Palin accepts Letterman apology

posted at 9:28 am on June 16, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Sarah Palin put an effective end to the contretemps over David Letterman and his admittedly “coarse” jokes about Palin’s daughter.  After Letterman apologized on national television last night, Palin accepted the apology.  She also made an important point about free speech that answers some of the countercritics of the dispute:

Sarah Palin has accepted comedian David Letterman’s apology made during Monday night’s broadcast of “The Late Show” for crude jokes made about her and her teen daughters last week.

In a statement to FOXNews.com early Tuesday, the Alaska governor said, “Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.”

“Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” Palin said. “This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America’s Right to Free Speech – in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect.”

Letterman’s apology hasn’t yet quieted the calls for his firing, as Tommy Christopher noted last night after its announcement.  The boss was unimpressed, as was Laura in our Green Room.  Still, it seems hard to imagine that an effort to fire Letterman and boycott his advertisers would proceed after Palin’s gracious acceptance of Letterman’s latest retreat.  After all, Palin and her daughters were the aggrieved parties in this exchange, and if she doesn’t want to pursue it, then it will take the steam out of the effort elsewhere.

This is a smart move by Palin.  She has become more confident and capable on the national-media stage, and she needs to establish herself as a major player on policy and not just a personality.  Palin needs to rise above the petty personal attacks that tend to paint her as a damsel in distress, requiring rescue from her fans in the form of boycotts and protests.  She’s proven herself tougher than that in Alaskan politics, and Palin certainly can make the transition on a national level — as long as she doesn’t keep the focus on victimhood, no matter how legitimate it might be.

Her parting shot should also resonate.  Some pundits had cast Letterman as the victim of howling mobs looking to silence him, and Palin’s statement reminds the critics that no one disputed Letterman’s right to say whatever he wants.  That doesn’t, however, make him free from criticism, nor from legitimate free-market reaction to his caddish “jokes”.  Criticizing Letterman was every bit the same kind of free speech that Letterman enjoyed in making the jokes, as was the effort to punish his sponsors — who pay for Letterman’s speech — at the cash register.

Update: Jim Treacher says the rest of us should accept the apology, too.

Did anyone see Al Sharpton on Hannity ? I watched trying to be open minded but he went on and on about DLs joke not as offensive as what Imus said . How anyone lets him on thier show is beyond me . He has no credibility and refuses to listen to reason. If its not done to a group then its not offensive? Barf!

Boycott all advertiser’s products:

David Letterman admitted pangs of regret over jokes he made last week about Sarah Palin’s daughter.

He may be regretting them a little more now.

A Web site called FireDavidLetterman.com is organizing a rally outside Letterman’s show at the Ed Sullivan theater on Tuesday June 16 at 4:30 p.m.

And while Letterman has repeatedly reminded viewers his comments were jokes, the campaign’s organizers seem dead serious about getting the late-night stalwart canned.

Sponsored by New York State Assemblyman Brian Kolb, along with an attorney and radio host John Ziegler, the site also provides contacts – including major advertisers and CBS bigwigs – to whom people can complain about what many felt was a tasteless and potentially harmful quip by the late night talk leader.

Hopefully, this will be the last time they breathe a word about any of her daughters.

as long as she doesn’t keep the focus on victimhood, no matter how legitimate it might be.

Ed, Sarah Palin never acted like a victim.

She always merely responded to the MSM-created-drama that came flying at her, from day one.

For you to harp, focus on and stipulate that Palin was acting like a victim is to carry on the meme that the MSM intended for it to do.
And that is because you are ever too close the rear end of the media.

Those of you who are bloggers and writers, wherein you have to be glued to the news cycle, truly are biased in many aspects, in that you truly don’t understand, that we in middle-fly-over-America, don’t give a rats behind what the MSM peddles out there.

You bloggers just think that you have to respond to the media shinola in some fair way, which is pure unadulterated bullcrap.

ability and competence to govern a state depends on its electoral count ?

runner on June 16, 2009 at 10:56 AM

Being CEO of a company with $40B in revenue tends to require a different set of management skills than being CEO of a company with $1B.

As far as electoral votes, they are what makes someone President. The fact that Reagan could pick up 45/47 electoral votes from CA was a big deal.

But didn’t Palin say the military fights for my freedom of speech so I can say whatever I like?

And, really, save your “you think you’re above the military” act. I never said anything against the military, just that I believe that Palin is cynically invoking the military to gain political points.

Or, does the military not allow people to criticize Palin?

If Palin’s supporters want to continue getting Letterman fired, then so be it.

Right.

Even after he groveled and kissed ass, the left still had him fired.

What’s sauce for the goose, is sauce for the gander.

Let them have a taste of their own medicine, for a change.

It’s time that we stand up and start getting nasty before we lose this Republic to a bunch of yayhoos that have no pretense of being fair.

Remember the Golden rule? Treat others like we would like to be treated, right?

Here’s the Golden rule in action: “If I was as stupid as those yayhoos, then I would like anybody to do whatever it takes to knock some sense into me, including (but not limited to), getting Letterman fired in this case, because it teaches a lesson of fairness and equality.

If and when, this turns into a civil war with the Lefty Statists taking our rights away, then we will RUE the day that we didn’t get “nasty” to demand our equal rights.

And on the day of civil war, Ed, your brownie points for being nice are going to be remembered like so many dried-out cow pies, good for throwing at you.

In America 2009, it’s illegal “profiling” to say “hmm, we’ve had a lot of crimes committed by people with characteristics x,y,z. Maybe we should take a closer look at people with those characteristics?” At the same time, DHS statements are developed without supporting data indicated what specific groups are targeted, and what actions led to the closer inspection.

Crazy.

Sarah Palin has shown a lot of toughness and “class” in this kerfuffle–willing to speak up to defend her innocent daughter against an outrageous attack, but willing to accept a real apology when one was finally made. Maybe this should be a lesson to Letterman and his ilk that personal attacks on Sarah Palin can backfire on them, square in their wallets.

Sarah Palin’s “grace under fire” in the face of vicious personal attacks might win her sympathy from women who may not ordinarily support her politics, much as Hillary Clinton won sympathy during the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Even if Palin doesn’t want to discuss this issue any more, people may now be more willing to listen to her when she speaks about political issues.

Now, when is Letterman going to apologize to A-Rod? After all, he doesn’t really rape teenage girls during the seventh-inning stretch–he’s probably with his teammates in the dugout.

I believe someone at Big Hollywood wrote an article about Maher’s show, and he called up HBO and told them he wanted his HBO disconnected due to Maher’s content. You get a lot of people disconnecting, stop purchasing sponsor’s goodies, and you will either have him giving a sincere apology, or kicked off HBO. If we were lucky. Ann calling him out on that show would also be beneficial if for no other reason than forcing him to at least apologize.

In reality I very much know HBO will probably never force Maher out. But I can dream.

Ditto! The Flag is still flying the last time I checked.

Letterman should be fired, just like Don Imus, because that is the model we have been given.

As long as we don’t apply the same rules the Lefty Statists live by, then we are going to continue to lose this battle.
This is a mental civil war and in war, as the saying goes: “All is fair”.

This mental war is a precursor to a civil war, whereupon we will fight with our lives and blood to regain equality in the social-political arena.
IF, (not when) we lose this mental war, we WILL move on to a full blown civil war.

Bill Maher now wants to take up the mantle of Big Tool. I suppose the only advantage for Maher is that his show is on cable, on an HBO program that only those on the Left Coast watch. (But if you did see, you would have seen PJ O’Rourke provide a nice defense of conservatism and criticism of Obama, much to leg tingler Matthews’ chagrin).

Once and for all for the IDIOT LIBERALS. It’s NOT that any right winger cried foul for the Palin/slut stewardess remark. While not funny, we, along with Palin herself realizes she’s a target of liberals. It’s his attack on her daughters you morons. So Leno/Hillary jokes are allowed, (adult/politician), kid jokes are NOT allowed.

Geez these people are MORONS.

Jeff from WI on June 16, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Still, it seems hard to imagine that an effort to fire Letterman and boycott his advertisers would proceed after Palin’s gracious acceptance of Letterman’s latest retreat. After all, Palin and her daughters were the aggrieved parties in this exchange, and if she doesn’t want to pursue it, then it will take the steam out of the effort elsewhere.

For anyone who wonders, this is what makes Ed such a spineless, scraping, obsequious fruitpeel. One lame apology is all it takes for yet another leftist to keep his position as unofficial Democrat attack dog. You bet Ed.

Palin handled this masterfully. Letterman took THREE cheap personal shots at her and her daughter which reinforced a very negative stereotype that dogs her politically (i.e., that she’s a hick/hillbilly). Of course, those cheap shots exposed the media double-standard against conservatives, since the same comments against Obama or any liberal would have spelled the demise of Letterman’s career instantly (see Don Imus).

The press gave it de minimis coverage until she used her bully pulpit to force coverage, which she then leveraged to expose the double-standard and to act as a force multiplier to put pressure on Letterman. Letterman is forced to relent, issuing not one, but two apologies. At this point, Palin has forced Letterman into submission. She then graciously accepts his apology “on behalf of young women everywhere” and moves on, having changed the narrative from “haha, Letterman humiliated Palin” to “Letterman is a jackass and wow, Palin really stood up to him.” Letterman, for his part, looks the part of a bitter old man in the twilight of his career who is forced to, through gritted teeth, apologize.

BRILLIANCE.

Now we just need to get Palin to speak more authoritatively on some of the bigger issues and we might be able to rescue her yet!

Outlander on June 16, 2009 at 1:02 PM

Study history. History proves this.
Civil war starts with social issues, which then quickly morphs into economic issues, which when real impoverishment sets in, leads to a full blown, blood and guts civil war, FOUGHT FOR THE MERE SURVIVAL OF THE SPECIES, which in this case is our American species and way of life.

I think he went even further and was trying to reinforce that Palin is a hypocritical bimbo who is “slutty” and has daughters who are loose because she is a bad parent which means all Conservatives are Evil. His joke was so twisted, illogical and demeaning on so many levels.

You’re right that Sarah played this brilliantly! She turned a negative into a positive. Now Letterman will still have to deal with the many women (and men) who are still outraged about his “jokes” and will continue their protests. As Palin says, the people have as much right to protest as Dave does to make his “jokes.”

Now, when is Letterman going to apologize to A-Rod? After all, he doesn’t really rape teenage girls during the seventh-inning stretch–he’s probably with his teammates in the dugout.

Steve Z on June 16, 2009 at 11:58 AM

Yeah, what does A-Rod have to say about this? Man up A-Rod and give Letterman hell!

sarahpalinfan99 on June 16, 2009 at 1:19 PM

You can joke about statutory rape of a 14 year old and the FCC does NOTHING?? Why bother with funding that agency if CBS isn’t fined $10 million. Take it out of Dave’s pay.

What about the N.O.W. hypocrites. They better STILL be screaming for Letterman’s head on a platter.

I have to hit the rack. I’ll just close with this. For years, as long as I can remember, the media and liberals have been playing like there is some dark side to Conservatives. Like we are the mean ones.

They have successfully dehumanized us to the point where they not only feel comfort in the attacks they make on an 18 year old girl, they’ll use her 14 year old sister to facilitate it. Then they have legends of like-minded Joe Geobbel types who’ll defend the comment.

We only are expected to take so much.

We only have two cheeks.

hawkdriver on June 16, 2009 at 12:01 PM

hawkdriver is right. The Libturds have dehumanized Conservatives and Lecherman’s “joke” is an example of it; the Libturd’s defense of Lecherman’s joke is an example of it; the Libturd’s attacks on Sarah Palin’s defending her children is an example of it.

When are we going to wake up and go French on these people? I’ve had it. I want a frakkin’ divorce from these animals.

atheling on June 16, 2009 at 1:58 PM

Palin certainly can make the transition on a national level — as long as she doesn’t keep the focus on victimhood, no matter how legitimate it might be.

She never put or kept the focus on victimhood. Believing that she did just proves that some bald heads should never go out in the sun without a hat.

Richard was carrying the cash in a brief case.
Dave turned him down cold which was bad enough. Egg on Richard Simmons face “ha ha ha” from the audience.
That wasn’t enough for Dave though.
As Richard is leaving the building Dave leans out the window and yells to the street “That man is carrying $10,000″.

F funnyman with a crowbar.

I have a question for you Romney supporters.

First let me state I’d rather have Romney POTUS than Obama and have never said a bad word about Romney except that he wasn’t strong enough to finish McCain off for good when the latter was down and out in Sept. 2007.

Now to the question, from what I have read from you folks in various blogs, why are you not more vocal in opposing the Messiah and calling him out on his radical socialist-Fascist agenda than you appear to be than attacking Sarah Palin?

After all Sarah is a Republican; why is she perceived to be more of an enemy to you folks than Obama?

If you read my posting on various websites 80% are devoted to attacking Obama and 20% to advocating for Sarah. I feel it is counterproductive to attack our own.
