Obama has fired 2 IGs in 2 weeks, leashed another
posted at 8:47 am on June 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The firing of Gerald Walpin as Inspector General was not an isolated incident, as the Chicago Tribune reports today. Two more IGs have been dismissed in the past two weeks, and Senator Charles Grassley has started demanding answers. The sudden push to rid the government of independent watchdogs appears to coincide with Barack Obama’s plans to use government spending to get control over more aspects of American life, such as with stimulus spending, the financial sector, and volunteer organizations (via Dan Riehl):
He was appointed with fanfare as the public watchdog over the government’s multi-billion dollar bailout of the nation’s financial system. But now Neil Barofsky is embroiled in a dispute with the Obama administration that delayed one recent inquiry and sparked questions about his ability to freely investigate.
The disagreement stems from a claim by the Treasury Department that Barofsky is not entirely independent of the agency he is assigned to examine — a claim that has prompted a stern letter from a Republican senator warning that agency officials are encroaching on the integrity of an office created to protect taxpayers. …
The dispute comes as Grassley, ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, is looking into the abrupt firings within the last week of two other inspectors general ¿ one of whom was fired by the White House and the other by the chair of the International Trade Commission.
Both inspectors general had investigated sensitive subjects at the time of their firings.
Grassley is now concerned about whether a pattern is emerging in which the independence of the government’s top watchdogs — whose jobs were authorized by Congress to look out for waste, fraud and abuse — is being put at risk.
The positions themselves indicate where the White House wants to go with its efforts. Barofsky ruffled feathers in April when his watchdog report showed that the Obama administration had placed insufficient safeguards on Porkulus spending. This later caused Joe Biden to shrug and tell the media, “Some people are being scammed already,” as if it wasn’t the job of the administration to stop it from happening. Barofsky now has a leash around his neck, with the White House insisting that he answers only to Treasury.
We’ve already covered the case of Gerald Walpin, whose work brought him into conflict with Obama crony Kevin Johnson, now the mayor of Sacramento. The White House and Johnson claim that there is no connection between the two, but this video from Naked Emperor News tells another story:
Walpin stands between the White House and their desire to use AmeriCorps as a reward system for their political allies and to use government money for the kind of “community organizing” that put Obama in the White House. His report to Congress made that difficult in Sacramento, where Mayor Johnson had been blocked from receiving federal grant money for his admitted earlier fraud. Walpin’s independence had to be removed, and in this case, Walpin had to be smeared to make it stick.
The third incident came last week at the International Trade Commission, where Judith Gwynne worked independent of the White House, and which will be a critical position as Obama reshapes trade arrangements around the world. An ITC employee earlier this year “forcibly removed” paperwork from Gwynne. Rather than back the IG after Grassley wrote a letter demanding answers, the political appointees at the ITC dumped her.
We are seeing a pattern, no longer just a single data point. IGs work independently to protect taxpayers from corruption and abuse from its own government agencies. A coordinated attack on IGs certainly suggests hostility to that mission, which isn’t the Hope and Change Obama promised on the campaign trail.

By 2012, Obama’s closet is going to be a veritable bone avalanche. But, he’s a democrat, so he’ll get away clean.

Speaking of criminals: Sorry to temporarily seem off topic but I will try to tie it back in to our current subject.
.
Dear Ed,
.
Where is the follow on stories related to the Blago/Rahm/Obama investigation via that Fitzgerald prosecuter. It appears to have fallen of the radar. Rezco(sp) was a part of the chicago machine apparatis and this current violation of the law concerning theses IG’s smells similar in the standard operating procedures of our administrations ability to deflect and distract attention away from the real criminal activity versus the whistle blowers claims. Am I wrong here in making such claims. If so, please enlighten me to this rule whereby the messenger is being evisorated and the accused (Obamaadministration) is being given a free pass. As far I know, you violate the law, indictments are issued. At a minimum, there can be grand jury inquiries made in such instances. Somebody help me out on this. I am baffled.

Meanwhile our Republican leadership sits on their tongues.

More on Senator Grassley. He’s the brave Senator who faced down those smarmy lawyers who testified against Clarence Thomas when Leftist media smeared him with the Anita Hill fabrication.
I remember the worst evening of the kangaroo court, when a panel of creepy Leftist lawyers were being grilled by Grassley, who was a member of the Judiciary Committee, and one particularly arrogant little bastard treated Grassley with overt contempt, pretty much openly calling him a hick and a corn pone from flyover country.
I’ll never forget how gracefully Senator Grassley handled himself that night. And more importantly, I’ll never forget that it was right around the time when I fully realized how truly and essentially immoral the Democrat Party had become.

This is only the beginning. Plan on more IG heads to roll in the near future.
Obviously we can’t have anyone investigating this! With unemployment going through the roof, it’s obvious the One’s “Stimulus Plan” (a plan that simply had to be passed before anyone could actually read it), is NOT working as advertised. The only thing being “stimulated” is government graft and corruption.
It can’t be revealed that Porkulous is nothing more than a giant SLUSH FUND for Democrats, non-profits and community organizers! For heaven’s sake, how would they survive without all this free cash? You don’t really expect these folks, like Kevin Johnson, to live on their government salaries…do you?
Just wait until “free” health care is passed. Dems everywhere will be singing “We’re in the Money!”

I’ve written both my idiot Senators (Boxer, Feinstein) and told them that as I know they’re aware of the laws their president is blatantly violating (bankruptcy, this IG issue), and as they’ve been silent about it to date, that I have to presume that ideology now trumps law in America, which I said isn’t all bad, because I am ideologically opposed to excessive taxes, as are millions of other presently-angry Americans.

We only have to look at Obama’s history of experience. His only executive experience prior to this–
He ran the Chicago Annenberg Challenge in the exact same way Walpin describes the NY program.
You get a source of money, “match” programs that already exist, and make sure your friends get in on the action. Results are unimportant (and in fact were poor with CAC). Only now, our tax dollars are the funding source.
I think he hid the CAC not because of Ayers, but because of fiscal incompetence. I wish Stanley Kurtz would resurrect some of his reporting, sans Ayers angle.

The America I know isn’t yet ready to say there is no going back, that the disasters being enacted by the Oturd can’t be repaired or reversed. I leave such hand-wringing and moaning to the those who won’t stand up when the call comes.
You are probably right, there will be some sort of major upheaval and most likely a violent one; even a GOP win in 2010 or 2012 would cause those who have invested their souls in Oturd to react badly. The left was out of power for too long and they decided they will never let that happen again.

Daggett on June 18, 2009 at 10:10 AM
So what’s racist about that? It’s the American 2 party system. This is the left’s reply to any critical opposition and it’s gotten rather tiring.
Now that we are nearing the end of blaming Bush for what was “inherited”, the left has to continue to diminish opposing conservative views.
Our system was set up to have checks and balances – like a ship. Right now, the ballasts are all on the left – including mainstream media. It’s not their job to present Obama in a “positive” way.
I’ve always believed in our system, but as we tilt further to the left, I hope that more critical thinkers can summon the courage to stand up.
The ship needs to be righted before it totally flips upside down and sinks.

Churchill said this on October 29, 1941, when he visited Harrow School. It was after the Blitz and things were looking up a bit for Britain.
“But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this period–I am addressing myself to the School–surely from this period of ten months, this is the lesson: Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never–in nothing, great or small, large or petty–never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy. “

I believe the WH has conceded to Grassley that Walpin was fired over the Johnson/St.Hope matter specifically.
Also, when the Walpin story broke we were told Obama was a “co-sponsor” of the legislation. I haven’t heard that repeated too much but it turned out Claire McCaskill was an author which made me think “figures Obama didn’t write or help write it, just attached his name to it”, still it’s an added wrinkle if he—as the evidence does suggest—is violating that law.

Seriously, a guy that thinks he can and should remake America in his own image doesn’t give a damn about the lives of those he destroys along the way. Collateral damage for the greater good is always easily explained away. You can’t be a revolutionary if you get overly concerned over a few broken eggs.
Just waiting for the anti-revolutionary meme to play:
“Yes mistakes have been made…But there are those among us that stand in the way of progress, that seek to take you back to the dark days of (fill in the blank) you know who they are….and we should not allow them to sacrifice progress and your needs for the sake of their own personal greed and misguided beliefs”
~or something like that…..it is coming….Every revolutionary needs his evil opposition from which to frame his agenda. The more revolutionary the agenda to more evil the opposition must become.

I have the same reaction. But somehow Obama is so powerful he can’t be held accountable. This is despicable criminal behavior.
I remember a few mentions of how Obama threw money at the Chicago school system and there were no improvements in the system. I wonder who got rich then and if that is how he bought all the media.
This can’t be exposed until some honest Democrats and some mainstream media start to expose it. Until then it is just us.
Is anyone in law enforcement or the Democratic party honest anymore. It sure seems like Obama has bought the entire country.

And it is not enough for Obama to have all the state run media, plus newspapers and magazines that fawn and drool all over him, he is incensed that Fox news actually has an opposing position to balance that out. He wants no opposing position and it really grates on him or he wouldn’t be whining about it all the time. This is scary to me – he wants control of all the media. Yesterday. I felt the same way you did in that we are surrounded by zombies. This past week has been really depressing for me because I do not see enough of those in Washington on our side come to the mics on Fox, and passionately fighting for Americans.
Several folks here told me to buck up, and things were going to be okay. They were right, and I was wrong in being upset because I was succumbing to what this Alinsky/Cloward-Piven was designed to do to the public.
Sure there are going to always be Obamazombies, but based on what we are seeing on the economic front, I think more are waking up to “WTH!” moments than what we realize. Rassmussen and other sources have lately shown some very positive trends. Rush has been saying for several days now that he senses panic in the White House. Bill Maher thinks Obama has over exposed himself, and he is tired of seeing him on tv. Karl Rove last night said the ABC extravaganza in the Blue Room is going to reduce Obama in stature, and make him look average and weak. Rove pointed out that no one has ever used the Blue Room, or the White House for something like a townhall meeting. It would seem El Diablo strongly believes this will backfire on POTUS.
People are going to be forced to engage this go round. The every four years tune in and turn on method is not going to be an option. I think we are going to have to engage those every four year types, and inform them. Conquering ignorance one zombie at a time! It just takes so long, and meanwhile we are swamped with chaos. But that letter Glenn received refutes what both of us were thinking. People are paying attention, and they are slowly but surely coming out of their cocoons of ignorance.

Like Eve in the Garden of Eden, every great thing they touch goes to ruin. They can’t help it, it’s biological. The greatest points to them, regarding a politician are, if male, is he cute & can they fantasize about a date with him, like the Obama/Michelle. If it’s a liberal woman candidate, (they’re always ugly) but they enjoy the lies of “sisterhood”, if a conservative woman, they hate her because she is better looking than them, and opposes they ideals of killing their own kids.

How could a law be valid when it has no president’s signature on it? No valid president refused to veto it also, so how could the law be considered passed?
I asked my senator if there was any tax law besides the one Obama signed, so that if Obama was found to be criminally ineligible for the presidency there would be no tax law for me to have to obey. He wrote back and recommended that I pay my taxes.
Well, duh, but if Obama is not the president, then what real law forces me to pay taxes? Of course if Obama was found out they would pass a new law and make it retroactive, but until they did that, if they tried to prosecute me for tax evasion I would have the right to defend myself using any documents I need – including Obama’s long-form birth certificate.
But that is only the case if we still follow law. The Chrysler situation shows that we can’t count on that. Everything Obama has done from the day he announced his run for president has shown that. And that should be a concern for everybody.

The look on Johnson’s face when he is asked about Walpin’s firing is priceless. Gone is the charismatic smiles and grins, replaced by the “oh shet” doom and gloom look, following by a big gulp.

I looked around to refresh my memory on when President Bush fired 8 U.S. attorneys (no dearth of coverage on that one from what I remember), and that compared to Clinton having fired all 93 when he first took office.

Barry is a bully. I still think he’ll fold like a cheap suit when someone stands up to him and doesn’t back down.

America if we’re not careful here the country is going to find itself in deep CA CA here. I’m sick and tired of hearing we need to give BOBO more time. NO WAY He doesn’t even deserve any respect for what he has done since he took office. The exact opposite in true.
The disrespect comes from his associations in his past. Yes… you can say that doesn’t matter and that’s where I will take exception with you. His past is filled with nothing but questions. Problem is he is not willing to answer any of them and all these young people out here who consider him a Rock star are unwilling to hold his feet to a flame to get answers. Never in the History of Presidential elections has a candidate gotten such a pass. I lived through the sixties and seventies with all its bomb threats, marches and clashes. I served in Vietnam in 69-70 and came back to the BS that was taking place.I know the Weatherman, SLA and Black Panthers. I’m sorry, but the people one associates with DOES matter especially when they are radicals living on the edge, skirting the laws of this nation. I don’t remember(Hell, I’m sixty and I don’t have any problem remembering who I ran around with or what I did) doesn’t cut it with me. This man is going to have to earn my respect.
GOD BLESS AMERICA and ALL WHO SERVE THIS GREAT NATION!!!

Wow! What a broad (no pun intended) brush you paint with here. I assume you don’t mean all the intelligent, well-informed, patrioticconservative women here on HA and in the media.

Getting rid of the watchdogs to make room for lapdogs.
Anyone surprised?
Question is, what can be done about it?

I’m putting that on my wall.
Now if you excuse me, I’m taking a brick with my SU-16 to the firing range.
