Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on June 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

CNN gives us today’s Obamateurism, via Mary Katharine Ham and Patty Ann at The Hostages. Barack Obama seems confused about right and left, and coming and going, in this clip from yesterday’s Rose Garden appearance with South Korean president Lee Myung-bak:

After holding a bilateral meeting in the Oval office with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, the two leaders walked out to the Rose Garden podiums. That’s when the left-right two-step happened. Mr. Obama took his place behind the right podium, leaving President Lee a bit confused. He smiled as Obama realized the mistake and switched to the left podium.

That oops moment alone wouldn’t have deserved a write-up, but for the fact that there was more confusion after the press availability. After thanking reporters, Obama and Lee turned and walked back toward the Oval Office. Oops again!

Glenn Reynolds gets the final zinger, a masterful play on words:

It’s like Bush never left! Er, right?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at [email protected] with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

It’s just his .. bipartisan statesmannership, the false choice of having to chose .

C’mon, now, it’s not like Dear Leader walked into an Oval Office window. Oh wait, he did.

JiangxiDad on June 17, 2009 at 8:14 AM

Wow. He has no idea where he’s going, let alone what he’s doing. Pressure getting to him a little, you think?

Clueless about everything. Just an empty suit.

Mr. Obama took his place behind the right podium, leaving President Lee a bit confused

This is actually President Lee’s error…Orrogance is never wrong…President Lee should have graciously stepped to the left podium…

Why do I think the little mistakes like this keep him up at night but the big gross errors of judgement in leadership lull him to sleep like a baby.

sherry on June 17, 2009 at 8:19 AM

He is so used to being the center of attention when giving a speech that he obviously gets all confused when he has to share the podium with another head of state.

“Hey um why are there two um ah podiums up here? oh that’s um right this Korean guy is um ah up here as well.”

Dreadnought223 on June 17, 2009 at 8:19 AM

No wonder Ogabe was confused, neither podium had a teleprompter to home-in on.

To me, this is really the only issue. I make mistakes, head the wrong direction, etc., and we have to be able to laugh it off. But the Left made it a point to allow Mr. Bush no errors–every single one was used to point to his intellectual inferiority. Now, they demonstrate that President Obama is charmingly human–or perhaps more accurately, that he’s possibly only a demigod.

DrMagnolias on June 17, 2009 at 8:24 AM

A better Obamateurism would have been O’s whimpering about the vast FoxNews conspiracy against him. He once again showed himself to be terribly petty & childish.

KS Rex on June 17, 2009 at 8:25 AM

When somebody shifts sides as quickly and as often as Barry does, it’s bound to make him ‘disoriented and confused.’

Even so, I’d have picked his blatantly violating the very same law on firing IG’s that Barry sponsored as a Senator for today’s OOTD.

AZCoyote on June 17, 2009 at 8:26 AM

Looks to me to be the actions of a person who is in way over his head. A person who has more things coming at him than he is able to cope with and who is not concentrating on the task at hand because he is in a perpetual state of confusion.

I’d be too – regardless of policy

Since he was elected, has he done anything that is even remotley presidential? Has he carried himself presidentially? Does he have any policies that are good for the US? Is there anything that he has done or said that is uniquely American? Has he ever been inspiring? Has he ever shown that first bit of patriotism? Has he ever spoken of Freedom?
Think about it.

Bishop on June 17, 2009 at 8:38 AM

The lead-in to the story from CNN …….

(CNN) — President Obama is so busy these days dealing with pressing foreign policy issues like Iran and North Korea, that he can’t seem to tell his right from his left.

That’s rich, CNN. Busy doing nothing, and that confused him.

We all know how they would’ve reported this if Bush had done the same thing ……. “not only does he not know how to run a war, he can’t tell his left from his right.”

Notice how BO touches the South Korean President on the back as they exit? BO does this kind of touching frequently with all manner of national and world leaders, no doubt as a way of casually posturing a top-dog position. Makes my skin crawl seeing it.

Normally, these kind of gaffes would be overlooked, or saved for some out-take
collection shown at a party. However, our Gadfly in Chief makes such an effort to be omnipresent in our lives, it’s more startling when he doesn’t appear to know his own podium or how to find his way back into his own house with a prominent guest.
