The fact that intellects such as Krauthammer have a voice on the national stage is the only thing that allows me to hope that this country might some day return to it’s senses.

Krauthammer should be prosecuted for war crimes… for what he just did to Geraldo! At least that’s what the UN would say.

Our losing presidential candidate wasn’t too bad either. He wasn’t the right man at the right time in ’08, and I know he receives less than unanimous, ahem, support in these parts for a mixture of reasons, but on foreign policy he’s still one of the best politicians we have. His QOTD is right on target: This isn’t just about Iran. For us, it’s about us – and that’s not a small thing, whether the President and his defenders seem to realize it or not.

I think Jerry Rivers should be sent on an extended North Korean assignment. Maybe have a one on one with that Kim Jong Il guy. I’m sure Kim Jong Il could find a lot of ditches that need digging. Then of course they could talk about the arts or something like that while he is shoveling. He seems to shovel a lot of BS here and besides his presense on Fox just dumbs down the audience.
Americannodash on June 21, 2009 at 9:50 PM
Julien Epstein and Ann Coulter, lots of straw being burned in that one…
Krauthammer doesn’t just burn down strawmen, he reframes the objective of “discussion.” An objective that Epstein et al conveniently ignore: classic liberalism (pre-Wilsonian applications that is…) has a tremendous and positive history.
Of course Epstein etc. are classic and media pretty partisan operatives and should be taken with very LITTLE salt.
Hark I hear a head rattling…..

Had a similar conversation about the Hammer earlier today with a friend of mine. When I think of all the various people in America who espouse a Conservative philosophy, he is one of the best.
There’s something in his delivery that seems very logical n but still retains an element of emotion which many others lack.
I believe if he ran for a national office, he’d have an excellent chance of winning if he was able to communicate his message to the masses of Americans.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on June 21, 2009 at 9:55 PM
i wish conservatives would take apart these “anchors” all the time.
they always engage in this. Maybe they should take a special class from Charles. They can learn what a strawman is, what the underlying assumptions are. They need to be able to speak truth to power and not be afraid. A little assertiveness training along the way.
Generally I think our guys aren’t very bright…but maybe they can be trained.

I once wrote him a fan letter, back in 2004 or 2005. I found his email address on one of the sites that posted his columns. He was kind enough to write back to me. Wow, how cool is that? In my email, I told him how much I appreciated the way he voiced his views, framed his arguments and was a great representative for those who are trying to do the right thing here in America.

I suppose I could elaborate on why I consider McCain to be one of our best politicians on foreign policy, but, then again, he was kind of in the news for the last 2 – 30 years enunciating his foreign policy positions in great detail. Doesn’t mean I agree with him 100%, but I think he gets the big things mostly right. As important, functionally he’s still the more recognizable Republican leader on foreign policy – and better him than, say, Lugar or Powell.

I believe that there are a lot of reasons that Obarfo is being the jerk he is about this, all of which have already been stated at HA (can’t prove Bush right about democracy coming to the region, his sympathies lie with the Islamists, etc), but listening to Krauthammer I’ve thought of a new one. Krauthammer says, “The only hope of ever acheiving de-nuclearization or containment of the program is precisely if the revolution succeeds in the streets and you end up with a moderate governtment…” Obarfo knows that if a moderate government comes in, it will be easier to negotiate with them and that wouldn’t be seen as great an accomplishment than if he negotiates with a radical like Ahmedinajad. Plus, he desperately wants to show the world that America now negotiates with terrorists and if Ahmedinajad gets voted out, his dream will be squashed.
I’m sure that this has already been articulated here, but I haven’t read all the posts. But it was a new thought for me.
Thanks for this QOTD, AP, I had missed this interview earlier.

Charles Krauthammer is way to intelectually agile for Geraldo. He thought being the host he could trap Krauthammer by defining the argument in his limited view and Krauthammer gave him a spanking.

I wonder if Geraldo’s tune will change once the Regime in Iran decides to stop mucking around and really cracks down on the protesters. Once they start bringing in troops and armour, expelling the international media and start shutting down the lines of communication to the rest of the world those poor people in the streets of Tehran demanding their rights really will be on their own.
It makes me sick to think that that there are public figures in this nation who believe that it is perfectly acceptable to stand idly by and say nothing while these brave people in Iran are brutally crushed for demanding the same sort of freedoms we take for granted everyday. People like Geraldo and yes even President Obama should hang their head in shame for what is about to happen in Iran because their behaviour is akin British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of Nazi Germany before WWII and I would encourage them to heed the words of Edmund Burke who said
“All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing“
All I can say is that my thoughts and prayers are with those courageous people in Iran and I hope that my worst fears for them are not realised.

God works in mysterious ways. As Joe Klein so snidely pointed out, Mr. Krauthammer does not have full physical movement. But God granted him one of the great intellects of our era. And it is a talent that does not go to waste.
On the other hand, Mr. Rivera has four fingers and a thumb.
And a foot often planted firmly in mouth.

THANK YOU! Watching the press cover this over the weekend is almost too much. “We don’t want to meddle” this, and “We don’t want to be a foil” that. The approach of the administration in this one event underlines the very faulty premise upon which own “change” rests. The idea that we have to walk the line drawn by a regime that guns down girls in the street is reprehensible!
Weight of Glory on June 21, 2009 at 10:19 PM
This is not an argument about Iran. It is an argument about what it is that we Americans stand for. We are a nation founded on freedom from tyranny, freedom from oppression. For us to not lend our voice of support to others who are trying to free themselves from tyranny does nothing more than disavow who we are.
Captain America on June 21, 2009 at 10:20 PM
You guys do realize that everyone who voted for Obama expects him to do the polar opposite of the last administration right?
Today, my wife said whatever you guys(the GOP)suggest or expect…he better do the opposite. lol

It seems pretty difficult for the mullahs to blame the deaths at the hands of the basij on American CIA, especially when the government policy is to jail people, to break up protests, to cancel memorial services, to restrict internet and blogging capability, etc.

How does calling for diplomacy and support for the reformist movement — refusing to talk with Khameini who obviously won’t negotiate on nukes (per Dinnerjacket) and can’t be taken at his word, anyway? Seriously, you guys are overthinking this, yet not thinking about it at all.

Unfortunately, at this point, I have little respect for McCain. He proved shallower and less gallant than I ever imagined he was. His reaction to Plain’s popularity and his unwillingness to defend her and her family and a forceful, indignant manner won’t ever be forgotten and I am not even a big Plain supporter.
TheBigOldDog on June 21, 2009 at 10:54 PM
I like Krauthammer. He’s proven brilliant before…but I couldn’t take more then about 45 seconds of this clip because of Guhraldo (hard G GUH! as in guttersnipe, which I think, in my humble opinion, he is) I can’t stand his voice and I can’t stand him and his “I know more then you” attitude. He and Bob Beckel just turn my stomach!

Guttersnipe! Now there’s a word I haven’t heard in a while.
What I love about Mr. Krauthammer is his clarity. You can tell he’s brilliant, but he manages to explain things so succinctly and clearly. Put him in front of Congress before each vote, I say!
Rosmerta on June 21, 2009 at 11:04 PM
This argument that the liberals are offering – that the US has to be careful not to be seen encouraging people protesting against an insane, tyrannical government – has got to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard in my life. I am still amazed that anyone would say this with a straight face. The natural extension of this sort of “thinking” would be that the US could never make any negative statements about any government, at all, lest the people decide to protest against that government and the US be “blamed” and, therefore, lend legitimacy to that government’s brutal crackdown on the protesters. Never, in the entire history of the US, would this sort of idea be accepted by anyone with a brain. This is beyond Orwellian nonsense, in that there is not even any attempt to make sense by twisting words. This is flat-out stupidity and idiocy.
But, this is the sort of reasoning that one can expect from a bunch of morons who voted for B Hussein, whose whole idea from the beginning was that sitting down at a table and negotiating with madmen and America-haters (his sorts of people) don’t lend any legitimacy to them.
I have long been disgusted with the left, as they are a bunch of despicable, lying, America-hating scum, but now they have gone so far past that. They have waded neck-deep into the waters of insanity and asininity in an attempt to make excuses for the affirmative action retard they have put in as their leader. It is just unbelievable that humans could sink this low.
So, where has the left and their idiot messiah now taken the discussion?
1) The US saying anything negative about any group gives that group legitimacy to kill and maim and do anything they want, blaming the US for prompting the side they are killing.
2) Sitting down at a table for official negotiations with a group of the above sort doesn’t give them any legitimacy.
So, to the leftist, talking about someone gives legitimacy to the opposite of what we’re saying, but negotiating with that same person doesn’t give them any legitimacy even though we would be acting in coordination with them and recognizing their legitimacy, ourselves.
This is the world of the liberal. Cognitive dissonance to the very core. Only the most insane among us could espouse such contradictory idiocy … which describes all one really needs to know about the left.
progressoverpeace on June 21, 2009 at 11:05 PM
I keep hearing libtards talking about the Rethuglican neocon conspiracy with the Zionazis to bomb Iran and steal their oil and remap the ME.
Iraq succeeded so the domestic savages have turned their sights on Iran. Stay tuned for massive demonstrations in the streets by enraged leftist trash as they take the side of the Iranian mullahs and portray the U.S. and Israel as they usually do.

Credit where it’s due, McCain is a great Senator and a great voice when it comes to foreign policy. He has been right on the N.Korea issue as well.
I’m reminded about McCain’s finest moment (in my opinion) of last year’s campaign. When asked by Pastor Warren what should be done about evil in the world, McCain said “Defeat it.” Great answer, and he backed that up with a strong stance in the Georgia situation.
What more can be said about Krauthammer? He should have his own hour long show with no guests, and no visual aids, just him talking sense, like we are all adults.

Give Geraldo this much: at least he loves America. He proved that to me in Iraq, twice.
