Dodd’s re-election chances have been severely damaged by the partial revelations concerning the favors he got from Countrywide, especially in light of the fact that, as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, he is the primary Senator responsible for oversight over institutions like Countrywide. As the information concerning the extent of Dodd’s entanglement with Countrywide continues to leak out, the ethical problems for Dodd (including repeated and intentional understatement of the value of assets in his Senate disclosure) continue to pile up: A year ago, Portfolio magazine reported that Dodd was enjoying more than $800,000 in favorable loans from subprime mortgage titan Countrywide Financial as a member of the “Friends of Angelo.” That was the exclusive club of borrowers given special treatment at the behest of Countrywide co-founder and president Angelo Mozilo. Why is this so surprising. Look how many Democrats claim they got into politics because of the Kennedys. A letter from a congressman won’t cut it, fellas. BofA is bound by numerous federal and state laws to protect the information of their clients. A subpeona will do the trick, but from this report, I don’t see one of those in the offing any time soon.

As to the possible infractions that Issa wishes to review, I can only think of two basic issues. One, did BofA engage in a pattern of discrimiation against the majority of their clients by offering lower fees and rates to thier VIP clients solely because they were VIP’s? Or were the VIP”s just afforded better terms because they were more credit worthy? ie: higher ficos, long term employment stability, larger loan amounts, more assets, lower loan-to-value ratios. If one could prove that the VIP’s were given better deals then similarly qualified applicants at the same point in time, you’ld have an argument.

The second issue is consumer or loan officer loan fraud. Did the borrowers and or their loan officers submit loan applicaitons with bogus information? This is what brought down AZ Governor Fife Symington..he submitted three loan applicaitons within a short period of time, and all three had different versions of his tax returns. That’s a no-no kids.
