Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on June 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We can’t let the week of Iranian unrest go without a mention of the clumsy way Barack Obama tried to take credit for the push for freedom by the people of Iran, who have spent 30 years gradually working to the point of going to the streets to demand their rights.  In a Rose Garden press conference, Obama not only took credit for a little Iranian Hope & Change, but also the Lebanese version, and characterized the Iranian election in a rather odd way:

Obama said he was “excited to see what appears to be a robust debate taking place in Iran.”

Pointing to the recent election of moderates in Lebanon’s parliamentary balloting, an optimistic Obama thinks there is room for change in Iran.

“And obviously, after the speech that I made in Cairo, we tried to send a clear message that we think there is the possibility of change. And ultimately, the election is for the Iranians to decide, but just as has been true in Lebanon, what can be true in Iran as well is that you’re seeing people looking at new possibilities,” Obama said.

“And whoever ends up winning the election in Iran, the fact that there’s been a robust debate hopefully will help advance our ability to engage them in new ways,” he added.

Lebanon freed itself from Syrian political and military domination long before Barack Obama started talking about change, and his Cairo speech had nothing to do with it.  The Lebanese elections actually represented a “robust debate,” being free and fair.  The Iranian elections were anything but; it consisted only of candidates approved by the ruling mullahs and had almost the same amount of diversity as a standard Soviet election.  The real “debate,” if one wants to call it that, took place after the mullahs botched their election-rigging.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

This isn’t some quirkly little mistake that reveals his inexperience. This is a cynical appropriation of “good” by an evil POS.

His mis-statements and on-the-fly diplomacy are very dangerous. What a shameful clown we have in the WH.

Obama said he was “excited to see what appears to be a robust debate taking place in Iran.”

Calling what is going on in Iran a “robust debate” is akin to characterizing WWII as a family squabble. This man is utterly unfit for the job he only got because of affirmative action.

highhopes on June 19, 2009 at 8:13 AM

Make Iran a LOSING issue for Barry, whatever happens there. His perfidy must be exposed. This freak should be King of France.

JiangxiDad on June 19, 2009 at 8:14 AM

And yet Dear Leader is staying mostly mum on the protests. He’d better be careful, or The One’s ego might cause a solar eclipse.

BTW, I heard that He’s also taking credit for the people power revolution in the Philippines in 1983.

doriangrey on June 19, 2009 at 8:10 AM

I’m firmly convinced that Obama has a narcissitic personality disorder. It has only gotten worse after the elections when he was the complete and total center of attention. It will also be ugly when he leaves office and has to find some way to remain relevant when people are not so interested in him anymore.

Taking credit for it?! heh:

http://www.redstate.com/moe_lane/2009/06/18/fiddling-as-tehran-burns/

Excerpted Krauthammer from the article:

“The shooting of eight demonstrators is not debate. The knocking of heads, bloodying of demonstrators by the Revolutionary Guards is not debate. The arbitrary arrest of journalists, political opposition, and students is not debate.”

“And to call it a debate and to use this neutral and denatured language is disgraceful.”

SURE…let him take credit for that….

I wonder if there will be elections in 2012, and if they are, if they aren’t shams similar to what we just saw in Iran. Obama has done more damage to our Republic in 6 months than has been done in 60 years, imagine 3.5 more years of this before his “Re-Coronation”?

It’s no accident the Porkulus allocates BILLIONS of dollars to ACORN. Imaging showing up at the polling place, having to walk by some armed black panther thugs uh “poll security guards” and wait forever behind the ACORN people trucking in the votes of the dead and non existent?

In a close election, fraud can win it or lose it.

Robust means rough and crude, which is actually a good descriptor for Obama’s “debating” style.

“Get in their face!”

He’s a thug, pure and simple. History will record that long after his failed term in office ends.

Yet he’s so popular!

I was thinking about that, how could that be, in the face of his repeated failures?

Then it hit me. It’s not inconceivable that election day will find President Obama with a 90% approval rating, and still get defeated in a historic landslide.

You see, people are afraid not to like him, but we’re pretty selfish here in America, and we don’t let even someone we say we like take away our stuff.

So I say: In 2012 watch for 90% approval yet 25% of the vote, landslide defeat. State-run media will stroke it’s chin in wonderment, but you and I will know what happened. Indeed, if you look closely, the opinion polls already reveal this pattern in early development, love the man but worried he’s unfit.

Losing support on healthcare was a big blow since the filthy liar in the White House has a big stake on pushing through socialized medicine. They appear shocked that the resistance is so strong and from within the rubber-stamp machine that is the Democrat-run Congress. He’s also seeing outrage over the massive spending, corporate takeovers by government, declining economy despite the massive spending, etc. If the GOP were to take over control of Congress in 2010, Obama would be a lame duck President for his last two years of office.

This is completely possible. The State Controlled Media is doing everything they can to fluff Obama as much as they can. Joseph Goebbels would be proud.

But you are wrong in what the reaction would be… If Obama still has 60% approval in 11/12 and loses in a landslide, the drumbeat will be that the right/conservatives/racist white people/and other usual demons STOLE the election! Remember when they tried to argue that about the Kerry landslide in the exit polls that wasn’t?

wildcat84 on June 19, 2009 at 9:26 AM

What an asshat thinking that it was his speech that triggered the happenings in Iran. The fact that I’m not surprised says a lot. When you’ve been declared God by the top media outlets (and have done nothing to distance yourself from such pathetic fawning and instead seem to thrive on it), you’ll tend to think that your words carry more weight than they actually do.

That’s why he’s pushing as hard and as fast as he can on it. I think that Obama probably would have waited until the economy started to recover to push more on this, the linchpin of his National Socialist remaking of America.

He may be an amateur, but he’s not stupid, he’s grabbing everything he can NOW because I think he sees the economy being WORSE, not better next year and so is going to try to go for broke before the 2010 elections in the hope of institutionalizing it before anything can be done to undo it.

I also disagree with the “conventional wisdom” (coming from the media) that this and other things Obama is implementing can’t be undone if he does get them passed. They sure as hell CAN be and WILL be if things keep getting worse and the vast majority want Obamism repealed…

Some things can be undone and some things never will be. For example, the changes to the financial services industry and the draconian control by government through new regulatory rules would be hard to undo but anything signed out by executive order could clearly be reversed.

Bottom line, all the hype about what the filthy liar was going to accomplish is quickly being exposed as a myth. The spin on the MSM has all been about what he has accomplished but the reality is that he just changed stuff, spent trillions more than we can afford with no positive effect on the economy. He is screwing up international affairs, has a clown for VP, and is better remembered for spending half a million dollars to take his wife out on a date than for the substance of his Cairo speech.

There will not be a fad to wear WWOB bracelets anytime soon.

Maybe just maybe even they can`t defend him on this.

Barak H. Obama is, fundamentally, a bold and robust _______.

He inherited his ability to appear as such a big _______.

Filling in the blanks will leave lots of room for a robust debate.

Ooh! Mad Libs!

Beaglemom on June 19, 2009 at 10:45 AM

I don’t know about y’all, but I’m impressed that a speech in 2009 influenced events in 2005. Like the Lebanon thing.
Who knew the One was a time traveller?

Things like that make my arse twitch. Kind of like when he said his uncle or whoever and the American military liberated Auschwitz. Which I’m sure came as a surprise to the Russians….

where are the trolls?

Akzed on June 19, 2009 at 10:32 AM

And where are the clowns trolls?
There ought to be clowns trolls.
Well, maybe next year.

Joe Biden has the clown monopoly.

This “robust” Iranian “debate” has been served up to Mr. Audacity on a silver
platter and the inexperienced fool has no idea what to do. He’s a teleprompted
speechifier and this development wasn’t in the socialist game plan.
Maybe when the novel idea of this phony’s election wears off, the swing voters that foolishly voted him in will realize Owebama”s too busy tearing up The Constitution and stealing our country to care about what’s going on elsewhere.

ontherocks on June 19, 2009 at 11:04 AM

If Barak Obama wants to claim CREDIT for what’s going on in Iran right now that, by itself, is not a problem.

The problem is that, no matter what happens next, he will refuse to take any RESPONSIBILITY whatsoever.

This has been the pattern of his entire life.

tin plated over bearing swaggering dictator with delusions of godhood

He, he, he. Let’s send him some Tribbles and see what they think of him. :)

No, the tribbles would love him. Michelle, on the other hand ….

For the record, if we’re throwing in Star Trek references, I vote for the episode, “A Piece of the Action.” With Obama as any one of the crime bosses, and Rahm as his lieutenant.

tom on June 19, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Since we “kicked Hezbollah out of Syria and Lebanon”, we didn’t support those governments in building communities to keep them out. This according to our “smart” VP.
Only The One can change the world and now they will use this rhetoric to justify it.

djaymick on June 19, 2009 at 11:28 AM

It will also be ugly when he leaves office and has to find some way to remain relevant when people are not so interested in him anymore.

highhopes on June 19, 2009 at 8:15 AM

That won’t happen for 8-10 years, and he still needs to visit all the 57 states.

Wolftech on June 19, 2009 at 11:33 AM

Obama, like Clinton, it’s always about “I”.

GarandFan on June 19, 2009 at 11:40 AM

Worry and despair are easy pits to slide into these days. Optimism is a distant memory.

SKYFOX on June 19, 2009 at 9:36 AM

I live in the Chicago area (ugh, I know…), and I work in a restaurant.

Before the election, my co-workers were very gung-ho for Obama, about 90%/10%, pro-HopeyChangey. The guests that I overheard talking were a little more evenly split, about 60%/40%. The pro-Bambi comments were plentiful.

Now? Not so much. By 2012, only the true believers will still be on board the Messiah’s train. Most everyone with a bank account will awaken from their kool-aid induced stupor and wonder what the Hell they were thinking. It’s already happening… I’m seeing it right before my very eyes.

jana on June 19, 2009 at 11:45 AM

This little episode is both revealing and amusing. Last Friday afternoon he all but took credit for Mousavi by Friday night his entire Iran policy was discredited and in ruins. I enjoyed his failure immensely. But the best part of this has been that now his arrogance and ego have trumped Iranian and American interests and he’s doubled down on failure. Amusing in this of course is to watch his sycophants side with the Mullahs to defend Barry’s policy. I love it! Go Barry go!

elduende on June 19, 2009 at 12:20 PM

Biden would fall for the Fizzbinn game.

O-blab-a-lot can’t change his underwear without appointing a czar.

brdchris1 on June 19, 2009 at 1:36 PM

Pay no attention to the burgeoning democracy next door. There are no such things as “seeds of democracy”. it is only coincidence that after 30 years of rule-a by Mullah, the people of Iran would demand fair elections right after Iraq got them.

Or something.

Keeping up with the Mustafas

RegularJoe on June 19, 2009 at 2:24 PM

If that is a ‘robust debate’ then I guess when the bullets start flying, that will be an ‘energetic debate’…

ElRonaldo on June 19, 2009 at 3:15 PM

Dang, time for a teleprompter and speech Czar.

dthorny on June 19, 2009 at 3:42 PM

And obviously, after the speech that I made in Cairo, we tried to send a clear message that we think there is the possibility of change.

It’s always about what HE did, about the speech HE made.

Nothing about what anybody else did, such as Roxana Saberi or Mousavi, or even Maliki in Iraq.

Those protestors in Iran know full well they could end up like those in Tienanmen Square, yet they persist at the risk of their lives. Some of them may remember Berlin in 1989, two years after a courageous President said “Tear Down This Wall”! Every one of those protestors in Iran has hundreds of times more courage than Obama ever had.

How about giving credit to those who replaced Saddam Hussein by Nouri al-Maliki in Iraq–American troops, David Petraeus, and oh, Heaven forbid, George W. Bush? Could those Iranian protestors be inspired by what happened on their western and eastern frontiers?
