The GOP would have more credibility …

… if its staffers would quit sending out e-mails like this:
Newscoma posted details of a racist email sent from Sherri Goforth, legislative aid for Sen. Diane Black (R-Gallatin). The email depicts the Presidents of the United States with President Barack Obama as a pair of eyes in a black background.
I spoke with Sherri Goforth minutes ago to confirm she sent this email. She confirmed she had sent it and also said she had received a letter of reprimand from her superiors but said she will stay on the job.
When I asked her if she understood the controversial nature of the photo, Goforth would only say she felt very bad about accidentally sending it to the wrong list. When I gave her a second chance to address the controversial nature of the email, she again repeated that she only felt bad about sending it to the wrong list of people.
… and if the staffers in question would quit offering excuses like this:
“I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth told NIT. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”
You can see the image at the link; I’ll skip reproducing it here. It’s well described by Nashville Is Talking, and it’s undeniably racist in nature. Given that, I’m at a loss as to why the Tennessee GOP kept Goforth in her position. Part of her job, whether explicitly stated or not, isnot to embarrass the Republican Party. Goforth just got an epic fail on that key mission. Keeping her, especially after the apology not for sending the picture at all but just for sending it to the wrong people, gives the distinct impression that the GOP considers this a minor issue and not a major blow to our credibility with black voters.
Tommy Christopher calls this the worst apology of the week. So far, it might be the worst apology of the year.
Conservatives just spent the last week roasting David Letterman for his crude and misogynistic remarks about Sarah Palin’s daughters. We need to demand the same level of responsibility from our own side, especially from within the Republican Party.
Update: AC Kleinheider says Ms. Goforth isn’t really a player in the game. I understand what he’s saying, but I think he underestimates how this can damage the party. If secretaries at the Tennessee Democratic Party were passing along racist or misogynistic e-mails, Republicans would rightly rip the Dems for it.

Not at all. The continuum is individualism to collectivism.
Not by definition, but by reality. That’s the way people have ordered their political theories, in great measure.
I’m speaking about American conservativism, which is defined by an originalist interpretation of our founding documents along with generally individualistic, self-reliant, and private attitudes towards internal issue. No, there are no non-individualistic conservatives in this.
These are not conservative. Why would you say they were? Our Constitution was structured to specifically prevent these sorts of organizations from occuring, here. Only through implementations of leftist theories could those systems appear. That was the whole point of America, right? To not generate such governing structures.
Paine was a nut who hit on some excellent pieces for the Revolution. I do not look to him for philosophical brilliance. Jefferson was a staticist. Look into his ideas and you’ll see the collectives.
I admire your attempt at snide condescension, but, get a grip of yourself, man. Modern political theories certainly fall neatly into the individualistic-collectivist spectrum, with American conservativism at the very individualistic end and all the rest strewn down towards collectivism/tribalism, with the more left, the more collectivist. They don’t intend to be there, but that’s how those theories and structures just develop, because of who they are and the way they think.
That’s just stupid. Racism is part of the left’s very ideology. They don’t need anyone who they even think is a “racist”, as that case in New Haven with Sotomayor should quite clearly. There were no alleged “racists” in that case, no nasty person behind the scenes somewhere. There was nothing but a disparate impact on blacks. Try to think about this stuff a little, hics. It’s not that tough.
Well .. if I’m going to be obstinate, I might as well be intransigent, too.
So, now it’s all my fault? I am causing the disparate impact of standardized tests? Heh. Sorry.

5u93rm4n on June 17, 2009 at 7:52 AM
Well how has this “outreach” worked?
Predictably not one liberal has thanked Ed for his outrage. All we have is constant anger: the political movement of Clarence Thomas, Condoleeza Rice and Michael Steele won’t admit we are racist to the core!
Maximus wants us to promise to ignore race. We tried that, back in October, and we got booed for refusing to celebrate a black man as a black man.
Conservatism has nothing for identity politics. Anybody who is a loyal American to the degree their ‘racial conscience’ permits, is lost to us. We’re open to the concerns of parents of whatever race, patriots of whatever race, business owners of whatever race. We’ll support earnest candidates of whatever race who promote our agenda. Race doesn’t matter to us. The record shows it.
Enough “outreach” to Balkanizers who think the XIV Amendment is a one-way street.

Loxodonta on June 17, 2009 at 8:34 AM
I’ve been thinking lately. In this age of instant electronic communication, with the constant news cycle putting the magnifying glass on everything, maybe it’s time to step back a bit.
If journalists (or folks in the mainstream press) would focus on what politicians DID, rather than what they SAID, the debate would be a lot more substantive. The exchange between Lanny Davis and Cheney adds nothing to our knowledge. I’m starting to see things like Obama’s Special Olympics joke and Letterman’s Palin gaffe as distractions from important changes that are being made to our government. Why fight over the fluff? There’s plenty of more important stuff to concern ourselves over.
For example, did Treasury ever fill all those open positions? Was Obama out of bounds for firing Walpin?
hawksruleva on June 17, 2009 at 8:56 AM
That first one is down right sickening.
The second is a troll, imho; she just has the ability to write better than most.
ladyingray on June 17, 2009 at 9:04 AM
I understand your sentiment but sorry, you’re wrong. It’s not Ms. Goforth called out here as much as her bosses. My Irish & Italian family have all been conservative back past Roosevelt but no racist joking or politics was ever tolerated. It’s unfair, unAmerican and simple bad manners. That this joke hasn’t gotten her fired speaks volumes to me of who is running the GOP in Tennessee.
Regardless Clarence Thomas & Condi Rice, GOP tolerance of Ms. Goforth’s racist jokes is important to the people of Tennessee. All Politics Are Local. If you’re a conservative then you will agree that people’s power starts in their own town and should spread from there. That’s where this hurts; at the real base of conservative strength in the towns and cities. The fact is many hispanics and african Americans think the GOP is run by bigots. It’s not just a caricature pushed by the media. There is a grain of truth to it.
Hannity would pipe up here, “The Civil Rights Bill was only passed by GOP votes.” He doesn’t bother to mention that most of the Southern Democrats that voted against it all switched parties over the next decade. GOP dominance in national elections since the ’60s was due to the Wallace wing of the Democratic Party joining the GOP. The solid Democrat south became solid for the GOP. The “Party of Lincoln” put down that mantle in exchange for Dixie’s electoral votes.
For folks in states like Tennessee it’s going to take some real “Outreach” and consistency from the local and state GOP to prove this isn’t the same party all those segregationists jumped to back in the ’60s. Whether we like it or not.

robertnyc212 on June 16, 2009 at 6:15 PM
Hey smartie pants, name all those Dixiecrats who became Republican. You can’t because that is a meme that has been perpetuated for years and is completely untrue. Dixiecrats did not defect to the Republican party in droves. They despised the Republicans because it was the Republicans who were pushing for de-segregation. Why would they join their party? And why was Dr. King a Republican? Why was he not a Democrat?
Do a little homework and learn your history. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was supported by 80% of Republicans and only 63% of Democrats in the House and by 82% of Republicans and only 69% of Democrats in the Senate. Hmmmm, sounds like it’s “your side” who has a problem with race.

How so? War destroys wealth, and the civil war was by far America’s most expensive war, by any metric. I don’t know if anyone’s actually crunched the numbers, but I’d wager that the cost of the war exceeded any wealth generated by slavery, and by a large amount.
I didn’t say slavery was good for blacks, I said descendants of slaves are economically better off in America than if they were in Africa. Which is pretty self evident.
I’d also point out, that Obama is half white, and those ancestors were in fact slave owners. And the other half is mostly Arab, who moved into Kenya to catch slaves for the market. So it’s well within the realm of possibility that his Arab ancestors caught blacks, that was bought by his white ancestors, and those descendants voted for him. Ironic, yes?

And again, why was Dr. King a Republican? And why did the Republicans support the Civil Rights act of 1964 overwhelmingly and the Democrats did not? And if you knew ANYTHING at all about the civil rights movement in America you would not be making such stupid statements. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. It’s not Republicans who have a former keagle in the KKK as a Senator, a man who used the N-word in this century no less.
No. See, I don’t identify myself by my skin color. I don’t identify with hateful people, and it’s extremely offensive for you to pretend that I should.

And as dedalus showed, context isn’t your strong suit. Though I notice you didn’t bother responding to him.

right4life on June 17, 2009 at 11:11 AM
She was talking about actual elected officials, you know, something you can actually point to for proof, like Robert KKK Byrd.
Besides, nearly everyone voted for Reagan. He massacred Carter. Surely you know that as well, or did you get a government education?
Esthier on June 17, 2009 at 11:12 AM
oh and sharpton and jackson ARE racists

Looks like a rep party convention.

Ahem…Nixon, Bush I and Bush II ring a bell. My bad again.
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 11:15 AM

Dixiecrats (now repubs).
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Only to a racist. They’re white and use guns. Try to see past the stereotype if you’re capable.
Umm. Nixon got 32% of the black vote. Bush II actively courted the black vote, and Bush I did what exactly that you find so offensive? Just throwing out names without facts is only showing your ignorance, not your superiority despite what you likely believe.
Esthier on June 17, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Esthier on June 17, 2009 at 11:19 AM
You’re right again, the repub party did not employ a southern strategy by seeking out and winning the support of the dixiecrats. And Reagan did not kick off his presidential campaign in of all places the town where the three civil rights workers were brutalized and murdered.
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Just ignore him. He obviously has a set number of talking points he string together in various combinations to make a point – no thought required.
Is there racism in America – sure. 90% of black people voting for guy because he is black is racist. The Democratic Party keeping black people in government sponsored submission with welfare is racist. Black people rioting because white police officers shot a black criminal is racist. Al Sharpton agitating until Jewish shop owners were killed is racist.
dpierson on June 17, 2009 at 11:26 AM
…and Bush I did what exactly that you find so offensive?
Esthier on June 17, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Willie Horton ring a bell. Get a clue.
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 11:27 AM
liars and morons now democrats
keep bending over for the democrats people like you deserve detroit (voting for the people that keep ya down)
right4life on June 17, 2009 at 11:29 AM
You a$$wipe – Willie Horton was a murderer and rapist who committed a crime while on a furlough during a life sentence. Pointing this out was not racist it was a fact.
I guess you are one of those people who think pointing out the realities of life is racists whenever that puts a certain ethnic group into a bad light.
dpierson on June 17, 2009 at 11:31 AM
this is beyond stupid….Gore used that issue first, but its more talking point stupidity

Thanks for playing, better luck next time.

You don’t have a case – just self hating liberal logic. I’ll be dammed if I get browbeaten into PC submission because of idiots like you.

I already conceded your point that slavery was ultimately good for blacks. Weeping now.

dpierson on June 17, 2009 at 11:37 AM
What you think doesnt matter anyway since the world has already passed you by. My side won and there is no turning back now.
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 11:39 AM
Enjoy your world then and leave HA alone with your stupid drivel.

That Obama’s father is mostly Arab is blatantly ridiculous genetic rumor that Kenneth Lamb began spreading, a rumor that is made even more ridiculous by taking a look at a photo of Obama’s father. Lamb merely played on the notion which Kenyans (and many Americans) have that Muslim=Arab. Obama’s father is a 100% black African whose family is Muslim. Obama would look quite differently if his father were mostly Arab.
baldilocks on June 17, 2009 at 11:44 AM
I see that we have another one who is prone to the rumor mill.
baldilocks on June 17, 2009 at 11:46 AM
and what have you won? the chance to turn the entire country into detroit?? too funny!! you think you’ve ‘won’ when the reality is you LOSE…big time…as we have seen in every major city…democRAT run…blacks are trapped in poverty, failed school systems…and they keep voting democratic…yeah you ‘won’…loser.
right4life on June 17, 2009 at 11:47 AM
stick around, I enjoy making you look stupid…not that its very hard…
right4life on June 17, 2009 at 11:48 AM
Your last sentence is quite correct. There is no turning back for the lawlessness that is being implemented.
baldilocks on June 17, 2009 at 11:49 AM
right4life on June 17, 2009 at 11:47 AM
Personally speaking, I am doing quite well and so are most of my black friends. I won’t bore you with the details but we are not hurting at all, lets just say God is good. I’ll keep voting dem thank you.
robertnyc212 on June 17, 2009 at 11:52 AM
It’s a fact that muslem Arabs invaded Kenya to collect slaves, there is plenty of evidence that Obama is descended on his “African” side from those.
Even if, for the sake of argument, he’s not, the fact that he’s descended from slave owners on his white side is irrefutable.
