Obama playing hardball on Walpin as key Dem calls foul

posted at 9:28 am on June 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The Obama administration went into hardball mode in its quest to rid itself of a troublesome Inspector General and to protect a sweetheart deal for a political ally.  The White House sent a letter to Congress last night that accused Gerald Walpin of senility in all but name, alleging that Walpin had been confused and disoriented at a key meeting.  However, that hardly fits with the manner in which the Obama administration attempted to push Walpin out of his post:

“Mr. Walpin was removed after a review was unanimously requested by the bi-partisan Board of the Corporation,” Obama ethics counsel Norm Eisen wrote in a letter to senators Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Susan Collins (R-Me.), with a copy directed to McCaskill. “The Board’s action was precipitated by a May 20, 2009 Board meeting at which Mr. Walpin was confused, disoriented, unable to answer questions and exhibited other behavior that led the Board to question his capacity to serve.”

“We further learned that Mr. Walpin had been absent from the Corporation’s headquarters, insisting upon working from his home in New York over the objections of the Corporation’s Board; that he had exhibited a lack of candor in providing material information to decision makers; and that he had engaged in other troubling and inappropriate conduct,” Eisen wrote. …

Reached at his home in New York Tuesday night, Walpin called the allegations in the Eisen letter “absolutely amazing.”

“Anybody who’s heard me speaking more than I’m used to speaking on radio and TV in recent days, obviously under great pressure from what happened would clearly know that I know what I’m saying and what I’m doing and I’m not incoherent,” Walpin told POLITICO. “There’s nothing confusing about malfeasance and there’s nothing confusing about what appears to be the fact that they terminated me because I was doing my job because the White House wanted to protect people who proclaim they are friends of the White House.”

Let’s unwind the timeline a bit to test this new allegation.  Walpin pressed hard to prosecute Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson for defrauding the government over more than $400,000 in community service grants.  Johnson, an Obama supporter, got a deal from the White House that allowed him to manage federal funds again and avoid paying back at least half of the grant money he used illegally.  The White House cut Walpin out of those negotiations, and Walpin went to Congress about it.

At that point, the White House called Walpin and told him he had an hour to resign or be fired.  Now, if the White House thought that Walpin was somehow incapacitated or disoriented, why bother to make that call at all?  In fact, wouldn’t an employer with an ounce of empathy send the employee to a physician for diagnosis first?  Even without the empathy, the proper course would have been to address the issue with Congress first instead of making an intimidation attempt to someone the White House now paints as all but senile.

This is nothing more than a bare-knuckled smear job, a despicable attempt to use allegations of mental illness to discredit someone who ran afoul of Barack Obama for taking the independence of his job seriously.  That may play in Chicago, and it used to play in Moscow, but it shouldn’t play in Washington DC and America.

Senator Claire McCaskill became the first Democrat in Congress to demand a better explanation:

“The White House has failed to follow the proper procedure in notifying Congress as to the removal of the Inspector General for the Corporation for National and Community Service.  The legislation which was passed last year requires that the president give a reason for the removal. ‘Loss of confidence’ is not a sufficient reason.  I’m hopeful the White House will provide a more substantive rationale, in writing, as quickly as possible,” McCaskill said.

They can’t provide the real reason, which is that Walpin went after a political ally of the President’s.  That’s why they’re calling him senile instead.  Let’s hope that a few more Democrats with principle stand up to the White House’s bullying and politicization of the Inspectors General.

Update: Michelle has more on the Walpin story:

Far from being “confused” and “disoriented,” Walpin is clear as day. Anyone who actually reads through his audits and investigative reports knows that. You can, should, and must read Walpin’s reports both on CUNY funding abuse and on the Johnson scandal here.

I also continue to hammer at the Michelle Obama angle. Her vested interest in propping up the government-subsidized volunteer industry stretches back to her days leading the Chicago non-profit Public Allies (scroll down to the end of my column for what the AmeriCorps’ inspector general found while investigating money troubles at Mrs. O’s old friends at Public Allies). And we can’t forget her days working to promote national service — and to set up cozy public chat forums with her husband and Weather Underground Bill Ayers — while at the University of Chicago.

Last week, I said this reeked of the Clintons’ Travelgate. It’s much, much worse.

Read the entire column.

AnninCA on June 17, 2009 at 10:05 AM

These stupid Alinsky tactics are meant for small-scale, local government scenarios, where some rube is supposed to be overwhelmed with such “sophisticated” tactics. At the national level, where these tactics get prominent coverage (even if the lazy MSM doesn’t want to expose them), they are transparent, almost amateurish heavyhandedness.

There’s more subtlety and sophistication in a CYO field manual than in the overrated Rules for Radicals. Alinsky isn’t looking down proudly on his disciple or rolling over in his grave; like all Lefty troublemakers, he’s taking a long dirt nap.

what circumstances led obama to think he could get away without notifying The Hill?

jeanie on June 17, 2009 at 9:57 AM

Moreover the PRESIDENT answered Jeanie, and said, Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it. Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous? Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

mankai on June 17, 2009 at 10:05 AM

Walpin’s firing would never have happened if he had played ball with Obama and agreed to lift the Suspension and Debarment Order against Kevin Johnson, the new mayor of Sacramento.

According to a lawyer hired by the City of Sacramento, the Order (which prohibited Johnson from receiving any federal funds in the future because of the violations uncovered by Walpin) endangered Sacramento’s ability to receive millions in federal stimulus funds.

Not only did the Obama administration co-op the local acting U.S. Attorney into lifting the suspension (like tax cheat, Tim Geithner, Kevin Johnson was too big to fail) but the firing and smear of Walpin sends a strong signal to any other watchdogs of federal funds. With a tsunami of federal stimulus slush funds poised to wash over the country in advance of the 2010 election, the last thing the Democrats want is a bunch of do-gooder watchdogs interfering with their plans to spread a few billion in walking around money.

Obama sent a similar message to recalcitrant Democrat Congressmen who voted against his stimulus bill: “Don’t think we aren’t keeping score over here, brother.”

Ok, I’m just angry now. Does the word ‘cronyism’ mean anything to you, Mr. President? It’s bad enough that you engage in it in the first place, but now you would sink so low as to impugn the reputation and question the mental faculties of an honest, hard-working man to cover up your cronyism? One thing is for sure — you are transparent. It is transparent to me that you’re a crook.

I wonder how Patrick Kennedy feels about Obama using mental illness as a weapon.

Of course Patrick Kennedy checked back into rehab last Friday, so he’s probably busy. A reporter should track him down to get a quote.

Sometimes the other person is “crazy”. You are the opinion that every opinion is of equal value, that every argument is equal in content, purpose, and rationale?

right2bright on June 17, 2009 at 9:49 AM

Yes, every opinion is of equal value.

Philosophers and other educated folk distinguish between the context of discovery and the context of justification.

I don’t care where the idea came from. I care about the process of verification, in which the idea is shown to be real or not.

See that? In my scheme, the whole idea that you ridicule the bastard who has an idea, that never arises, and I’m a little disappointed you seem to think it fair game.

The firing “rationale” doesn’t pass the smell test. Who am I gonna believe the president and his goons, or my own eyes. I’ve seen this guy on tv, and he isn’t senile.

But, Walpin’s just some old white guy who blew the whistle on one of Bam’s buds, so I cynically doubt McCaskill’s objection will make much headway.

Of course he wanted to work from his home. Hopefully his abode is a heavily fortified Castle in the Catskills. Taking the DC/NYC mass transit would be suicide for this poor guy….”Nice life ya got dare, be a shame if sumtin was to happen, Capice”

It should be interesting to hear what Robert Bork says about this. I forgot he was caught in the middle of the Saturday Night Massacre.

Bork complied with Nixon’s order and fired Cox. Initially, the White House claimed to have fired Ruckelshaus, but as The Washington Post article written the next day pointed out, “The letter from the President to Bork also said Ruckelshaus resigned.”

Congress was infuriated by the act, which was seen as a gross abuse of presidential power. In the days that followed, numerous bills of impeachment against the president were introduced in Congress. Nixon defended his actions in a famous press conference on November 17, 1973, in which he stated,

“…[I]n all of my years of public life, I have never obstructed justice. And I think, too, that I can say that in my years of public life that I’ve welcomed this kind of examination, because people have got to know whether or not their president’s a crook. Well, I’m not a crook! I’ve earned everything I’ve got.”[2]

Really there is no comparison. Your reference is based upon popular urban myth. Reinstating that rather than reinstating the actual history aids in the Socialists’ revisionism.

Although Nixon was not the healthiest of personalities, Nixon never undermined the Constitution. Watergate was the scandal from unemployed thugs attempting to make themselves important by raiding the DNC Headquarters to pilfer documents to shame the Democrat Party for officially hiring prostitutes for their Convention. Nixon’s only fault was that when he FINALLY heard what happened, rather than cutting off the culprits, he was afraid he’d be associated with their guilt since they were anti-DNC. His paranoia was his own demise as he tried to cover up what happened. He never swore under oath a lie. He himself was not the crook. That Congress chose to make such a heyday out of the scandal is itself a scandal; they forced Nixon to face Impeachment. Nixon RESIGNED rather than drag the Senate through the Impeachment procedure. Nixon was not the blatant liar and power monger that Bill Clinton proved to be. But that doesn’t matter to modern history if people keep promoting the Democrat propaganda.

Whereas, in contrast with Nixon, the only efforts that Obama supports are to demise the Constitution.

Sadly, Obama and his cronies have us all by the shorthairs and we can do nothing about this in the short term. That is why they are pressing full steam ahead.

What’s the plan, folks. Conservatives are a confused and disorganized lot. This is more than the GOP can handle. We need a little help from our friends, the disillusioned Obama supporters and the protest vote independents. Glen Beck has the right idea, but he needs a little help too.

We either capitalize on the current mood or lose our country.

Looks like Kevin Johnson “Double Dibbled.”

SmallGovtGuy on June 17, 2009 at 11:14 AM

This is easily dealt with.

Call in the board of directors, put them under oath and ask them if he was acting nuts in said meeting.

This kind of charge is right out of the gulags. WTF?

patrick neid on June 17, 2009 at 11:15 AM

I heard Walpin on talk radio. You would think that they would find something a little more plausible than senility. The guy has gotten some exposure since Friday and he looks and sounds more coherent than Obama.

ORconservative on June 17, 2009 at 11:19 AM

They are now smearing him by claiming he has dementia. I’ve heard him speak a number of times. He does not have dementia.

This is a typical leftard tactic – attack people using pseudo-psychiatric b.s.

They are busy setting up the Bozo Hussein propaganda network in the White House. This is starting to look more and more like Venezuela and Uganda every day.

TravelGate redeux…corrupt first lady acting to protect buddies and then trumping up charges against the folk abused…We have Carter on foreign policy and Clinton on domestic abuse in Obama…the absolute worst of democrat failings.

JIMV on June 17, 2009 at 11:23 AM

Now is a very good time to have Mr. Walpin appear on Fox News as often as possible so he can be a character witness for himself while scoffing at Obama’s senility charges. He should also have his lawyer present to discuss whether or not a libel suit is in order for the attacks on his mental state and character. That’s how you deal with Chicago thugs.

maverick muse on June 17, 2009 at 11:00 AM

I’m not sure about that, but it doesn’t matter. This is not about Nixon. This is about Obama. This is about doing what’s right, NOW, not rehashing something someone else did decades ago. That’s just a diversion tactic.

Daggett on June 17, 2009 at 11:29 AM

Anybody remember what today is? This is the anniversary of the Watergate break in back in 1972. This seems ironic that this this Walpin event has been brought up today. This BO president we have seems even more dangerous the Nixon.I am afraid we won’t have another national election again. This needs to blow up in the face of the great one.

garydt on June 17, 2009 at 11:41 AM

But it would appear the only ones that are really, really buying this are the O-bots and the MSM.

Upstater85

Unfortunately, that’s all Ogabe needs. The rest of America is experiencing Obama-narcosis.

SKYFOX on June 17, 2009 at 11:46 AM

Mr. Walpin is finding out the cost of telling the truth about corruput Democrats, particularly Black Democrats. Backdated memos are one of their favorite techniques for character assassination.

mr1216 on June 17, 2009 at 11:48 AM

Mr. Walpin was just on Laura’s show. Sounded good to me. Quite the icon we have in the White House.
