State Dep’t: Iranian diplomats still welcome to celebrate July 4th with U.S.; Update: Video added

Via Weasel Zippers, a gesture of solidarity per our two nations’ shared interest in life, liberty, and shooting women in the heart on the street, I guess.
Not even a disinvitation to the barbecue on America’s birthday as punishment for killing protesters, huh, Barry? Absolutely the lowest moment of his presidency thus far.
President Barack Obama’s administration said earlier this month it would invite Iran to US embassy barbecues for the national holiday for the first time since the two nations severed relations following the 1979 Islamic revolution.
“There’s no thought to rescinding the invitations to Iranian diplomats,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters.
“We have made a strategic decision to engage on a number of fronts with Iran,” Kelly said. “We tried many years of isolation, and we’re pursuing a different path now.”
Below you’ll find a new clip of The One’s hot-dog buddies in action. No idea when or where it was taken, but it doesn’t matter. The official death toll over the weekend was 17; assuming this was recorded on Saturday and considering that we’ve got yet another corpse caught on film here, how likely does that number seem to you? Strong content warning, needless to say.
A HuffPo blogger astutely describes the regime’s strategy now as “Tiananmen in slow motion,” aimed at strangling the protests with periodic scattered violence to avoid the media clusterfark of a grand massacre. Mousavi’s countermove is keeping people out of the streets with tomorrow’s planned national strike, which an ABC analyst in Tehran says will be big shakes if it comes off. Assuming it does — and the same analyst says activity is already sparse at Tehran’s bazaars — the next eruption could/should come on Wednesday, when the Guardian Council announces the results of its sham probe into the sham election results. Contain your surprise at learning that preliminary findings have indicated no fraud.
Something to ponder while you watch. If the revolution stalls now and heats up again, say, in two years, how will a nuclear-armed Khamenei respond to the prospect of being toppled from power? That is to say, even if you believe the mullahs can be trusted to act rationally under normal circumstances, can they also be trusted to act rationally under abnormal circumstances? Exit quotation: “[T]he Iranians are missing two words from Obama: ‘I condemn.’”
Update: RCP has video of the State Department presser. Biiiiig smile.

How does Wednesday line up with that 3/7/40 day Shiite mourning cycle that someone wrote about over the weekend? If it’s timed from Neda’s burial, doesn’t that put put the first major mourning day at the same time that the mullahs are certifying their results? A bit of a powderkeg…

Well, nothing gets in the way of a good party…wonder if they’ll bring their own fireworks?
Of all the no-cost means to convey disgust with a foreign government, a simple non-invite should be sent out to the Mullahtocracy. Civilized governments have done this for decades and decades. Instead, the Administration is worried about sending out the “wrong signals?”
How about this “wrong signal?” “What you are doing is disgusting, and contrary to civilized standards, and those espoused by the UN Declaration on Human Rights, as well…but we don’t mind all that much, really, and we still want to cozy up to you once the smoke clears and the streets are swept clean and mopped up…cause we wanna be best friends, K? And besides, we are too weak to do anything that might upset ya’ll.”
And they call this smart diplomacy? Sheeesh…

China is and was different. For one thing, the Cultural Revolution killed tens of millions of Chinese. The Chinese had been dealing with their people in very repressive ways long before Tiananmen Square. But there were concerns about North Korea and other issues as well.
Terrye on June 22, 2009 at 6:57 PM
That’s a valid point, but the surrounding circumstances are different. The Iranian problem revolves, mostly, around the nuclear issue (which The Precedent was hoping to hide until the Iranians actually had a nuke test, then doing nothing because ‘they have nukes’). This wasn’t the case in China – though there’s no question that the US fell down on its face, embarrassingly so, during that event.
The difference in this case is that the whole thrust of The Precedent’s moronic ideas about Iran was that a US President sitting at an official negotiating table with Achmadinejad and hte other savages lent no legitmacy to them, at all – that diplomacy was friction-less and free. That has been blown out of the water, though the moron refuses to acknowledge it, as it would reveal what an impenetrable fool he is (though anyone with a brain already knows that). This further push just shows how dumb he is.
There is no comparison between the two situations, that I see, and The Precedent is trying to play this one so that he is able to avoid the nuclear issue and hope that Iran gets it all finished before anyone in the West (Israel, specifically) is able to do anything about it. The contradiction in B Hussein’s own rhetoric is so stark (he just gave that moronic talk in Cairo two weeks ago) that no one can really escape it.

Lighten up guys, maybe O thinks the 4th of July simply celebrates the entry of our 57th state.
I’m really ticked about this too. It was quite a stretch to even invite them in the first place but now every Iranian official should be thrown out of the country with the remaining Gitmo Terrorists on their plane.
Talk about symbolism! This piece of garbage is all about symbols when it comes to himself and making new logos, signs, pillars and the like – so one has to believe that the shoes on the desk were not more an accident than this invitation.

This has moved way beyond Mousavi, it is more about true freedom, liberty, and justice. The Mullahs in their brazen act of fraud basically said all Iranian’s are stupid and they wouldn’t know they had the election stolen from them, add to that the Mullah’s and their thugs are now murdering their own people and you’ve moved beyond a fraudulent election to pople being pissed and fed up wanting justice and to be set free!

I rambled a bit on my first response. Succinctly, the difference with Iran and Tienamen Square is that the reasoning offered by The Precedent for not backing the protesters (that that would give legitimacy to the regime to kill them and blame the US) is exactly at odds with his earlier reasoning that negotiations don’t automatically lend some legitimacy to those accepted as our negotiating partners. The Precedent is losing both sides of the argument, at the exact same time, which is pretty unbelievable.

Hey, why not invite the Iranians over for hot dogs and fireworks on the 4th?

Just left this comment over at Weasel’s place: Pass it On…
…if South Chicago Jesus is dead-set on having the bloodthirsty mullahs in for 4th of July parties, then I suggest a couple things:
1. A massive web-based nationwide protest campaign aimed right at the WH, demanding that the J4 invites be IMMEDIATELY withdrawn. 5 million phone calls to the WH. You Tube protest vids. Tweetstorms, whatever techies do these days to get a mass mobilization message around quickly.
2. Or…if the Ice Cream Man lacks the basic common sense humanity to properly dis-invite these Islamic freaks from a celebration of human liberty over tyrannical rule, then EVERYONE WHO CAN POSSIBLY DO SO should go to the WH on J4 and protest outside.
How powerful would THAT symbol be…bring in as many Iranian-Americans as possible, joined by as many other Americans and friends from all countries, and stand outside the WH demanding that our Observer-in-Chief DO HIS FOOKIN JOB as leader of the free world and take a stand against the mullahs, whose minions will be eating specially-prepared halal foods at the WH BBQ.
Imagine the possibilities people…Just.Imagine: 250k people outside the WH while Obama entertains the mullahs on America’s birthday!!! It would be a well-deserved rebuke for Obama’s conduct thus far regards Iran and the brutal crackdown playing out in front of the world’s eyes. More importantly, such a massive public protest against The Rookie’s near-unforgivable temporizing would give hope and inspiration to our friends in Iran who are in dire need of some part of the free world to speak out boldy and decisvely in their defense.
Think about it and spread the word.

I see that he has not been able to articulate an intelligent position on Iran, but that’s no surprise – I find Obama to be a juvenile nitwit incapable of a coherent argument. He is just a puppet for some speechwriter.
His earlier assertion, as articulated by others, was that engagement will be more effective long-term than isolation. Clearly, that was both the tenor and word of Bush 41, as well, which is one reason I never liked Bush 41, and one reason why he lost to a douche like Clinton.
But view China carefully, for if you believe that economic engagement and (what I consider) very soft criticism by GHWBush in the face of 2,300 dead civilian protesters and over 5,000 injured was ultimately the right path, then outrage over this piddling 20 or 100 dead Iranians is going to be hard to justify.
That’s not my position, and I believe that the ChiComs who killed those kids are murderers who should be dragged from their beds and beheaded right now, just like the scumullahs. But right now, Obama only looks a little stupider, less articulate, and less coherent than Bush 41.

Inviting them to a round table discussion is one thing, and still wrong, in my opinion. Inviting them pre-RevoII to our independence day celebrations smacked of betrayal since such an invitation would be gladly extended to one’s friends. Iran, as we have known them, is not one of them. After the latest events and widespread coverage, inviting this repugnant regime as friends to a special AMERICAN holiday makes me more than sick. OUR PRESIDENT DOES NOT CARE ABOUT OUR COUNTRY. Why would he do this if he cared a lick about our principles or our traditions? I’m out of words.

I don’t. I have been against engagement with China (not for human-rights reasons, but because I didn’t trust their government and viewed them as a threat – I still do, even moreso, now). I’m with you on this. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression. My only distinction was that the situation over Tienanmen was not as consequential, by tiself, as this Iranian one, since the clock on Iran’s nukes is about to run out.
I agree with you. This is why I have said, since the beginning of this whole event, that the first responsibility The Precedent has is to apologize to the American people for having been such an idiot with his insane desire to unconditionally negotiate with Tehran.
He should back the protesters, not out of any moral issues or calls for a liberty that they don’t want and that The Precedent is busy killing here, anyway, but to keep the Iranian regime off-balance while looking for an opening to take out their nuclear industry – which is job one for the civilized world.

Pretend they’re something really bad. Pretend they’re Chrysler’s secured bondholders. You remember how you said that you ‘didn’t stand with them’? You might just slip up and say that you don’t stand with the Iranian government.
That’s it, Barry! Instead of seeing the mullahs as tyrants, pretend they’re hedge fund managers, you know – capitalists.
Better idea, close your eyes, pretend that Khamenei works for AIG and just got a bonus, and let it all out.

Daggett on June 22, 2009 at 8:06 PM
Actually the oath he betrayed is even worse than the one the military takes. Part of the military’s oath talks about obeying the orders of the President of the US. Obama’s oath talks about preserving, protecting, and defending the Constitution. How can he claim to doing these things to the best of his ability when we all are watching him shred that document every single day in every single action?

That’s why I suggested (in another thread, I think) that republicans make a big stink about Obama violating the constitution and breaking laws. They can’t impeach him with such a big democratic majority, but making a big stink would get on the mainstream news. And that would reveal just how corrupt and evil Obama is. When public opinion goes against him, Congress will start voting differently.
