Iran state media: Hey, maybe a protester killed Neda

posted at 6:09 pm on June 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

Yeah, could be. None of them have guns, and as far as I know, not a single Basij or cop has been shot by a protester despite a full week of brutal beatings and killings. But aside from that, the theory’s airtight.

And now, the Iranian government is apparently claiming that rioters were responsible for Ms. Agha-Soltan’s death. The government-run Islamic Republic of Iran News Network (IRINN) reported that a “reliable source” confirmed after examining the bullet and the way Ms. Agha-Soltan was shot that rioters were responsible for her death, and that a number of people had been arrested in connection with her death.

How odd, then, that the regime would warn her family not to speak to the media and order mosques to cancel memorial services for her. As with Nicole Simpson’s murder, I guess the mystery will forever linger.

Two clips below as a gloss on this, to accompany Obama’s surprisingly sweet statement at today’s presser about how “heartbreaking” her death is. The second is a vignette from the streets of Tehran; be sure to watch until the end to see how another unknown woman was treated. Maybe the guy with the nightstick is a protester cunningly dressed as a cop? The first is audio from Al Jazeera English of an interview with Neda’s fiance, featuring previously unseen photos of her. He insists that she was deliberately targeted by the Basij, although there’s no way he could know that and, frankly, I think I’d rather not believe it. Not because I’d put it past them but because the thought of them scanning the crowd of angry protesters for someone to shoot and settling on her — a young woman who wasn’t even marching — is simply too much to bear. If it was a deliberate killing then the message is clear: Everyone but everyone is a target. And so they are.

This was inevitable. Of course the protesters did it. The government is run by God, so it is completely fair and benevolent.

The shot seems intended to kill her. I suppose a random shot could have just hit her in the heart, but it sure does not look that way.

These radical muslims sure have a hatred of women.

If it was a deliberate killing then the message is clear: Everyone but everyone is a target. And so they are.

I don’t think that’s the message. I think the real message is “Hot Iranian women watch your back, some undoubtedly frustrated Basij troglodyte who couldn’t get a woman if his life depended on it will take it out on you”.

Good thing Obama did not say anything sooner or there would have undoubtably been a 1000 girls even more beautiful killed as a result.

Good thing Obama said today that his Cairo speech was the cause of the uprising, becuase that saved another 1000 girls even more beautiful.

I had a feeling this BS was coming…but they obviously didn’t think it through since the only people in Iran that are supposed to have weapons are the military, the basiji, the revolutionary guard, and the Hezbolah thugs they brought in. Therefore for even the most pea-brained it isn’t difficult to determine they are lying azzholes, not very good lying azzholes I might add, as a matter of fact they lie about as well as they photoshop pictures!

As with Nicole Simpson’s murder, I guess the mystery will forever linger.

Not for me. There is no doubt in my mind that the Basji et al did this. Whether she was targeted or not doesn’t matter. The murder of either a bystander or a protester are part of the contrast between the brutal 7th century mentality of the regime and the hope for progress in the treatment of their citizens.

csdeven on June 23, 2009 at 7:30 PM

I guess that video of the young man with his intestines (or what ever that was!) hanging out of his groin area was really a self inflicted wound as well.

ctmom on June 23, 2009 at 7:33 PM

Let’s be honest here. What the final result for this woman is no difference than in any minority inhabited larger central city area in the United States. At least she had people with her when she dies. Here they’d just drive off. Are women treated with any better regard in that same part of the U.S. when it comes right down to being attacked, swore at or called names. Perhaps no stonings YET here.

Jeff from WI on June 23, 2009 at 7:37 PM

Breaking news!

Ochimpy to send troops to protect the protesters from themselves. Congress in turn announces the establishment of a fact finding mission to investigate all known associations of all protesters. Any Iranian associated with the American Legion and the VFW will be immediately arrested and brought in for interrogation.

csdeven on June 23, 2009 at 7:40 PM

If/when Israel goes after Iran’s nukes, I hope they bill Mahmoud and the mullahs for the ordnance and say they attacked themselves.

Bastards.

Christien on June 23, 2009 at 7:46 PM

After watching video prior to her being shot, I sincerely doubt that Neda was targeted. She was merely a bystander, watching the protest, but undoubtedly in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That the mullahs are now claiming she was shot by protesters is very telling of what an enormous effect Neda’s murder must be having in the population at large.

Everybody knows the protesters have only rocks, NO GUNS. That might float here where we are armed, but not in as tightly controlled a regime as Iran. What a bunch of BS.

Neda was one truly gorgeous young woman, wasn’t she? But to the Iranian rulers, all women are expendable, aren’t they?

Tragic. These are the monsters with whom Obama thinks he can reason.

RobCon on June 23, 2009 at 9:58 PM

I absolutely think the Basij targeted Neda. She was wearing a baseball cap, her scarf was loose, her face was clearly visible, and she was beautiful. This is a society where women are targeted and arrested for not wearing their veils or scarfs in the correct manner, or for looking too western, then frequently raped by their prison guards. Women who show a lock of hair, or too much of their face, are considered criminals because they “tempt” the men. I have no doubt that the Basij would pick Neda out of a crowd to kill. They would want to teach someone like that a lesson.

KyMouse on June 24, 2009 at 8:25 AM

Perhaps the Israeli bullet that curved its way around a concrete barrel and “killed” Muhammad al-Durrah ricocheted and also killed Neda.

Nothing in the world is less reliable than a “reliable source” in the Middle East or Washington D.C.

The truth should not be lost trying to find a “person(s)” responsible for Neda’s murder. We must remember the reason for the demonstration(s) is the people have had enough and they are not willing to take it anymore.

Our resurrected “Tea Parties” is our way of stating the same thing – we’ve had enough and are not going to take it anymore.

The difference – we are allowed to say it publicly without being murdered for it.
