White House throws Kennedy under the bus?

posted at 3:15 pm on June 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This time, it’s Ted Kennedy’s turn to go under the Obama bus.  After the CBO reported that the health-care plan circulating in the Senate would cost at least $1,000,000,000,000 (a trillion) over ten years, Jake Tapper reports that the White House has hit full retreat, complete with backup beepers.  Despite having President Obama on the road just yesterday in an effort to build support for the reform efforts wending their way through Congress, suddenly no one in the West Wing has ever heard of them:

“This is not the Administration’s bill,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said in a statement following the Congressional Budget Office’s analysis of Sen. Ted Kennedy’s health care reform legislation, “and it’s not even the final Senate Committee bill.”

Both statements are true, though it’s not clear who, if anyone, had been saying that the legislation drafted by the powerful chairman of the Senate Health Education Labor and Pension Committee constituted President Obama’s bill. Kennedy is but one of several legislators taking a crack and drafting legislation that will proceed through the legislative meat grinder and result in a bill that President Obama will sign. In reality, there is no actual “Administration” bill.

The CBO made that same point about the lack of finality.  That’s why the report only prices those elements within the incomplete draft, which did not initially include a “public plan”.  The cost for that — which the Obama administration demands as part of the final version — will likely push the final number much higher.

Gibbs’ response demonstrates that, yet again, the White House has deferred the entirety of policy creation to Congress.  Just as Obama did with his stimulus plan, the administration hasn’t offered any leadership on the issue.  Instead, Obama makes himself into the Campaigner in Chief on policy speeches supporting legislation to which he remains oblivious until the CBO puts a pricetag on it.  Don’t get me wrong: that’s great work if you can find it, traveling on Air Force One in the middle of a severe recession explaining how the President plans to spend ever-increasing shares of money none of us have.  And it does fit nicely into his previous work experience, none of which required him to show any leadership or do any actual work outside stump speeches.

Apparently responding to the CBO’s numbers and the ensuing criticism of the Kennedy bill, Gibbs continued, saying “what is clear is what will happen if we let political posturing stand in the way of reform again: exploding deficits, lob loss, dwindling benefits, and millions more Americans joining the ranks of the uninsured. That’s unacceptable, and that’s why stakeholders from across the spectrum are joining with President Obama to enact health care reform that finally gets costs under control and expands coverage – without adding to our deficit.”

A plan that costs a trillion dollars won’t add to our deficit?  Really? And adding a public plan on top of that won’t create an entitlement commitment on top of the collapsing entitlements of Medicare and Social Security, either.  And the unicorns will run through the lollipop fields with the Easter Bunny to collect all of the lemonade raindrops for Peter Pan.  Don’t forget to clap for Tinkerbell!

Maybe someone should pull Ted out from under the bus, and ask him how it feels to get shafted by the administration for carrying its water on Capitol Hill.

I think it would be at least a trillion in the first year. If you are going to ensure everybody in the US for a year it’s going to cost at least a trillion a year. Unless you start denying treatment to the citizens. Then your really going to have a mess on your hands. I hope this health care scam fails.

If Obama is turning on this bill it’s because he knows that this issue is going to be the one that torpedoes his popularity once and for all.

As for it not being “his” bill, can anyone come up with a SINGLE bill that “The One” has actually SENT to Congress, rather than make his proclamation then leave it to THEM to write (so he won’t have his fingerprints on it)?

I doubt Kennedy cares much about it. He has his own special gold-plated (at taxpayer expense) Senate health care plan to pay for all the top-rated brain cancer specialists he chooses to consult. He’ll never have to worry about being denied care by some government bureaucrat because he’s too old, or too fat, or spent too much of his life sucking on an alcohol bottle. He’ll be checking out soon, having lived a life of privilege at our expense, waving and shouting “so long, suckers” at the rest of us who have to live with the consequences of his liberal “legacy.”

The cost of providing defensive medicine to avoid law suits is staggering. But what really drives up the cost is the relationship of doctors and Insurance companies.

When my dad was in the hospital, his doctor had an endless stream of “specialists” come by the room to make an appearance but do nothing; then charge $500. a pop to the insurance company. I don’t think all of the “specialists” even showed up. It was a license to steal, and they did.

The insurance companies make a percentage of the cash flow, and the bigger the number, the more dollars involved. The scrutiny and oversight of doctors charges and insurance company payments is bad, and truly needs to be improved somehow.

You really don’t understand healthcare, do you?

Our medical system is not perfect, by a long shot. But, specialists are consulted when there is an issue they may be able to help with. Also, much of the “care” happens with orders, notes and consultation with nursing. Just because they aren’t standing by your bed for hours doesn’t mean they haven’t impacted your care.

I can assure you, when I need treatment for a specific issue I want someone who knows that issue. A generalist is good for routine care, but specialization has vastly improved outcomes in many critical diagnoses.

I ended up getting in my Dad’s doctor’s face about all the pills they were feeding him. He went in for a skin rash, and when he tried to get up the first night to take a leak, the nurse literally jumped on top of him when he started to get out of bed. The hospital imediately shot him full of a large dose of setitives followed by a pile of pills. When we checked him into the hospital the afternoon before, he was fine. The next morning, he was so pilled up he couldn’t speak cohearantly. He was an old guy and never recovered from the overdose of setatives. Thats when the defensive medicine took over.

My dad never recovered from the drugs, and he died in a different hospital 2 weeks later. He was 89, so we had no chance for a malpractice suit. But, I don’t trust doctors to always do the right thing. The current system is a perfect storm of problems.

I spent 20+ years working in insurance and health care, and several concepts in the Kennedy plan are unworkable, ie insuring your ‘children’ until age 26
insane, so anyone who has been divorced and knows the joys of that court system who has a medical child support order saying how they pay for the kids’ insurance, now you have to try to enfore that through age 26?? so cheeto eating Obots can coast on mommy and daddys dime?
then there is the mandatory renewal and non discriminatory premium increases for health related issues, so you cant charge more for smokers. Well thats ridiculous,. In life ins and health ins smokers are charged more, i paid more when I smoked. cuz we get ill more and die earlier.
then they are going to exclude certain groups from the mandatory payment, and are in some places talking about up to 500% of poverty level
Keith Hennesseys analysis is right on point
They are going to GUT Medicare payments to providers absolutely GUT them. all hospitals that accept ANY federal money, medicare what have you are required to provide services via the Emergency Room, the legislation is called EMTALA when we pay claims, soo all the nitwits who choose not to have coverage and make plenty of money do cost the rest of us and do bankrupt hospitals, now TOTUS is gutting the reimbursements to try and prove to CBO he can save like his BS projections..
I wanted UHC, I wanted a universal mandate with tax credits for small businesses and medicaid expansion to 150% of pverty level when unemployment was 10% or higher, a trigger if you will…that would go a long way to reducing unecessary costs in ER use by the uninsured
but no way no way can we allow any comparative effectiveness panel, or medical advisory board, or MAC ro whatever they call it, it is code for let the babyboomers die and go UK style…
/rant off, thanks

It is said that of the 47 Million Uninsured, 60% of them are illegal aliens who shouldn’t even be here!

But remember, folks. Millions of illegal aliens are going into hospitals every year and THEY get medical coverage, on our dime! Millions of illegal alien’s kids are born and we will be paying for them for the next 18 years…..two things need to be done.

1. Revisit the 14th Amendment and stop giving citizenship to lawbreaker’s children. This would save billions.
2. Stop giving free medical coverage to lawbreakers. And if it is an emergency, stabilize and then bill the home country as you give the illegal and their illegal family the boot back to said home country.

Speaking of chickens, this is the problem with the R party…..on Cavuto, they have a blowhard come out and try to sell obamacare before he even knows what it is about, then the R party rolls out some albino p*ssy to sell their plan…..Come on, guys, let’s get some meat out there.

Maybe someone should pull Ted out from under the bus, and ask him how it feels to get shafted by the administration for carrying its his scotch and water on Capitol Hill.

Just seems more right somehow.

Teddy said, ” there’s thinkers, and there’s Dewars. Make mine a double.”

True true true.

But, the law breakers are fertile ground for the liberal vote farming operation. Where else is the “party og dough” going to find that many ignorant zombies to stuff the voting booths with?

Tru dat! It’s time for the hammer to fall. I can’t wait for July 4th! Tea time!

Obama sees other people as ablative armor. We are all tools, witnesses, or repositories of blame.

Narcissist.

But doesn’t Kennedy have Absolute Moral Authority status regarding health care because he has brain cancer? Somebody get on the horn to Maureen Dowd and check on this!

Blacklake on June 16, 2009 at 4:14 PM

“This is not the Administration’s bill,” … … “and it’s not even the final Senate Committee bill.”

Because we all know by the time they get it all together, 1 Trillion won’t quite cover the tab… anybody bet on 2 Trillion?

The only thing Ted Kennedy is an authority on involving the word ABSOLUTE, is vodka.

I’ll see your 2 trillion, and raise you another trillion, or 2.

capejasmine on June 16, 2009 at 4:23 PM

Ted should keep in mind that cold wet day at Chappaquiddick.
In a few month he’ll be permanently warm. Very warm.

“How did Charlie Gibson get a room at the WH with Jake Tapper working for ABC?”

Payback for the Palin interview.

That sucks.

But…

I will wager 1/2 the pills given to your dad were given so that the doctors would not get sued. See if they didn’t give him every pill in the world and he died, you’d be lining up to sue them for not giving him the right pills. Well maybe YOU wouldnt but a lot of people do.

It’s not conservative to criticize the president for not writing legislation. That’s a role for Congress–at least, as the constitutional text is written. And frankly, our failure to draw such distinctions has only assisted President Obama’s ad hoc “legislation” concerning the auto dealers and other TARP-related doosies.

cackcon on June 16, 2009 at 4:32 PM

See how great a ‘community organizer’ is as president? Wow! Everyday I’m impressed less and less. The dynamic LEADERSHIP is really apparent……..or is it THE LACK OF?
