The Nation: Obama’s “tepid” response on Iran “disappointing”

posted at 1:36 pm on June 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Most of the criticism over Barack Obama’s lack of support for Iranians demanding political freedom and true self-determination has come from conservatives, leading some on the Left to jeer at the Right.  That may be changing, though, as Obama continues to cling to the mullahs over the grassroots speaking some Truth to Power.  John Nichols at The Nation, hardly a bastion of conservative thought, scolds Obama for his “disappointing” and “tepid” response to the Iranian crisis:

President Obama’s tepid response to the evidence the Iranian election was stolen from the people of that country by current president President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his thuggish allies is disappointing. …

The president says he entertains “deep concerns about the election” in Iran. Well, who doesn’t? Expressing concern is “nice,” it’s “diplomatic”–in the worst sense–but it is not sufficient to the circumstance, as Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are reportedly arguing within the White House. …

By every measure, the US president’s response has been less than that of other world leaders, especially French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who has branded the announced election “result” a fraud and bluntly decried the government’s clampdown on dissent “brutal,” “totally disproportionate” and “extremely alarming.”

Obama’s apologists say that any expression of support for the US would undermine the protestors’ credibility.  With whom?  The mullahs?  They already believe the protestors to be illegitimate, and they’re already blaming the US for the crisis.  The mullahs have lost credibility with the people of Iran, which is the real credibility crisis — and Obama will lose credibility with the Iranian people if he continues to worry more about Ali Khamenei and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than about the people demanding freedom.

Nichols points out that Obama has positioned himself successfully as the Not-Bush, especially internationally.  That gives him greater credibility on the world stage to defend freedom, not less.  Yet Obama has made himself and the US appear timid and frightened of Khamenei instead of using his bully pulpit and restored prestige to argue for liberty and support those demonstrating peacefully for it.  Nichols doesn’t come out and say it explicitly, but George Bush would not have limited himself to expressing “deep concerns about the election,” and everyone knows it.

The Nation has discovered what we on the Right have argued for the last two years: Barack Obama would put America into retreat on the world stage, at the expense of freedom and to the benefit of dictators and kleptocrats around the world.  This is just the latest example, and there will be more to come.

I am sure Obama is running some focus groups and seeing how to “spin” the whole situation so he looks like a genius. Remember Obama’s response to Russia invading Georgia? Remember Obama’s response to the financial meltdown? “Call me if you need me.” – Well Mr. President we don’t need you, nor do we want you to de-rail a real chance to bring Iran down. I think it is best if you take Michelle & the kids to Hawaii to celebrate the 4th of July with North Korean fireworks.

JiangxiDad on June 19, 2009 at 1:49 PM

No, he is not scared, he is not unsure of what to do. What we are seeing here is his view of what America should be. Ordinary. Mediocre. Not reliable. Just sort of bumbling around in the background, like your nutty Uncle Sam Jake. This all part of the plan to bury American exceptionalism. We need to come in 3rd place behind France, and Germany, and the more often the better. When the day comes that freedom is in danger somewhere, people will not wonder, “Where is the United States of America? Surely they will be coming to our rescue soon.” That will be fine day, according to BHO. A few of the old ones may mutter something about it having been different once, but in Obama’s ideal view of the world, the one they will be looking to will be the UN, not the US. And he is putting that into practice right now.

From the comments, Nichols doesn’t isn’t persuading the typical Nation reader:

I do not accept the notion of a stolen Iranian election. It was certainly a badly managed interference with a referendum, whose most favorable outcome, from our point of view, would have been a change in tone, and from the urban Iranian’s point of view, a relaxation of social restrictions.

It does not, in any way, rise to the level of the Supreme Court’s 2000 interference with our presidential election, or the crooked dealings in Florida in that year and Ohio in 2004.

How Great To See a State Threatened
Posted by Lew Rockwell on June 17, 2009 08:29 AM | Post a civil, substantive, and intelligent comment
The last US-installed regime in Iran, the Shah’s, crumbled when the Persian people withdrew their consent. It didn’t matter that he had US weaponry and a vast US-trained military and secret police. It all blew away like leaves in the wind, without violence, when the people stopped obeying him. Is this happening again in Iran? We can only hope, and that the result will be a less oppressive regime that is still independent, and not another province in the US empire, let alone part of its occupied territories. And by the way, Americans could copy the Iranians. The gang of thieves called the US government exists only because we obey it and salaam it. It too can blow away like leaves in the wind, non-violently, if we withdraw our consent: read Rothbard.

As Krauthammer explained the brewing revolution in Iran: “They want to bring down the tyrannical, misogynist, corrupt theocracy that has imposed itself with the very baton-wielding goons that today attack the demonstrators.”

When has Barack Obama ever objected to tyranny, misogyny or corruption? He couldn’t even walk away from Jeremiah Wright ‘s church. Now we see elections have consequences. This could have been an opportunity for Middle Eastern peace.

As Krauthammer wrote, this week has seen the opportunity to strike a crushing blow against Islamofascism, to cripple the largest state sponsor of terrorism, to eliminate the concerns about a nuclear-armed Iran…and all without firing a shot. And what has our president done about this opportunity? Absolutely nothing. When we are attacked again Obama will be responsible, he will own the death and devastation. He had the chance to slow terrorism in its tracks, and he sat idly by.

Meanwhile on the other side of the world, an insane dictator is testing nuclear weapons and lobbing missiles all over the Pacific and threatening to send one in the direction of the US homeland in the next couple of weeks. Once again, what is the president doing about it? You guessed it…absolutely nothing. When North Korea attacks South Korea or Japan, or God forbid, the US, Obama will own that too.

The single greatest role the president is responsible for is the defense and protection of the United States…and he just doesn’t give a damn. Sickening!

Silence Isn’t Golden

Since a wave of protests broke out in Iran last weekend following its presidential election, the American media has promoted the Obama administration’s view that it could do more to help demonstrators by staying on the sidelines than actively offering rhetorical support.

The theory is that if President Obama publicly encourages those taking to the streets in Iran, it will only backfire by allowing the Islamic regime to paint protesters as tools of America. As Obama himself put it, “sometimes the United States can be a handy political football…”

But Amir Fakhravar says this approach is dead wrong. And he speaks with authority. Jailed and tortured in Iran for advocating democracy and speaking out against the Iranian government, Fakhravar in 2006 fled for the U.S., where he currently lives in exile while maintaining close ties to the reform movement in Iran.

Contrary to most reports in the American press, he said the demonstrators he is in contact with in Iran are desperate for Obama to make a forceful statement reassuring them that he stands with those who are striving for freedom.

“Right now, the people in Iran are disappointed,” he said in a telephone interview with TAS.

The Obama administration’s decision to engage the Islamic regime, Fakhravar said, has been worrisome to his friends in Iran. After Obama released a message in March for Nowruz, the Persian New Year, in which he addressed the “leaders of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” a friend called him from Iran, crying that the American president would want to talk to the dictatorship.

“’What does that mean?’” he remembers his friend saying. “’We’re going to be alone. They’re going to kill us.’”

He said he’s hearing similar things from Iranians he has been speaking with throughout the week, who are stunned by Obama’s muted response in the wake of the election.

“What’s wrong?” Iranians ask him. “What’s going on with the U.S. government? Why aren’t they going to help us?”

What’s especially troubling, he said, is that Obama’s reaction has added fuel to a rumor traveling around Iran that Obama is in secret talks with the Iranian government. “They think he is trying to help the Mullahs stay in power,” he said.

To combat this view, Fakhravar suggested Obama speak up.

“Right now, (Obama) could say, ‘America stands for freedom and democracy, and as a United States president, I want to stand behind all of the freedom fighters in the world that are fighting peacefully to have democracy and freedom,’” Fakhravar said. “That’s the American Dream. I don’t know why he didn’t say that. He said, ‘this is none of our business.’

Fakhravar dismissed the view that such a statement would be exploited by the Iranian regime to discredit the protesters. He noted that even with Obama’s tepid reaction, the official Iranian news sources are reporting that America is behind the protests.

“Whether Obama says anything or not, Iran is still going to play that game,” he said.

Expressing concern is “nice,” it’s “diplomatic”–in the worst sense–but it is not sufficient to the circumstance, as Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are reportedly arguing within the White House.

Pretty damned scary when Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden are the agents for action on an international issue.

Reading through the threads it dawned on me that Kim Jung Il and the situation in Iran have derailed the filthy liar’s plan to spend the next few weeks exclusively campaigning for socialized healthcare. There are two situations out there that require action and the president can no longer relegate foreign affairs to photo-ops with world leaders as they come to the White House to bow down and kiss the imperial ring.

Instead of launching anecdotal stories about the elderly eating dog food, Obama will have to get with the “serious people” and develop courses of action and make measured statements. This is precisely the part of the job he hates.

The problem is that it doesn’t matter how he feels and never did. The American people don’t give a damn about his feelings though the narcisstic bastard thinks that is all they care about (count the number of “I” statements in one of his speeches). What the American people want and deserve is that the nation’s leadership will work in the best interests of the American people and take action when necessary. This crisis in Iran has been going on for a week and Obama has really blown it by his indecision.

“The Nation” is getting “deeply troubled” by Obama’s support for the mullahs’ “robust debate” tactics against unarmed Iranian civilians.

Loxodonta on June 19, 2009 at 2:24 PM

His reaction is a perfect reminder of his worldview. He reflexively thinks the worst of the U.S., so he assumes that anything that comes from the White House will be viewed as opportunistic propaganda and therefore counterproductive.

It will, but only because of the current occupant of that office.

I suggest a few alterations:

It is really coming down to only two three basic possibilities.

1) Obama is incompetent.

2) He actually, being an aspiring one himself, sides with the dictators and says just enough in tepid support of the Iranian people to try to cover his arse.

Well, maybe also

3) Both of the above. Obama supports those who want to wipe Israel off the map.

MB4 on June 19, 2009 at 2:24 PM

And also

4) All of the above.

Loxodonta on June 19, 2009 at 2:28 PM

Obama is so Chamberlain like that the tyrants followers in Iran now chant “Death to England!”. At the rate Obama is going it might be “Death to Lichtenstein!” before it is again “Death to America!”.

MB4 on June 19, 2009 at 2:29 PM

Disappointing, perhaps, but hardly surprising.

Sure would be nice if the USA played France to Iran’s Colonial Revolution.

The Nation has discovered what we on the Right have argued for the last two years: Barack Obama would put America into retreat on the world stage, at the expense of freedom and to the benefit of dictators and kleptocrats around the world. This is just the latest example, and there will be more to come.

While I agree more in our nation are starting to see Obambi for what most of us knew he was from the beginning (an empty suit weak on experience and leadership) I wouldn’t say the nation has discovered this fact as there are still many Obamabots that have drunk so deeply from the fool-aid they will never see the light even if that light is a train headed straight for them while they’re stuck on the Obama is THE ONE rail however there are more and more people finally waking up with buyers remorse, albiet too late!

Also, his holiness THE ONE is not only placing the mad-mullahs above freedom he’s also placing them above the safety and security of our republic, something I kept attempting to get across to the fence-sitters prior to the election but to no avail and now we will all pay the price.

Liberty or Death on June 19, 2009 at 2:33 PM

Obambi’s money is on the mullahs. This silence is a pragmatic reaction to the crisis. Remember, it is his pure charisma (not to mention smart power) that will cause the leadership of Iran to abandon its nukes. Obama is poised to “out-psych” the mullahs. It’s gonna happen. Oh yeah! Smart power baby! Oh, yes and remember Michelle’s arms! (0h..wait… the mullahs wouldn’t appreciate her arms. Might cause them to start lusting or something.)

Seriously – what is so very sad is that Germany (who does more business with Iran than any other country) and France have taken a stand while Obambi refuses. He has out-wimped the euro-wimps! Congrats! Another new low for American foreign policy courtesy of the democrats.

Instead of launching anecdotal stories about the elderly eating dog food, Obama will have to get with the “serious people” and develop courses of action and make measured statements. This is precisely the part of the job he hates.

highhopes on June 19, 2009 at 2:20 PM

Yep. He hates it because he can’t control all the actors, they know it, and he knows they know it. If support on national health care and CAP continues to soften, his overall policy approval numbers continue to decline, and a few more Walpin type issues erupt, he’s going to lose some of his coolness factor. Then, if Putin makes a land grab move and Bibi ignores Hillary on Palestine, we may see the mother of all melt downs.

Obama is NOT a wimp. Look at how he defeated that fly. What courage. No wonder he feels so proud doing it.
