Neda identified? Update: New details

Word on the street via one Iranian tweeter is that her name was Neda Agha Soltan. That’s also the name circulating on a few websites and now being attributed to her in a hastily arranged Wikipedia bio. The rumor — and it’s all rumor until some newspaper tracks down her family — is that she was 27 years old and a philosophy student. I hope to god this isn’t really her photo because the thought of her being so beautiful and dignified makes the murder somehow that much more obscene.
Two clips below. The second you’ve already seen; the first is a new one circulating today, shot sometime before the moment of truth. The blue shirt on the gray-haired man in the foreground should look familiar. That’s almost certainly her standing to his left, watching the protest, bothering no one. Read this Time piece on Neda by Iran expert Robin Wright afterwards, as it touches on the huge significance of martyrdom not only in Shiite theology but in Iran’s political tradition. If there’s any justice, there’ll be videos like this of Khamenei and Ahmadinejad someday soon.
Update: A Farsi speaker tells HuffPo that this blogger is claiming that Neda was at the protest with her professor and several other students and that the fatal shot was fired by a Basij driving by on a motorcycle. No rhyme or reason; I wonder if he even aimed. The burial, reportedly, was today — and her memorial service was ordered canceled by the regime.

Not for long from Wiki site

In 1979 my dad let me buy a t-shirt that sad ‘F%@k Iran’ as long as I didn’t wear it out of the house. I wish I still had that t-shirt (and could fit into it).
This cold-blooded murder cannot stand, nor should Barry’s insistence on unconditional dialogue with the worst of the world’s worst survive this atrocity.

That girl is someone, even if it is not Neda Agha Soltan. It is very disturbing and sad. The photos imply death, but I hope that is not the case.

Then I said:
So,was the shooting, and death of the young Iranian girl
that spark?———-June 20,2009 at 8:29PM.

As in all world events,I had a gut feeling that if something
like the murder of a young child,it becomes more than a bitt
erly contested election, but more of symbol of the Mullahs
iron fist towards its own people!
Neda has become,in my opinion, the Symbol of the Iranian
Struggle of FGreedom!!

Way too many of the Iranians living it the U.S. being asked to comment on the situation have said that Pres. Obama is handling it perfect. I am hoping they are just sucking up to him because his party is in charge and will ultimately help them.
Cindy Munford on June 21, 2009 at 7:28 PM
We have to keep Neda Agha Soltan’s memory alive because God knows the corrupted media in the US will ignore her like they did so many others. NOT THIS TIME.

I personally found this comment appalling. If she weighed 400-lbs and was ugly then, presumably, her murder “somehow” would be that much less obscene?
Grow Fins on June 21, 2009 at 7:31 PM
Maybe it would have been better if Barry had groveled in Tehran rather than Cairo. Could have made a difference. You never know. Barry has a gift you know. A frozen snack shared at the local JihadyCream with Ahmadinejad may have prevented all of this unpleasentness. I guess we will never know.
JonRoss on June 21, 2009 at 7:32 PM
Neda was killed in that incident
The 40-second YouTube video carries with it an equally disturbing description:

I’m left practically speechless. Would President Obama be so disengaged if it were Sasha or Malia who had been gunned down in cold blood by ruthless military (read government) goons? Now you know why we cling to our guns and religion. Too bad the unarmed citizens of Iran don’t have the same privilege.

The girl is dead and it is her death that is obscene. What makes it more obscene is that she would have been mistreated her whole life simply because she was beautiful and a woman in such a totalistarian soceity.

What’s eating me in all this, especially after seeing the video of Neda being killed in cold blood, is the idea that the government of Iran is still being considered by this administration as a faithful “partner” for peace, thereby preventing us from taking a hard stand against the regime out of fear of being a “foil“ for the protestors, and making diplomacy difficult after this all shakes out. Underlying all this is the intrinsic legitimacy that Obama’s administration assumes exists within the Iranian government, which is simply irrational. When I think that…it infuriates me to no end.

Why not? It’s not uncommon for people to become more emotional over the murder of someone young because of the sense of a lost future. And those who are young also identify more closely with those of the same age.
Blake on June 21, 2009 at 7:58 PM
Hardly. There’s a lot of faux gnashing of teeth and rending of garments going on over the death of this (beautiful) woman here, most of which I call BS on. Because this all comes from the same people who couldn’t care less if innocent people die (beautiful or otherwise) in other less poiltically convenient circumstances.
It’s called hypocrisy. Look it up in the dictionary.
At least BL@KBIRD is consistent in his perpetual Muslim-hatred.
