Oh my: Health care, amnesty, climate change bills all suddenly in trouble

posted at 7:17 pm on June 19, 2009 by Allahpundit

Imagine what the conservative grassroots reaction would be like if the GOP held the White House, both houses of Congress, and a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate and still couldn’t get its core domestic programs passed. You think you hate RINOs? Wait and see how the nutroots respond to Blue Dog Democrats if they end up scuttling universal health care when all the numbers are in the left’s favor. Especially when Drudge has an item up about talks on climate change between Democrats having blown up last night and Gibbs is telling the White House press corps that the votes still aren’t there on amnesty, notwithstanding the fact that the Democrats picked up seats last year in both chambers and The One promising a Hispanic group today that it’s coming.

Too much, too soon?

The White House’s “big bang” theory of proposing a raft of landmark legislation all at once is giving way to fears of a “big chaos” backlash. Congressional chairmen saying that the pipes are overloaded between health care and climate legislation — and that was before this week’s arrival of the biggest overhaul of financial regulations in 70 years.

And don’t forget Congress needs to fit in work on all of its annual spending bills and take a month off in August.

This mad rush of legislation is posing fiscal and tactical problems for Democrats.

They simply don’t have the money to change the health care system, overhaul the energy sector and increase domestic spending as part of the appropriations process — without imposing big tax increases or exploding the deficit. Something has to give. Even if they did, the gears of Congress move slowly. Any or all of these proposals could easily jam them up.

Ace spots a plum quote from health-care veteran Rep. Jim Cooper declaring health care on “life support,” too. And yet, and yet, with Obama’s popularity still high and a bunch of GOP retirements looming, it’s still as likely as not that the Dems will pick up more seats next year, which means killing these measures now is no guarantee that they’ll stay dead for long. If The One is smart, he’ll table health care for the moment and make some moves towards fiscal conservatism to reassure voters about spending, then return to it after the midterms. Sure would be nice, though, to have some Republican leadership capable of winning votes in the meantime instead of waiting around for the Democrats to lose them. Exit question: To what extent will nutroots-fueled primary challenges to Blue Dogs next year strengthen the GOP’s hand? If they lash out and try to sabotage moderate Democrats by dragging them left, it gives us a sweet opening in purple districts.

Uh, something already gave. Have you seen the deficit lately? And they’re already talking big tax increases. They’re just trying to buy time til after the midterms before imposing them.

Well said. The Dems blodly go into red states and poach our territories by removing our incumbents. The GOP is barely content with protecting tis turf. Dunno how it survives.

Concerning the Blue Dogs voting in Congress. I think the assumption is premature at this point as we don’t know what kind of ‘deals’ will be made behind closed doors. I’m thinking of the “offers you can’t refuse” nature.

We knew the Obama administration was going to overreach. With Rahm making statements about not letting a crisis go to waste and the left trying to ram everything through at supersonic speed, their intentions were obvious. They know they have an extremely limited amount of time to get things accomplished before the public wakes up from this Hopeandchange-induced stupor.

And if things don’t get done in 2009, they CERTAINLY won’t get done in 2010, when every representative and 33 senators have to face the voters.

Obama opponents and critics have played this well so far.

BardMan on June 19, 2009 at 7:26 PM

Maybe the left needs to stop running like moderates…no, wait, like Republicans. At the same time, if Republicans would merely start running like, um…republicans, we might be getting somewhere.

Guess what? This country IS center right.

Mommypundit on June 19, 2009 at 7:27 PM

Thank heavens America is broke. If it was cash flush, there would be no stopping the global warming legislation and the socialized medicine. Being in debt up to its ears is the only thing that might save the US from forever becoming a socialist state. Socialism requires, how ironic, massive amounts of capital, in order to sell it to westerners. Capital is savings. America has no savings. All it has is debt.

Let us bow our heads in thanks.

sherry on June 19, 2009 at 7:43 PM

we probably will defeat the climate bill, card check as well. Immigration reform is dead in the water, the health care though will be the real fight. If we can get through this year, and this year alone by blocking the public plan, we will have scored a significant victory, defensive in nature but not to be underestimated. In 2010 the midterms will be the priority, you may get another nonsensical stimulus, but that is nothing compared to destroying health care.

rob verdi on June 19, 2009 at 7:43 PM

The potential for multiple failures like this make Obama a very dangerous man. Everything in his life has been handed to him — quite possibly even his college degrees since we’ve never seen a transcript — so he will go very quickly to his hostile and authoritarian defensive position. Picture the most spoiled child you know being told he can’t have candy in the checkout line at the grocery store. Now imagine that this child has the complete powers of the federal government at his disposal to destroy anyone who gets in his way. This is going to get ugly. Very, very ugly. And no matter how abusive and scorched earth Obama gets, the MSM will portray him as a victim of partisan politics. Nothing is going to shut down Obama’s agenda. Nothing.

I think we aare a long way from turning this fiasco around but I also think Bama got hisself a crisis on his hands of being singularly unable to put any work where his mouth is.

Without crashing the bills through with a few authors and no scrutiny, the odds of failure go up dramatically. The more sunlight on this mess, the uglier it looks, just like Michelle.

to paraphrase the evil Soros, as he thought of other people, as I think of Bama I am having a pretty good “crisis” right now.

Someone who has never done anything but talk invariably ends up short when there is real work required.

The only scary part is what level of tantrum he and his acolytes throw…how far it overreaches.

“We won” don’t mean nothin’, little man, when it comes to looking people in the eye.

I believe that several months of 10% or higher unemployment, and inflation due to low confidence in US Bonds and higher fuel prices, may well result in major Republicans in both chambers of Congress. Throw in an international disaster or two, and we may retake the Senate.

Loxodonta on June 19, 2009 at 7:53 PM

Here’s a climate change question for you. Many of the studies predicting calamitous destruction and Biblical levels of chaotic weather are several years old.

How have the early years of those climate models held up? Has the reality matched the computer simulation? If not, why should we assume a model will get MORE accurate when predicting FURTHER into the future?

sadly, heh, true

The bail outs combined with the fake stimulus pouring money to support current state and local gov payrolls and run one jobs like sidewalk repair already broke the bank

This has blown the credibility of Treasury notes, which while still selling are starting to scare buyers

with normal borrowing tapped the Feds can print money, which they have been doing although they call it buying up their own securities, or seize money, which they call taxation

Meanwhile interest rates are being held down to nothing, a fix that kept Japan on ice for years. However, if they raise rates even one full point, folk all over the USA start going belly up from variable rate debt.

IMHO the only way to get out of this is to cut taxes hard and fast to pump business we have left and keep the taxpayer alive unstead of the local pols and their hereditary employees. Won’t happen

Natl health, green fantasies, and more benefits for illegals (which is the net result of amnesty) are impossible unless the fed sets up new printing presses for the money that will be needed to buy a loaf of bread

The clinker is the dead states like Calif who want the imaginary Natl health dollars to stay alive. Calif has been subsidizing its wealthy illusions for years with an underpaid illegal underclass that in turn has been subsidized with federal welfare. Everyone can have a Mexican gardener if the taxpayer in Michigan is paying his medical and food stamps
Termites have infused the system and are eating away the last beams holding the whole stinking mess together

I think we may get the full Depression because these sickos cannot stop

Dems to pick up more seats next time? haha
I would bet a lot against that proposition. My feeling is they will be thrashed big time.

You’re killing me Allah,

….with Obama’s popularity still high (and falling, will fall further) and a bunch of GOP retirements looming (Dems have problems here too), it’s still as likely as not that the Dems will pick up more seats next year(WRONG)…..

Two things: one is that the election is way more then a year away, light years in politics and second, read the post by James Pethokoukis from Ruters today. Obama gambled on the economy and lost. Never in the history of the world has an government ever had success with a trickle up economic model; in fact this is only theory and no data exists to show otherwise. Tax cuts or trickle down has already been proven to work in modern government policy – the Reagan model.

In a year from now we will still have 10% unemployment (European levels),GDP growth of 1% (European levels) and pissed off American’s who expect more. Its the economy stupid.

“My feeling is they will be thrashed big time.”

Thrashed? No. Probably not. Loose a filibuster proof majority? Hell yes.

The blue dogs are jumping ship for a reason, and Congressional/ Senate elections aren’t national, they’re local. And Obama ain’t on the ticket this time to pump the ancillary Democrat vote. These [D] jackasses have to go home and campaign to people that have lost jobs and long standing small businesses because of Obama’s economic policies. Many of those people will be formerly prosperous (under Bush) minorities. Any Democrat up for re-election in a southern or right to work state is gonna be screwed. Add the corruption angles and it gets even worse.

Dem’s will lose the house in 2010. Hopenchange is a debacle for them.

exceller on June 19, 2009 at 9:14 PM

Guys…. the problem with all this talk about who picks up more seat in 2010 is that the GOP brand is SHIT. And it will remain SHIT for awhile…. The Dem brand is going to be poo-poo too, and they wear this debt around their necks with shame…. but people aren’t just going to run back into the arms of the GOP. The GOP needs to clean house… run LOTS of rookie conservatives that have their hands clean. That’s the only way to gain more traction. I predict a low turnout in 2010 as the “moderate” voters return to apathy towards both parties….

I wonder if it’s time for a nation-wide Conservative party…. strict Conservative principles…. based on recent polls, we would have a plurality almost instantly.

I will say this, if Obama kills coal and doubles energy bills, he will not only be the first Democrat to win Indiana in 40 years…he might well be the last to win it ever.

So far all people have gotten out of all these promises is debt.

As for the midterms, I still think the Republicans might do pretty well. Even if there are Republicans coming up for retirement, that does not mean Democrats will always win those seats.
