Palin accepts Letterman apology

Sarah Palin put an effective end to the contretemps over David Letterman and his admittedly “coarse” jokes about Palin’s daughter. After Letterman apologized on national television last night, Palin accepted the apology. She also made an important point about free speech that answers some of the countercritics of the dispute:
Sarah Palin has accepted comedian David Letterman’s apology made during Monday night’s broadcast of “The Late Show” for crude jokes made about her and her teen daughters last week.
In a statement to FOXNews.com early Tuesday, the Alaska governor said, “Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.”
“Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” Palin said. “This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America’s Right to Free Speech – in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect.”
Letterman’s apology hasn’t yet quieted the calls for his firing, as Tommy Christopher noted last night after its announcement. The boss was unimpressed, as was Laura in our Green Room. Still, it seems hard to imagine that an effort to fire Letterman and boycott his advertisers would proceed after Palin’s gracious acceptance of Letterman’s latest retreat. After all, Palin and her daughters were the aggrieved parties in this exchange, and if she doesn’t want to pursue it, then it will take the steam out of the effort elsewhere.
This is a smart move by Palin. She has become more confident and capable on the national-media stage, and she needs to establish herself as a major player on policy and not just a personality. Palin needs to rise above the petty personal attacks that tend to paint her as a damsel in distress, requiring rescue from her fans in the form of boycotts and protests. She’s proven herself tougher than that in Alaskan politics, and Palin certainly can make the transition on a national level — as long as she doesn’t keep the focus on victimhood, no matter how legitimate it might be.
Her parting shot should also resonate. Some pundits had cast Letterman as the victim of howling mobs looking to silence him, and Palin’s statement reminds the critics that no one disputed Letterman’s right to say whatever he wants. That doesn’t, however, make him free from criticism, nor from legitimate free-market reaction to his caddish “jokes”. Criticizing Letterman was every bit the same kind of free speech that Letterman enjoyed in making the jokes, as was the effort to punish his sponsors — who pay for Letterman’s speech — at the cash register.
Update: Jim Treacher says the rest of us should accept the apology, too.

Very smart moves by both parties to put this to rest. But let’s not think we have seen the last of the media attempting to turn Sarah Palin into a comedy figure. The fear and loathing of her on the Left will continue.

She is playing her hand wisely. The public recognizes that his “apology” was full of excuse & rationalization. He seemed more sorry about being misunderstood, instead of hurting someone’s feelings.
It does not appear to be over yet. Maybe she will end up helping him feep his job!

From this point on, the market should decide. I can’t boycott what I don’t watch, I got a bad vibe from Mr. Letterman some time ago. I still must point out that I fail to see why the “joke” is any better when it is about an 18 year old then a fourteen year old but I’ll let it go.

Sarah is such a classy and strong woman. Letterman is an old coot that has nothing better to do than insult republicans and their families. Get better writers and common sense Letterman or get the heck out.
jencab on June 16, 2009 at 9:41 AM
I like the little dig Palin threw in about hoping that men like Letterman “evolve.” Her acceptance was probably about as sincere as Letterman’s apology but she’s made her point and its time for her to move on. She won this round and there’s nothing to be gained by continuing the feud.
rsrobinson on June 16, 2009 at 9:41 AM
I can’t imagine how pathetically whimpy conservatives have gotten. The constant whining over a late-night comedian telling a dirty joke? Perish the thought! Wah wah wah, crying over double standards. I don’t remember Leno having to apologize ever for any Clinton jokes. And he was telling those almost every night for the past 16 years.
Typhonsentra on June 16, 2009 at 9:41 AM
It seemed much more heartfelt an acceptance than the actual apology, but as she continues to remain so much classier than her detracters I’m willing to let the whole thing rest so she can focus on billion dollar oil deals that help inch us closer to fuel independance.

Unlike the Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, who always seem to push for a continuous stream of apologies from their victims that all ring hollow in their eyes, Sarah Palin took the high road and accepted Letterman’s apology.
Frankly, I think everyone else should too. This is where “Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone” comes into play in my view.
When we do wrong and decide to legitimately apologize, forgiveness should be granted.
Not doing so puts us in the same camp as those who refused to accept endless apologies from Don Imus and Michael Richards.
Barrack on June 16, 2009 at 9:45 AM
Dave explained it all, didn’t you listen to him? He put this to rest by saying “I get it now, the problem was with the perception of what I said, not the intent”.
First it was only a joke, now it is the public’s mistaken perception of his real intent. Letterman has twisted himself into a pretzel trying to come up with a ligitimate apology for his scripted low-life joke.
Wow, those calls to the advertisers of his lame act must have been in the millions, to have the producers force Dave to ‘try’ and apologize again.

Drop this crap about policy. She is a player on national level with more impressive things to her resume than the One. The pipeline deal she brokered alone is more of an achievement in “policy” than any Republicans have in their resume. What exactly have they done for an issue like energy?
This stupid personality/policy meme was originated by the beltway GOP who want to force her hand and run the show themselves and make her a mannequin for their ends. She refuses to play their game, hence this campaign of disingenuous misinformation and Ed fell for it. That’s why she cut off all DC lackeys and running her operations now which are much smoother and less leak-prone. That was also behind the sideshow at NRSC dinner, where they managed to get her invite to speak cancel and then went to media with stories of how she is unreliable and unorganized etc.
Curiously enough, it mirrors her struggles against the GOP establishment in Alaska. She fought their entrenched corporatism and corruption and they in turn called her a lightweight” and a “populist.”
Basically, the GOP establishment is trying to co-opt her and she is not letting them. We like Sarah because she reflects the grassroots better than anyone out there and we should assist in her struggle against the beltway types. Even Rush Limbaugh said as much.
As for the protest, many PUMAs are also joining in and it’s going ahead. Sarah is out of it now. Its between us and Lecherman and we’ll get the bully off the air. The best reasonings are here and here.

I think it depends on the woman…when I think of the term “broad” I think of someone like Betty Davis, a very tough woman…so to me, it’s not so bad.
I think of the term “chick” as Goldie Hawn in Laugh In – clueless about everything…so I don’t like it very much.
It’s really subjective, I guess…
…well, except for bi*ch. That is a no no.
ladyingray on June 16, 2009 at 9:50 AM
For Letterman to be forced to apologize in an appropriate manner, it exposed the multitude of brainwashed liberals, for what they are, They presented excuses for his actions and blamed those who would object to what he said as those who cannot comprehend the “the joke”. Accountability for lewd remarks about someone’s family was completely foreign to the liberal psyche until now.

The petty personal attacks are not her fault — she has consistently taken the high road in her responses to said attacks. She has shown consistently that she is not a “damsel in distress” — she has stalwartly defended her family when they are targeted, and has cogently defended her political positions. She has never called for a boycott or a protest — that has fallen to her fans, who do have the right, methinks, to ask for such things.
As for Palin becoming a “damsel in distress” due to her fan’s acts, look at how Obama’s fanpeople defend him — and he’s a male. It’s so bad on Obama’s side that even marketing a doll with the likenesses of his children elicits boycott threats. Holding Palin’s fans to a different standard than Obama’s is sexist.

Long time listener first time caller.
With all due respect to Palin and our troops, how exactly have they died to retain our free speech? Kick the British out? Well, you can slag the Queen off in England today and they obviously never kicked the British out. Kept the Germans out? Hitler wouldn’t own America today if we didn’t attend WWII as Buchanan made clear in his controversial new book The Unnecessary War.
I’m glad our boys are fighting Islam abroad and I am proud they were noble enough to fight the Nazis but it’s hard to argue it’s affected our free speech in any way, shape or form.

Sexual innuendo, no matter what the woman’s age, is hurtful, and not a “throwaway” as you would put it. In one case, the target is a 50-something career politician who is fully capable of defending herself, while, in the other case, it’s a 14-year old child who depends on her parents for defense.

There was never indication that Bristol was the target and plenty of evidence to the contrary. This was his cowardly first attempt to get out of trouble and the media continues to aid him.
He kept talking about his intent. Well his intent was to insult and hurt another citizen because he didn’t approve of her beliefs. What he was doing, and everyone must be clear on this because they have and will continue to do it, was continuiing with the planned and targeted abuse by the left of anyone they fear. They attempt to destroy through these kinds of tactics anyone with the temerity to stand up to them and speak their minds. This, in the long run, was just more of the lefts attempts to take away the freedom of speach of a large part of America through abuse and intimidation.
peacenprosperity on June 16, 2009 at 10:04 AM
Hillary sexual jokes, pre-2007, were normally in the context of Bill and the fact that she stood by her man when other wives having been humiliated in that high-profile a manner would have either dumped and/or clobbered him. So what negative jokes there were centered more around the unsaid idea that Hillary craved power so much she would overlook adultry.
But it’s not until you get to the 2008 campaign that the sexual jokes about Hillary become similar to the ones against Palin. And that’s mainly because Hillary was not the candidate of the left against Obama — she was seen as the more centerist of the two, and therefore, in the eyes of the entertainment left, no longer deserving of the protection they had provided her in the past.
Once the gloves came off then, yes, her treatment was just as bad as Palin’s, and was worth condemnation (which a number of pro-Hillary women’s groups tried to do last year, but with only slightly more success than the Palin supporters had until now).

No, unless you’re arguing that you actually thought the joke was about anyone other than Bristol which err…. yeah… that says more about you than anything else.
And as for the unfairness of attacking Bristol but not Chelsea or the Obama kids there’s a difference that should be obvious but apparently is a bit much for you people: There place in the public spotlight never was as anything more than the children of a politician. Bristol meanwhile appears on television and magazines independent of her mother and is a grown women.
And besides that, are comedians just supposed to ignore the mess that is her life? Constant infighting with her kid’s baby-daddy, it’s like an episode of Jerry Springer.
