katiejane~ Sorry if I misinterpreted you. I’ve come to believe that you are only as old as you feel. My students call me ma’am, my kids call me Mom, and my husband calls me Babe. I don’t feel old, I feel respected and loved. Boxer’s problem is that she has no respect for herself, so she has to find it artificially. People who are very secure don’t feel the need to excoriate others in service of their own egos.

In defense of Boxer, who is indeed, sometimes bitchy…if you don’t live in the South being called ‘Ma’am’ is considered derogatory by most women. I have lived in the south for a great deal of my adult life and still find the term offensive because of the intonation that comes along with its use.

Women hit an age where being called Maam makes them feel old – it’s a verbal acknowledgement that they no longer qualify to be called Miss, Sweetie, Honey, or Babe.

Speak for yourself. I work in a large Southern university, where I am frequently addressed as ma’am. I love it. My students offer me respect and a civil classroom environment in which to work. Regretably, I cannot say as much for my colleagues who assume everyone in academia to be liberal; I am frequently subjected to conservative bashing. One of my gay colleagues even suggested that it would be great if Crawford, Texas were wiped out by an earthquake. I cannot imagine the howl that would go up if I suggested the same fate for San Francisco. So, if my students call me ma’am, I’m thrilled.

As a PhD I use the title Dr. to let those I am dealing with to know where they stand in the relationship. Those who wish to claim they are my friend or are intimately close will be reminded the title is Dr. Those who I allow into my personal space know when to use the title.

Methinks Boxer is unsure of herself and her position and needs the reinforcement for her self-esteem. From what I’ve seen and heard of Barbara Boxer, I don’t think I would have even addressed her as Ma’am. The position deserves the respect but when it’s occupied by someone as unworthy as her, the position has become cheapened and sullied.

Any statemen, gentlemen or genteel women left in the halls of congress?

It’s a violation of the UCMJ for active-duty servicemen & women to insult the President or Congresspeople (”things” in Boxer’s case)

You know how on the History Channel in the newsreels bakc in the day they would always show FDR standing up or sitting in his car, taking great pains to never show the public that he was handicapped. It was a great big con played on the American people. His polio was never common knowledge with the public in his time.

Senator Boxer is the beneficiary of a simular con being played on the public by conniving press…
The girl is only 4′11″ tall, but you would never know it by her CSPAN bits. They have a special box, the Boxer box they call it, that she has to stand on to reach the top of a podium. It’s due to basic dishonesty from the jump, that you are unaware of this fact.
Could you imagine the press core going to such lengths to hide what amounts to an infirmity for the sake of the Senator’s vanity if there were an (R) behind her name?
