ABC to broadcast town hall on health care — from the White House

The most important domestic policy debate in a generation, with nothing less than the nature of the relationship between American citizens and their government at stake, and not only isn’t the GOP invited but the media’s setting up camp literally inside Obama’s house. Imagine a Republican Congress introducing a bill to repeal Social Security and Fox News running a special on it live from RNC headquarters. I’m honestly surprised, although it makes a certain sort of ruthless sense: If, as many righties have speculated, The One’s trying to ram through as many Great Society programs as he can before the political pendulum swings back to the center, the media might as well drop all pretense of objectivity and go for broke too. What’s more important, after all, impartial coverage or “free” health care?
On the night of June 24, the media and government become one, when ABC turns its programming over to President Obama and White House officials to push government run health care — a move that has ignited an ethical firestorm!
Highlights on the agenda:
ABCNEWS anchor Charlie Gibson will deliver WORLD NEWS from the Blue Room of the White House.
The network plans a primetime special — ‘Prescription for America’ — originating from the East Room, exclude opposing voices on the debate.
The RNC fears it’ll be a “glorified infomercial” but ABC assures us the infomercial will be fully under its control, with no input from Team Barry — except, of course, for the use of the White House to broadcast the special and that evening’s airing of ABC World News. Oh, and the total lack of any official Republican counterpoint, which Obama surely could have insisted on on if he was as serious about making this a “bipartisan” issue as he claims. To see how open and honest the debate on this subject really is, read Geraghty’s analysis of the left’s latest Two Minutes Hate, in which the AMA suddenly finds itself targeted by Media Matters, Kossacks, and assorted other Obama water-carriers for daring to oppose a public plan. Like I say, they’re going for broke.

If Iranians had the right to bear arms, could the Royal Guards be allowed to randomly shoot into crowds. American has a long history of peaceful power transfers in part because we have the Second Amendment. When citizens don’t have the right to bear arms, it requires violence to make any kind of political change.

Wow.
ABC was far and away the LEAST biased for Obama. Tapper asked tough questions of both sides, and Charlie Gibson (even though he was tough in the palin interview, but she didn’t do great either) would at least always ask a devil’s advocate of Obama in the ‘analysis’ part like “but Obama has no money to do this” (though George steph or some other lib would say ‘oh it will work charlie’ and charlie would say ‘We’ll see…’)
I’m torn because now it’s over the edge. Their medical correspondent Tim Johnson is a HUGE obamacare nut, so I’m sure he’s pushing it.
Craziest thing, last night, george stephanopolus was filling in for charlie, and led with “protests in Iran and President Obama has clearly come out with a vigorous moral support of the protestors” or some shtick like that… and Obama had said NOTHING. It’s like we’re living in some dream world…
You don’t have to love ABC, but they’re the most ‘neutral’ of the MSM out there (or can you imagine say, NBC running “The Path to 9/11″ during election season 2006). abc USED to be abc is far and away the LEAST biased and most “neutral” that the MSM is (which isnt saying much when your competition is bowing to obama on NBC or forging bush memos on CBS)
Here’s the abc blog entry about it, and submit your own comment: Obama bots are out in full force attacking “faux news”

Said it in the headlines and I’ll say it here.
This is obvious campaigning and political speech and, thusly, falls into the realm of campaign finance control laws.
ABC is NOT doing this out of the goodness of their hearts, they’re getting kickbacks for this exclusivity.
This needs to be investigated.

I posted this in the headlines but I’m wondering as individual ABC affiliates hold FCC licenses, wouldn’t this be a violation if they broadcast this? Can’t we file an FCC complaint once it is broadcast or block it somehow?
I know that boycotting advertisers is a good way to go but I would like to see a couple of million FCC complaints on file when the stations have to renew their license.

It’s not “Obama’s house.”
The GOP never advocated “repealing Social Security.”
It’s not only “the right” that has speculated Obama is trying to cram through as many leftist policies as he can. The “left” has acknowledged that is what he is doing, and supported it.

Phone privacy good.
Medical privacy not necessary.

I’m not sure why people use the term ‘mainstream media’ anymore. Viewership numbers show that the alphabet networks are pulling in 20 million viewers combined for their ‘news’ shows at best. That is less than ten percent of the adult population.

They should’ve been boycotting all these shows for some time now, the MSM has had as its agenda for years now to not give a new William F. Buckley any platform of theirs and not allow a new Reagan type charismatic conservative to rise in power(see Sarah Palin).

ABC does have a right to air whatever it wants and in whatever format it wants. The free market decides whether it rises or fails with its product. Let them compete with MSNBC and carve up its tiny niche market.
However, if I were a Disney stockholder I’d be really p!ssed that they are deliberately tarnishing their brand by their overt move to advocacy journalism.

Standard tactic at the local level, too. Able dissenters are simply not invited, so public never hears from them. Since most panels on health care are funded one way or another by the left, leftie propositions are the only ones that make the news.

If FoxNews was smart, they will run the COUNTER information program at the same time with an expert Health Care panel and present BOTH sides to this issue. Then run commercials on the ABC stations ahead of time and tell viewers to watch foxnews instead for a fair and balanced presentation on this issue.
To be fair and balanced, the Americans have to know they will be taxed on their health care benefits if they get them now from their employment. They have to know they will have to wait 2 years for referrals to specialists, as a minimum (look north to Canada and see what their wait is). They have to know that the US Government will ration care and let people DIE of things that can be cured because it is cheaper to let them DIE. They have to know that a government bureaucrat will be in charge of whether they can live or die. They have to know that they will not get breast cancer drugs (See UK program). They have to know that eventually all choices will be run out of the industry if the government is allowed to form a plan. The government’s plan will undercut private insurance (planned this way to turn the whole thing into a single payer system).
Need I say more? We will NOT get any of this from the slobbering ABC presentation.
karenhasfreedom on June 16, 2009 at 2:25 PM
Not yet, they will just have to take it a step further at some point. MSM brinkmanship.
NBC carried out the Limbaugh attacks for Obama, then there was the whole Brian Williams bow.
ABC has taken it a step further to curry favor with Dear Leader.
I assume it is CBS’ turn next, unless NBC decides to breach etiquitte (much like Flick’s jump form double-dog dare to triple-dog dare).
Perhaps MTV could film a reality show from inside the White House, too.
