ABC to broadcast town hall on health care — from the White House

The most important domestic policy debate in a generation, with nothing less than the nature of the relationship between American citizens and their government at stake, and not only isn’t the GOP invited but the media’s setting up camp literally inside Obama’s house. Imagine a Republican Congress introducing a bill to repeal Social Security and Fox News running a special on it live from RNC headquarters. I’m honestly surprised, although it makes a certain sort of ruthless sense: If, as many righties have speculated, The One’s trying to ram through as many Great Society programs as he can before the political pendulum swings back to the center, the media might as well drop all pretense of objectivity and go for broke too. What’s more important, after all, impartial coverage or “free” health care?
On the night of June 24, the media and government become one, when ABC turns its programming over to President Obama and White House officials to push government run health care — a move that has ignited an ethical firestorm!
Highlights on the agenda:
ABCNEWS anchor Charlie Gibson will deliver WORLD NEWS from the Blue Room of the White House.
The network plans a primetime special — ‘Prescription for America’ — originating from the East Room, exclude opposing voices on the debate.
The RNC fears it’ll be a “glorified infomercial” but ABC assures us the infomercial will be fully under its control, with no input from Team Barry — except, of course, for the use of the White House to broadcast the special and that evening’s airing of ABC World News. Oh, and the total lack of any official Republican counterpoint, which Obama surely could have insisted on on if he was as serious about making this a “bipartisan” issue as he claims. To see how open and honest the debate on this subject really is, read Geraghty’s analysis of the left’s latest Two Minutes Hate, in which the AMA suddenly finds itself targeted by Media Matters, Kossacks, and assorted other Obama water-carriers for daring to oppose a public plan. Like I say, they’re going for broke.

What is absurd is any adult expecting a fellow citizen to pay for something they should be responsible for themselves? Are you not ashamed to be a social parasite?

I sent a comment to ABC news, link provided by someone on the earlier thread about this, and this is the reply I got back: As you can imagine, we receive thousands of messages a day from our viewers and while we appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback regarding our programming, we are not able to respond to each one directly.
We encourage you to continue to communicate with us!
I wish I had the link, but flood them with you outrage.

Why don’t you just move to the UK?

Guys,
When voicing your opinion on the ABCNEWS blog entry (http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/06/abc-news-responds-to-rnc-letter), don’t let the debate be about health care.
Make sure this debate is about AND STAYS about the government and media joining forces.
Don’t allow the topic to change.
Alexander on June 16, 2009 at 2:45 PM
You don’t get it. None of this has anything to do with taking care of people. Obama couldn’t give a flying shyt about anyone. It’s all about money and control.
Government run anything sucks badly, not to mention the enormous cost and reduced service. The elderly will be targeted. They will let them die. People who do anything to excess or smoke or drink will be targeted. No treatment. If you’re fat … forget it.
Get a grip. They’re out to usurp you, the people. They want to control every aspect of your life. Make you conform to what they want.
They want to bankrupt private insurance and leave no choice for anyone.
Wake up.

AnninCA on June 16, 2009 at 2:47 PM
I know this won’t be a popular view, but I think this is a good sign, honestly. There’s no Republican rebuttal, and the “unbiased” pressers are so deep in the tank they’re part of the bottom. This is known to everyone but those pressers themselves. But the very fact they’re going all-in like this shows their desperation to get more raw eyeballs. Which the country not only refuses to give more, but those who’re already there are fleeing the sinking ship in record numbers (just ask Kute Katie). Americans have finely-tuned “BS Detectors” that can very easily pick up the fawning propaganda of State-run media in pretty much all of its forms. This “townhall” won’t help ABC, it’s going to hurt them.
Now the worst thing the Republicans can do is demand free air-time for a rebuttal. It plays into the hands of the Administration and their allies in Congress, who’re trying to establish a basis for the return of the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE. We don’t need airtime on ABC to rebut – we simply need to get our own ideas to the people directly. Trying to do so over the old “Big Three” networks is a fools’ game, as too few people bother with them anymore. What we need to do is get our ideas out over the internet, over the radio, and through those few remaining TV networks with a shred of honesty left to them (ie, FNC). We need to use C-SPAN/2 to protest the current state of affairs, and ad buys on basic-cable stations (not just FNC, either; as much as I hate to admit it Comedy Central would be the best place to go, to steal a march on Jon Stewart) to get a concise point-by-point version of our ideas out there. What we absolutely do NOT need is to fall into an obvious trap. If they weren’t so desperate, the Democrats would’ve done a better job of hiding it!

And how exactly do they screw people?
I have employer provided insurance where they pay part, and I pay part. Works great for me and my family. I get coverage, the insurance company makes a profit – we’re both happy with the arrangement.
BacaDog on June 16, 2009 at 2:48 PM
I have no sympathy for those with no health insurance. After food, your next priority is health insurance. You purchase health insurance before purchasing a car, before a house, before savings – period.
If you came to take money out of my wallet, you would find that I am armed. Do you think I am any less amenable to theft when it comes in the form of a payroll deduction? Just because some don’t want to pay for their health care does not mean that I should be forced to pay it for them. Health care is not a right, it is a good, and everyone who wants it can pay for it, or do without.

Ya, I’d like healthcare reform, too. Does that mean I want Obama coming up with a plan to make it worse and cost the country billions? Hell, no.
You want to reform healthcare?
Limit the malpractice awards…. oops, can’t do that, the trial lawyers pay big money to the Dems.
Close the borders and stop giving illegals free emergency room care for the sniffles …. oops can’t do that, that’s votes. It’s also racist! OH NO.
We could also save money from all the single moms, living off of welfare, kept on welfare for generations by the Dems, pretending they don’t know who the father is to get their kids free health care.
What people fail to realize, is that eventually there won’t be enough people who contribute to the country to pay for all of those who don’t.
Everything Obama is doing is designed to make more and more people completely dependent on government.
I can talk like Panetta and say Obama is almost like a medieval lord, and he needs more serfs.
I could be as absurd as Panetta and say Obama is almost like a plantation owner.

Ann:
I think the Democrats want power and they think that taking over health care is the best way to get it.
I was born in 1951 and I am sure that a larger portion of the American population has insurance today in 2009 than had it back then. But then again, health care was not that expensive then and people did not need it.
40% of the people who do not have health insurance are between the ages of 18 and 34 and a lot of them do not want it. They don’t even think about it. They are young and healthy.
I think Obama will ration care and bankrupt the country in the process of trying to gain political power.

Ann, the public option simply isn’t necessary. Tell me what the public option accomplishes that a set of federally chartered nonprofit co-ops competing alongside private insurance won’t accomplish, provided the other reforms (no preexisting conditions, etc.) are passed.
I asked you this the other day and never got an answer.
The co-ops are not some crazy right-wing fallback plan, either — they’re Kent Conrad’s current preference as an alternative to the public option.

I also read that this trillion plan would only actually insure about a third of the people who do not have insurance…my guess is that since health insurance is mandatory in this plan it will force the remaining people to buy it or pay a penalty. It will also try to force businesses to provide health insurance. I wonder how many people will lose their jobs over this?

Sorry it took me so long to respond.
But life stories aside, even Colin Powell acknowledged that a majority of Americans are too lazy to think for themselves.
That’s my point. Just because a majority of people think that having totally subsidized health care would be great, doesn’t make it a smart idea.
And this is why we have a representative democracy in the first place…b/c given:
1. if we had totaly democracy
2. the majority of people are ignorant, uneducated, or both
then we’d vote ourselves into oblivion.

The surveys show that the majority of people are for universal health care – that is, some kind of insurance for everyone. That number shifts to minority (by a fair amount) when asked if they would agree if it means longer waits, rationing, etc.
Also, the vast majority are happy with their private insurance and don’t want to lose it. Their virtually only concern is about the cost of it.
I think this means the vast majority want everyone to have some sort of health care, but don’t want to have it forced on themselves, either directly by, or as a consequence of, universal health care.
Alana on June 16, 2009 at 3:35 PM

AllahPundit: There’s one thing wrong with the premise that Obama will try to cram as many leftist boondoggles into government before the pendulum swings back to center. Obama is trying to enact so much government power so it never swings back. So that if the American people ever manage to wake up it will be too late. That way power gained isn’t lost. If you think Obama wants to play by the rules, or ever give up power, think again.

I also think that Ann is misunderstanding the idea of what people might mean by universal health care. Most people do not want to see people dying for a lack of health care. Most people like the idea that most people should be able to afford health care. I too think that universal health care would be a laudable goal. But I don’t think that government mandated health care is the best way to meet that goal. And my guess is a lot of other people feel the same way. That is why people tend to sound more conservative on the subject when the issue becomes more specific..i.e. do you like your health care do you want to keep what you have…that sort of thing.

I was agreeing with you. We have personal experience with Medicaid, Medicare and the VA from the consumer side. (It remains to be seen if Social Security will be there when we’re supposed to be SS consumers.) None of those programs are run well now and the costs to the taxpayer are staggering.
I’m immensely grateful to have private health insurance and for the excellent quality of care that I receive through it. I’m immensely grateful for the ability to fire physicians who don’t meet our standards of care. Government run care can’t possibly meet our standards and that’s based on first hand experience.
obladioblada on June 16, 2009 at 3:52 PM
330 million people minus 47 million “uninsured” equals 283 million people who will pay for those 47 million.
If socialist health care costs 1 trillion, divide that by 283 million and we’ll each being paying $3,533 to cover this. Of course it’ll cost us much more because the majority of people pay little or no taxes.

Why isn’t there a 527 group running commercials round-the-clock showing grandpa on a five year waiting list to get his hip surgery or cancer patients dying from not getting chemo soon enough because of the limitations in socialized health care? It would be one of the most effective ways to stir up the average American who isn’t normally politically plugged in.

You can add me to the group. I think for me maybe “hate” is a bit strong a word – or something. I find it hard to use.
In any case, I definitely see the government as the enemy for the first time in my life, in that they are working against me, and don’t have ANY of my interests in mind. And in fact, are actively and passionately working to harm me. While telling me it is for the “greater good.” (I.e., their buddies.)

Since we are all getting screwed I wouldn’t guess it matters.

ABC: The All Barack Channel!
I’m surprised that MSNBC isn’t throwing a hissy fit the size of Godzilla (or Olbermann’s ego) over not being given this distinct “honor”.

This is horrible. ABC News is running an infomercial 50x shadier than anything Billy Mays or the ShamWow guy would ever DREAM of running. They are lending ABC News’s imprimateur of impartiality and objectivity to an hour long campaign commercial for our Messiah and his friends. This is exactly like those late night infomercials for colon cleansers that feature fake “talk show” formats that try to trick you into believing the informercial is somehow objective.
What do we do about it? First, destroy its credibility. Call it an infomercial run by the All Barack Channel. Delegitimize it. Second, get another network – Fox News or someone else – to run a response to the infomercial that provides opposing viewpoints. Third, hopefully a physician’s group or health insurance consortium will start running paid ads challenging healthcare nationalization.
The White House must have gotten to ABC News. Maybe Jake Tapper ticked off Robert Gibbs one too many times. . .

Consider that we taxpayers are providing for our own subjugation. The Statists need the taxpayers to keep on working and producing so that they can forcibly take from us and use these funds to buy votes.
