and thus, continues to be since there’s been nothing to alter his course in the interim). It’s not a conclusion I need to rethink, unfortunately.

About “the Jews” thing, what it is, I’ve (also) concluded is that people still, on a primal level, believe in the Boogey Man, the monster under the bed, the gross thing under the stairs, THE CATCHER IN THE RYE…and it’s a form of mental illness that some then transfer those primal fears onto “the Jews” because they’re encouraged to do so by others so affected.

It’s scapegoating, pure and simple, but, it has monstrous proportions in and of itself, which is WHY those so affected with this kind of thinking are unable to view their own irrationality and are, indeed, then, mentally ill.

I think it is the AIDS. I think Sullivan has lost his mind. Literally. Sad but true.

Terrye on June 24, 2009 at 6:54 AM

I agree. In Sullivan’s case, that’s almost certainly the contributing factor if not the cause of his mental anguish and aberrated reasoning, but it doesn’t then explain the other people without AIDs who arrive at Sullivan’s same conclusions. As to the same state of mind that affects others who don’t have AIDs as Sullivan does yet still arrive at his same conclusions, I think it really is a class of illness, a class of mental illness, like a severe phobia or some milder form of schizophrenia.
