Video: Soraya, 24 star on Iranian protests
posted at 12:14 pm on June 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Shoreh Aghdashloo, who stars in the upcoming and powerful film The Stoning of Soraya M, appeared today on Fox & Friends to discuss the uprising in her native Iran. From my earlier encounter with Aghdashloo, I know that she emigrated from Iran to escape the repressive Islamist revolution, and it took years for her to get her family out of the country as she worked in the West for democratic change in Iran. How does she see the protests, in the context of her own struggle? Aghdashloo confessed to mixed emotions (via YidwithLid):
Aghdashloo wisely does not take Steve Doocy’s bait when asked about Barack Obama. She says she was proud of Obama’s eventual statement, but stays away from domestic political analysis.
Aghdashloo sees the protests as already moving past Mousavi towards a greater reckoning with the system that produced the elections in general. The question will be whether the people of Iran can sustain the pressure long enough to get key elements of the regime to turn against the mullahs. The inclusion of so many women — Aghdashloo estimates their participation as 40% of the people in the street — will certainly give this more momentum, as women know they have the most to gain from a democratic reform movement, and the most to lose if it fails.
Of course, that’s what The Stoning of Soraya M is all about, too, but not just limited to Iran. The actual events transpired there, but stonings of women for unproven sexual indiscretions occur in many places in that hemisphere. Stoning depicts the fate of women in any system that strips them of individual rights and treats them like chattel, and rural Iran is far from the only place where that happens.
It opens on June 26th, and next Tuesday we will interview actor Navid Neghaban, who plays Soraya’s husband, about Iran, the movie, and the wider implications of Soraya’s death.

I love her. The House of Sand and Fog was very good, also. I knew a little bit about her history; I was wondering if she would go public about the events in Iran.

I saw her on O’Reilly’s show the other night. I was disappointed he didn’t ask her what the hell happened to Behrooz. ;-)

I love Shohreh Aghdashloo. She was great on “24″ and in The House of Sand and Fog (shoulda won the Oscar).
Gotta see if this movie is opening anywhere near me…

they claim the intervention of Churchill/Eisenhower that brought the Shah to power was not helpful…BULL
Mogedesh had just stole property from a British Oil company, was leaning marxist and Soviet Troops were near their border. What would’ve been better, allowing Iran to be on the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain or ourside??? The Mullah’s came to power because Jimmy Carter was limpwristed, end of discussion

The Stoning of Soraya M is already marked on my planner for the one day it is going to be shown in my area.

I think the success of Fox & Friends can be chalked up to the fact that people like to feel better about themselves.
After a few moments spent with that show, how could one not feel smarter than them?
YYZ on June 18, 2009 at 12:27 PM
Where has Briggite Gabriel been? She used to be on Fox all the time, but disappeared around the time her book came out last summer. I miss her analysis.

She gives quick reports sometimes

She says she has the feeling that Iran is at the “dawn of democracy.” Gosh, I hope she’s right.
Loved her on “24.”

Have you interacted in your community today.
How does your genius manifest itself?

Hahaha how dare you make a comment like that about Steve Doocy. Feel free to criticize Brian and Gretchen, but leave Steve Doocy out of it.
Shock the Monkey on June 18, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Iranian people actually risking their lives in the streets of Iran said they are doomed without Obama’s support. But they are not to be believed over the opinion of an expatriate safely living in Hollywood and that of a president inexperienced in foreign policy.
This isn’t an episode of 24. You cannot yell, “Cut!” and do multiple re-takes. Obama’s flaccid response to the crisis is to avoid “meddling.” When do Mahmoud’s thugs spray the crowds on full-auto and roll the tanks?

Here comes a fatwa against Shoreh; maybe she can share a safe house with Wilders.

Yes. Exactly.
And that’s what Dear Leader does not want, as He doesn’t want the American people to get any ideas.

I feel smarter after listening to every Ogabe speech, dirty and with a skin-crawling sensation, but definitely smarter.

YYZ, your problem is that you feel smarter than everyone.

Bwaaaa! Right on. What I wouldn’t give to see that many Americans in the streets of our nation protesting Ogabe and his ruinous policies.

The ULTIMATE fear of the left,Tea Parties going to the next level. After what this traitor is doing to our country, only a revolution will restore or rights and it’s greatness.

I can’t decide if her voice is sexy or creepy. This situation is too confusing.

I know, she’s so beautiful and graceful and comfortable being a woman. I can think of a few women who could use a lesson from her.

There are actually 2 deleted scenes with Behrooz that show different resolutions for his character. Of course neither were used in the show, so technically we still don’t know what happened to him.
Doughboy on June 18, 2009 at 1:31 PM
Sexy.

In lieu of any geo-political comment, I’ll just say “hubba hubba”.
tsj017 on June 18, 2009 at 1:34 PM
Beg to differ–Fox and Friends is probably the only morning show where the hosts (all three of them) ask smart, probing questions about issues, and either get straight answers or not-so-artful dodges. Sure, there’s a lot of fluff about cooking and barbecues and country music, but there’s also a lot of serious discussion.
Would Ms. Aghdashloo stand a chance on the Today Show or Good Morning, America?
You’ve got to wonder what’s REALLY happening in Iran when listening to women like Shoreh Aghdashloo or Roxana Saberi. Is Iran really at a tipping point, and do the protesters need a little nudge to push the regime over the edge?
You’ve got to wonder what would push men to keep beautiful women hidden under veils, or stone them to death. As Jesus said, let him who is without sin cast the first stone. No one dared when Jesus was there.
Steve Z on June 18, 2009 at 1:35 PM
LIbs often misquote that to say. “Let him WITH sin get stoned.”
Jeff from WI on June 18, 2009 at 2:10 PM
I’d trust anything from most of the cast of 24. Except Cherrie Palmer. I still have nightmares…
DrewbieDoo on June 18, 2009 at 2:12 PM
Another reason to hope for the liberalization of Iran: to get the beautiful Persian women to uncover their faces.
I haven’t seen her lately, but anyone remember Rudi Bahktiar from CNN (and then FOX)? She was my favorite talking head.

Ageless, beautiful, sexy and smart: Shohreh Aghdashloo.
Sort of makes me not care what her opinions are, just as long as she keeps expressing them.

Wow, indeed.

Is this not what we Conservatives seek from Obama? To stand for Liberty and Self-Determination? One doesn’t need to meddle or choose sides to offer principled moral support to those that are expressing the desire for freedom.
Obama; smothering hope, resisting change.
Maquis on June 18, 2009 at 3:23 PM
Indeed.
Loxodonta on June 18, 2009 at 3:53 PM
Coolest thing about the tea parties is that the participants are also generally supporters of second amendment rights. And many of them likely have concealed carry permits. So if anyone shows up starting some sh!t, they’re going to regret it.
You know that if you went to any leftist protest it’s a safe bet that everyone of them is unarmed. And I don’t JUST mean intellectually.
UltimateBob on June 18, 2009 at 3:58 PM
With a couple of exceptions, I’d bet that we will wish that a lot of them would cover their faces back up.
But Shohreh Aghdashloo is beautiful.
UltimateBob on June 18, 2009 at 4:01 PM
The people of Persia have much to be proud of.
America’s had it easy — so many of world’s great civilizations have been chained down by dysfunctional leadership that we’ve been able to compete without much opposition. If nations like India, China or Persia ever unleash the full intellectual and creative powers of their people, we’re in some serious competition.
Oh, and Aghdashloo’s voice is delightful.
Abelard on June 18, 2009 at 4:02 PM
I can’t believe shes 57. When I saw the video start, all I wanted to say was hello nurse!
her and catherine bell, we gotta get some more of those iranian women here in the US.
