Audio: DeMint goes nuclear on Boxer for getting snotty with general

From today’s “America’s Morning News” with John McCaslin and Melanie Morgan, a stark reminder that the conservative base’s favorite senator has never let collegiality keep him from speaking his mind. Quoth a Politico profile in January:
DeMint, up for reelection in 2010, is genial by nature and says he tried to work within the Capitol’s seniority system during his three terms in the House and his first two years in the Senate.
But he has learned, he said, that lawmakers in both parties “only respond to pain.”
“They don’t respond to good policy, persuasion, being nice. I’ve tried it all,” he said. “There’s nobody nicer than I am.”
In a chamber where relationship building is seen as paramount to legislative successes, DeMint said that “club friendships [have become] more important than the party and where we’re going as a country.”
No worries about any club friendships with Her Royal Highness after this, I’d imagine. Exit question: What does he mean when he says the military pays America’s civilian leadership a “courtesy” by showing deference to them?

Very simple…
That General does NOT work for the Senate, he works for the PRESIDENT, throught the Joint Cheifs.
Boxer is NOT in his Chain of Command, so he is COURTEOUS to speak to her in that manner…

As Mark Twain said, “Good breeding consists of concealing how much we think of ourselves and how little we think of the other person.” Boxer never got that memo. Classless, clueless and not qualified to be a brassiere saleswoman. Excuse me, a brassiere salessenator.
Kalifornia Kafir on June 18, 2009 at 5:25 PM
By Showing “deference to her” he is showing respect for her position although he probably would rather say “liberal, USA hating hagg”.
farright on June 18, 2009 at 5:26 PM
A Senator is not in the chain of command. My understanding is that there is nothing requiring the General to address Boxer as either “Senator” or “ma’am”, and he could have simply answered without either form of address.
Instead, he chose to address a member of the civilian government with the same military courtesy offered to a superior officer.
At least, that’s my take on it, but I was just a lower enlisted punk who got out 20 years ago.
malclave on June 18, 2009 at 5:26 PM
I think the best response the BGen could have given to that snotty b*tch would have been “Yes, ma’am.”

Women hit an age where being called Maam makes them feel old – it’s a verbal acknowledgement that they no longer qualify to be called Miss, Sweetie, Honey, or Babe.

What is it about California Women who are in a position of power? Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, etc… My brother and his wife live in California, and she acts just like that. Wants to be addressed in a certain way, by a certain name, or else, but she can call you by any name she wants. It’s my way or the highway!

A primer on this subject for all those who’ve not had the benefit of a military education, either in an academy or in the less exalted military school of hard knocks:
A) “Ma’am” is the proper form of address when dealing with a female individual of higher rank than oneself.
Example 1: (Enlisted person of any sex or grade to any female commissioned or warranted officer) “Yes, ma’am” or “No, ma’am”.
Example 2: (As a corollary, enlisted person of any sex or grade to any male commissioned or warranted officer) “Yes, sir” or “No, sir”.
B) Referring to a person by rank is generally done when the person being referred to is of a lower rank than oneself.
Example 3: (In reply, also as a corollary, officer of any sex or grade to any enlisted person of any sex or grade or to any officer at a lower rank than themselves) “Yes, sergeant” or “No, lieutenant”.
C) One is obliged by military courtesy and tradition to refer to any general officer of either sex as “general”.
Example 4: (Senator or mere mortal, enlisted, officer or civilian to a general officer, serving or retired, of whatever rank [count the stars]) “Yes, general”. (Note: the same holds true for admirals, substituting the word “admiral” for “general”.)
D) Any commoner of whatever country is expected to refer to the Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as “Ma’am” after having once referred to her as “Your Majesty”.
Example 5: (The President of the United States to the Queen) “Yes, Your Majesty”, followed the rest of the day by “Yes (or no), Ma’am”. She replies with “Yes (or no), Mr. President”.
…so, that’s quite the powerful word, that “ma’am”.
…it would appear that the shriveled old persimmon from California, in her ignorance of the subject her position gives her the power to judge, would prefer to be referred as a sexless elected apparachnik.
…so, bitchy feminism isn’t dead.
…and, as long as we’re on the subject, all she had to do to gain the title of “Senator” was win an election, which in the present degraded state of our electoral politics means that she had to either win or buy what amounts to an ideological beauty contest…and, in California, a left-wing wing-nut like Boxer has a safe seat.
On the other hand, any service shavetail (lieutenant or ensign) have a generation of service and higher education, bullet-dodging and mentoring, not to mention politicking, ahead of them before they get to be a flag officer (general or admiral). That’s after the academy, ROTC, or whatever path they took just to show up at the party with a commission.
Along the way, experience shows that pissing off one rating officer (someone responsible for signing or endorsing ones efficiency reports, a periodic ordeal involving ones superiors publishing the general worth of an officer) can call the whole process to a halt. Count the number of serving officers in a branch of the service, then count the number of general officers in that service, and simple mathematics can inform one of the attrition rate among ambitious young military leaders.
So, I’d stack the achievements of any general officer, no matter how “Colonel Blimp”-y up against those of any senator, congressman, or high potentate in the Executive Branch, appointed solon in the Executive Branch or embalmed specimen in the Judiciary any day of the week.
So…you go, Brigadier. Let it run off your back. You’ve served your fellow Americans. Boxer’s only served America as an example to us all of the arrogance of wealth and position.

I think Sen. DeMint had it right. To be called “Ma’am ” is high praise, especially so when compared to “Senator” or “Congressman.” Has Sen. Boxer noticed any of the polls showing what the low regard of the American people toward politicians in general, and Congress in particular?
.
Her remarks remind me of the story of the father who, when asked what his son did for a living, always replied that he was a piano player in a whorehouse. He was just too embarrassed and ashamed to tell them the truth, that his son was a lawyer. If Sen. Boxer doesn’t want to be called “Ma’am” then that’s her prerogative, but if I were her, I think I would prefer “Ma’am” or “Whorehouse Piano Player” to “Senator.” But to each her own, I suppose.
Harrell on June 18, 2009 at 5:43 PM
Boxer is a walking argument for term limits. The longer they are there, the more they forget they are “public servants”.
It takes more work to become a Brigadier General than it does Senator.
pgrossjr on June 18, 2009 at 5:43 PM
In defense of Boxer, who is indeed, sometimes bitchy…if you don’t live in the South being called ‘Ma’am’ is considered derogatory by most women. I have lived in the south for a great deal of my adult life and still find the term offensive because of the intonation that comes along with its use.

Any time I’ve had the honor of a military person calling me Ma’am or holding a door open for me, it’s about brought me to tears – especially at airports when they’re either leaving or coming home from Iraq or Afghanistan.
Many of these fine young men/women didn’t have the upbringing at home to learn the skills of politeness, but the military instills a code of conduct that is amazing.
If The Boxer has a son, I’m guessing he wouldn’t hold the door open for anyone, even his mother.

Got this letter yesterday via e-mail. Evidently, Jim DeMint not only honors those in the military, but those conservative candidates fighting for positions in the Republican primaries as well. Hand Salute Senator!
Dear Bill,
Once there was a poor farmer who wanted to become fabulously rich in the diamond trade. He deserted his farmland and traveled the world looking for diamonds until he was too old to look anymore. He returned home penniless, only to discover that the fields around his home were thick with flawless diamonds as big as your fist.
The poor guy’s fortune had been right under his nose, but he had wasted his whole life looking everywhere but in his own backyard.
That old story came back to me a few weeks ago when I met Marco Rubio. He’s the 38-year old former speaker of the Florida House of Representatives running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Mel Martinez next year. Rubio is the most impressive conservative leader I have met in a long time, a natural leader with an inspiring personal story and an even more inspiring vision for Florida and America.
He is at once a principled conservative and an accomplished legislator with a proven record of building broad coalitions to champion fiscal discipline, economic growth, and the American values of family, faith, and freedom.
For months now, Republicans have been looking around, asking everyone they meet who our next leaders will be. And somehow, inexplicably, many of us have grown blind to the diamonds all around us. There are already many young, conservative leaders ready to fight for freedom in Washington and in state capitals all around the country. But we’ll never find them if we only look for well-known politicians or choose our party’s
Rubio is the son of Cuban exiles, who fled to the United States in the late 1950s without a dollar in their pocket. He tells inspiring stories about the neighborhoods where he grew up, and how America empowered his family to make a life for themselves. Rubio did rise: to college and law school, to the City Commission in West Miami to the legislature, all the way to the speaker’s chair. From each of these positions, Rubio has championed a positive, principled, conservative agenda as the best way to create jobs and opportunities. He is living the American Dream, and understands how much he owes to our Founders and their principles of personal liberty and limited government. He wants to serve because he wants to protect those principles – when Marco Rubio swears an oath to our constitution, he’s one of those politicians who will actually mean it.
Everywhere he has gone, Rubio has stood up to liberal ideas and interest groups, and stood up for freedom. He has taken on daunting issues – from a statewide education curriculum to energy reform – and succeeded in persuading independents and Democrats that his ideas – innovative, conservative solutions – make for the best answers to our biggest challenges.
He is exactly the kind of Senator Florida needs, and exactly the kind of leader our party is looking for: a conservative’s conservative with a record of success in a swing state, a self-made first generation American, a dynamic Republican spokesman in two languages, a young husband and father himself dealing with the same problems middle class families like his face every day.
There is no question Marco Rubio will be a big part of the Republican Party’s future, but I believe if we are to defeat the forces of Big Government now controlling Washington, Marco Rubio needs to be a big part of the Republican Party’s present. He has the skills and ideas we need to rebuild our party, reform our government, and renew our nation.
That’s why Marco Rubio will have my full support in his upcoming election.

Yep, and then those same typical older women eventually find themselves bitter and alone in their 70’s with two dozen cats and wonder why the have no friends or family.
First of all military personnel address all their superiors as sir or maam so the General was only following the protocol he knows, maam senator biatch should have known that and just let it go but because she has such a fragile ego and chip on her shoulder she had to open her pie hole and thus exposed her for what she really is, an insecure military hating bitter old biatch!
Boxer has been and always will be a POS and is unworthy of being given any respect from a ditch digger let alone a General!

Here are some links on military courtesies. Now,, at some point, these policies would have had to been approved also by the congress itself. Senator Boxer, by criticizing this General for following congressional approved policies, was signifying that she is above the traditions, customs and policies of military courtesies. What really makes me mad,, this was more than just an ignorant, filthy, snub to a General. That is disgusting enough. Her act, though, was to place herself above the traditional policies and military customs that would have been approved by the US congress. She was saying, “Hey buddy,, don’t address me as is allowed by policy. I am above that! I am above the traditions and normal courtesies that have always been allowed. You will address me only as Senator!”
Here are some links: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/7-21-13/chap4.htm
“4-18. A soldier addressing a higher ranking officer uses the word sir or ma’am in the same manner as a polite civilian speaking with a person to whom he wishes to show respect. In the military service, the matter of who says sir or ma’am to whom is clearly defined; in civilian life it is largely a matter of discretion. In the case of NCOs and soldiers, we address them by their rank because they’ve earned that rank.”

What’s funny is that General has more time in uniform than the idiot from Kahli-forn-e-uh. Ooooh, she worked hard. Doing what? Every six years she puts on the crypt keeper smile and says whatever she has to to get reelected.
The General has survived annual officer evaluations, annual readiness evaluations, reductions in force, and WAR. But yeah, she’s worked hard to “earn” her title.

This reminds me of the classic Seinfeld episode “The Maestro,” guest starring the brilliant character actor Mark Metcalf (best remembered as the preppy pissant Doug Niedermayer in Animal House) as Bob Cobb, a small-time ensemble conductor who insists on being called “Maestro.”
After he swept Elaine off her feet in their first meeting, he and she are dining together on their first date (original transcription by SeinfeldScripts.com).
Later on, the Maestro gives Elaine a ride in his sports car and cranks up the Verdi. They sing “Finiculi, Finicula” together. It has the desired effect on her, and she winds up in his apartment.
Unfortunately, there is no video of the entire scene I can link to, and what there is online was from a camcorder shooting a TV showing the episode. The audio is English, but there are subtitles in a language I can’t identify. The beginning of the scene can be found here, starting at 0:50.
Perhaps someone with the Seinfeld DVD set could mash up the Boxer & Maestro clips and post it.

I think it pretty much means how I have always felt. That Generals going to Congress to let them know what they are doing is just a courtesy. Congress isn’t going to tell them how to do their job, or even give their opinion because Generals really don’t care.
Its the old attitude. “Tell me where to fight and stay out of my way.” They would rather not have to leave the field in order to “brief” these civilians but do it as a “courtesy”.

Whoa, shipmate. Most civilians I’ve encountered are happy to learn about military protocol. I’m sure the Star-Trib blows as much as any newsrag, but it’s not “the American people.” They’re mostly a stand-up bunch.
Retired military (like John Kline) are not “ex-” whatever, they still hold their rank but are no longer active. A retired Sea Service member is in the Fleet Reserve.
“Ex-” being 3 characters as opposed to 7 for “retired,” copy editors may well choose to use it for space considerations, even if they know better.

Really?
When I got out of the Army, I got a job at a local hospital in the lab. One of my duties was to draw blood in the E.R. Out of habit, I routinely addressed the nurses and doctors as “sir” or “ma’am”, even the nurses who were about the same age as myself (at least while at work).
I not only never heard a complaint, my supervisor told me that some of the nurses had commented about how polite I was.

In the military Superiors are addresses as “Sir” or “Ma’am”. Equals and subordinates are address by Tile and Name.
When the General address her as “Ma’am” he acknowledged that she OUT rank him. That SHE is his Superior.
By demanding the General to address her as “Senator” she placed herself on equal or subordinate level as the General.
It is actually disrespectful for a member of the military to address her as “Senator”.
To say this SENATOR is a dumb as a box of rocks is disrespectful to rocks and boxes.

You are not worth your own weight in dog crap. I hope your kidneys fail and you suffer a long and painful disease that breaks the hearts of all those people twisted enough to give two sh1ts about your miserable existence.
Elections have consequences you disgusting piece of crap, and so do words. If you were on fire I wouldn’t pee on you.
God Bless our troops.

DO NOT WRITE Barbara Boxer with ANYTHING that resembles critisism, you WILL receive a visit from federal law enforcement.
As for Babs, I’ll call her Barbabra to her face, on the floor of the Senate or anywhere else. Boxer is MY employee and nothing more and she deserves LESS respect that anyone who works for me.
nelsonknows on June 19, 2009 at 1:23 AM
Demint, nuclear? C’mon, if you want to see REAL nuclear, let ME have a shot at talking to Boxer…I’ll make her CRY.
nelsonknows on June 19, 2009 at 1:25 AM
It has been said above, ma’am, but you are clueless about courtesy, manners, and respect if you believe that the word ma’am is offensive. This coming from an ex GI born in Southern CA, and currently in MN. Both ma’am and sir are ingrained deeply when you are in the military, and I have never, in the 20 years since I got out, had someone tell me they were offended at being called by either term. I am puzzled as to why the term does offend you? Are you shamed about being addressed as a lady?
coyoterex on June 19, 2009 at 2:00 AM
WOW! Golly gee!
WTF does your living in the south have to do with “the rules and regs of Military Protocol”?
DSchoen on June 19, 2009 at 4:38 AM
LOL!
That’s not the only thing.
Have you ever noticed that when you are walking with someone else that was in the military, that BOTH of you are “In Step”.

that was not remotely what I’d ever call nuclear. no wonder we clash!

It is one thing to link your blog at the end of a reasonable post. It’s another thing to post something totally false and then plug yourself as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Senator Boxer is on the way out God willing.
The Sacramento media is trying to promote another airhead as her replacement, the girl who tried her damnest to run Hewlett Packard into the ground.
Don’t let them do it.
Fellow Californias don’t let the media pick our next Senator.
It will only lead to furter embarassment.
Chuck Devore wants that job. He is qualified. He is competent. And Lord knows as a Republican serving in the California Assembly and Senate he has the bruses to show for it.
Boxer is a transplanted New Yorker. She landed in Marin on her ambulance chasing hubbies shirt tails. Created her own booster “charity” organization, and coincidentally benefitted as it’s favorite charitable recipient, riding that org into a supervisor seat, then disbanding it (another Dem community activist who throws allies under the bus when they have outlived their usefulness to her – check her Wiki) shortly after she won a House seat in Washington.
Let’s make her Senator NFL – as in Not For Long.

Senator Boxer is the polar opposite of a public servant.
She is what I call a self servant.
papertiger on June 19, 2009 at 8:14 AM
You know how on the History Channel in the newsreels bakc in the day they would always show FDR standing up or sitting in his car, taking great pains to never show the public that he was handicapped. It was a great big con played on the American people. His polio was never common knowledge with the public in his time.
Senator Boxer is the beneficiary of a simular con being played on the public by conniving press…
The girl is only 4′11″ tall, but you would never know it by her CSPAN bits. They have a special box, the Boxer box they call it, that she has to stand on to reach the top of a podium. It’s due to basic dishonesty from the jump, that you are unaware of this fact.
Could you imagine the press core going to such lengths to hide what amounts to an infirmity for the sake of the Senator’s vanity if there were an (R) behind her name?
Not For Long.

Your post reminds me of this old joke…
Boxer: How do you propose to run this campaign?
General: This is the plan we are going to go with…
Boxer: Could I just say, please don’t end a sentance with a preposition? It’s just incorrect grammer.
General: OK. This is the plan we are going to go with, asshat.
DrAllecon on June 19, 2009 at 8:35 AM
When will the democrats understand that their leaders are elitists who look upon them as subjects to be cajoled for their amusement. Boxer’s rebuke of the general to soothe her insatiable ego suggests nothing else.
volsense on June 19, 2009 at 8:50 AM
It’s a violation of the UCMJ for active-duty servicemen & women to insult the President or Congresspeople (”things” in Boxer’s case)
If you remember the 2004 campaign where John Kerry harassed two Marines minding their own business at a Wendy’s, they stood to attention and restrained their undoubted natural urge to go “Jengis Khan” on his filthy fascist fundament.

No, please. Just courtesy in return. We are the US Armed Forces, not the Praetorian Guard or the Janisarries.

Methinks Boxer is unsure of herself and her position and needs the reinforcement for her self-esteem. From what I’ve seen and heard of Barbara Boxer, I don’t think I would have even addressed her as Ma’am. The position deserves the respect but when it’s occupied by someone as unworthy as her, the position has become cheapened and sullied.
Any statemen, gentlemen or genteel women left in the halls of congress?
iamsaved on June 19, 2009 at 9:57 AM
Boxer is STILL angry at the military. As a 20 year old she made extra money “servicing” the fleet. When she once serviced an Army guy, and he stiffed her, she’s been angry ever since.

As a PhD I use the title Dr. to let those I am dealing with to know where they stand in the relationship. Those who wish to claim they are my friend or are intimately close will be reminded the title is Dr. Those who I allow into my personal space know when to use the title.

Speak for yourself. I work in a large Southern university, where I am frequently addressed as ma’am. I love it. My students offer me respect and a civil classroom environment in which to work. Regretably, I cannot say as much for my colleagues who assume everyone in academia to be liberal; I am frequently subjected to conservative bashing. One of my gay colleagues even suggested that it would be great if Crawford, Texas were wiped out by an earthquake. I cannot imagine the howl that would go up if I suggested the same fate for San Francisco. So, if my students call me ma’am, I’m thrilled.
College Prof on June 19, 2009 at 10:41 AM
I must admit she’s got a harder job than many Senators. I’m sure many ethnic politicians in the Sacramento machine wonder why the shoo-in has to go to TWO white women, and one of them being a goofball by California standards.
Chris_Balsz on June 19, 2009 at 10:46 AM
I’m not in disagreement with you. I should have qualified my previous comment as:
SOME women hit an age where being called Maam makes them feel old
katiejane on June 19, 2009 at 11:01 AM
Ya’ll need to take chill pill! I am a California refuge living in the south and I have yet to see to what your talking about!
Boxer needs to be dumped unceremoniously on her azz the next election cycle, she has become a socialist royalty elitist.
grapeknutz on June 19, 2009 at 11:12 AM
LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL.
LOL. LOL. LOL. LOL.
How’s life in Berkley where all polite terms are considered offensive with negative undertones?
Do you get angry when a man holds the door for you? Should he hold it shut and make you struggle to open it while calling you Senator?
Rogue Traveler on June 19, 2009 at 11:18 AM
Go get her Jim, and thanks for the tip that the US Treasury has never been audited and the measures to do so have been stopped by the Democrats…. what are they hiding.. maybe some sticky fingers, maybe there really isn’t any money there? Keep on pushin Jim Demint..
