Dems resist requesting records for Friends of Angelo

It’s one of the most infamous chapters in the housing-market meltdown, but Democrats apparently don’t want to shine on a light on Countrywide Mortgage’s Friends of Angelo program.  Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) sent written requests for the records to Bank of America, which bought the bankrupt Countrywide after the housing-bubble collapse, but Issa’s counterpart on the House Oversight Committee, Edolphus Towns (D-NY), refused to co-sign the letter:

The top Republican on the House Oversight panel is seeking all documents related to a high-profile VIP program at now-defunct mortgage lender Countrywide Financial that benefited a slew of government officials, including two Democratic senators.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is requesting by Wednesday eight years’ worth of documents related to the “Friends of Angelo” program, named after Countrywide’s then-CEO, Angelo Mozilo. The program allegedly offered better loan terms or waived fees for influential borrowers, such as Democratic Sens. Kent Conrad (N.D.) and Chris Dodd (Conn.).

Issa’s written request to Bank of America, which acquired Countrywide Financial, comes without the signature of Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.). Issa’s staff said it was recently told that Towns would not sign the letter, an Issa spokesman said.

“Currently the chairman is focused on the financial crisis and stimulus oversight,” Jenny Rosenberg, Towns’s spokeswoman, wrote in an e-mail.

Gee, now they’re too busy to worry about the “culture of corruption”?  When did that happen?  Oh, right, when it turned out that most of Angelo’s “friends” were Democrats.

Nothing to see here, apparently.  Move along.

Nothing will come of this now. If Repubicans ever get power again and try to investigate this stuff, people will insist that it is old news and not worth talking about.

myrenovations on June 16, 2009 at 5:09 PM

The Dem party is so blatant in their outright disregard for the intelligence of the voting public. If the public ever found out all the shenanigans the dems have pulled, they would be run out of town with pitchforks & torches.

The key is, how will the Public find out?

Yes the adults are in charge… the adult leeches.

Very spineless and slimy they are.

ajacksonian on June 16, 2009 at 5:10 PM

It’s Obamanation Damn-it

bwconq on June 16, 2009 at 5:10 PM

Dishonest, and corrupt. Not one, I can’t count even one instance, where the Dems have even considered an investigation into Dodd, and others. Oh, they thru Burris out, but that hardly counts, when he didn’t last but a few months.

Seems, if you have any amount of time in Congress…that garners you a pass. So why not just go out, and shoot someone. No one can touch you!

capejasmine on June 16, 2009 at 5:12 PM

Can’t Fox Business News request these documents through the courts? Come on Mr. Cavuto!

PappaMac on June 16, 2009 at 5:13 PM

Give the statists credit in marketing. They can make the corrupt, racists, intolerant, crazy, etc. labels stick to the GOP when they are at best the same as the GOP. In the reality I see, much much worse than the GOP. I wish we had the marketing machine they have.

Chairman Towns is so “focused” on stimulus oversight that he can’t take five seconds to sign a letter….!!!???!!

LASue on June 16, 2009 at 5:18 PM

Too busy to sign a letter? That takes me all of about two seconds. He must have trouble spelling his own name. He has to turn around the name placard on his desk to figure it out.

Big John on June 16, 2009 at 5:18 PM

LASue, great minds and all that…

The “marketing machine” of Socialism is ignorance and illiteracy. That’s precisely why they targeted and took over the public schools. The followers of Socialism are cattle, waiting to be led by the State. We, on the other hand, have an inbred distrust of the State. We are the few, and they are the many. We see through the lies – they don’t; because for them, it’s like expecting your father and mother to lie to you.

OhEssYouCowboys on June 16, 2009 at 5:20 PM

P.S. WashJeff – I was just venting. I know that you didn’t need any explanation from me.

Why am I not surprised?

The Dems have told TARP recipient B. of A. to lose pertinent records as they assimilate Countrywide.

Careful about using the word “inbred” Cowboy. The ignorant lefties will take you literally. Maybe “ingrained” may be a better choice.

A letter from a congressman won’t cut it, fellas. BofA is bound by numerous federal and state laws to protect the information of their clients. A subpeona will do the trick, but from this report, I don’t see one of those in the offing any time soon.

As to the possible infractions that Issa wishes to review, I can only think of two basic issues. One, did BofA engage in a pattern of discrimiation against the majority of their clients by offering lower fees and rates to thier VIP clients solely because they were VIP’s? Or were the VIP”s just afforded better terms because they were more credit worthy? ie: higher ficos, long term employment stability, larger loan amounts, more assets, lower loan-to-value ratios. If one could prove that the VIP’s were given better deals then similarly qualified applicants at the same point in time, you’ld have an argument.

The second issue is consumer or loan officer loan fraud. Did the borrowers and or their loan officers submit loan applicaitons with bogus information? This is what brought down AZ Governor Fife Symington..he submitted three loan applicaitons within a short period of time, and all three had different versions of his tax returns. That’s a no-no kids.

More Global Warming\Climate Change marketing from the White House. In a year that has been down right chilly (Average daily temperature in Chicago 7 degrees below normal). They want me to believe earth is warming? C’mon.

I am constantly preping my 7 yr old son son that this stuff is a bunch a huewy. Going have to undone the economic and history stuff when he is older.

Big John on June 16, 2009 at 5:24 PM

Which is precisely my point about them. Ignorance and illiteracy dictate their every thought.

“Inbred” meaning “from birth” or “occurring naturally.”

OhEssYouCowboys on June 16, 2009 at 5:30 PM

Would love to see how long that list is…and the number of politicans on it.

You’d see Dodd et al. talking all sorts of crazy in justifying things.

When is somebody going to actually sue Countrywide regarding this and there is that little nasty thing out there called “discovery”. Bring it on.

Or maybe Rob Simmons, Dodd’s Republican opponent in the 2010 CT Senate race. Even if he gets stonewalled, he can make it a campaign issue.

Steve Z on June 16, 2009 at 6:02 PM

Nothing surprising. Democrats are corrupt. Democrat voters are scum. It works well together.

Jeff from WI on June 16, 2009 at 6:14 PM

Hey guys, I just notice that Angelo Mozilo has a profile on Facebook. Maybe we should all try to become a “Friend of Angelo.”

year_of_the_dingo on June 16, 2009 at 6:22 PM

Is there a single Democrat not involved in corruption or cover-up? Their own Speaker claims the CIA lied to congress and provides no evidence. Democrats are NOT working for the people; they are too busy breaking the law and covering for each other.

Release the records! Now!

Why is this so surprising. Look how many Democrats claim they got into politics because of the Kennedys. The Kennedy family made it’s fortune thanks to bootlegging, labor racketeering, mafia connections, treasonous nazi connections. There might be no family more scummy in the 20th century in America then the Kennedys.

Or, if it can be shown that there was a quid pro quo between Dodd and Countrywide. That one is gonna be hard to prove without a red-hot-flaming gun.

Where’s Fitzgerald when you need him.

Proving yet again how powerful the MSM is. Without their attention the Dems have nothing to worry about.
