Surprise: Public support for stimulus starting to collapse

posted at 7:41 pm on June 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

Turns out Americans don’t like it when they drop $800 billion to keep people working and unemployment continues to rise.

It’s your economy now, champ.

Overall, 52 percent now say the stimulus package has or will succeed in restoring the economy, down from 59 percent two months ago. The falloff in confidence in the stimulus package has been sharpest in the hard-hit Midwest, where fewer than half now see the government spending as succeeding. In April, six in 10 Midwesterners said the big, federal program had already worked or eventually would do so.

The shift in public assessments has clear political ramifications: At the 100-day mark of Obama’s presidency, 63 percent of people in states that were decided by fewer than 10 points in November said the stimulus had or would boost the economy. Today, in the telephone poll of 1,001 Americans conducted Thursday through Sunday, that number has plummeted to 50 percent in those closely-contested states, with 47 percent saying it won’t help the national economy.

The falloff since April cuts across partisan lines. Confidence in the package’s effectiveness has dropped from 81 percent to 73 percent among Democrats and from 32 percent to 26 percent among Republicans. Independents dropped from 56 percent to 50 percent. What was once a clearly positive assessment of the program among independents (56 to 39 percent) is now an almost evenly split (50 to 47percent).

The number who say America’s on the right track is down too, from 50 percent positive in April to 47/50 now. And that’s not all:

Two weak points on the domestic front remain: Obama still gets tepid marks on his handling of the situation with the big U.S. automakers and as many people disapprove as approve of his Obama’s handling of the federal budget deficit. On the deficit, intensity runs against the president, with 35 percent “strongly” disapproving, compared with 22 percent who say they are solidly behind what he’s doing on that topic…

One factor that continues to work for Obama, however, is that most Americans continue to see him as a new type of Democrat, one “who will be careful with the public’s money,” rather than an old-style, “tax-and-spend Democrat.”

Just sit tight on that last bit. The tax hikes are coming.

His personal popularity’s still rock solid at 65 percent but amazingly his ratings on foreign policy are higher than his ratings on domestic, which is supposed to be his bread and butter. If health-care reform falls through and he can’t figure out a way to postpone tax increases until his second term, what exactly does this guy have to run on in 2012, let alone in the midterms next year? The fact that the jobless recovery could have been somewhat worse? The new hybrid crapbox produced by GM? He’d better make those July 4th burgers extra tasty because the way things are shaping up, a nuke deal with Iran might be the only thing to save him.

Update: In case you’re wondering where those “jobs created or saved” numbers are coming from, it’s simple. If the feds drop enough cash on your employer that he/she can pay you with it, your job’s been “saved” — even if he didn’t need the money and wasn’t preparing to fire you.

Blowback

Looking forward to Barry blaming it on Pelosi. Barry wanted the credit for “his” stimulus when it was a popular idea. Remember that bill-signing photo op in Denver? But once it becomes a drag on him, the real author of the crap will go under the bus and the dem finger pointing will begin in earnest.

He’s already falling back on that argument. Hence all the “saved jobs” BS he and Biden are spouting.

I guess he’s counting on people being so stupid that they’ll believe that things would be worse under a Republican Administration. That and it’s all Bush’s fault. He’ll get 20-30% of the electorate with that nonsense, but most Americans(especially ones whose taxes have gone up or whose jobs have disappeared) will want him gone in 2012.

Here in DC, they’ve just had the worst accident in MetroRail’s history. At least four dead after a train ran into the back of another and one of the cars was literally cored out. Look for those percentages to creep down even further, when the June unemployment figures come in, and we edge ever closer to the 10% unemployment figure that Dear Leader promised us would only happen if we did NOT pass the stimulus bill.

Dick Morris was dead on when he saw this a almost instantly. With his overall popularity remaining generally the same while his agenda was polling weakly, they began to fall into line with one another. The likeability factor is starting to fade. People are starting to realize that a cute speech doesn’t trump the reality of his damaging policies. The Republicans better capitalize on this sh-t.

More than one-quarter of American states now have unemployment rates higher than 10%, and all but two saw a further deterioration in their job markets in May.

Tennessee and Illinois joined the rank of states, now 13, that have jobless rates exceeding 10%, and eight states — including California, Florida and Georgia — reached their highest level of joblessness since records began in 1976, the Labor Department reported Friday in Washington.

If and it is still a big if, the stock market tests or breaks its March lows, Obama is doomed.

All the current poll numbers also reflect a 35% rally in the market to date. With 70% of the electorate invested to some degree or another this influences how they feel. There is hope, with fingers and toes crossed.

New lows and folks will panic. (a little strong but you get the idea)

I think the only one who would have the nerve/spine/etc. to do it would be Ms. Clinton. In fact, Obama is making it easy for her to campaign against him by moving just slightly towards the center. It will be “campaign talk” but she could grasp the moderate lefts who will probably be sitting on the fence in three years.

What if Obama’s approval ratings were already well under 50% and there was major buyer’s remorse and the impression that the guy has either no clue or is purposely trying to tank the economy? Would this mass revelation make any immediate positive impact on the economy? To put it another way, is the fact that so many people who voted for him are still in denial and are keeping their fingers crossed that somehow his inane economic policies will work, therefore slowing this inevitable mass realization of what a fraud he is, making the economy worse?

I have to disagree about your take on HRC. She literally sold out her chances when she accepted the SoS position. She should have remained in the senate. Her wish to gain more gravitas through foreign affairs experience is a plus in some circles but it is also a minus to her as well. Her policies are not hers. The policies that she is now pressing around the world are Obama’s. She is now a dupe. The strength she had during her primary run for the DNC presidential nomination has now been voided because she compromised her positions abroad and domestically. Specifically, she would not have done what Obama did to address the economy (Bill would have coached her to be more moderate) or nationalize the private sector. And other differences concerning isues abroad, HRC would not do an apology tour snubbing our allies and glad handing dictators. So there you have it. She should have stayed in the senate. She made a poor calculation which reflects the desire to remain close to power rather than sticking to her own American democratic ideals. She has tainted herself by succumbing to the Obama rhetoric and there is no going back now. Resigning now is also a mistake as well. Future is not set. You can’t change what has transpired in your past remissions. She can not reverse this abatement with any intensity now. She has soldout her values and traded them in for soft tyranny of power. Bad moves all around IMO.

Americannodash on June 22, 2009 at 9:32 PM

his ratings on foreign policy are higher than his ratings on domestic, which is supposed to be his bread and butter.

The state media can control what people know of foreign events then they can domestic events.

It is easy to say that Obama has the Islamists on the run with his “smart power” and hard for the average voter to verify it.

On the other hand, the state media can tell you how great Obama is day and night after you’ve been laid off and the shinola is a bit more obvious.

It is ignorance and naivety, not stupidity.

Essentially the media sold a narrative during the last couple of years that in the end gave us Obama. People knew the media was biased, but they didn’t realize that the current state media was then Obama’s real campaign.

Consider, for example, the large minority of voters convinced the Republicans were running Congress in 2006-8 when the economy began to slow. Would they have voted for Obama if they knew he was one of those bums in the Congressional majority they were trying to throw out?

I said no. She immediately said that was a racist attitude, but when I tried to explain that no it had nothing to do with the color of his skin but the fact because he is a far left liberal with zero experience and dangerous ties and will lead this country further down the path of socialism, she walked away.

When Americans finally see the big picture, they don’t go along the MSM ideology, only when they are duped is socialization likely and boy have Americans been duped.

In April, six in 10 Midwesterners said the big, federal program had already worked or eventually would do so.

This is so dismissive it’s not even funny. I mean of midwesterners (I guess I’m one of those being in Michigan). Typical liberals are not even paying attention, left leaning centrists barely care, as long as they get fed some kind of government money.

That is, until their house is forclosed on and their car reposessed, then it’s Bush’s fault.

The only government spending that would do any good for these people would be to fund research and production of a special tool that would assist the left in getting their heads out of their asses.

Boy, I’ll tell you who is happy: all those bus drivers and mechanics revvin it up for Nancy.

I never thought I’d have so much fun in a such a cra**y economy like this.

DC/Obama/Dem meltdown.

Like watching Rome burn.

Biden said, “We guessed wrong” on whopping stimulus package that has already sent us over the edge, with no effect.
I see that Oregon now surpasses 12% unemployment.
Nevermind, says our trusty government. MOVE ON!!! We’re
now talking about healthcare, and yesterday’s crisis
stimulus is soooooooooo out of fashion. WE”RE TALKING
FREE, I SAID FREE, HEALTHCARE!!! Diane Sawyer is already
giving us a sneak-preview on how absolutely awesome this
will be!!!!! Imagine: This creative and robust initiative
will give 43 million people the best healthcare EVAH. And,
at the bargain-basement price (Nancy Pelosi was flabbergasted
that PEOPLE SEEM TO DO THIS OVERESTIMATE THING, AND THEY
DON’T EVER GO ON THE LOW SIDE, ALWAYS SEEM TO POOH-POOH
HER IDEAS WITH THESE OBNOXIOUS REALISTIC COST ESTIMATES.

What we’re looking at is, at least a couple trillion dollars that we do not have to insure that 43 million
have sufficient health insurance.

Sometimes, I ponder the thought that if Oprah had won the
presidency, AT LEAST we’d get a new car out of the deal, plus the car manufacturers would be in the gravy. Problem
solved.

Support starting to collapse?

ex-Democrat on June 23, 2009 at 2:38 AM

honestly think, as Obama plummets,, Hillary has an opportunity to stand out. If she were to come out and resign with a statement that she can no longer support Obama or some such thing,,, she has an opportunity to look courageous and to separate herself and keep her future secure. There are a lot of Dems out there that are becoming worried,, and Hillary separating herself would give them hope. And I think it would open up another chance for Hillary in 2012. I think if she did that,,, it would be a blow to Obama and a blow to Republicans. She would no longer be attached to this failing administration. Just my own humble opinion,,,, Obama knows the Clintons are the only really threat within the party.

You give HRC too much credit.

When has Hillary EVER stood up for something she believed in? Ever?

Embarrassingly enough, the “feminist, gung-ho woman’s rights” former first lady stayed with her cheating husband out of political expedience.

As a financially and socially secure woman, Hillary could have send a strong message to the entire female populace that women don’t need to be treated that way. Think of all the women that are in a situation like the one she found herself in, but they can’t get out of it because they “need to make the rent.”

She only started running to the center/right the second she needed the votes of those “Reagan Democrats” in the primaries. She doesn’t really care about Israel one way or the other, unless they can get her votes. She hated Bush for saber-rattling (whatever THAT would entail in her mind) but then wants to “obliterate Iran if they try to get a Nuke”.

She HAD to run to the right on National Security during the primary because she had the POLITICAL SENSE to not apologize for her Iraq WAR vote because she knew that would be the kiss of death in the GENERAL ELECITON.

But make no mistake, this IS the same Hillary that sat across General Petraeus , eyes over her glasses like a second grade teacher, and said “your numbers require the willing suspension of disbelief.” when he said the surge was working.

And if anything she IS ABSOLUTELY for nationalizing many parts of the private sector, including a mandate on healthcare, with stiff tax penalties for those who don’t comply.

Hillary doesn’t have a political core, just a team of advisors (including Mark Penn) that tell her what to say and how to say it.

I can’t stand to see what Obama is doing, but in one sense, I absolutely shudder to think what Hillary would be doing, because she is much more determined at getting things done (it seems like). Obama just has that deer in the headlights look about him all the time. And although Obama uses thug style politics all the time (Strong arming companies, talking to lobbyists through back channels, threatening boards, and firing IGs) he still enjoys his personal popularity, so he (ocasionally) tries to split the difference on certain issues, like Iraq withdrawl (Same SoFA under Bush), keeping military tribunals (although he’s reading some of them miranda rights….ugh…), or the surge in Afghanistan (something Bush had always talked about)

Hillary has that “I wish squash you to get MY legislation through” look about her. She was already in Washington for 8 years. And in the National Political scene for the last 25. Her and her husband know the levers of power and how to manipulate legislation and twist arms through out the city to get their agenda passed. It is time for the Clintons to go.

Well said. I totally agree with you. Hill sold out big time. She wasn’t even a PUMA when PUMAS were begging for her to not follow the Obamunist. She campaigned for Obama and took all his abuse. She helped get Murtha reelected. Also all the Clintonistas are now in the Barry Regime. Hill is a total Party girl without principles of her own. I am done with the Clintons.

She called Petraeus a liar and he ended up helping win the war in Iraq.

The only poll that has been consistently accurate is Rasmussen and they have the approval rating for Obama between 53% and 56%. Not quite so rock solid

G.W. Bush must take some of the heat for this. His overreaching, progressivism and profligate spending set up the pins. Ogabe knocked them down.
(Given Odumbo’s bowling average maybe that was a poor analogy)

I don’t see it hurting republicans. I see it as a replay of Kennedy in 1980.

Vashta.Nerada on June 23, 2009 at 9:28 AM

To put it another way, is the fact that so many people who voted for him are still in denial and are keeping their fingers crossed that somehow his inane economic policies will work, therefore slowing this inevitable mass realization of what a fraud he is, making the economy worse?

ardenenoch on June 22, 2009 at 8:30 PM

There’s probably a lot of that out there–people who put so much HOPE in YES HE CAN! that they find it hard to believe that he really can’t and WON’T, and that the 95% whose taxes Obama would cut doesn’t include THEM. There are probably lots of people “in the middle” who might have considered voting for McCain, but WANTED TO BELIEVE in Obama’s dreams so passionately and leg-tingly, and they still WANT TO BELIEVE they made the right choice. So, for now, some of them oppose his policies in polls but still support the man, the personality, the nostalgia for the tingling legs and feel-good speeches.

But when reality hits them squarely in the face, when they lose their jobs, when they get a huge tax bill, when they finally realize they’ve been fleeced, they will be angry. And Republican House candidates in 2010 need to have a good alternative, and welcome them with open arms.

Steve Z on June 23, 2009 at 10:16 AM

If and it is still a big if, the stock market tests or breaks its March lows, Obama is doomed.
All the current poll numbers also reflect a 35% rally in the market to date. With 70% of the electorate invested to some degree or another this influences how they feel. There is hope, with fingers and toes crossed.
New lows and folks will panic. (a little strong but you get the idea)

What an abysmal state we find ourselves in when we “HOPE” for worse and worse economic news so that we can have a “CHANGE” in the White House. Not that I disagree, mind you. Hopefully, we won’t be flushed so far down the sewer we can’t swim our way out again.
