Hope and change: New WSJ poll shows America souring on Obamanomics?

posted at 9:34 pm on June 17, 2009 by Allahpundit

The question mark’s there because he still has a 51/38 favorable rating on the economy, down five points since February. But:

Fifty-eight percent say that the feds should focus on keeping the budget deficit down even if it means the economy will take longer to recover. Meanwhile, Geraghty, reading the same poll, notes that he’s dropped from a two-to-one majority among independents in April to “closely divided” today. Exit question: Um, which economic measures does America have a favorable opinion of, exactly?

They are sheep, nothing more. Nobody knows this more than Obama, he can take them anywhere HE wants them to go.

If porkulus and the bailouts had never happened, we’d be in the same position now or even better off.

Recessions happen, you can’t cure them. All you can do is things like extend unemployment benefits and address some of the problems that got us here that could have been avoided WITHOUT becoming a totalitarian state.

Spiritk9 on June 17, 2009 at 9:40 PM

Honestly, so far this recession isn’t nearly as bad as the early 80s! Obama is turning this into a depression so he can grab power and make us all into zombie government serfs.

petunia on June 18, 2009 at 1:24 AM

It’s only been around five months of Obamanomics, and he’s driven the economy to unrecognizable lows. He can’t blame Bush too much longer as the average American Idiot won’t remember him longer than a few more weeks. The deficit the “One” has created with his Marxist strategies is about to become a millstone around his neck in his self-created ocean of debt. Good luck with that buddy, you’ll need it…Imapeach Obama for not protecting the Constitution!!!

C. Confident.
D. Not confident.

Rigging it much?

Seriously though, even with all the propaganda the media throws out there, Americans are turning. Imagine if the media were fair and balanced. Obama would already be unpacking his things in Chicago.

The deficit and the fact that Congress and the White House are willingly ignoring it and spending money we don’t have, raising debt that will surely destroy America. At some point, these actions have to be viewed as, at the very least, severe neglect of official duties making those in office unfit to hold their seats, and at most, an actual attack on America and the Constitution.

amkun on June 18, 2009 at 6:53 AM

I think Obama is starting to scare people and this crap of blaming Bush is going to get old fast.

Plus, according to the recent Fox poll more than 60% do not think much of Obama’s handling of North Korea and Iran.

I wonder what the American people would say if you ask if they want $5 gas and higher light bills? I am going to go out on a limb here and say they would disapprove.

Terrye on June 18, 2009 at 7:14 AM

From Feb to April, the public began their disenchantment with Obama’s administration. From April to June the disenchantment became disillusionment. And Obama can’t stop it. The harder he forces himself on the public, the more he’s rejected.

Terrye’s right. When you’re forking out for higher utilities, gas, and taxes and getting hit by even HIGHER prices as inflation sets in, there’s nothing Obama can say to tax payers who only earn $40K/year to make them feel better. I scoff at everyone who swore Obama would lower their taxes because they only earn X amount of dollars; AS IF Obama would ever give anyone anything unless they submit to his ownership and remain indentured forever in his service.

Top it off with HIS DEMANDS that WE SACRIFICE more and More and MORE. Obama will gladly sacrifice us, but never sacrifice anything himself, never his elitist criminals whom he’s appointed to be our abusive leaders. They are laughing all the way from the Federal Reserve, FDIC to the nation’s banks that THEY own with the federal tax dollars that they presume to own (possession is 9 tenths of the law, ask any thief to verify the legality).

No wonder Obama is loosing sleep….

doriangrey on June 17, 2009 at 9:36 PM

This I believe is actually true. Obama isn’t worried about the economy… except where it will affect his poll numbers. He’s not worried about ANYTHING except where affecting his poll numbers is involved.

The reason is obvious: Obama is a cult of personality and popularity. He loses popularity, he’s done. While Obama is “the one” totalitarian dictator wannabe, he is only able to ride roughshod over the hundreds of others from his own party in congress only while popular enough to make them scared to assert themselves. I guarantee that Nancy Pelosi probably despises him because she thinks SHE is the one running things…

Obama’s poll numbers, his popularity is the latest “bubble”. But unlike the more recent ones (dot com, housing) it will be a GOOD THING when this one bursts. And it is inevitable, he can’t keep polling at 60% disapproval on what he’s doing and maintain 60% personal approval forever.

And he knows this, it’s why he’s been in a hurry to pass as much of his Hugo Chavez agenda as fast as he can, possibly with the pipe dream of it not MATTERING what his popularity is after getting it passed…

bluegrass on June 18, 2009 at 8:21 AM

Maybe this explains why he’s on TV all the time, aside from the fact that he believes he’s a superstar. And when you think about it, he really hasn’t accomplished that much on his own, he’s farmed out a lot of bills for Congress to create. Huge mistake…they’re incompetent. He hasn’t even made any considerable remarks on the important issues, either, like North Korea or Iran. He doesn’t need the GOP to want him to fail, he’s doing it all on his own.

scalleywag on June 18, 2009 at 8:34 AM

Keep in mind these poll numbers are nuanced by a 40% rally in the stock market. If the market should test or break the March lows, Obama and crew will probably be shown the door in 2012 if the Repubs could show a little leadership.

$40K/year to make them feel better. I scoff at everyone who swore Obama would lower their taxes because they only earn X amount of dollars;
maverick muse on June 18, 2009 at 7:43 AM

Obama lied about tax cuts for the $40K a year set because those who make $40K a year don’t pay any taxes. That is one of the many myths – like the supposed 47 million uninsured – that for some odd reason is never challenged by the GOP.

If you make anything less than $75K a year, your tax bill is negligible. Less than $40K a year and it’s $0 in most cases. Which is why the notion of a middle class tax cut is laughable. The middle class doesn’t pay any taxes. You cannot cut something that doesn’t exist.

What pisses me off to no end is that I paid more in federal taxes last year than the majority of Americans grossed. Yet Obama and his gang of thieves keep telling me that I’m not paying my fair share.

They don’t care one nit what the people think on this. We be too stupid to know how to fix things, remember? We don’t have no Ivy league educations, therefore we is dumber than rocks.

Foreign policy update.

Obama thinks meddling with Israel will help Iran become more settled and less anxious.

Excellent comment. Obama can quite easily promise not to raise taxes on those who already don’t pay them. (He wouldn’t be able to collect much, anyway, since they make so little.)

The problem for Obama comes when the price of everything else starts to go up. That will hit the non-taxpayers in the wallet and promises about not raising their taxes become totally meaningless.

Remember, the spike in oil and subsequent hike in gas and food prices started all the dominoes falling for the Republicans in 2008. That looks like it’s beginning to happen again, and doesn’t even take into account the coming inflation wave. Obama has to force his agenda through before all this hits. It’s going to be ugly.

Republican voters were underrepresented in the thing, too. They were 45% of the electoral results, but only 39% of the people who responded to the poll as having voted for McCain (excluding those that didn’t vote.) Obama got 51% in the election, and roughly 50% of the respondents (again excluding non-voters) said that they voted for him.

So when looking that these numbers, remember that Obama voters are overrepresented.
