Olive Garden dumps Letterman; Update: Olive Garden denies; Update: E-mail shows OG, Hellmans backing away from Letterman

A more sincere apology to Sarah Palin and her daughters hasn’t helped David Letterman and CBS avoid a sponsor exodus, and neither has Palin’s acceptance of his second attempt at a walk-back.  Politico reports that Olive Garden is now telling customers that they will pull the ads they bought for the rest of the year after a deluge of complaints hit their offices:

Following a week of back and forth between CBS late night comic David Letterman and Sarah Palin over a crude joke he told about the Alaska Republican governor’s daughter, the Olive Garden restaurant says it is cancelling all of its scheduled ads on Letterman’s “Late Show” for the rest of the year.

In an email to a Letterman critic obtained by POLITICO, a spokeswoman for the Italian restaurant chain wrote that “there will be no more Olive Garden ads scheduled for ‘The Late Show’ with David Letterman in this year’s broadcast schedule,” citing the talk show host’s “inappropriate comments.”

“We apologize that Mr. Letterman’s mistake, which was not consistent with our standards and values, left you with a bad impression of Olive Garden,” wrote Sherri Bruen, the company’s guest relations manager.

According to John Ziegler, who attended (but contrary to reports did not organize) protests at Letterman’s studio earlier this week, this won’t be the last sponsor to abandon CBS’ “Late Night”.  Hellman’s Mayonnaise will also pull its ads for the same reason, Ziegler told me earlier this afternoon.  More may follow suit, even after a ratings boost for Letterman just as his bete noir, Jay Leno, finally retired from late-night television.

Should the boycotts continue?  Palin accepted the apology, after all, and seems to want to move forward.  Letterman, though, has used Palin as a favorite punching bag, especially when he invites Katie Couric to join him on his show.  Her followers have a particular animus for both CBS stars and the network itself after last year’s treatment of Palin, which Ziegler documented in Media Malpractice, available at his site.

Update: Olive Garden denies that they’ve pulled any ads, but refuses to say whether they’ll do any more buys for Letterman this year:

The Olive Garden restaurant chain may not have been happy with David Letterman’s jokes about Gov. Sarah Palin and her family, but no order was issued to pull commercials from Mr. Letterman’s show, a spokesman for the company said Thursday.

Rich Jeffers, the spokesman, said Olive Garden was attempting to counter what he called “erroneous information out there,” which he said came from the website Politico. The site posted a report by Andy Barr on Thursday saying that the restaurant was “cancelling all its scheduled ads” on Mr. Letterman’s show for the rest of the year.

Mr. Jeffers said in a telephone interview that no such cancellation decision had been made and that the company’s schedule of commercials in the show had simply expired “earlier this month.” …

Asked if Olive Garden would buy new commercials in the Letterman show, Mr. Jeffers said, “There has been no decision along those lines yet.”

Still haven’t heard an announcement about Hellmans yet, either.

Update II: I got the e-mails in question from Olive Garden and Unilever, the parent company of Hellmans/Best Foods, through John. The Olive Garden e-mail strongly suggests that the company had decided not to buy any more advertising. First, Olive Garden’s reponse:

Dear [customer]:

Thank you for expressing your concerns about Olive Garden and allowing us an opportunity to respond.

We understand your concern about Mr. Letterman’s inappropriate comments. Olive Garden screens network television programs whenever possible. Telecasts, such as The Late Show with David Letterman, are taped on a daily basis, preventing advertisers from reviewing the content prior to airing. We apologize that Mr. Letterman’s mistake, which was not consistent with our standards and values, left you with a bad impression of Olive Garden. There will be no more Olive Garden ads scheduled for The Late Show with David Letterman in this year’s broadcast schedule.

We have not yet finalized next year’s advertising plan but will consider our valued guests’ opinions when doing so.

Again, thank you for contacting us with your comments, and we hope you will continue to think of Olive Garden as a place to visit with your family and friends.

That actually gibes with both Politico and Olive Garden. It doesn’t claim that the restaurant will pull its ads because it acknowledges that there are no ads to pull — but then the e-mail claims it will not buy advertising on Letterman through the rest of the year, and then kind of retreats into the “no decision will be made” mode.

Next, Unilever, which is more explicit:

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us regarding your disappointment with the program content which contained a commercial for a Unilever product. We never wish to offend anyone and your opinions are appreciated regarding this subject matter. Advertising for Hellmann’s or media buys are done months in advance and unfortunately we can’t foresee issues in the media before they come up. We appreciate the feedback from our consumers and we’ve decided to pull our online ads from the Letterman show from our advertising schedule moving forward.

We hope that this information has given you a better understanding of our advertising practices. Thank you again for taking the time to share your views with us. You can be assured that your comments will be considered as we continue to challenge our perceptions about what is appropriate for us in today’s environment.

Kind regards,

Your friends at Hellmann’s/Best Foods

I have a call into Unilever for a response, but that looks like an explicit statement of withdrawal.

Update III: One commenter notes that Hellmans/Unilever is only threatening to pull their online ads. Perhaps that’s all they bought in the first place, or they may just be hedging their bets. The online ad revenue for CBS and Letterman will not be terribly substantial, though.

What do you think? Cast your vote in the poll:

Isa 53:2-6
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
3 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

Pulling Hellman’s “on line advertisements” isn’t the same as pulling television ads from Letterman’s show. IF they have any scheduled, which I don’t know, for I don’t watch Letterman, and never have. The on-line ads cost pennies and are irrelevant, the TV ads are the ones that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Lose THEM, Letterman’s bosses would likely notice. Otherwise, not so much.

Imus sincerely apologized until hell wouldn’t have it and it did him no good whatsoever.

If Letterman gets off the hook by anything short of public self-immolation, then there is no justice. He needs to go. Period. End of discussion.

In his last apology he told his audience it wasn’t their fault they misunderstood the joke that it was flawed…nope that isn’t what happened. He stepped in it, and now he is getting it from all directions, not just from Republicans, not just from Conservative Republicans

PUMAS, N.O.W. not just Conservatives, not Just Republicans.

He should have left the audience out of his last apology. The CBS poll that asked if people excepted his apology.

28% yes
72% no

He should not have included the audience in his apology they don’t want to share in the personal hell he created for himself.

He is just going to have to move on, and stop apologizing. Rebuild his brand if possible. Rehabilitate, have Conservatives and Moderates on his program, and don’t be a Dick to them. Oh and get new sponsors. Geeze what a great top ten list ….top ten advertisers that dumped me today LOL! Now that’s funny, I don’t care what no one sayz.

I can’t watch YouTube at work, but is that the “What’s next?!” guy? He’s insane, but he makes a lot of good points in his rants.

As for the Letterman boycott, I have no problem with private companies deciding for whatever reason that they no longer wish to be in business with the Late Show and CBS, but I’m personally over it. Letterman’s an a-hole, but he apologized and Palin accepted. Let’s move on.

The fact that these sponsors are listening to the ABSOLUTE morons that were at that protest is beyond embarrassing. I assume none of you have heard audio of protesters being interviews have you? It’s not about getting Letterman fired, in my case anyway. It’s about bleeding the dragon of the liberal, government-funded political machine.
ACORN gets taxpayer dollars to work for one side of the political spectrum. ABC is being a government mouthpiece, as is PMSNBC, CNN, CBS, etc. They are using our money to elect politicians who will force more tyranny upon us.

It would be wise for us to be careful not to get railed from both ends (gov’t and private sector) by giving our hard earned money to companies who work to take away our individual freedoms, even tangentially.

At least it is widely recognized that Dave’s Rape joke was utterly distasteful. Even N.O.W thought it was bad. I would say that their are millions of people who would classify what Dave said as a rape joke since it is very plausible that Dave targetted Willow. The one who was at the game.

On June 8 maybe Dave didn’t know it was Willow. But by June 9 Dave most certainly knew it was Willow and yet he took another swipe at Plain’s daughter knowing that she was only 14.

How sick is that. By June 9 everyone on the planet knew that it was Willow at the game. That is what the buzz was all about. It was viral by then.

5. Imus repeatedly apologized to Sharpton face to face
6. Imus apology was immediate

It was nice to see the Palin family vindicated in some way for the ridiculous level of negative media attention they have all been subject to.

However, she knew when it was time to move on and so should everyone else worried about the big picture.

Continuing to position her as a victim is leftist in practice and not the ideal strategy for promoting a confident, capable leader on the right, at any level.

igglesphan on June 18, 2009 at 7:09 PM

Did anybody really listen to what Governor Palin actually said?????? She was offended on a personal level, but the bigger picture is far more offensive to all women. You can not tell a racial, ethnic, religious or homosexual joke, but it is open season on women and young girls. Call them whatever you want, say whatever you want about women and you may do so without any repercussions. It’s bad when it’s a black or jew, but it’s funny when it’s a woman. When the offended is willing to let it go, so should everyone else. Otherwise it becomes an issue of the intolerant right wing crucifying a left winger for any reason they can grasp onto.

I certainly don’t want to be seen in that light or feel like that’s what I’m doing. I think it’s up to Palin, and she let it go. So should everyone else.

You people are sickening who are calling for his firing. Just because you do not like “edgy” comedy, please don’t ruin it for the rest of us. Fine, the joke wasn’t funny, but to call for his firing is absurd. I just wish that CBS would actually talk to a couple of the people calling for his firing, and figure out in about 10 seconds that they are lunatics and then tell them to go screw.

EVERYONE knows the joke was meant towards the elder Palin daughter. The joke wouldn’t even make sense if it was directed at Willow. And anyone who knows anything about David Letterman, like him or not, knows that he does not allow jokes on anyone underage on his show. Comics have to adjust their material all the time because he just won’t allow it. Personally, i don’t like Letterman at all. Never found him funny or entertaining, and his politics sicken me, which makes me even more mad that I have to defend him against you moral crusaders, the humorless, and the conservatives who cannot ever see the bigger picture.

It’s a disease. Don’t underestimate it.

Problem is, Dave’s only edgy in one direction. Talk about anything worth lampooning Obama about, and he becomes like Chris Crocker sobbing in that YouTube video to “Leave Brittany Alone!”. Except of course in this case he’s telling people to leave the President of the United States alone. Man, you can’t get much edgier humor than that.

Just because you do not like “edgy” comedy, please don’t ruin it for the rest of us. Fine, the joke wasn’t funny, but to call for his firing is absurd.

So, is there some demand for not-funny comedy about “edgy” subjects like rape? I thought the point of comedy is that it makes you laugh. Why don’t you just cruise for around looking for car accidents or something? Maybe you’ll luck out and find someone choking or having a heart attack, and you can get a good laugh.

EVERYONE knows the joke was meant towards the elder Palin daughter. The joke wouldn’t even make sense if it was directed at Willow.

thphilli on June 18, 2009 at 7:40 PM

Why is the joke funnier if it’s about Bristol? Do you think Letterman really cared either way? Obviously not.

HBO can play all the filth jokes they want. If people want to pay to listen to pedo jokes etc fine. You have to PAY which shows your support for it.

CBS is free. Regulated by the FCC. Advertisers pay to be associated with programing. If the viewers demand satisfaction with their pocketbooks, what is the big problem? Dave can go to be a sexist pig with Bill Maher on HBO. (Notice I didn’t complain about Maher’s joke about Letterman having sex with both girls on Mahers Stage).

portlandon on June 18, 2009 at 7:56 PM

YYZ on June 18, 2009 at 7:58 PM

@ alliebobbitt on June 18, 2009 at 7:53 PM

I am sure SOME people found the joke funny. Personally I have had enough of the Palin nonsense both ways. Theoretically, the joke is funnier about Bristol because she was pregnant during the campaign and is an unwed teenage mother. The joke has no humor in it if it was truly directed at Willow, because there is no basis for the proposed situation that the viewer can recall.

Enough about explaining how jokes may or may not work, again, who are you to tell others what they may find funny? I assume that you have never made a “drop the soap” prison joke? That is rape too and is one of the most common jokes on the planet. You have a lot of moral crusading to do.

thphilli on June 18, 2009 at 8:00 PM

I take it you neither know the history of the joke, nor have you seen the movie about the joke.

thphilli on June 18, 2009 at 7:45 PM

I have seen the movie and know the history of the joke. Sarah Silverman’s was one of the weaker goes at it, because there are some things that just aren’t funny.

Just because you don’t find it funny, who the hell are you to tell me I cannot find it funny?

thphilli on June 18, 2009 at 7:45 PM

You can find it funny, but most people are creeped out by rape jokes. I like the description in Wikipedia: “It has evolved from a clichéd staple of vaudevillian humor into a postmodern anti-joke.”

They key to comedy is the aim. Nobody likes jokes that take shots at those who are too weak to defend themselves, like 14 YO girls, AIDS patients, the developmentally challenged.

alliebobbitt on June 18, 2009 at 8:01 PM

@ portlandon on June 18, 2009 at 7:56 PM

The problem is that NONE of you who are offended watch David Letterman. You got offended after seeing the clip on the internet or hearing about it on the news. And no, its not your right to ask for people you don’t find funny to be fired. There are hundreds of channels with thousands of shows, turn the damn dial. You have no right to have programming you find acceptable at all times on all channels. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. If enough people feel that way, advertisers won’t advertise on the show. If advertisers don’t advertise, the company will fire Letterman. That is how it works for ALL of television and radio.

thphilli on June 18, 2009 at 8:03 PM

How’s that shoe-leather taste, Davey Boy?

hillbillyjim on June 18, 2009 at 8:06 PM

@ alliebobbitt on June 18, 2009 at 8:01 PM

Really? I find all sorts of jokes hilarious, as do MILLIONS of other people. I find jokes about AIDS patients, disabled people, children, pedophiles, especially the developementally challenged, etc. hilarious. In fact, I would have to guess that a majority of people do, or else “shock jock” radio programs would not be successful. Again, why shouldn’t people laugh at EVERYTHING? Nothing can’t be made into a joke. They won’t always be funny, most of the time they will be bombs. But there are HILARIOUS jokes about every subject. Hell, South Park is one of the most famous television shows EVER, and they have joked about ALL of those subjects and more.

thphilli on June 18, 2009 at 8:07 PM

Theoretically, the joke is funnier about Bristol because she was pregnant during the campaign and is an unwed teenage mother.

That’s funny to you? I think it takes a lot of courage to raise a child at so young an age and go to college. My mother did it at 19, and it was the best thing that could have happened to her, though she didn’t think so at first.

The joke has no humor in it if it was truly directed at Willow, because there is no basis for the proposed situation that the viewer can recall.

Except that Willow was the daughter who was actually at the game. Again, I really don’t think it mattered to Letterman or his low-brow audience.

Some men like the “bros before hos” camaraderie of prison. How do you know dropping the soap isn’t like asking for a light in Chelsea?

alliebobbitt on June 18, 2009 at 8:07 PM

This is sweeter than I could have imagined. First Olive Garden listens to us. And now I can stop wondering what to give a lib for her birthday–an OG gift certificate.

BitterClinger on June 18, 2009 at 8:16 PM

I find jokes about AIDS patients, disabled people, children, pedophiles, especially the developementally challenged, etc. hilarious.

Tell Andrew Dice Clay he can have his career back then.

Hell, South Park is one of the most famous television shows EVER, and they have joked about ALL of those subjects and more.

thphilli on June 18, 2009 at 8:07 PM

Again, it’s about generosity of spirit. Here’s an example of South Park’s humor… Matt Stone and Trey Parker made a documentary called How’s Your News? It was a news program put on by special needs adults at Camp Jaberwocky, Martha’s Vineyard. The producers arranged for a group of campers to take a road trip across the country and interview people.

Would it be funny if they were making fun of the disabled? No, it would be disgusting. The movie gave a unique glimpse of these “special” people’s world, and often their subjects look ridiculous. It is more funny watching people try to be politically correct or patronize them without realizing it, because good comedy takes you by surprise.

We all know Bristol had a child out of wedlock. There’s no surprise there, it’s been drubbed endlessly in the media, and most Americans think keeping a child rather than having an abortion is courageous.

I think we should boycott sponsors of the ABC infomercial on health care. They won’t allow conservative ads run during that time, anyone fool enough to sponsor that crap deserves to lose the support of conservatives.

msmveritas on June 18, 2009 at 5:10 PM

This is a very big deal. At no time in U.S. history has the Blue Room been used for a townhall meeting. It is beneath the President of the United States to behave in this manner by using the White House, and to hijack the media in this manner. This is PRAVDA-101! I am with msmvertias!

If Imus was fired, Dave should be fired. This is a pattern of behavior capped off with the absolute vile Bill Maher said both on his show, and Larry King. Until the Left pays a price, and realizes we mean business, I say continue to use the free market, and any other means to not just achieve justice for Sarah Palin and her family, but for ALL women in this nation.

Hey, a lot of people found 2 Girls and a Cup hilarious. But if you think Letterman should aim for the kind of comedy that couldn’t even make it to cable, then why are you complaining about his sponsors dropping him? Let the market decide, eh?

alliebobbitt on June 18, 2009 at 8:34 PM

I was inclined to ignore you, but I’m in the mood to parse sentences tonight.

This is so stupid. Anyone who supports this nonsense is an ass.

Ad hominem attack: That makes your argument illogical and invalid

This is the same BS that Sharpton pulls, and it leads to a dumbing down of comedy so that comedians refuse to take chances.

No, it leads to comedians not making jokes about raping young girls or calling women whores and prostitutes.

If comedians wish to take chances, they can laugh about sex while not wearing a condom. (That was joke)

Seriously its embarrassing now that its our side calling for someones job, i thought it was just the left that were oversensitive morons.

Before you engage in your second ad hominem attack in one post, perhaps you should consider that calling someone a moron, when your own run-on sentence is rife with grammatical errors, could be construed as a bit disingenuous.

>Palin accepted the apology, which makes the issue over. The fact that these sponsors are listening to the ABSOLUTE morons that were at that protest is beyond embarrassing.

Embarrassing to whom? To you? I believe the sponsors were more likely listening to the consumers who were writing to express their disgust that a man who would demean a woman by calling her a whore would be financially supported by companies claiming to be family oriented.

I assume none of you have heard audio of protesters being interviews have you?

That’s interviewed, not interviews. Actually, no, I didn’t, because I don’t watch the drive by media. I had enough Liberal indoctrination while growing up and in college. I don’t need it in the few things I think are worthy to watch on television. Besides, most of us know the media will find the most extreme protester and highlight that one to make all conservatives look like fools. I would guess the vast majority of people protesting were friendly and polite.

Where they call Letterman a rapist and hope that his son is raped.

If they were truly saying those things, then that is just as wrong as Letterman making rape jokes.

I assume that you have never made a “drop the soap” prison joke?

No, because rape jokes aren’t funny, period.

Theoretically, the joke is funnier about Bristol because she was pregnant during the campaign and is an unwed teenage mother.

No, it wasn’t funny at all because she was being called a whore and a prostitute.

I think you are a typical Moral Relativistic person who doesn’t want to believe that there are such things as standards and decency.

Beaglemom on June 18, 2009 at 8:34 PM

Firing Imus was wrong. So your solution is to fire another person. Excellent logic. You DON’T, like what Sharpton does, so to protest this, you do exactly what he does. Your logic is infallible.
