The GOP would have more credibility …

… if its staffers would quit sending out e-mails like this:
Newscoma posted details of a racist email sent from Sherri Goforth, legislative aid for Sen. Diane Black (R-Gallatin). The email depicts the Presidents of the United States with President Barack Obama as a pair of eyes in a black background.
I spoke with Sherri Goforth minutes ago to confirm she sent this email. She confirmed she had sent it and also said she had received a letter of reprimand from her superiors but said she will stay on the job.
When I asked her if she understood the controversial nature of the photo, Goforth would only say she felt very bad about accidentally sending it to the wrong list. When I gave her a second chance to address the controversial nature of the email, she again repeated that she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list of people.
… and if the staffers in question would quit offering excuses like this:
“I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth told NIT. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”
You can see the image at the link; I’ll skip reproducing it here. It’s well described by Nashville Is Talking, and it’s undeniably racist in nature. Given that, I’m at a loss as to why the Tennessee GOP kept Goforth in her position. Part of her job, whether explicitly stated or not, isnot to embarrass the Republican Party. Goforth just got an epic fail on that key mission. Keeping her, especially after the apology not for sending the picture at all but just for sending it to the wrong people, gives the distinct impression that the GOP considers this a minor issue and not a major blow to our credibility with black voters.
Tommy Christopher calls this the worst apology of the week. So far, it might be the worst apology of the year.
Conservatives just spent the last week roasting David Letterman for his crude and misogynistic remarks about Sarah Palin’s daughters. We need to demand the same level of responsibility from our own side, especially from within the Republican Party.
Update: AC Kleinheider says Ms. Goforth isn’t really a player in the game. I understand what he’s saying, but I think he underestimates how this can damage the party. If secretaries at the Tennessee Democratic Party were passing along racist or misogynistic e-mails, Republicans would rightly rip the Dems for it.

Gore, whose father voted against the Civil Rights Act.
Robert, take a look at who Bush actually employed.
Bush appointed the first black woman as Secretary of State. He appointed the first Hispanic and Mexican-American to serve as US Attorney General. And he appointed the first Chinese-American and first Asian-American to be appoint to ANY President’s cabinet.

Unfortunately that picture trumps all of that.
People never remember the past – just what is out there like – a glaring spook picture.
She should be fired.

Funny my black friends worry about the same things I do – their job, the schools their kids go to, the moral decay of America, lack of patriotism. I guess “Black” people are not the homogeneous voting bloc you liberals like to make them out to be.

Did you notice which candidate received over 95% of the black vote in the last election?
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 12:01 PM
That is well-known and not what I refuted.
No there isn’t.
That’s not what I refuted either. What I refuted was that his Kenyan Luo father is mostly Arab. He is not.
Also most black Americans (roughly 80%) have some white American ancestry, so mentioning Obama’s slave owner ancestry isn’t earth shaking news–at least not to black Americans.
Disclaim: my father is a Kenyan Luo who came over on the same plane as the elder Obama and my mother is a black American descended from slave–and slave owners.

Agreed, or forced to wear the offending email around her neck in downtown for three weeks while pedestrians are prompted to explain to her what is offensive about the picture.

Though I don’t agree with this. Perception may be that it trumps all of that, but reality tells another story.
Black people voting for a black person? Yeah, you’ve got a real point there.
Esthier on June 17, 2009 at 12:04 PM
Yes, and the endorsement of Colin Powell. That is real racism when you vote for someone only because of their skin color. Blacks and rust belt people are instinctively voting Democrat because they always have but never actually get anything in return. At some point even they will wake up and vote issues.

dpierson on June 17, 2009 at 12:08 PM
As I point out to Republicans, John Kerry received 89% of the black vote in 2004. That 6% more black Americans wanted to see a black man become president is not surprising and not indicative of whether or not blacks as a whole wanted more government more that was so in 2004.
There is a mistaken but understandable notion that because the federal government put the clamp on slavery and on Jim Crow that the fed is always benevolent. Statists play on that notion.

You obviously do not have the intelligence to properly frame what political life is within the context of a democracy. Democrats will be in charge for 4 and maybe 8 years. Then they will have overreached and Republicans get elected, then they overreach the other way and Democrats get elected. There is no finality to the process and you are basking in a false sense of final victory which just isn’t there.

I repeat: Kenyans (and some Americans) think that Muslim=Arab.
You mean like this? I don’t know of any Arabs who look like this. Here’s a photo of my father–same nationality, same, tribe, not a Muslim.

I don’t think Letterman should be fired. I didn’t even before he apologized even though I was offended that he thinks it’s OK to make insulting jokes like that about a politician’s daughter.
I think people should “vote” with their remotes. If you think his humor is that bad, don’t watch but don’t try to get him fired. Talking and saying controversial things is part of his job. If anything, he’ll likely leave Palin alone for quite awhile now.
That said, this staffer’s job was to represent the GOP (albeit in a very small way), and she’s now failed at that horribly and thus should be fired or should have the courage to step down herself.

I agree wholeheartedly. Barack Obama is planting seeds and the tide has turned for good. Of course there will be setbacks but for every step back we take two steps forward. Just 50 years ago I had to ride the back of the bus, coudnt eat at certain restaurants, stay in an upscale hotel, drink from certain water fountains, join certain golf clubs, er well maybe that’s still the case. Now a black man is the WH. American culture is getting browner and more inclusive and there is nothing that can stop it. I’m loving it.

A couple photos does not invalidate Lamb’s research. Again, I’d like to see a refutation based on facts, if there is one available.
No, it’s purely academic interest on my part. I do enjoy the irony though, that leftists who believe in “white guilt” absolve Obama for it, even though he is as “guilty” as anyone else.
Rebar on June 17, 2009 at 12:33 PM
No, but Kenneth Lamb conjured an elaborate fable about the very phenotypically black African Obama Sr. being genetically mostly Arab in order to attempt to alienate Obama from black Americans.
Anyone with the slightest knowledge of Kenyan cultural practices–not to mention eyes and a functioning BS detector–knew that Lamb’s elaborately mapped fable was embarrassingly illogical. But some people want to hold onto to this fable, for various reasons.
baldilocks on June 17, 2009 at 12:37 PM

This is why I think it’s over.
I do not think conservatism can “sway” the hard heads and we either will have to put up with them or secede. They are lost, and they will destroy this country with us in it.
The only way we will be able to preserve America as our Founders intended will be to separate ourselves from these barbarians and start anew elsewhere, i.e., Texas and other red states that would secede – just as the Pilgrims left for a new world because they could not practice their religion in peace.
Let the parasites destroy themselves, and let us go our own way, forming a better and more perfect union without them.

You haven’t even bothered to make up an answer to my question. Nothing you’ve posted here indicates that your loyalty to the Democrats has anything to do with anything but the color of your skin.
Ah. I was missing why it would matter. I must admit, the picture seems to speak for itself. I don’t even see any half traces of Arabic ancestry there.
Esthier on June 17, 2009 at 12:47 PM
Sorry but yes, the photos do refute this. So does Obama Jr.’s appearance. So does the knowledge of the cultural history of my father’s tribe and of religions which proselytized in the region. My father and Obama’s father are tribally and phenotypically identical. But one is called “Arab” by the Kenya government and the other is not. Why? Because that is the what the Kenya government says about all Muslims. The Kenya government conflates Muslim and Arab.
My father, who could be Obama Sr.’s twin is not designated as Arab by the Kenyan government. Why not? Because his family are not Muslims. This isn’t rocket science, but it was too complicated for Mr. Lamb, apparently.
I pray for you–that when you wake up, it won’t be too late.

What bothers me the most is that this tennessee GOPer also professes to be a “christian” and belongs to one of the many heretical protestant sects.
That is the sad part..truly the protestant sectarians are the leading cause of atheism in this country.
Right now I am ashamed to be registered republican and associated with the unchecked racism that presides in this party.
Those of you who are racists and belong to some form of sectarian “christianity”..you need to leave your demonic racist beliefs behind and heed the words of Christ God who clearly tells us that there is only one race, the human race, and that all are one in Christ Jesus!
All of you racists need to understand that the only reason you are racist to begin with is because you are SELF CENTERED and SELF OBSSESSED. Racism is purely self centeredness, self obssession, fear and paranoia and reactionary hatred.
Racism is a salvational issue in that it takes you away from God and toward your own self obssession and prevents you from participating in the Divine Energies of God.
But is also a social issue in that it hurts many people around you and influences others to participate in your hatred and heresy.
In the Orthodox Church there is no racism. We have black priests and deacons, asian priests and deacons and all races.
We in the Orthodox Church who receive the Body of Christ in the One Holy Apostolic Church, we are the Body of Christ and we are all one in Christ regardless of our ethnicity.
Look.. those of you who defend racism or evade with relativistic excuses ARE racists and you need to re-examine and abandon your hateful and hurtful racist beliefs, not only for your own benefit but for the benefit of all those around you and the benefit of the republican party also.

It’s not as neatly packaged as you want because encyclopedias don’t routinely set about to disprove every error made by every writer. Read enough about Kenya and you will discover that Baldilocks is correct and Kenneth Lamb is wrong.
Or, do a Google image search for Barack Obama Father, Barack Obama aunt, Barack Obama grandmother, Barack Obama africa family, and you will see dozens of pictures of people who look like they are of West African descent, and none that look like they are Arabs. So, you will discover that Baldilocks is correct and Kenneth Lamb is wrong.

Boy, both of you need to put this in perspective. What she did was stupid and racist – yes. But since when does stupidity warrant punishment beyond ridicule. If I steal something at the local supermarket I get a slap on the wrist – so in your world saying something stupid and hurtful is worse than that. This sissyfication of this country is going to far – bring back doge ball!

Lox, please add MaximumConfessor to your list of Trolls. He was previously banned as St. Olaf.

Excuse me, that’s MaximusConfessor after St. Maximus.

I confess I’ve noticed that maximum arrogance is often tied to minimum humility.

African Elephant, am I on your watch list too?

Burnt coke? That’s one I’ve never heard of.
Ashamed? Of a skill that requires really no skill at all but the ability to listen (something you very obviously don’t have).
And I’m sure you’re great at basketball. Keep telling yourself that you live up to all the hype a black man is supposed to live up to. I mean, it’s not like you’re less of a man just because you’re really not that “big” or because you can’t dunk, especially not when you can pretend to be all those things online around people who really don’t care what you are in real life.
Actually, that is the punishment I was suggesting. Ridicule. I’m all in favor of bringing back public shaming. And that’s all I suggested.

Dang. No, I hadn’t heard that, though I can’t say I’m completely surprised. There were so many drugs there, and the percentages favored the harder drugs. All you had to do was sit near your tent and eventually some guy would come around selling.
Still, at 3pm on Monday we were all supposed to be out of there. I don’t get how he could have been alive then and later found dead in his tent.
So sad.

So dancing requires no skill. I guess all those dance lessons you took went to waste.
And yes it’s true, I’m packing. I wear a size 14 shoe for goodness sakes.
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 4:02 PM
Memorized steps take memorization, hardly a skill but something useful to be taught. No one teaches how to dance but rather specific steps.
That’s like saying teachers teach how to think, when nothing could be further from the truth.
So, my brother wears a 16. All you’re telling me is that you’re not short. What’s inside is a nasty surprise for someone unlucky woman to find out when you trick her into coming home with you.

I’d check your family tree but not down his pants, unless you want to confirm another rumor about your kind.

Esthier on June 17, 2009 at 4:09 PM
I agree with you again. Your teachers never taught you to think.
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 4:16 PM
My kind? I guess that’s somehow better than “you people” again, cause I’m white.
Yours certainly taught you what to think, but no, no one can teach you how. You either know, or you don’t. But then you prefer relying on Big Brother to tell you what to do and when and have no problem regurgitating the same to others.
As of this point, 8 pages in, you’ve still yet to say what’s so great about Obama or Democrats other than some vague notion that unlike Bush, they like black people, or so you like to believe, because thinking otherwise would require, well, thought.
You rail on racism as though you know what you’re talking about but have no problem with the bigotry you’re showing me. If you’re trying to goad me into returning the favor don’t waste your time. I have no tolerance for it, even though you seem intent on fulfilling all your stereotypes as though it defines you, but who am I to say it doesn’t? Maybe that’s all you are, a caricature of a black man bordering on racist for it’s over reliance on stereotype.
Esthier on June 17, 2009 at 4:34 PM
Of course sending out a racist email should be a firing offense if you work for the Republican Party. (Anyone who doesn’t understand why she should be fired is, no offense intended, naive, ill-informed and lacking in judgment.) Perhaps the offense she really should be fired for is stupidity (low IQ). And whoever didn’t have the sense to fire her should be fired, also. This man (Obama) along with his party is wrecking my future and all these jackasses can think about is making racist jokes?? If this is the opposition party we have to rely on, we are screwed.
People in Tennessee (or whichever state this is): do not contribute to the Republican party there until you are sure that there is some sign of intelligent life in its staffers, leaders, etc. Go third party if you have to.
