Hillary demands settlement closure in Israel, but not freedom in Iran

posted at 10:55 am on June 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Under any other circumstances, this press conference with Hillary Clinton and Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman would be a national embarrassment.  In the Obama administration, it’s just business as usual.  While Hillary demanded an end to settlement expansion in the presser and gave a not-so-subtle scolding to Lieberman and by extension Benjamin Netanyahu, the most she could bring herself to say about Iran was that the US wanted to work with them, and that free speech is a good thing.

The Financial Times called it “one of the most tense encounters” of the last several years between Israel and the US, and for good reason:

Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, clashed face to face with her Israeli counterpart on Wednesday as the two countries remained at loggerheads over the expansion of settlements in occupied territory.

In what appeared one of the most tense encounters between the sides for several years, Mrs Clinton and Avigdor Lieberman, Israel’s foreign minister, disagreed on both the US call for a complete freeze on settlement growth and Israel’s contention that the administration of George W. Bush, the former president, had signalled that some expansion was permissible.

“We cannot accept this vision about absolutely, completely freezing all settlements,” Mr Lieberman said.

In response, Mrs Clinton underlined the US call for a “stop to the settlements”, a move she described as “an important and essential part of pursuing the efforts leading to a comprehensive peace agreement”.

The US seems a bit lost in this hyperfocus on settlements.  Settlements are not the main cause of the conflict; they are an issue to be handled in final negotiations, like Jerusalem and borders, once both sides accept the other and have security measures in place to stop attacks.  Rudely demanding in a press conference that Israel unilaterally concede on settlements without any concessions at all from the Palestinians or other Arab states is not only amateurish diplomacy, it’s just flat-out useless.  Israel dismantled the settlements in Gaza and withdrew, and that not only failed to improve the situation, it created a terrorist state of Hamastan in Gaza, which has launched attacks almost non-stop against Israel ever since.  Does the Obama administration read the newspapers at all?

While Hillary scolds our democratic ally, she soothes the repressive mullahcracy that is threatened by an uprising of its own people, demanding real democracy for the first time in decades.  The best she can offer for the Iranian protestors is a sop to free speech and an acknowledgment that ballots should be counted fairly.  Click the image to watch, and to read more reaction from Israel Matzav.

HH: We have two minutes. I want to ask you two questions. What do you want the President to say? And would you welcome an Israeli strike in the middle of this turmoil in order to reduce that nuclear threat?

CH: If you don’t mind me answering the question in reverse order, I’m not ducking it, there would be no distinction made by the Iranians or anyone else between an Israeli strike or a strike made by ourselves, because they’d have to cross at least Iraqi and possibly Turkish airspace to do it at all, and that’s quite different from their attack on Iran…excuse me, on Iraq. I’m terribly sorry, in ’81 where they only had to cross Jordanian airspace to get there. So there would be, it would be a distinction without a difference.

HH: Do you want Israel to do it?

CH: And until we’ve solved the rest of the differences between ourselves and the Israeli government on other matters, I think it’s absurd to expect them, or even want them to be our proxy in a grave matter like this. No, we’d have to take responsibility. We would say we’re enforcing the U.N. and IAEA prohibition on Iran weaponizing its nuclear facilities.

HH: Okay, so what do you want the President to say, Christopher Hitchens?

CH: Well, I think that should be clearly threatened. We say we know now that every single agreement has been broken between you and your people in Iran, and between your government and every other government in treaties in which you are a signatory. Our patience is absolutely not limitless. And I as president, as candidate, the President should say, did say that a nuclearized theocracy in Iran is not permissible. He’s already committed himself to that. What I meant by that was to say it wouldn’t be permitted. Once you said this kind of thing, once you’ve willed the end, you have willed the means. Or, you can take it back.

Closure of the settlements is essential – for the easy deployment of more missile launchers. How can Israel be wiped off the map if they refuse to go quietly?

The Obama regime can’t wait for Iran to get its bomb up to scratch: action must be taken now, while he’s still in power. 2014 is just too far away.

The Lefty’s comeback essentially was it’s okay to meddle in the affairs of allies but not enemies. That’s quintessentially Lefty logic in a nutshell.

Hopefully, there are enough people with functioning brains who will see this and conclude – finally – that this administration, and really the entire Demorat party, view the Israeli – Palestinian relationship from only one angle: Israel Bad, Palestinians Victim.

Iran is just another victim of U.S. meddling. A free Iraq is just a mirage created by the murders of 1 million innocent Iraqis by Bush and his puppets in the U.S. military. The Palestinians would be fine if Israel didn’t build houses in the settlements, or businesses in Gaza. Blah, blah, blah.

I have been dumstruck for years about the conventional wisdom that there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between the parties on Israel. That’s just stupid. Of course there is.

I might add that there are serious thinkers on both the Right and Left (mostly on the Left) who believe a tiny Israel without Jerusalem really is the ultimate solution that will bring lasting peace to the Mideast and allow the U.S. to withdraw from the region entirely. They think talk of a second Holocaust and wiping Israel off the map is just bluster in the face of the Israeli military colossus.

rockmom on June 18, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Laura in Maryland on June 18, 2009 at 11:41 AM

What everyone seems to be missing here is that the Obama administration has made a clear choice: They believe that the United States’ national security rests with pleasing the Arab states on the Palestinian issue, and therefore making Israel the scapegoat. This choice might have been made under threats by the Oil Barron gulf states to bring down the US in a financial war if their conditions aren’t met. One wonders if Lieberman would have stood next to SoS Clinton if there wasn’t a tacit agreement between the two governments to “play it this way” publically, while behind the scenes the two nations plot a joint course. The alternative thought, that Obama actually thinks this path of diplomacy is sound with Secretary Clinton’s mindlessly going along with it, is too ghastly a thought to even think about.

As to Iran, it appears that only Israel gets it.

Obama promised to protect him from whatever may come from Fitzgerald in exchange for keeping mum on Israel?

Possible, I guess, but I suspect it’s something else. Given his Israeli background, his father’s role in the Irgun, I find this confusing. If he’s what he appears to be, how much further can he go along with this. And if he goes further, he’s not likely to be what he appears to be.

I’m afraid the ghastly scenario it is.

Rahm was raised by his wacko-commie mother. He is no friend of Israel and no friend of the US. He fits perfectly with the Traitor-in-Chief.

A note about Rahm Emanuel…underreported is the longterm hatefest between Emanuel and Bibi Netanyahu.

While we are endangering Israel, why don’t we start trading weapons, oil and food to North Korea to make a point to South Korea and Japan that as our allies, their security is meaningless.

If I were Israel, I’d just go ahead and picture Obama & Hillary in brown army uniforms with swastikas. Obama is the one with the little mustache.

was Saul Alinsky an anti-semite?

Of all places, you’d think they would “Never Forget”.

Mark Steyn noted that when Israel falls, the west will fall. We’re half-way there.

Laura in Maryland on June 18, 2009 at 11:41 AM

And as Mark Steyn would point out, the change in demographics in Europe has changed “never forget” to “finish the job”.
