Kim Jong-Il to provide Hawaiian fireworks for 4th of July

posted at 2:55 pm on June 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

What could be more American than “bombs bursting in air” on the Fourth of July, Michael Kinsley notwithstanding?  Hawaii may get more Americana than it wants for its Independence Day celebrations, thanks to North Korea’s nutcase dictator, Kim Jong-Il.  Kim has threatened to shoot a long-range ballistic missile at our 50th state, taking provocation to the edge of a cassus belli:

North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July, a Japanese news report said Thursday, as Russia and China urged the regime to return to international disarmament talks on its rogue nuclear program.

The missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers), would be launched from North Korea’s Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast, said the Yomiuri daily, Japan’s top-selling newspaper. It cited an analysis by the Japanese Defense Ministry and intelligence gathered by U.S. reconnaissance satellites.

The missile launch could come between July 4 and 8, the paper said.

While the newspaper speculated the Taepodong-2 could fly over Japan and toward Hawaii, it said the missile would not be able to hit Hawaii’s main islands, which are about 4,500 miles (7,200 kilometers) from the Korean peninsula.

Previous launches of the Taepodong-2 have proven unsuccessful, although incrementally improving, so it’s hard to determine with certainty that it could not hit the Hawaiian archipelago.  Anything launched in that direction, though, would be an act of war, if the US so chose to act on it.  Kim either has a death wish, or he’s taken the measure of Barack Obama and knows that he will suffer few consequences for the launch.

Joe Biden warned the US that dictators would test Obama and create international crises to see how the inexperienced Commander in Chief would respond.  Biden also warned that Obama’s response would look wrong, and that the Left would have to rally to his side.  That was widely interpreted to mean that Obama would simply refuse to respond at all to provocations, but it’s hard to imagine that a missile launch at an American state would get no response at all.

So what will Obama do?  Pretend it didn’t happen, ask for another strongly-worded memo from the UN, or start providing real consequences for Kim’s actions?  Say, perhaps, a test of the missile defense system on any launch from the Korean Peninsula?  So far, the Obama administration has prompted nothing but escalation from Kim, who apparently believes that he’s tested Obama enough and found him wanting.

Obama will never take decisive action. It’s not his style. If fact, if someone did respond decisively to some provocation, Obama would convene a panel of experts to investigate.

Every position he takes has an if — and so — but — or on the other hand. He is John Kerry, just with more words between contradictions. Krauthammer calls it ‘the Obama pivot’.

My bet is Barry will just sit back and HOPE with no CHANGE the missle misses…then calls the UN to complain….when will the cycle ever end?

I am not sure where this article is getting its numbers. The Federation of American scientists estimates the range of the Taepodong II at 9000 kilometers (5592 miles) when fitted with a 1/2 ton payload. U.S. MIRV warheads weigh in at 600 to 800 pounds. So, even with a conservative FAS estimate, Hawaii is well within range of a modern warhead mounted on a Taepodong II. In fact, the FAS estimates that San Francisco is in range.

Do we even have the capability to determine if the missile has been weaponized? Do we have to wait for two or three attempted launches to come to our senses before we take out their silos? Is anyone running the greatest show on earth?

You mean the one that’s unnecessary, according to military expert Private Obama?

NoDonkey on June 18, 2009 at 4:04 PM

Exactly.

====

AK and HI are the youngest states of the union and not part of the contiguous 48 (NOT 55) states. I’m sure most view us as “nice” places to visit and not that important nationally. Still, cutting missile defense (especially now) is just plain backwards.

I’d think that after one test fired this way in 2006, even if it failed miserably, we’d be more vocal. But nope.

I would like to see a bit of escalation on our behalf, but I don’t think blowing the NK rocket up on the launch pad is it.

This what you get when you elect a wimp.

Wouldn’t have to be a nuclear warhead,…chemical or biological would do nicely, although for marketing purposes I suppose the madman would like to show off his big thunder for those interested in buying such things. We tend to make black humor about this, but this guy is seriously unstable and worries me a lot.

Actually what’s Kim really going to do. I’ll bet there’s at least 2 LA Class attack subs parked off their coast right now.

Interestingly,

the word “dong” (where the “D” is pronounced with more of a “T” sound)

…means “sh*t” in Korean.

Let the wordplay continue!

/wife is Korean

He isn’t suicidal(I hope). I’m more worried about operator or mechanical error leading to a catastrophic event. Even without a warhead, what happens if he accidently dumps a missle on U.S. territory? Actually, if it didn’t cause casualties, that might be a good thing and force some action. About time for some serious a$$ kicking, I think. He’ll just keep pushing the envelope, otherwise.

I worry about the Kid Kim, myself. Could be as bad as good ol’e Kim Dad.

Wasn’t it the Patriot4 missile system we sent to Japan? It would be great practice for them to shoot that puppy down after it crosses over them. Once it’s off the pad it should be fair game for anyone to have a go at.

Eagles Dominion on June 18, 2009 at 4:51 PM

Enough plutonium for 6 missiles! Yes.

Range? Yes.

Boat receiving orders from mad pot bellied dictator about to keel over, and he also has short man disease. CHECK!

In the immortal words of Daffy Duck, “Shoot it NOW!, SHOOT IT NOW! In the name of sheer decency I demand you shoot it now!” (after out of Chinese waters)

I am not in Alaska. I am not in Hawaii. I am not in the military. I do not have a degree in foreign studies. I did not attend Harvard Law School. But I DO NOT need any of those factors in order to understand this is a real danger. For you freaks who do not get it. Leave.
