Quotes of the day
posted at 10:30 pm on June 15, 2009 by Allahpundit
“Finally, here’s a second thing Sarah could learn from Hillary: It’s the substance that sustains, not the exposure. In terms of raw talent on the hustings, Sarah Palin is far more of a political natural than Hillary Clinton. She might get somewhere in the long run if she would just go away in the short run and read some books. Her problem is that she thinks the popular culture is the culture. She has no context, no knowledge of the world to offset her obsessive Nixonian flailings about how everyone is belittling her stature as the hardworking governor of Alaska. Her answers on CNN about Pentagon cuts in missile defense that affect her state were as halting and glassy-eyed as a novice U.N. translator’s attempt to grapple with Uzbek in his earphones.
Yet if Palin added some depth to her knowledge, she has so much she could offer.”
***
“And God bless Sarah Palin. What would we do without her for entertainment? She’s our very own political reality show. An American Political Idol finalist. She’s like watching a moose on roller skates. Never graceful. Always riveting.
Yet, despite buckets of criticism constantly flung her way, she’s got a lot going for her. Just like George W. Bush, people and the media constantly ‘misunderestimate’ her. No matter what you think about her politics, this woman is tenacious, fearless, and savvy. John McCain’s former chief of staff, Mark Salter, said it best: ‘What she knows, you can’t teach. And what she doesn’t know, she can learn.’
She got thrown in the deep end before she could swim. As my friend Stuart Stevens said, ‘It was like picking someone of the street and telling them they had to take the MCATs the next day.’ But, she dog-paddled furiously, thrashed about, made a lot of waves, and managed not to drown. And now she’s got her water wings. And she’s working on her strokes. And by 2012 or 2016, she’ll be a lot stronger.”

There were the years of 1-2 hour each way public transit and the years of 1-1.5 hours driving each way. I’ve always lived in or near a large urban area. Sometimes on the outside, commuting in, sometimes the other way around.

Loxodonta on June 16, 2009 at 12:43 AM
Always east coast but never New York, I’ve only been in there a few times and could not handle it. I felt like an ant, but I should be an uncle.
Loxodonta on June 16, 2009 at 12:44 AM
That is something I don’t miss. Back when I used to be a person and had a real job, my typical commute was an hour each way. Traffic in my area has gotten much worse in the past 5-10 years. When I do have to venture on the highways, back-ups seem to start as early as 5am.
It could be worse, when I lived closer to the District, I drove in bumper to bumper rolling road blocks that sometimes got up to 70mph. It was enough to make the old palms sweat.
Laura in Maryland on June 16, 2009 at 12:46 AM
NYC is a love/hate thing for me.
I’ve always lived AROUND it (in it for only a year or so).
My family has always been IN it, so I’ve been there more times than I’ve hit on women on this website.
But IDK — I like the vastness of the five boroughs, how you can see so much and simply lose yourself, but I hate how my hair is so dirty by the end of the day from the city air. It’s stale air, and I get sick of it quick. I’m used to the sea everday.
Anywho, I hope you have a good night. Try not to fall down (wear a helmet). Have a nice shot of brandy and go to bed!
blatantblue on June 16, 2009 at 12:47 AM
Lox, none of my business… but I kinda feel you were unfair to lig. I am a little surprised at you. Thats not normally you.

Americannodash on June 16, 2009 at 12:48 AM
Yes, but they will keep repeating it, until a majority of the voting public is “sure” it’s “true.”
And, they’ll add the liberal support joists that they use whenever they have no substance, and need to make something seem solid. You can already see it in the QOTD’s above.
“Every thinking person knows…”
“The American people believe…”
“We can all agree that…”
Whenever, by explicit comment or inference, they include these kind of phrases, you know they have nothing to back their position.
BTW – still laughing about the whaling post, and the random bar whacko with the Moon Landing fixation.

Hi Mass
bazil9 on June 16, 2009 at 12:50 AM
In later years, one reason I worked longer hours was to avoid rush hour traffic. I worked another hour and would save about an hour, plus incredible anxiety.
When I was young, public transit was always fun. Since I never became acculturated to this country, I would look at people and smile and start up conversations and get rtobbed and beaten a few times. But it was mostly fun.

Great idea Halcro’s brother, but there’s one problem: BOR, like him or not, doens’t make sick jokes about 14-year olds.

That’s terrible! I was very fortunate that I never took mass transit to work, but I used to park in what was an old warf in an iffy part of the city (now a Ritz Carlton).
Laura in Maryland on June 16, 2009 at 12:56 AM

Loxodonta on June 16, 2009 at 12:58 AM

Laura in Maryland on June 16, 2009 at 12:59 AM
It wasn’t bad at all. I’ve seen tens of thousands of people, talked with thousands of very interesting people, several of which robbed me and a some of which beat me up. Good odds.
Loxodonta on June 16, 2009 at 1:00 AM
Sarah may or may not be it – I think the larger question is one of identity of the conservative voting block.
It really is up to us to determine that.
My worry is that we look for approval from all the wrong sources, and hope we educate ourselves enough to be well armed to rebuke all the Dem nonsense that is hell bent on destroying the Country I love.
Palin is Governor of one of the most powerful States in the Union and she has done a bang up job and has weathered a storm of b**lshit.
Give the same circumstances to one individual in the
current admin I think the results much different. I say respectfully. Amateurs. One and all. Disgraceful.
Great post Mac Leod.

Hello back!
As usual late to the thread.
I was reading through all the labor stories.
My wife gave me 4 great kids.
I’ve had lung surgery, been thrown from a moving car, and would never, ever, think about going through labor.
massrighty on June 16, 2009 at 1:03 AM
You’re a gem.
Laura in Maryland on June 16, 2009 at 1:03 AM
These people (on both sides, Noonan and Brown, Brooks and Dowd) have conversations at cocktail parties complimenting each other on their creative putdowns of Sarah. Oh the joy to have them seeth over their chardonnay while she takes the oath of office.
Ted Torgerson on June 16, 2009 at 1:06 AM
I remember The Wall, but don’t know if I ever interacted with it. Yes. the language and behavior patterns are similar between the two.
I’m beginning to develop theories and strategies regarding certain Hot Air trolls. Don’t know enough about this one, though. However, I think I know why the trolls have been frequenting the headlines instead of the blog lately. And I also think I’ve actually gotten a few to quit posting in my presence, like I have body odor or something. I hope I’m not offending non-trolls. That isn’t my intent. And sorry I type so slow, but it’s the klutz stuff at work.

the only troll I “miss” is getalife. I’ve been told that it sometimes caused much disturbance, but In the threads I found it, other commentators were almost always laughing at it’s inane Valley-Girl-Zen-Sufi-Haiku talk. I thought it was funny.

massrighty, my mom was one of seven (she’s the only one still alive, going strong at 83), I’m one of five, but I’ve got just two — took us a long time to connect, but 2 in 17 months will give you some pause (and not enough time alone to have any more).

I smell FEAR in those QOTD posts.
They FEAR Palin!!!
And rightly so. Where ever she goes, she draws 20K+ crowds, but WHY?
It’s the message. She speaks in realities and focused truths to conservationism. Not the platitudes of a community organizer that openly lies to the American People, some that still obtusely follow Oboobama.
2010 cannot come fast enough

windsocks, eh?
OK.
What is that supposed to mean??
Newt is an untrustworthy guy. Cheated on wives, cheated while in congress, unethical, sat with Nancy Pelosi on a couch to support Global Warming hysteria…lost a debate with Al Gore on Global Warming….
Huck is a bigoted tool. A failure of a governor. An empty suit that springs offspring that hangs dogs for fun. A liar. A jerk. Yes, in other words, a true evangelical.
Mitt is a genius with accomplishments unseen in the political class. He is only trying to help…he could make a few more billion telling the political world to piss off…which he will eventually do cause the electorate is not worthy of a man of his abilities and stature.
Hope that helps.

Back on topic — it’s not a bad idea for Sarah to pick her spots and not let the leftards pick them for her. It would be a better idea for the GOP to show some brains and start attacking the Obots at every opportunity on every possible front. The Obots don’t do defense very well (unfortunately for our country).
