Obama press conference: live blog

Barack Obama appears to have given up on prime-time press conferences, instead opting today to hold a mid-day presser at 12:30 ET.  Originally, they had it scheduled for the Rose Garden, but instead had to move it inside because of rain.  We’ll see if Obama can make the sun shine today.

Conclusion: I’ve been highly critical about Obama’s lack of response on Iran; I think he did very well today.  He condemned Iran in unequivocal and harsh terms.  Charles Krauthammer says he finally “adopted McCain language,” and points out that Obama always claims consistency whenever he changes direction.  Obama should have rescinded our offer of “weenie diplomacy,” which belies the tough talk.  At least, though, Obama has caught up with most of the rest of the free world.

13:22 – Has Obama seen the Neda video?  Yes, and it’s “heartbreaking”.  Has to tell Helen Thomas to pipe down; there’s a keeper moment.

13:19 – African American unemployment to 20%, but targeted intervention may come next year, according to WaPo?  Why not now?  Better to focus on getting the entire economy moving.  Good answer, but one we’d expect from a Republican.

13:17 – Hey, it’s OK to feel crappy about life now!  Thanks, Mr. President.

13:13 – Do we need a second stimulus package?  “Not yet … we need to see how effective the first stimulus will be.”  Obama also says that no one predicted how bad the economy would tank, but in fact, many people did — and said that big-government programs wouldn’t help in any case.

13:07 – Will the new law prevent Obama smoking?  “It’s not about me,” it’s about everyone else but me.  “Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No.  … I’m 95% cured.”  Um, okay.  Compares it to alcoholism.  That may not work well.

13:02 – Tapper notes Obama’s “Spock-like” answer on the public plan, and challenges him on employer retreat on private plans.  Instead of answering, Obama first asks Tapper if he’s making fun of his ears with the Spock reference.  Obama says that a public plan that “feeds at the public trough” would do that, but that a public plan can deliver better administrative performance.  Er, then please explain Medicare, Medicaid, and the VA.

13:00 – “You have avoided twice” noting potential consequences for the Iranian mullahs, Chuck Todd says, but Obama says he’s not married to the “24-hour news cycle”.

12:57 – Response on Iran “timid and weak,” today sounds a lot stronger; is this a response to McCain and Graham accusation?  Obama laughs it off.  “Only I’m the President of the United States,” which is why my earlier response was weaker, even though I said it wasn’t earlier.  I don’t want to be a “foil” for the mullahs, even though they’re doing it anyway.  Incoherence.

12:55 – Why would it drive private insurers out of business?  Because government will undercut on price.  Obama’s being deliberately obtuse.

12:54 – A public plan will “discipline” private insurers.  “Discipline”?

12:53 – Medicare Advantage going out the door in favor of plain-vanilla Medicare.  Of course.  Because a public-private partnership can’t survive ObamaCare.

12:50 – Obama notes that “75%, 80% of Americans satisfied with the plans they have.”  So why change everything?  Because we can’t pay for Medicare and Medicaid.  Ergo, let’s overturn a system that at least three-quarters of the people like.  “If we start from the premise that the status quo is unacceptable, then we have to make serious changes.”  Yes, but 80% of us don’t think the status quo is unacceptable!

12:49 – Garrett asks whether Iranian diplomats are still welcome to State Dept 4th of July celebrations.  Obama says, “That’s a choice the Iranians have to make.”  Weenie diplomacy still on!

12:47 – Major Garrett: “What took you so long?” Obama objects to the characterization that he waffled.  “We’ve been entirely consistent.”  Ha!

12:43 – Ben Bernanke has done a “fine job”, and that all financial regulators failed in the crisis.  That’s why he’s promoting the biggest expansion of regulatory power in “75 years.”  The Fed did better than most, which is why Obama wants to put more power there than elsewhere.

12:40 – Takes a Q from Nico Pitney, who has a Q from Iran — under what conditions would you accept A’Jad’s election, and if you do, isn’t that a betrayal?  Says there are ’significant questions’ about the election’s legitimacy, says it’s up to the Iranian people to choose their leaders.  But that evades the entire problem — the Iranian people say they didn’t choose their leader.

12:39 – “Should there be consequences”?  Another non-answer.

12:37 – AP wonders whether the violence has shut off the possibility of talks.  “We’re still waiting to see how this plays out.”  Meandering answer, says “it’s up to them,” which means that Obama still wants to talk with them.  Again calls Iranian uprising an “extraordinary debate,” which makes it sound like college forensics.

12:35 – Two minutes on energy, and then health-care reform.  Promises that it will not add to the deficit, despite the CBO analysis.  “We cannot have a system where we throw good money after bad practices.”  Like the VA and Medicare?

12:34 – Government subsidies will make clean energy profitable?  That’s an oxymoron.

12:33 – Three minutes on Iran, and then to cap-and-trade.  Pretty short, but he got Iran right for the first time.

12:32 – Mentions Neda Soltani, not by name, but a quick tribute.  Iranian govt must govern by consent, not coercion,

12:32 – “No iron fist” can stop the world from witnessing the oppression of the Iranian people.

12:30 – Obama starts off with Iran, says we are now “appalled and outraged,” and that he “condemns” the actions of the Iranian regime and joins in mourning the victims.  “Some in the Iranian government” are trying to avoid debate by blaming the US.  “This tired strategy” of scapegoating the US will no longer work.  Good stuff.

12:28 – Major Garrett reports that there will be no TOTUS in this presser.

Gotta love Krauthammer! And Brit Hume for that matter. Fox is really gonna relish holding the “weenie diplomacy” over Teh Won at every opportunity.

Maybe his major speeeecch writer was out sick today, so he had to come up with something quick to get himself on tv today. My guess is that this won’t happen again. He has given real-thinking Americans way too much fodder. The Department of Doublespeak will be working overtime to fix this.

Obama does not believe in American Exceptionalism; therefore, we have no special advice to offer the Iranian freedom fighters.

Major Garrett should have asked him about this.

No surprise here, since we are just one nation of many according to the “0″ he’s just showing that we aren’t the leaders of the free world anymore.

Amazing. Not one question on North Korea. As bad as Iran is, I can’t believe he had nothing to say about the ship the USS McCain is shadowing, nothing about NK getting ready to fire another missile, nothing about the two journalists.

Where is Team America?

Dave in San Diego on June 23, 2009 at 1:41 PM

Mr Magoo,

I get to watch tv at work, I have a great boss, ME!!!!

I am an entepreneur with a home office. Love my life. I gave up the corporate america cubicle rat lifestyle. In exchange, I make more money and also buy my OWN health insurance, fund my own retirement, etc. I am doing my level best to not depend on the government for anything, and corporate america either, since it just might end up as a government entity once obama is done wrecking our country.

karenhasfreedom on June 23, 2009 at 1:42 PM

Did Senator McCains statement on Iran influence you to make a stronger statement?

Obama: “I’m the President aaaaand…..aaaahhhh……did I mention I’m the President.

Matthews on Obama’s press conference: “I think the President held his cool, even though some of the questions bordered on “snarky”. What, no shiver up you’re leg when your press lackeys ask tough questions for a change Chrissy?

A public plan can deliver better administrative performance? With a workforce consisting of crack, GED-qualified ACORN employees?

What could go wrong?

Miss Molly on June 23, 2009 at 1:44 PM

Obama is so careful to use the secular language. How many times did he refer to “international norms”? How about God given rights? Or better yet, values steeped in the Judeo-Christian heritage.

International norms, in the way he means it, conflict with Islamic norms.

At least when it is scripted somebody has smartened up the bastard a little bit. Another reminder – being compared to Carter and Grant after a hair over 5 months in, is emphatically not a compliment. Especially if it’s unfavorably for you compared to them. You won, remember? Now start acting like an adult about it, and not like it’s still August before the election.

raparations? Neither side of my family was even here until after 1890. Raparations over my dead body. Only a small fraction of people in this country were rich enough to own slaves and also lived in slave state. Let their descendants pay for it to any one who today can personally prove personal harm from being the descendant of a slave. After all it has only been 145 years since that ended, and we were only a country for about 80 years before it ended.

In reality, Obama has been consistent to a certain extent. He’s been consistent in refusing to condemn the reprehensible. He’s been consistent in keeping the door open to have direct talks with the thugs who kill young girls on the street. He’s been consistent in calling street riots a free and open debate. To his mind, I’m sure that his lack of leadership has been consistent.

Unfortunately, that isn’t what is required in this situation.

highhopes on June 23, 2009 at 2:02 PM

My fellow American sisters, let’s take a moment to be thankful for the women and enlightened men who paved the way for our liberties, and be especially hopeful that similar freedoms will be afforded the women of Iran.

Right now, the following message is being forwarded amongst Iranian protesters across Twitter:

@oxfordgirl — Women, please do not listen to calls to take off Hijab on Thursday. Let’s keep protests about the election, we need one message only. #Iranelection #neda

To think, to THINK that these wonderful, brave Iranian women are being asked to subdue and limit their demands for liberty. I understand the strategy behind it, but it’s absolutely heartbreaking nonetheless.

I’m curious – “to see if she could get in”…does that mean that you were expecting the possibility of not getting her in? Also, if there was an emergency, why would you call with the need for an appointment? If it’s an emergency, don’t you just go straight to the doc/hospital without asking for permission? You sound like you are pleased having the government control your health care. Are you really? What if your daughter needed further medical treatment today, would you have to wait until the government deciders said it was appropriate? Or would you have the freedom to seek health care immediately? I have so many other questions because we really are worried about this here in America. It completely goes against our medical & moral fabric to relinquish ourselves to bureaucratic control. Not to mention the fact that an unrepresented minority will be paying all medical expenses for a growing population of people who pay nothing and receive everything.

Here in Canada with our ‘Socialized Medicine’, this morning my hubby called my daughter’s doctor to see if she could get in and lo and behold, her appointment is for 2:30 this afternoon!!! And for a non-emergency at that.

pcbedamned on June 23, 2009 at 2:12 PM

Okay, let’s see.

On the one hand, we have your single data point of a single appointment.

On the other hand, we have countless documented cases of Canadians coming across the border to the USA to pay (out of pocket) for medical care that is quicker to schedule and superior to anything you can get in Canada.

On whichever shall I base my opinion of Obamacare?

Daggett on June 23, 2009 at 2:47 PM

13:00 – “You have avoided twice” noting potential consequences for the Iranian mullahs, Chuck Todd says, but Obama says he’s not married to the “24-hour news cycle”.

But did he admit to having a slobbering affair with the news media?

I am completely at a loss as to how this whole health care thing is supposed to work.

My neighbor is a big guy, self employed, about 60 years old and he just told me he gets health insurance for $240 a month. High deductible. I am sure a lot of other people who do not have it, could also get that kind of insurance, but they do not want to pay for it.

I think a lot of folks are under the impression that Obama is going to give them free health care. I doubt it. I bet they will require that people with resources, buy it whether they want it or not and then subsidize it for everyone else.

This will cost everyone.

Terrye on June 23, 2009 at 2:50 PM

I am proud to say that I did not vote for Obama/Biden. It has become increasingly difficult for Obots to feel proud of their vote. Many now hang their heads in shame.

My co-worker’s father in law is Canadian. He had no problems getting to the doctor when his heart was bothering him…he was told he needed immediate heart by-pass surgery.

He was given a pager, told to go home and pack a bag, and they’d call him when they had a bed.

He got the call SIX weeks later…

…how freakin’ scary is that?

The brother of a good friend of mine recently had a triple by-pass, using robotic surgery. He went home two days later…

…care to hazard a guess which health care system I prefer?

A couple of weeks ago I got into see a doctor on less than a day’s notice and my insurance covered it. So what? Obama says this system is not sustainable and he wants to change it in spite of the fact that 75% of Americans say they are happy with what they have.

Technically, the good people of Canada should also be screaming NO to Obamacare. What shining city upon the hill will be there for them if they need a real doctor, real fast? We have several new Americans from Canada living near us…for a very good reason!

I’m not sure that they think it is going to be free but they think it is going to be cheap and of such high quality that every service is covered with low deductibles and immediate response.

The scary part, however, is that they also buy into the argument that (from scratch and without any glitches) the federal government will be able to create a public insurance plan that is superior in coverage and more efficient than the plans offered by private insurance. So much so that the private plans are going have to become more efficient to compete with this superior offering. All I can say is that Obamacare better have damned good mental health coverage because anybody that believes his scheme is workable needs to be locked because they are crazy.

Six weeks? That was fast. Just look at how much waiting time there is for “elective” procedures like liver transplants.

The thing more so than the quality of coverage that I am concerned about is the other end of the equation. The fact that there are not enough doctors in the system to have 100% of the population covered under a plan. The fact that Obamacare wipes out any profit incentive for medical professionals or drug companies.

I’ll consider universal health care if, and only if, its the same plan that the congress critters and el Presidente gets, or make them all have the same plan they give us.

I’m getting tired of the aristocratic pols saying, “Let them eat cake!”.

The wait for a liver transplant is contingent upon the availability of a compatible donor liver. The father-in-law was waiting for a BED to become available.

Sorry, I should have said that she was asking for an appointment just to talk to her doctor; she is not ill. Yes, for an emergency you would go to the hospital. As for your other questions, if anyone needs emergency care, they get it. As an example, last summer while doing a practice run (my daughter does stock car racing), upon taking a curve she hit an oil slick that hadn’t been caught yet, and ran into the wall at 110kms/hr (sorry, don’t know how many mph that is). As the paramedics were on scene, she was taken care of right away (boarded up) and to the hospital in less time than it took to get her out of the car. X-rays and bloodwork were done right away. All in all we were at the hospital for maybe 4 hours. Thank God everything came back fine and we could take her home. Cost -$0. As another example, last year (yep, it was a bad year), I got a call from my son’s school saying he had hurt his leg. The stubborn little bugger refused to go to the hospital. Finally, at 6pm I took him (the threat of no video games does wonders). In to see the doctor within minutes and sent to x-ray. Turns out that yes, the leg was broken. He was casted up and we were on our way home by 8pm. Cost -$30.00 for the crutches. And he was in to see the pediatric ortho surgeon within the week. He had 3 different casts put on and had excellent care. Cost – $0.
I could go on with personal anecdotes, but overall yes, I am very satisfied with the health care that I and my family have received over my lifetime. We get to pick our own Doctors, go to any hospital we wish, and the care we receive is decided by the Doctor – not some bureaucrat (be it governmental or an insurance hack).
As to your last statement, you already do that (welfare, medicaid, etc) as do we. Does it p*ss me off? To no end. Unfortunately, there will always be those that know how to work the system and it seems the honest are the ones who get royally screwed.
To most on this board, due to the close-mindedness of many and the propaganda thrown at you all about how bad ’socialized medicine’ is, it won’t matter a bit what I say about the way our system works and how you would be hard pressed to find a Canadian (Conservative or Liberal), who would trade our system for yours. And as for the ‘rationing’ and killing off all the old people, (one more anecdote and then off my soapbox), my grandfather, when he was 85, was diagnosed with leukemia. HE was the one who refused the chemo and radiation treatments (yes, they were offered). So again, bullsh*t on another talking point. Oh, and I don’t consider approx. 160 Canadians over a 3 year period to be Canadians flocking to the US. Our system isn’t perfect, but no one’s is.
Cheers

Summing up what I understood Mr. Obama to say about his statements about Iraq:

I don’t want to make too strong a statement because the Iraqi government will twist my words which they are already doing but it doesn’t matter what I say because the protesters aren’t listening to me anyway.

So…he’s being a wuss because it’s very important that people that aren’t listing to him don’t hear strong statements twisted into what his weak statements are already being twisted into.

Ho’kay. Makes sense to me.
