Guess what we need? Another auto-industry commission

posted at 10:55 am on June 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama hasn’t learned anything from the collapse of GM.  The automaker stumbled in part from too much duplication in product, which apparently has given Obama the bad idea to launch duplicative commissions to handle the government involvement in the auto industry.  Four months after launching the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry, Obama will create a White House Council on Automotive Communities and Workers:

President Barack Obama is creating a White House council to handle issues that affect American communities and workers tied to the automotive industry.

The White House says Obama will sign an executive order Tuesday to establish the White House Council on Automotive Communities and Workers. The council will be chaired by the president’s economic adviser, Larry Summers, and his labor secretary, Hilda Solis.

The executive director will be Obama’s director of recovery for auto communities and workers, Ed Montgomery.

Who is Ed Montgomery?  Yet another auto-industry expert who’s, ah, never worked in the auto industry.  He led Obama’s transition team for the Department of Labor, and he’s held this director position since the end of March.  He joins the 31-year-old law-school dropout who was put in charge of the GM bankruptcy and Steve Rattner, the Auto Industry Task Force chief, who likewise never worked in the auto industry.

Speaking of Rattner, why does Obama need to create a new commission at all?  Larry Summers and Hilda Solis already sit on Rattner’s panel.  Why not just add Montgomery to it and expand their mission?  Oh, wait — Montgomery is also already on the Auto Industry Task Force.  And it’s not as though the AITF is focused like a laser beam on internal restructuring of the automakers anyway.  The AITF includes:

  • Environmental Protection Agency Administrator
  • Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change
  • Heather Zichal, Deputy Director, White House Office of Energy and Climate Change
  • Lisa Heinzerling, Senior Climate Policy Counsel to the EPA Administrator

The White House appears to have odd priorities.  They have three — count ‘em, three — “climate policy” advisers on the AITF for the past four months, and only now have added concerns about the impact of the auto industry collapse on “American communities and workers.”  Maybe Obama can create even more auto-industry “councils” and “task forces”, and instead of shuffling the same people between them, hire a few new faces … perhaps even people who have actually worked in the auto industry.

We could even give them cool names instead of these lengthy, clumsy titles.  We could call one Oldsmobile, another Pontiac, and so on.  Catchy, no?

I saw something last night about this. The unemployment rates are skyrocketing in a lot of battleground states, and a poll asking about support for his handling the economy has dropped in battleground states has gone from 63% to 50% in those states. And we haven’t even made it through a long, hot summer and headed into a fall and grim winter. This is going to get ugly in the Midwest because Obama ain’t got any answers. Promising a pair of Birkenstocks and a job in some green industry that’s still on the drawing board isn’t going to help anyone. Maybe he expects to get them all healthcare-industry jobs as information inputters in his recordkeeping boondoggle.

I can speak to that second-hand (well, a little closer than second hand, but not directly first-hand). My dad (GOD rest his soul) worked for Packard. I remember stories of the idiots running the place, which he would occasionally recount down through the years. It was the summer of ’56 when Packard shut down in Detroit. Dad was offered a chance to go with Studebaker, either to South Bend or Kitchener, Ontario. He turned it down. Later, when we were older, he said he didn’t figure either plant would survive more than 10 years. I’m not sure exactly when Kitchener went down, but South Bend was gone by the end of ’62.

This is exactly what I think too. Congress had better keep up, and watch out. With Congress, Obama has to abide, and keep confined within his executive branch. Without Congress, the world is his oyster. He’ll declare himself supreme ruler, and make the laws as he goes.

If they aren’t concerned about this, they should be!

I said “respected” and “diverse” not that I approve* of them.

It was a smart move by Zero at the start of his presidency to provide a “bipartisan” talking point for his propaganda arm (the MSM). To me, it seemed to provide some counter-evidence against the worst biographies (Steve Sailer, David Fredoso, and Stanley Kurtz). But they all seem to be right in the end.

The evil genious of Executive Orders are exempt from congressional approval. Having a voting block so huge will all but guarentee universal health care, cap and trade energy policy, and most ominous his reelection.

Executive Orders are exempt from Congress because they only deal with policies within the Executive Branch but they are not exempt from the law. Congress still has to approve spending so the dictator-in-chief can’t unilaterally impose socialized medicine or cap and trade.

Yeah….I’ll add Friedman to my list. Still, I would prefer fewer economic theorists and more businessmen.

Doesn’t he have plenty of money at his disposal from TARP and the stimulus? None of that seems to be auditable and I thought Congress had delegated some of the authority over it to his appointees.

We need more Commissions on Productivity

And then we need a Council on Commissions on Productivity
CCP
And then we need a Czar of the Council on Commissions on Productivity
CCCP

Congress still has budgetary authority and has to confirm the few legitimate nominees that can’t be hired Chicago style. More importantly, Congress is very jealous of sharing power or influence. Even with a Democrat majority, the dictator-in-chief ignores Congress at his own peril. Even a street thug like Obama had better not mess with Pelosi in a turf war.

You are right about the spending side and I hope that puts a stop to it, my point was having a voting block so huge no one would dare oppose his evil designs.
