Politico: Hey, guess who’s polling worse these days?

It’s not quite the same as having the New York Times or the Washington Post notice that Barack Obama has descended the polling heights of the Barackopolis to the more mundane levels normally associated with a new president, but Politico will do. Noting that Obama’s polling has started to “wilt,” Andy Barr and Michael Falcone blame the economy, which is the leading cause of Obama’s misery — until the polling starts to figure in his Iran response:
Eroding confidence in President Barack Obama’s handling of the economy and ability to control on spending have caused his approval ratings to wilt to their lowest levels since taking office, according to a spate of recent polls, a sign of political weakness that comes just as he most needs leverage on Capitol Hill.
The good news for Obama is that his approval ratings—57 percent in a Gallup tracking poll over the weekend—remain comfortably high by historical standards for presidents.
But the trend lines among a variety of polls over the past several days are unmistakable: Independents and even some Republicans who once viewed him sympathetically are becoming skeptical, and many people of all stripes are anxious about economic and fiscal trends.
The honeymoon is definitely over, which Barr and Falcone see in just about every poll in the last two weeks:
Surveys released last week by Pew, NBC News/Wall Street Journal and The New York Times/CBS News, show the percentage of Americans show a similar pattern. The Pew survey, for example, registered an eight-point drop in public approval for Obama’s handling of the economy—falling from 60 percent to 52 percent between mid-April and June. The percentage of Americans who disapprove jumped by 7 points during the same period.
Though Democrats are still generally more supportive of the administration overall, the slide in the president’s economic numbers defied partisan boundaries. The Pew survey, for instance, showed support for Obama’s handling of the economy sliding six percentage points even among Democrats and independents.
Conservatives shouldn’t get too excited about Obama’s numbers. He remains a likable figure, with personal polling remaining high. Ronald Reagan had high personal numbers, too, and he leveraged his popularity to win political battles many predicted he’d lose.
The problem for Obama is the rapid decline in his support on job performance, and the shrinkage in numbers on policy areas, especially economics. Obama wanted to focus on economic policy in his first two years, but his first major foray, Porkulus, has been exposed as a busted flush. That will drag down his ability to gain enough votes on health-care reform and cap-and-trade, two ambitious and hugely expensive plans at a time when many Americans wonder how Obama will find the money.
Unemployment will make or break Obama for the midterms. If it hits double digits and stays there after spending almost $800 billion on the liberal wish list of social engineering projects, voters may still like Obama personally but will make sure that they give him a Congress that will radically limit his ability to spend any more of their money. ehhh… I’ll withold judgement about the honeymoon being “over” after the propaganda blitz for health care is over. It has all the earmarks of Obama trying to “re-create” his image.
Now that the Iranian protesters have been subjugated and all, we have to….move on and it’s unfortunate we couldn’t do anything but we still have an open olive branch to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Oh and we’ll send a destroyer out after a North Korean vessel to intercept it… for a week… and it still hasn’t… but we’re going to find it anyday now. The US isn’t going to be pushed around, nosirreebob…

We’ve seen how testy he gets under even slightest pressure…that’s eventually going to start showing up more as people start to question his idiotic policies. Once he starts snapping (and he will), his likability will give way to vindictiveness and the cute, cuddly, Obama god will turn into the nasty, vengeful, Chicago Obama god…turning off even more voters.

Hey all, we will just have to create a lot of turnout in the primaries and vote for the most fiscal conservative candidate on either side of the aisle in the primary. With a huge Dem majority, this just might be a great opportunity to get the fiscal conservative win in the primary and help a newcomer pummel the incumbent big spender in Congress for the main election in November. I am going to be optimistic. I felt this same way all the way in my bones during the summer of 94. I was probably the only one NOT surprised at the crushing defeat of the Dem majority in Congress that year. I feel a similar Tsunami wave forming now.
Obama is striking out in all directions right now. This is becoming quite entertaining.
One key thing. EVERYONE go to a tea party on July 4th weekend.

AUINSC on June 22, 2009 at 5:46 PM
I read the article on politico and the “left” argued the republicans (not in those words, naturally) stated how their approval ratings are super low.
I’ll ask you more knowledgeable people. Could this not be because, as a conservative, I am not happy they are not being more forceful in standing for conservative prinicples – as could the people they are polling?
usedtobeinmich on June 22, 2009 at 5:47 PM
Let’s not forget that some of these “polls” regularly oversample Democrats. The new C-BS/NYT “poll” samples 14% more Dems than Repubs, and a recent AP one sampled twice as many Dems as Repubs.
So his real “job approval” might be even worse than these new numbers suggest.

Well, less irresponsible anyway. Obama has quadrupled the deficits above Bush’s worst year. If the Republicans can bring the deficits back to Bush levels, it would be a 75% improvement! Worth a try, anyway!
Steve Z on June 22, 2009 at 5:48 PM
There has been a disconnect in his polling numbers for some time now. The low poll numbers for his policies are now dragging down the favorability/likeability numbers, and the lower personal approval numbers are bringing the policy numbers into focus. As long as unemployment remains high, this will put downward pressure on all of his numbers. A significant correction in the markets will also contribute significantly to these downward trends.

jaketapper(3) for 1st time since POTUS took office, views of whether US is going in the right direction gotten worse-from 50% in april to 47% now

Obama’s biggest problem is the average American is worried about deficits and unemployment right now. While Obama can argue that these problems did not begin under his term, it is becoming inarguable that he is not making both problems worse.
Take the latest example of Obama-care: the insurance companies employ hundreds of thousands of Americans at least. (Statewide employs 85,000 alone.) Yet if Obama-care is successful, most of these jobs will be lost since private insurers won’t be able to compete with the government’s plan. Furthermore, if certain projects are correct, Obama-care will cost the taxpayer $400,000,000 a year. If borrowed, that will add to the cost of simply servicing our debt by about $18 million dollars a year, every year, for the next ten.

With most economists predicting that unemployment will continue to rise all through 2010, and now more economists saying that home prices will continue falling through next year (and beyond), it appears we’re going to be in even deeper economic doo-doo next year than we’re in now. And as Serpent-Head Carville always liked to remind us, when it comes to a politician’s re-election chances: It’s the Economy, Stupid!

When the history of this dreadful administration is written, it will be noted that he came in with a mandate (or at least the appearance of one) and he frittered it away on a Stimulus monstrosity, a supplemental bill of similar proportions, and showed every inclination of spending this country into oblivion. Add to that his deferential treatment of the odious Pelosi, his embarrassing (to us) apology tours, his silly Islamophilia, rising unemployment, and the faint echoes of Wright and Left-wing antisemitism, and you end up with exponential decay in popularity.
I have maintained, even throughout the media-slobbering days of sycophancia, that this is the grand finale of the Progressive Era. It is going out with what looks like a bang, but is really an IOU for a whimper.

What I’m interested in seeing is what the mid-stream media does when The BO08’s poll numbers tank (see, for example, this article. It’s from an Australian perspective, but a noted (and accurate) economist is pretty much convinced the economic trouble is only just starting).
