The Nation: Obama’s “tepid” response on Iran “disappointing”

posted at 1:36 pm on June 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Most of the criticism over Barack Obama’s lack of support for Iranians demanding political freedom and true self-determination has come from conservatives, leading some on the Left to jeer at the Right.  That may be changing, though, as Obama continues to cling to the mullahs over the grassroots speaking some Truth to Power.  John Nichols at The Nation, hardly a bastion of conservative thought, scolds Obama for his “disappointing” and “tepid” response to the Iranian crisis:

President Obama’s tepid response to the evidence the Iranian election was stolen from the people of that country by current president President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his thuggish allies is disappointing. …

The president says he entertains “deep concerns about the election” in Iran. Well, who doesn’t? Expressing concern is “nice,” it’s “diplomatic”–in the worst sense–but it is not sufficient to the circumstance, as Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are reportedly arguing within the White House. …

By every measure, the US president’s response has been less than that of other world leaders, especially French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has branded the announced election “result” a fraud and bluntly decried the government’s clampdown on dissent “brutal,” “totally disproportionate” and “extremely alarming.”

Obama’s apologists say that any expression of support for the US would undermine the protestors’ credibility.  With whom?  The mullahs?  They already believe the protestors to be illegitimate, and they’re already blaming the US for the crisis.  The mullahs have lost credibility with the people of Iran, which is the real credibility crisis — and Obama will lose credibility with the Iranian people if he continues to worry more about Ali Khamenei and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than about the people demanding freedom.

Nichols points out that Obama has positioned himself successfully as the Not-Bush, especially internationally.  That gives him greater credibility on the world stage to defend freedom, not less.  Yet Obama has made himself and the US appear timid and frightened of Khamenei instead of using his bully pulpit and restored prestige to argue for liberty and support those demonstrating peacefully for it.  Nichols doesn’t come out and say it explicitly, but George Bush would not have limited himself to expressing “deep concerns about the election,” and everyone knows it.

The Nation has discovered what we on the Right have argued for the last two years: Barack Obama would put America into retreat on the world stage, at the expense of freedom and to the benefit of dictators and kleptocrats around the world.  This is just the latest example, and there will be more to come.

Why is the focus on peaceful protesting? As long as the protests remain peaceful, they will not get what they are demanding. What the protesters want cannot be achieved peacefully because the dictators in charge want to stay in charge and have the weapons to do so. Unfortunately, people must die to achieve freedom in Iran. The sooner the better, it is better to strike while the iron is hot.

Maybe when some of their other “writers” and “editors” write the same words, it is a possibility.

But folks at the Nation like Katha Pollitt, Hurricane Katrina, and Eric Alterman will never do so, as they have their tongues so far up O’bama’s getalife they can taste manure.

Obama lies to himself even more than to others. His end will come when his fragile personality, built on a lie, collapses. My prediction is that we will all see it publicly. The collapse of a false messiah is a scene to behold. Reminds me of the famous jewish messiah pretender, Sabbatai Zevi. Nearly as famous as Obama in his time, he ended up a prisoner of the Ottoman sultan, and converted to Islam. Ultimately, the sultan exiled him, and he nearly disappeared from history. Where will Obama’s St. Helena be?

JiangxiDad on June 19, 2009 at 2:48 PM

He doesn’t object because he is in complete agreement on what happened and he would love to be able to do that here. This is our future if he manages to get reelected. Shut up I won and I win for the next 60 years.

Obama has too much in common with the loonies in Iran to raise a fuss. Israel, the US military, the security of the US and Islam getting a good representation are all common goals that I’m sure are worth more than a few thousand human lives American or Iranian.

Not like as if they were pirates.

I mean Russia and China and the other despots already knew what they were getting with Barry, and were licking their chops. Barry thought he could hang with those guys, and they’d take him into their club, since he’s an America-hater too. Turns out, now they’re giving him grief, and he’s scratching his head wondering why he’s being played.

Ironically, the Iran protests are one area where the right and left happen to be in agreement. The BBC and British newspapers are providing excellent coverage of the Iran debate, and the BBC Persian service has apparently been annoying Khameni enough to promote Britian to the new Great Satan. Ditto with the Huffington Post (if you can get past the Barry shilling and trying to justify his actions). I think that this is one cause that all Americans (except apparently Obama the Wimpy) can get behind. Hopefully, this will “nuance” the left’s position on dialogue with Iran. Perhaps the Nation and other principled lefties aren’t going to be willing to back Obama’s talks with Dinner Jacket after Dinner Jacket starts shooting unarmed college students in the street.

Little help for the Prez’s teleprompter:

*** Ahem…. In the nineteen-seventies, the United States supported a brutal dictator in Iran. The people of Iran would not tolerate this, and they took their country back. Now they have come full circle, and those who fought to free Iran now fight to repress her.

So help me God, the United States will not make the same mistake twice. We support the people of Iran without equivocation in their struggle to throw off the yoke of tyranny. This is not a time for men and women of principle to bicker back and forth about the finer points of diplomacy and protocal. It is a time for all lovers of freedom and truth to stand and be counted.

I raise my open hand, both as a gesture of friendship and as a symbol of solidarity with their cause of democratic self-rule. May God speed them.”

All this Democracy nonsense is yet another gadfly that threatens to diminish Dear Leader’s aura of infinite wisdom among the Proletariat.

I wonder if Barry by saying nothing has accidently done the right thing. Look, Barry is a joke and he proably didn’t say anything for the wrong reason ie he is scared of offending his buddies the mullahs. My instincts tell me that if the USA was too vigorious in it’s support of the Thug canditate who lost in Iran the Mullahs, Barry’s buddies, would have thrown out the chimp man and installed the other thug. Now they can tell Barry, we gave you what wanted, lets deal. Of course the whole time they are dealing Iran is making nukes. Either way the Mullahs, Barry’s buddies, win.

So if either way the Mullahs, Barry’s buddies win, he should have been more aggresive. Right?

The House overwhelmingly approved a resolution Friday in support of Iranian dissidents as that country’s top cleric warned protesters to end demonstrations.

The resolution was approved in a 405-1 vote, with two members voting present. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) was the only lawmaker opposed to the resolution. Reps. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) and David Loebsack (D-Iowa) voted present.

Ron Paul’s vote against it I understand; Ellison, well he’s a muslim; but David Loebsack? (the representative I’m stuck with) Where is your head Dave?

Its more than a little coincidence that the boyking can stir up the country of Iran with his speech from heaven he made in Cairo. then when the masses are fired up, run like a scalded chichenshit dog. Which way is it boyking? Are you a man or a mouse? No points for fly swatting or media ass-kissing or lying with your forked tongue.

See, I don’t think that is an apt comparison. Mousavi is not Lech Walesa, he’s more like Che Guevara. He is just as evil as the Ayatollah or Ahmadinejad. I don’t for one minute believe he cares about democracy or freedom. He only wants the power he had as prime minister and will use these protestors to get it.

Yet Obama has made himself and the US appear timid and frightened of Khamenei instead of using his bully pulpit

Sorry to that this, but you are completely out of touch. Do you live in an area with an Iranian community? I do and can tell you that you couldn’t be more wrong.

No one in the Middle East thinks that Obama is afraid of Khameni. What they do think, esp. after the Cairo speech, is that Obama is neither evil nor their enemy. In the past, Iran’s theocracy could blame any civil unrest on the US President, and a significant part of the population would actually fall for that type of nationalistic rhetoric. But Obama changes that equation. Iranians simply do not find that argument credible.

If Obama had started early on railing against the Iranian leadership and expressed support for the opposition, it would have been a dream come true for the mullahs. His words would have been constantly broadcast on Iranian tv as proof that the opposition was merely a prop of the American government.

It’s amazing that some people are unable to comprehend this reality. Maybe it’s because you’re someone where in the midwest with little exposure to people from other cultures, but it’s really surprising.
