Sotomayor: My women-only club isn’t discriminatory but I’m quitting it anyway

Makes sense. Who among us hasn’t distanced themselves from something they personally have no problem with?
Sotomayor said she resigned from the Belizean Grove to prevent the issue from becoming a distraction in her confirmation hearings.
In a letter to Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the federal appeals court judge said she is convinced that the club does not practice “invidious discrimination” and that her membership in it did not violate judicial ethics.
But she said she didn’t want questions about it to “distract anyone from my qualifications and record.”
Federal judges are bound by a code that says they shouldn’t join any organization that discriminates by race, sex, religion or nationality.
I get that the uproar over this is a reprisal for the left wetting itself over Alito belonging to a men-only club, but isn’t this kind of … stupid? The hallmark of true discrimination is the shared sentiment that those who don’t belong to the empowered group are somehow inferior. Is that really what’s going on with (most) clubs that are restrictive by gender? It’s not a superiority/inferiority thing, it’s a gender-differences-are-relevant-to-comfort-levels thing. And before anyone yells at me, bear in mind that even our Equal Protection jurisprudence observes that distinction: Racially discriminatory laws are analyzed with “strict scrutiny, meaning that they’re (almost) always unconstitutional, whereas laws that discriminate by gender are analyzed with “intermediate scrutiny,” meaning they need to have a good reason to discriminate for a court to uphold them. Aside from the Alito “quid pro quo” aspect of this, does anyone really have a problem with Sotomayor belonging to this dopey elitist group?

I guess that means the DAR is evil on two counts.
The point is that it’s an ethics code. If the “discrimination” isn’t due to bigotry but, rather, due simply to the whole point of the club, I don’t have any problem with it.

How can any male expect justice from a woman who thinks herself superior to men?
It’s bad enough in divorce law that some young men pass on marriage. What would a member of an Elite-Super-Biotch-Club member do to males once she is on the SCOTUS?

AP,
Heh I read that with a Bill O’Reilly voice and it sounded exactly like him in my head :)
But to your earlier assertion:
I agree. I was a member of a cigar club that was only men and we wouldn’t allow women to be in the club because we were telling stories and someitmes using locker room language and humor. We didn’t want to have to watch our mouth because women were around. It was a catharsis of sorts because we could be men doing manly things. Eventually women were allowed to join, and it was fine at first, but then it happened where someone got offended and ruined the whole thing for me and a few others so we quit.
I hear they are a garden club now though; which is nice.
alohapundit on June 19, 2009 at 11:14 PM
Phony wise Latina.
nor on June 19, 2009 at 11:21 PM
That sounds pretty stupid. This would mean that a federal judge can’t be a member of any organization that has separate bathrooms or locker rooms (as we have seen with some of the incredibly stupid rulings concerning locker rooms, bathrooms and “gender identity”). There would also seem to be problems with any religion (which must, by definition, almost, discriminate agains those outside). It would also lead to the sort of moronic rulings that yield our open border policies and the “illegality” or “immorality” of naitonal citizenship.
This country is being swallowed by abject stupidity and hyper-sensitivity. Unreal. What the heck ever happened to the right of association?
It is beyond stupid.
This is stupid, too. The inferior/superior idea has nothing to do with discrimination. That is the left’s idiotic way of trying to keep it so that only whites can be discriminatory.
It doesn’t matter if anyone or any group considers themselves superior. This whole problem with some group thinking themselves superior is beyond idiotic. Every religion believes that it is correct and everyone else is incorrect. That part of the point of it, and there is nothing wrong with this. There is something wrong with anyone who demands that all groups must be considered equal and there’s something really wrong with someone who thinks all groups are equal.
People have really confused the idea of “equal under the law” with “equal in any and all respects”. It’s pathetic and silly.
Equal Protection is the most abused and misunderstood area of law we have. It is a mockery of law, in the ways our courts have let it be abused, and intellectually offensive.
This is due to selective interpretation and reactions to hyper-sensitivity. The fact that affirmative action and minority set-asides are clearly racially discriminatory laws (or set of laws) proves this. The existence of the COngressional Black Caucus shows that these “interpretations” are merely one dimensional and without any actual meaning other than “whitey is always bad”.
Same thing with males. Women are always allowed to enter male leagues, but males are never allowed to enter female leagues. There is no “law” behind this, just stupidity and the need to exact “social justice” in the most twisted and moronic way.
Not at all. I have a problem with affirmative action and officially sanctioned laws that discriminate in favor of inferiority, just to “even things out”. I have no problems with any private orgs that do whatever they want, as freedom of association is a fundamental freedom which we have all had stripped from us in order to make some feel better about themselves.
progressoverpeace on June 20, 2009 at 1:17 AM
The problem is that not only did she join this club, but she also joined La Raza. Along the way she made multiple speeches which clarified why she likes joining said clubs. She also made legal decisions which reflected aspects of these clubs, her public speaking, and her writings.
It all melds together AP and forms a picture of a Lantina who has a lot of empathy for select ethnic groups, select financial groups, select political groups, select sex groups, and to some degree select national groups. Justice is not blind in her case. Quite frankly, I am not so sure she likes America as a whole. Most people who love, or like America are all about wanting to function as one, and this woman seems to be like Obama, and is all about herself.

Has anyone heard Sotomayor speak? She has an exceptionally offensive voice. When I heard her, I dropped something and looked at whoever it was speaking (on the T.V.), was horrified to see that it was Sotomayor with this hideous voice. I can’t find one quality about her that makes her Supreme Court worthy and that voice, well, I’d leave any room in which she was speaking.
Lourdes on June 20, 2009 at 2:55 AM
She calls herself Hispanic. I call her chameleon
entagor on June 20, 2009 at 2:58 AM
Yeah, most definitely. Yet, she’s still there with La Raza, guiding or board member or whatever the title is (though any membership in my view would be extremely offensive).
I’ve asked several Senators and a few Congressmen why the U.S. taxpayers are funding groups such as La Raza (specifically, them) and they all fall silent. I’ve pointed out to each of them that La Raza is an ethnic-supremacy organization and they all remain silent. Utter silence.
The awful reality is that the government, OUR government, has no business being involved in any degree with ANY of these ethnic (and racial) supremacy organizations, to include the Black versions and the other Hispanic/Latino ones. I’ve asked Senators and Congressmen why it is they aren’t funding (and meeting with, being consulted by) the Aryan Nation and similiar, why it is they’re selecting out for these ethnic supremacy organizations and excluding the other ones (as I just mentioned).
Again, silence.
The point is, no one can explain why it is that these racial and ethnic supremacy organizations are funded by our government and worse, why they’re advisers or even given appointments in our public offices on any policy of any kind.
My preference would be that none of these groups was given any degree of time and resources by the public (taxpayer funded) and that includes a place in our government. Yet there they are, the Hispanic/Latino and Black racial and ethnic supremacy organizations, being paid to exercise their skewered, damaging, destructive perspectives. It’s truly a terrible misbehavior by our Congress that these groups are allowed to be involved, much moreso are funded by the taxpayers.

Guilty as charged.

StockOption on June 20, 2009 at 3:08 AM
That’s really well stated (and about which, I agree, completely).
Sotomayor has repeated her “wise Latina woman…(smarter) than a White male)” line verbatim (same quote, same statement) on numerous occasions before and with many other venues. It was not an isolated statement by Sotomayor at this one meeting of La Raza; she actually has repeated it, word for word, on numerous occasions.
All of which cements her as either an intellectual nincompoop or someone of serious deviations on a human and civilization level — it’s shocking that someone with even a decent education and who is entrusted to represent the Justice system would even make such a remark as she has even in joking, much moreso have repeated it in all seriousness on many occasions (indicates a fixed perspective that is highly intellectually irregular, also).
Obama’s nominated what appears to be “just anyone” to fulfill skin color and gender, which I believe is setting back standards of expectations and behavior by centuries.
Lourdes on June 20, 2009 at 3:09 AM
It’s like her statement about being “a wise Latina woman…”
“Latina” MEANS female of Latin DNA. Thus, even her ridiculous sexist and racist statement in puffing herself up was verbally, grammatically nonsensical (an oxymoron, in other words).
Lourdes on June 20, 2009 at 3:13 AM
The bigger problems as to Sotomayor and the Constitution (the U.S. one) is that she’s already displayed an intolerance of both the Second Amendment and right-to-life.

Your point is taken. I would question her during the nomination process. If indeed your bid to be confirmed is denied, will you reunite with this club of elitist again? Why not? I can not think of any past failed SC nominations for the Supreme Court that ever got a second shot at the prize. Will Sonya provide a wise answer? Will she feel the condescension and derision of this question being beyond the pale of a sitting Appellate Court Judge? If she feels in such a way then it could also be pejorative of the senators if they imply disapproval or contempt of her previous membership to this elitist group of women. The senate must discover how Sonya Sotomayor’s mind operated before she got the nod. We the people should not be denied placing only our best and brightest in such an exalted position that shall have consequence growing out of and sometimes complicating a problems, plans, or statements from this indiviual with the ramifications of a USSC. The people deserve a Supreme Court justice that will adhere to the U.S. Constitutional laws and not how you feel these laws should be interpreted or represented.
.
Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Only liberals get to discriminate and only moronic liberals believe lying moronic liberals when they might say “in a letter to Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the federal appeals court judge said she is convinced that the club does not practice “invidious discrimination” and that her membership in it did not violate judicial ethics.”
Liberals paint themselves into corners with their hypocrisy and have the nerve to whine when they’re called on it. Most conservatives don’t care if there are all men or all women clubs.
Liberals, i.e., NOW came up with that faux outrage back in the 70s. Then, minorities took their turn at the guilt trough for their social welfare from the guilty white man. Now, apparently only women and minorities are allowed to discriminate, and be discriminated against simultaneously. Their also allowed to lie through their judicial teeth without challenge.

OK, I think y’all are way off base here. First, in case you missed it, men and women are different. It’s a male-female species thing. Are we really getting to the point that if a man belongs to an all men’s golf club that he should be disqualified for public office? If women have a social or political club that discusses female issues, should they now be disqualified. How about someone that goes to a Christian church that only allows Christians to attend and participate? Should that person now be exculded from public office? Gheesh…I am not a supporter of Sotomayor for Justice, but, come’on, complaining about this is becoming like the progressives and libs.

Personally, I don’t give a rip who belongs to what club…sometimes men want to talk to other men, sometimes women want to talk to women, without the distraction or interruption of the opposite gender.
I’m not the most confident person in the world, but I certainly am not threatened by the thought that there is a male-only club out there that I can’t join simply because I’m a female.

With the mediocre quality of her qualifications and work, she should be happy to have the distraction.
