Hope and change: New WSJ poll shows America souring on Obamanomics?

posted at 9:34 pm on June 17, 2009 by Allahpundit

The question mark’s there because he still has a 51/38 favorable rating on the economy, down five points since February. But:

Fifty-eight percent say that the feds should focus on keeping the budget deficit down even if it means the economy will take longer to recover. Meanwhile, Geraghty, reading the same poll, notes that he’s dropped from a two-to-one majority among independents in April to “closely divided” today. Exit question: Um, which economic measures does America have a favorable opinion of, exactly?

Blowback

If porkulus and the bailouts had never happened, we’d be in the same position now or even better off.

Recessions happen, you can’t cure them. All you can do is things like extend unemployment benefits and address some of the problems that got us here that could have been avoided WITHOUT becoming a totalitarian state.

That bit about the budget was reassuring. But I can already hear Captain Legthrill comparing Obama to Milton Friedman in two years when we start crawling out of this recession.

I suppose if the economy recovers, it may be worth the price, but I don’t have to like it.

Guilt is a terrible thing and we have trained to be dishonest about our feeling based on peoples color, religion and gender. Disapproving of his policies is the first step but it needs to be more robust. As to those people who don’t have an opinion, who do you think they voted for?

Cindy Munford on June 17, 2009 at 9:51 PM

This is why the Obama campaign and the media worked very hard to conceal the inner radical, going forward every pink slip, every foreclosure, every closed business, the media shares the blame right along with the Marxist they conspired to elect.

Well, I’m pretty sure the reason Obama isn’t in negatives yet is that his buddy Jeff Immelt has his network (eh hem, CNBC) shilling the miracle of Obamanomics 24/7 now. These guys are sunshine pumping this economy non-stop. Every bad report that comes out…they spin into good news! Actually, not all of them are shilling…the old hands are trying to blink out in morse code that it’s all lies. Bottom line…many Obamaniacs are about to lose their shirts in the markets…our shirts will come a little later.

Dark-Star on June 17, 2009 at 10:01 PM

Yup. I tried explaining this to my hopenchange-deranged, leg-tingling roommate. A conservative black man would have been a much better choice, because he would be much less likely to be a spectacular failure.

But YES-WE-CAN!1! got the better of him, and now who can tell what the legacy will be with regard to future black presidents?

Still, I have another downbeat perspective on the matter.

If Barack Obama turns out to be the utter disaster he seems to be, if his policies end up transforming America into a mediocre shadow of its former greatness, it might be possible to trace it all the way back to the fundamental problem of the founding: slavery.

It may turn out that, in compromising on the matter of slavery at the time, the founding fathers might have inadvertently sown the seeds of the country’s very destruction some two hundred thirty(ish) years later.

It would be hard to blame them too much, though. How could they have anticipated the way in which twentieth century liberals would thrive on fomenting dissension and unhappiness some one hundred and fifty years after the slavery matter had finally been settled, advocating reckless policies and soft enslavement to the coffers of the state?

How could they have known that Americans would advocate soul-killing policies that would only end up harming the black community even more and nurturing generations of bitter radicals from broken families with never-ending grievances, so that even when one finally manages to achieve what most Americans will never — the presidency — all he can do once he gets there is destroy the very thing that enabled him to achieve greatness in the first place.

If that’s what happens, then the founding fathers got it wrong. They should never have compromised on slavery in order to get the Declaration of Independence. John Adams understood that, too, I think, and Barack Obama may end up proving him right.

Kensington on June 17, 2009 at 11:08 PM

I realize that this was a WSJ/NBC poll but wow, I’m not a number cruncher but I don’t see how the 51/38 ratio number adds up or makes any sense unless some data omissions are not being presented.

Mr. Hotshot President has three balls, two chain saws, an apple, a toaster, and 6 flaming torches in the air already, after just 5 months on the job.

He can’t keep em all going for long. Healthcare reform is already startin to smell like Hillarycare redux. The rats are scurrying to their corners.

When all these moving parts decide to go thier separate ways, it’s going to be one hum dinger of a melt down at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Oh boy, this is gonna be great!

But he’s so cool and stuff.

Anyone know why this poll is taken for “cell phone only recipients”?

mph on June 17, 2009 at 11:56 PM

Fifty-eight percent say that the feds should focus on keeping the budget deficit down even if it means the economy will take longer to recover.

That implies a positive cause and effect relationship between the two.

Dr. ZhivBlago on June 17, 2009 at 11:57 PM

Sorry, that should be “cell phone only respondents“.

mph on June 17, 2009 at 11:57 PM

So either CNN or WSJ is full of crap.

angryed on June 17, 2009 at 11:06 PM

The available answers were different, though. CNN’s multiple choice question gave a third “Goldilocks” option – “about right.” Easy pick for fence sitters.

WSJ only had “right approach” and “wrong approach.” In this case the mushy middle had to choose, and they mostly chose “wrong.” That’s telling.

Missy on June 17, 2009 at 11:58 PM

Oops, sorry, WSJ did have a third option – “not sure.” But that’s not the same thing as “about right,” and only 5% chose it.

Answered my own question and here is some information on polls done with cell phone only respondents.

Drill anywhere 24/7 – bulk up the SOR
