Caught on tape: Ahmadinejad and clerics conspire to eliminate Iranian democracy?

posted at 1:35 pm on June 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

I’m flying almost completely blind here — not only is the clip in Farsi but I don’t know when it was taken or who he’s addressing — yet trusted Iranian Tweeters have been buzzing about it since this morning. The description at iReport is as follows:

DISCLAIMER:this video was sent to me from Iran which has video proof of ahmadinejad proposing to change the islamic republic system in IRan at the moment to chane it to a dictatorship where people do not have the right to vote. The Voter Fraud of June 12 is a direct result of this proposition. PLEASE RT

PLEASE USE YOUR FARSI TRANSLATORS TO VERIFY THIS.

That’s exactly what Howie at Jawa Report did, enlisting an Iranian dissident to translate. The translator’s reaction at first blush:

This is an extremely important meeting taken place in the holy city of Qom between Ahmadinejad and his mentor Ayatollah Masbah Yazdi and other clerics in which they speak of pure Islamic theocracy and implantation of it into the society more forcefully. I am between 10 different projects, I will send you something between the hours of 11:00 and 1:00.PM. FBI and CIA must get their hands on this video. It appears they want bloodshed in Iran.

And here’s the translator’s summary after watching the whole thing:

Apparently Mesbah Yazdi has spoken and it is Ahmadinejad’s turn to speak.

He thanks the audience with common Arabic courtesies:

Ahmadinejad humbly requests that special attention be paid to what he is to say which is about staring pure Islamic rule, not only in Iran but all over the world. He said we had a set back because we were not doing our Islamic duty to pressure people be more enlightened with Mohammadan Islam.

Islamic rule should not and cannot be limited only to Iran. Our efforts to expand it throughout the world are soon to be materialized with the help from God.

Struggle against corruption is of course enjoyable, but the ultimate joy will be the time when we realize the final heart-desired aim. We are always at work to realize that ultimate objective. I believe that revolution is beginning to find its way and a renewed evolution is taking place in it.

The revolution was hard and, began with difficulty, and the road ahead is even harder and more difficult. But this difficult road is exactly what to be expected.

There is enormous energy which has started within the country and is serving the country and is expanding, but needs guidance and supervision/management.

All the things that we have planned and talked about, is becoming a reality.

This plan needs strong ideological and operational support from you. The best place to start it is right here and in front of you. Who have the foresight, passion, experience and fortitude to ensure that it takes shape and becomes a reality.

I think timing is right, all necessary arrangements have been made. I seek your support and help. I am almost nobody compared to you in this struggle, in this grand movement. This is a blessing and is the beginning of a grand evolution in the world. I think this can become a reality. And building Iran as an example for others to follow and be a witness to on the road to realize the grand Islam.

It is possible to accomplish this, otherwise I would not be here sitting with you. Tehran is ready; the university is working on implementing it. Everything is taken care of in Tehran; we need your endorsement and approval.

It’s impossible to tell if this is Dinnerjacket’s standard nutty boilerplate about the Islamic paradise eventually conquering the world or if he’s talking about a more specific “plan” for hardliners to assert themselves in Iran by rigging the election in his favor. FYI, Mesbah Yazdi is not only Ahmadinejad’s mentor and a notorious fanatic even by Iranian standards, but he’s Rafsanjani’s chief rival on the Assembly of Experts, which has the power to appoint (and remove) the supreme leader. He leads the hardliner wing whereas Rafsanjani leads the, ahem, “pragmatists.” If the other attendees here are also members of the Assembly, this could be Ahmadinejad’s way of asking them to pressure Khamenei into endorsing the sham election results. And yes, it’s unlikely that a meeting to plot about this would be taped and leaked — but given the splits that have formed within the regime since the election, not unthinkable.

Howie has his own post on this with more from the translator, including an ominous observation about how deliberately Ahmadinejad seems to be speaking in code. I realize that aside from Tapper and a few people at Fox virtually no one in big media reads our site, but I’d like to think we have enough of an audience to collectively figure out what’s going on here. Any Farsi speakers/Iran experts willing and able to help? I’m 90% sure this can’t be as significant as it seems, but the 10% chance makes it worth investigating.

The ability to vote does not equate to the existence of a “democracy.” And, yes, I hate the use of that term, inasmuch as there are no “democracies” on the face of the earth.

They held elections in the Soviet Union. They held elections in Nicaragua, when the Sandinistas were in control. People voted for the Nazi party, at the same time that the brownshirts were murdering the opposition. Tyranny loves a rigged election … precisely because voting provides the false appearance of a “democracy.”

Democracy is simply one component in a stable government which exists to protect the rights of its citizens, and the mere practice of democracy by no means guarantees it.

OhEssYouCowboys on June 23, 2009 at 1:50 PM

I agree with you. That is why my question is genuine about their truly even having a “democracy.”

The real argument over there – aside from the outraged protesters – is not the fact the election was rigged, but just how thuggish and egregious the cheating is. Surely, most of the folks realized it was a done deal, but nobody likes having their face rubbed in it.
Eventually, people get a bit tired of the fakery and start thinking they can get the real thing – a voice in how they are ruled.

Larry Farr on June 23, 2009 at 2:01 PM

There is no democracy in Iran. The Iranian theocratic leaders have always controlled and cheated the election process. The difference now is that a new generation of Iranians is waking up to the lack of real democracy and are attempting to sway public opinion toward demanding a real democracy. I doubt that this will work any better than the Tiananmen Square protests did in China, but it is a positive development that could bear fruit down the road.

NuclearPhysicist on June 23, 2009 at 2:02 PM

Ominous yes, but nothing most thinking people with a functioning synapse didn’t already know about Im-a-mad-dinner-jacket or the Mad-Mullahs of Iran. The important thing in that observation is the fact Dinner-jacket and the Mullah’s aren’t mad in the drooling insane definition but more of the Hitler type madness, very deliberate in how they approach their goal, e.g., the players in this aren’t insane, it’s their religious and ideological beliefs and goals that are insane.

This is what makes them much more dangerous than a clinically insane person because not only are they fully aware of what they are doing they believe it is their destiny and it’s the right thing to do. That alone makes them very dangerous to the rest of the world and if we drag our feet on this and don’t do something to recognize this threat for what it really is (like with Hitler) and do something about it (sooner rather than later) more of the world will suffer and suffer greatly!

The Revolutionary Guard is so ingrained in the economy (mafia like, with better weapons) and in the politics, one can only conclude that they are pulling a coup of sorts. Maybe even to the detriment of the Mullahs political power

What “Iranian democracy”?

Even before all this it sounds more like a Commie/Soviet system where the candidates are picked ahead of time.

But, from the Iranian PTB perspective, not even allowing fake voting means that there will be little reason for people to protest like they are now.

Dr. ZhivBlago on June 23, 2009 at 2:41 PM

And yes, it’s unlikely that a meeting to plot about this would be taped and leaked — but given the splits that have formed within the regime since the election, not unthinkable. – Allah

sarc/ Why, it is so unlikely one would never even believe there would be any record of bin Ladin laughing about his followers exploits in ramming three airliners into public buildings in the Great Satan’s cities. How absurd that Muslims gloating over their coming “victories” over infidels would be thought possible by those of us who are doing nothing but fearmongering and slurring good people’s reputations with fears about Islamic supremacies and their desires to subjugate the world under the flag of jihad. No one would ever film any of those planning events because they could not possibly be true and never happened, right?

…..except, of course, they did. Didn’t they? And the mullahs messianic aims are as real as Hitler’s, Mao’s, and Stalin’s plans for worldwide domination and subjugation into slavery of those who were not found fit to belong to the same societies as the “Master Race”, or the “Communist Paradise” or the “Chosen Ones of Allah”.

There is a greater than 10% chance this is true, and that it means exactly what we fear…. because he has said these things again and again and again, in obtuse language because that is how he speaks. Hitler’s hand was never found on any scrap of paper involving extermination of the Jews, but is there any doubt that he was responsible and the motive force behind it? Stalin’s signature was not used to send millions of Russians and enthnic minorities to their deaths either, but is there any doubt he was the cause of those Deaths?

I’m tired of playing the games of objectivity here, Allah. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and smells like a duck, then it’s a duck. ImaNutJob has consistently and vocally called for extermination of Israel, terror against Americans, and institution of Islam worldwide, using “nuclear power”, peaceful or otherwise, as a means to advance his cause. That he chose to speak in code, and have it taped makes this no less damning than if he pulls the trigger on the guns of the Basiji and IRGC himself. He is a fruitcake fomenting the tyranny of the Koran, whether it says so or not, just as the Inquisition forced its will on Christianity using the Bible as a weapon, or allegiance to the Pope as a tool. Saying so out loud and in this forum does nothing to render any of these opinions illegitimate, and only makes fanatics of those who deny this is what is seems to be….

…a coolheaded and calculating thug asking his peers and superiors to allow him to champion their cause using his ways and with the consequences he sees fit, and the rights of innocents will be damned. This is tyranny pure and simple, and we had best stop dancing around the subject if we wish to continue our existence in this country, or others in theirs.
