Barone: The President who Fell to Earth from the Sky
posted at 10:55 am on June 19, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Michael Barone reviews the latest polling on Barack Obama and his policies, and comes to the consensus opinion that the honeymoon has ended. Despite his high personal ratings after five months on the job, Obama has increasing resistance to the policies he’s championed. Overall, Obama’s biggest problem is that people don’t trust government — and he may not be helping matters. Barone points to the following indicators, among others:
● 69% say they have a great deal or quite a bit of concern about government ownership of General Motors and a 56%-35% majority opposes government aid to General Motors in return for a share of its stock
● 58% say the president and Congress should concentrate on keeping the budget deficit down, even if it takes longer for the economy to recover
● by a 52%-41% margin they prefer reducing the budget deficit to stimulating the economy
● only 30% think Obama has developed a clear plan for dealing with the budget deficit, while 60% believe he hasn’t
His conclusion? Get ready for political turbulence:
These results suggest a larger point, that despite the financial crisis and current economic distress, there has not been a drastic shift in American voters’ views of the balance between the market and government. The economic failures of the 1930s and successes of the 1940s convinced Americans to trust government more and markets less; the economic failures of the 1970s and successes of the 1980s convinced Americans to trust markets more and government less. These results show that American voters remain suspicious of centralized government power over the private sector and that they have great unease about the enormous far-larger-than-Bush’s budget deficits which experts project the Obama programs will produce.
If Obama’s big-government solutions succeed, then that would change this dynamic, a bet Obama will clearly lose. The $800 billion Porkulus has not deflected the upward trajectory of unemployment in the slightest, despite his economic team’s worthless projections in January. Obama himself now admits that unemployment will blow into double digits this summer, when he promised that the stimulus package would prevent it from rising to 8.8%. That will not build confidence in big-government solutions.
Health-care reform and cap-and-trade are two other areas where Obama risks credibility. It doesn’t take a math whiz or an economist to know that spending as much as $4 trillion to overhaul the private market health care sector seems rather stupid while the government faces an entitlement crisis in Medicare. Most people will wonder why reform doesn’t start by fixing the government-run portion of the industry first. As people learn more about the costs and implications of government control of energy production, they will wonder why this big-government push exists to impose a plan that will kill economic growth in the short, medium, and long terms.
Obama’s ratings were always going to come down to reality, and this is exactly what has happened. If he continues to roll the dice on big government — and loses — expect those ratings to come down a lot more, even the personal ratings.

As someone else pointed out, the poll results can be summed up this way:
I hate him (negative on policy) but I’m not a racist, honest (positive on personality).

It’s likely thta the upcoming healthcare debate will shape the rest of this legislative session. With the unified Democrat block breaking up, we’ll have to see real leadership from the Whitehouse to pull out a bill. It didn’t happen in the ’90s, and that affected the rest of the session. Wonder if that’ll be true here?

I think now the key for republicans and democrats with half a brain is to limit the damage he does. And, try and make sure there are ways to reverse things he doesn get passed.
tomas on June 19, 2009 at 11:02 AM
Wow. the entirety of the 1930s was a prime example of how government screws up the economy, while the second half of the 1940′s was a good example of how the economy flourishes when the government lets go.
Clearly, the statists have good propaganda machines.

The only reason why they are positive on
personality is because they don’t know him.
And that isn’t their fault. It is the media’s.
The MSM has a day of reckoning coming. Why?
Because Obama really is incompetent. And he
really is in a position above his experience
and abilities. Hiding those two essential
things about Obama will become harder and
harder to do.

I don’t think that the honeymoon has ended yet. Considering the things he has said and done so far, the fact that people are starting to suspect that he might not be doing a really swell job doesn’t strike me as sufficient.
People are starting to wake up, but I think they’re still hoping for a miracle cure. When that phase passes, then the honeymoon will be over.

I think Obam’ter and his Merry Band of Misfits knew this as well, which is why they have pushed so hard so fast for as much as possible. Why the hell else hold off almost two years to “stimulate the economy” when it MUST BE PASSED IMMEDIATELY?
As it stands now, he and his crew have the budget and authority to spread some wealth around in time to try to stay in good graces for election season.
JamesLee on June 19, 2009 at 11:09 AM
I don’t think his personal approval numbers are at 62%. I think a lot of people just don’t want to be called racists. I think the guy goes down to defeat in 2012 with 35% of the vote and a 62% personal approval number.
The sad part is that he would have 35% of the vote. The guy could strangle puppies every night on live TV and some people would vote for him, anyway.

The interesting thing to me is that we almost have all the elements for a perfect storm of negativity and an overnight plummeting of the poll numbers.
The White House seems sincerely shocked that they are facing so much opposition to the healthcare plan that has been one of their signature pieces of legislation. Not just startled but downright dumbfounded that this legislation hasn’t been given an easy pass by Congress.
More Democrats are speaking up against the filthy liar in the White House which is an indicator that more consituents are speaking out against the policies of the administration.
Obama tried to deflect the discussion this week by pandering to gays in the federal government by giving them some benefits and vowing to repeal the DOMA. This is merely sucking up to the base to shore up flagging support among a group who thought Obama would put social issues, particularly the legitimization of deviant lifestyle choices, at the forefront of his agenda.
There is criticism from all sides about the administration’s mishandling of the situation developing over in Iran.
The leftists who want Gitmo closed are finding that their guy lied about the speed he would do it nor are they thrilled with the concept that the unwanted terrorists might end up in their neighborhoods (there is something like 28 separate NIMBY bills in Congress right now).
In short, there are all these ways that Obama has completely and utterly failed as a President. Sure his wife has killer arms and he doesn’t think twice about blowing $500K in tax dollars to see a play in New York on a whim. But those of us who didn’t support the filthy liar in the White House have seen no reason to change our assessments. The idiots who voted the man into office are beginning to doubt their choice which is Obama’s real kryptonite trend.
My prediction is that all the meat and potato social issues will soon be in the forefront. Legitimizing the gay lifestyle in all its forms including repealing don’t ask/don’t tell for the military, full citizenship for illegals, and any other issue that will distract attention from what a truly evil administration this man has created.

The honeymoon is coming to an end with the sobering unemployment rate nearing double figures. Even Obama is admitting publically that it’s gonna happen which means he’s trying to stave off at least some of the negative sentiment that he knows will be coming his way.
People wanna be fair and give the guy a chance(personally I think 5 months is more than enough time). But when things are getting worse at a rapid pace, the public will start to get impatient and restless.
And we haven’t even been hit with the tax increases yet. When that happens, his poll numbers will drop 10-20 points overnight.
Doughboy on June 19, 2009 at 11:25 AM

Even if we manage to rid ourselves of this particular parasite Obama, we now know the Am. people are ripe to be plucked. They’ll go for any demagogue and demi-god. As stated previously it should not be forgotten that all Obama’s poll numbers are nuanced by a 40% rally in the stock market.
For the last six weeks, on declining volume, the market has traded in a very narrow range around the 200 day moving average. There is a huge move coming. Up, Obama and crew get more time. Down, his initiatives and presidency are at extreme risk.
Aside from his domestic policies his Carter, Bush 41 and Clinton foreign team will come under incredible ridicule especially if Iran continues unravel. Only Reagan and George W stood up to tyrants when given the opportunity.

The state run media will continue to be in denial and prop him up. The ONLY things that will begin to erode these numbers are pocketbook issues that the media cannot spin like:
1. Higher interest rates and inflation
2. Higher gas prices
3. Raising taxes on middle class
And in addition to those, the GOP grows a spine and starts standing up to him.
Maybe a major foreign policy incident like NKorea or Iran as well.
Until then the swing voters will continue to be drones….

He demonstrated how you can get under his skin when he attacked Fox. He was childish and petty. He cannot stand criticism or answering tough questions. Mostly because he needs TOTUS!
The way for us to fight him is to expose the federal government take over of our lives. Enlighten our families, neighbors and friends. Barone’s take proves people are slowly connecting the dots. By this fall, after all the foreign policy screw ups, and the economic fallout, we should see his numbers dip down.
And unless he is taking away our guns, or locking us up; do not go whacky in the streets. He wants us to riot so he can paint us as not just the party of no, but the party of uncontrolled terrorist types. We have to make sure we keep our powder dry unless there is a real need to take to the streets in a stronger manner than the Tea Parties. The American public is going to be on our side as long as we look rational to them.

Beck had some experts on a few months ago that said the market would rally back to the 8000 or so mark and then plummet. It may come in early 2010. Commercial real estate I hear is next on the balloon payment block for 2010. Huge problems there as they come due. That may be part of the plummet. As the pilot says, “Get ready for some chop.”

He’s very good at creating facts on the fly. He declares that the stimulus package so far, was only good enough to counterbalance the damage that Bush did. Had it not been for the stimulus package, unemployment would be much, much higher than it is. Also, by giving some of the money to the fat cats, who just put the money in the bank. That money is wasted. It should only go to people like him, who never have enough at the end of the month.

Instead of spending trillions on socialized medicine why don’t we just provide healthcare for the uninsured? What the hell is the difference between this and welfare? Obama’s plan for a one payor is going down the tube. However, the Democrat leaders will push for this, and I believe that in the long run the end result will be Medicare reform and insurance coverage for the ununsured, paid for in higher taxes. We are screwed either way. And if the GOP doesn’t exploit this, forget about 2010.

I have never met anyone who freely admitted they voted for Carter…everyone went to Woodstock, every politician walked with King, but no one voted for Carter…and like you said no one will have voted for Obama.
…have already began to hear the “I am a democrat so I voted for our only choice” backing away.

Speaking the mid-terms I hope the GOP doesn’t get full control of the House because it will force O to move to the middle and possibly reelection. Remember 1994 and Clinton. We haven’t see the full exstent of the spending yet. Wait to late fall or early next year when the real sh!t hits the fan.

If that’s what it takes, no problema. He shouldn’t have been the first black President anyway. I would have wished for the first black Pres. to be a conservative. Now I think “black” Presidents might get a bad name, which is OBAMA’s FAULT. He really is going to set the course of race relations back a generation. What a terrible shame.

Good job sir!
Jeff from WI you forward a good observation but I will submit there are plenty of female warriors on the right, as your hosts can attest. And if anybody could get on the right side of my wife they’d be overboard.

Granted, they see what they want.
Of course no one states anywhere that the stimulus money has created any jobs yet…except some wacko’s.
And history is against them…but facts are not important.

Crazy as it sounds, recent polls say over 40% of people DO believe anything bad is all Bush’s fault. Obama is counting on that, has been cultivating that feeling ever since Jan, and will continue to coast along blaming Bush at every opportunity. At this point it’s a Pavlovian response and may well continue unabated, prolonging the honeymoon.
Many voters are just lemmings running off the cliff with all their moron brother lemmings. But at least they can’t be called raaaaacist!
