Quote of the day

“But we’re not cynics here. Instead, we are devotees trying to track our way through Sullivan’s mental progression, disciples whose only hope lies in understanding how so great a man could so completely whipsaw from a critical view of a man he’d once supported to a sycophantic lay worshiper of another, equally obvious politician.

Some attribute this to President Obama’s pretty face. That’s demeaning. Some attribute it to George W. Bush’s stance on gay marriage – but that would be ridiculous, not merely because it would suggest that Sullivan is a one-dimensional writer obsessed with sex, but also because it would make Sullivan seem like an utter nutter for hating former Vice President Dick Cheney (a proponent of gay marriage and federalism) with the intensity of a thousand suns. (It would also raise questions about the man’s sanity in another way: Candidate Obama was clear that he opposed gay marriage, and occasionally likes to have a good laugh about angry, protesting gays. Yet Sullivan’s admiration continues.)

No. These are too prosaic, too common, too easy to destroy. What could drive a man from admiration and defense for a governor from Texas who hewed to Sullivan’s then-preferred doctrine of subsidiarity to calling him a war criminal? What could so completely rearrange a man’s entire view of the world – other, of course, than some terrible disease afflicting his mind?

The answer is obvious: The Jews.”

I suspect Sullivan’s hatred of “neocons” is not consciously motivated by anti Semitism but it is just as irrational. It is the same as his “Christianist” shitck.

Mr. Joe on June 24, 2009 at 8:02 AM

The Right makes this guy by paying so much attention to him. Why they do I’ll never know. Maybe because he is so mentally ill and it is therefore so easy to make him look what he is, crazy.

TheBigOldDog on June 24, 2009 at 2:52 AM

I recall the phenomenon of the Sullivan-Trend years ago, how it was that many among the Right (while Sullivan was still somewhat reasonable) were lauding him — I read many times how it was that people contributed mightily to his website, to him, particularly other men after they read his announcement that he had AIDs.

And I was puzzled because I didn’t share in the enthusiasm about who he was, what he opined and how. He observes proper grammar but that was about it — his self-involved view claiming it to be a world view was bordering, then, on the offensive to me and he certainly appeared to be obsessive-compulsive. I was never a fan of his website, even when he claimed to be one on the Right (I never thought he was by what I read he wrote, however).

Anyway, he soon started travelling the world while claiming to be needy and then have AIDs. Then he started complaining about Bush and Cheney and against the U.S. involvement in the Middle East and…

I dunno, I just never saw the appeal there by Sullivan to some on the Right.

Lourdes on June 24, 2009 at 8:08 AM

Of course this missed the mark by trying to be politically correct. It is an easy mistake to make in today’s culture but when trying to actually do a piece on why Sullivan’s thinking is so chaotic starting out by dismissing the possibility of a mental illness makes the rest of the article a somewhat mean attack on the poor soul. And this is so obviously an attempt to not appear to tie being gay to being mentally ill. It can not a mere coincidence that many of the most volatile and perpetually confused people in modern political discourse are also gay, i.e., Sullivan, Perez Hilton, etc.

Bottom line is that Sullivan is crazy. He is not crazy though because he is gay. But that is not the same as saying is not gay because he is crazy. This also does not mean all gays are crazy, or that all crazy people are gay. But in many cases, and more often in political entities, there is a connection.

I stopped reading the Daily Dish around 2005 after being a faithful reader for years. What has our confused little Andrew done now?

RobCon on June 24, 2009 at 8:14 AM

this from the person (Sullivan); who advertised some years ago for a “partner” to “ride” him “bareback”!

Sorry, not interested; his rectum decides his “politics”; what a hypocritical Buffoon!

Dale in Atlanta on June 24, 2009 at 8:24 AM

…actually, if I was being a real wag, I’d amend that to say…”…his rectum dicktates his “politics”……

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

Dale in Atlanta on June 24, 2009 at 8:26 AM

@MikeA: so medical science goes, the grizzlier aspects of it…that upon dissection, the brains of gay males are discovered to be different than the brains of heteroseuxal males.

THE DISTINCTION THERE IS that the it is suggested that their behavior has modified their brains over time.

That, at some point, the differences didn’t exist, but over time, throughout the behaviors of male homosexuality, their brains actually are changed/modified by the physical affects.

Their brains are smaller than heterosexual males, specifically, with other changes noted that they’re generally the size of female brains though in the bodies of adult males of a larger size…

It’s grim and gruesome, but brains aren’t dissected while people are still alive, so, thus, they’re only examined in such details after death (d’oh), so there’s a limitation there as to being able to map the changes as they occur and since many gay males aren’t early-in-life getting frequent, ongoing MRIs and CATscans to capture the appearance of their brains over the lifetimes later, the questions remain: are they mishapen at origin or over time.

I THINK the general opinion is that they are mishapen over time (adversely affected) by their behaviors, after first starting out as normal in size with other males.

Lourdes on June 24, 2009 at 8:44 AM

But I think Sullivan’s problems are (also) likely as not affected by the fact that he has AIDs. Whatever is wrong with Perez Hilton is anyone’s guess but he certainly has substantial things wrong with him, based upon his behavior.

Lourdes on June 24, 2009 at 8:46 AM

Question: Who the hell is this assclown Sullivan and why exactly should I give a damn about anything he happens to blather?

So, just what is it about Hot Air that you people don’t think you need to give attribution when quoting someone? And in the particular case above, just where does the quote end, as you didn’t bother to close the quote anywhere that I can find.

Are you professionals or just hacks? Give attribution or stop posting these quote threads!

Who is Sullivan?

moonsbreath on June 24, 2009 at 9:34 AM

I used to make a point to watch Sullivan when he showed up to argue on CSPAN or news forums. Then again, I used to watch CSPAN and news forums.

Sullivan could debate brilliantly

However about the time the gay marriage push hardened the heart of the conservative pharoahs who refused to give it their blessing, Sullivan did a 180 faster than you can say “Pope Benedict does not support the romantic image of the gay priest much less gay marriage either”

IMHO, Sullivan’s brave new world, for which he left his motherland, turned out to be a gay bashing bust. His church of Peter of Toole and Lawrence of Arabia, or was it Becket, has gone back to celibacy and gay suppression and the romance is gone, the bloom is off the rose and it shows, in his prose

entagor on June 24, 2009 at 2:46 AM

Gay marriage was Sullivans last best hope to become a US citizen. With his HIV status preventing him from becoming a citizen on his own, by promoting gay marriage and all the legal rights associated with marriage, the impediment to his citizenship would have been removed.

After trying for years to get himself an exemption to the restrictions on citizenship for those with HIV infection, which he thought he would get by supporting bush, once it became clear that Gay Marriage wasn’t in the immediate future cards he got angry.

And You won’t like Milky Glutes when he gets angry…Just ask Trig.

Poor Andy, his politics and his bitterness is driven by his loose a$$hole. If he would have just used common sense and protection, he would have his citizenship already and still be posing as a conservative.

Instead he is trapped in his bitter life of foreign worker who posts ads on anonymous sex websites for more unprotected sex. “Milky GLutes” as his handle has been for years milked the system and came up with nothing.

Sadley his new hero doesn’t support gay marriage either but like Arriana Huffington, hell hath no fury like a fat overmake-up’d big haired divorced lonely woman with a bad accent and a penchant for talking out of the wrong end of her life support system.

What could so completely rearrange a man’s entire view of the world

Well for some, money will do the trick. Look at Scott Ritter and the whole oil for food fiasco.

Answer – CULT, he needs deprogrammed. Obama Obama Obama really nobody has figured out this is a Cult you used words like devotee and disciples…what word was missing – CULT.

Do you know who figured out this is a Zombie movement? MT Pundit.

Dr Evil on June 24, 2009 at 11:06 AM

How is Sullivan different from any commentator on the left? From DKos to TalkLeft, the level of ignorance and self-righteousness is the same; the only difference is that on those blogs the writing is often incoherent.

Gaunilon on June 24, 2009 at 11:31 AM

If Hillary had won, I think Sullivan would have been neutral. It really is Obama’s “hotness” that Andy is drawn to.

Speedwagon82 on June 24, 2009 at 12:13 PM

I predict Sullivan will soon have the same intellectual reputation as Perez Hilton, if not worse.

PastorJon on June 24, 2009 at 1:08 PM

I’ve been a homo for a long time now… I look at Andrew Sullivan and I see the face of all the pretentious, hateful queens that permeate major urban areas throughout our country.

The shaved head (because she’s losing her hair); the stylish “I’m so cool and smart” eyeglasses; the mandatory facial hair (“since my whole being revolves around my genitals, then I should treat my face as an extension of my pubic region”).

I’ve met a millions fags like this clown — they’re annoying, self-absorbed, and they’re cowards. I loathe them. (And I wonder why I’m single… LOL)

My vote is for “some terrible disease afflicting his mind”. The dude is over-the-top, bat-$hit crazy.

holygoat, Akzed,

Hey morons, I went to the link, but I didn’t see what was being quoted, and I didn’t take the time to dig for it because I shouldn’t have to. A link is not proper attribution, it is pure laziness, and amateurish, and HotAir can do better, and it should.

The only laziness on display here is you not reading the article. Your outrage is rooted in your own laziness. The practice of link-attribution is long accepted on the internet. In short, everyone does it. Everywhere. It’s how you back your shit up. With linkage. If you’re to lazy to read what is being linked to — or lazier still to use your browsers “search” function to highlight a particular phrase on the page — don’t get all holier-than-thou pissy with the guy who backed his shit up by providing you with the link, just admit your laziness and move on silently.
