Obama today,
this notion that somehow these hundreds of thousands of people who are pouring into the streets in Iran are somehow responding to the West or the United States.

Err ahhhh uhm… Didn’t Obama claim just last week the take credit FOR influence the election in Iran?

Obama June 12th,
Obama said he was “excited to see what appears to be a robust debate taking place in Iran.”
Pointing to the recent election of moderates in Lebanon’s parliamentary balloting,

an optimistic Obama thinks there is room for change in Iran.
“And obviously, after the speech that I made in Cairo, we tried to send a clear message that we think there is the possibility of change.

Why yes, yes he did take credit!

Is he already trying to shift the blame if things go bad?

Allahpundit, I have to agree with more than a few of the posters here. That was a pretty tepid statement. It's like saying "good protestors. You didn't defend yourself when you got the crap beat out of you by a tyrannical state." Peaceful protest is, generally, pretty ineffective when the people you are protesting have guns pointed at your head. I think it's racist to set the bar so low on this guy. He's in the job now, so its time to grow up. It's time for the media to stop babying him.

The bar has been set so low for Obama that even inept statements are unthinkingly approved by conservatives whose powers of reasoning are overwhelmed by their misplaced sense of fairness.

I can’t believe CBS would suppress this for any political reason. Can it be that they really don’t know a scoop when they see it?

I can't believe it didn't occur to you AP, as it did to onlineanalyist, that Obama asked that the sentence it be deleted. And why would he do that?

Firstly, it does show (inadvertently I'm sure) unequivocal support for the protesters. There's no indication yet that Obama wants to support the democracy protestors for that is what they are. (Obama wants to avoid criticizing the mullahs for denying the democratic aspirations of Iranians. Using the term democracy might remind people who planted the seeds of democracy in the Middle East).

Secondly, it is plainly a stupid statement. The protestors are not seeking Justice. They are seeking to have their votes counted. They are seeking fulfilment of their democratic aspirations. They want their votes counted..

It's very disappointing to see Morrissey and AP rush to defend Obama even as he continues to (at best) demonstrate his utter cluelessness. The bar has been set so low for Obama that even inept statements are unthinkingly approved by conservatives whose powers of reasoning are overwhelmed by their misplaced sense of fairness.

There are indeed many sensible things Obama could be saying if he didn’t want to upset the mullahs because he has his heart foolishly set on the ridiculous fantasy that can talk the mullahs into abandoning their nuclear ambitions. How's this:

I say to Ayatollah Khamenei * that this issue must be resolved peacefully. The hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Iranians, who are out on the streets peacefully demonstrating, obviously believe this election was not conducted fairly. Given the size and seriousness of the protest, this impasse to the good governance of Iran can be resolved without significant loss of life by the government acknowledging this reality. The impasse can be peacefully resolved by the government conducting new elections with the assistance of U. N. supervision in order to ensure that whatever the result, it will be seen by Iranians, and the whole world- and make no mistake the whole world is watching- as the true expression of the will of the Iranian people.

The alternative way of resolving this impasse is through the use of violence. The world community will not turn a blind eye to those who resort to violence. Nor will Allah.

* (do not address as Supreme leader)

Would it hurt the President to support where 'justice' comes from?

You know... Liberty and Freedom? To have one's voice heard in government, so that the people may be represented by its government. Of course if you actually believe in Liberty and Freedom you start on the slippery slope to less taxes, smaller government, accountable government, less intrusive government, fewer regulations...

Damn, I wish there was a politician who could say the words Liberty and Freedom and mean them by starting on that grand slippery slope so that government is but one tool available to the people, and not the only tool to be wielded like a bludgeon. Instead we get the 'justice' idea, but that only comes from a justly made government accountable to the will of the people via Liberty providing for the exercise of Freedom. JFK stood for that, as did Reagan, even if imperfect men they stated the perfect goal... Barack Obama? Not so much.

let me get this straight, he says that the masses are not responding to the U.S. "thousands protesting are somehow responding to the west or U.S., that's an old distraction trotted out" and yet his comments at the beginning of this:

“And obviously, after the speech that I made in Cairo, we tried to send a clear message that we think there is the possibility of change. And ultimately, the election is for the Iranians to decide, but just as has been true in Lebanon, what can be true in Iran as well is that you’re seeing people looking at new possibilities,” Obama said.

So he takes credit for starting this "debate" (revolution) and then says in a later interview the west has nothing to do with it...isn't it great how the ONE can straddle both side of the fence and the loyal media will not call him out on it

So he takes credit for starting this “debate” (revolution) and then says in a later interview the west has nothing to do with it…isn’t it great how the ONE can straddle both side of the fence and the loyal media will not call him out on it

If Obama has somehow already taken action, then I commend him.

The state department asked twitter to hold off on delays to allow dissidents a forum to convey information. That seems like a pretty prescient action in support of the protesters.

I just saw Rudi Bahktiar (sp?) on CNN.
First I gotta say damn she's hot.

But she practiaclly got into an argument with the CNN woman anchor about how would Moussavi be any better with women's right then dinner-jacket.
She almost talked over Rudi.

These CNN people seem to want the regime to stay in place.
Unbelievable.

And we stand behind those who are seeking justice in a peaceful way.
Why Behind them? Why not beside them? And so what if you're behind them? Is that going to stop the bullets aimed at them?

blockquote>And, you know, already we’ve seen violence out there. I think I’ve said this throughout the week.
Maybe you said it to Michelle or to the royal dog, but you didn't say it in public.

I want to repeat it that we stand with those who would look to peaceful resolution of conflict...
OK so now you are standing with them. Is that still with them as in behind them? Are you prepared to suffer any loss at all on their behalf?

and we believe that the voices of people have to be heard, that that’s a universal value that the American people stand for and this administration stands for…
So it really is all about words, right? IT makes no difference which group wins, and it makes no difference if Dinerjacket ends up murdering thousands to hold onto power, and lond as the voices are heard. Would these maybe be the same voices that you "think" you have been talking to all week above?

I love how the man child didn't want to come out and say that the US supported the protesters in their quest for freedom. Obama wanted us to remain neutral, so as not to upset Iran. Turns out Iran hates Obama with all of his neutrality. I guess Obama is finding out that the adults who were in the White House before him and his ilk were right all along. Some people do hate us just because we are America.

Freedom sucks for liberals! It's all about the state and how much central power over people's lives they can consolidate! Having us take care of ourselves each day is beyond their comprehension! How in the world do we possibly get out of bed, get dressed, feed ourselves, get to work and back and do it all over again the next day without a liberal messing around in the process? Answer...we don't!

Wow.
It's a police state now.

But it sounds like the protest is starting maybe slowly.
It's like Iran has been cut off from the world.

Muslims don't criticize Muslim dictators.

Don't know how to pronounce 'freedom' either.

Getting kind of kinky with the contortions.
