Obama on Iran: I cannot be silent, even though I was silent for three days

posted at 7:42 pm on June 15, 2009 by Allahpundit

High drama here as the president calls the Iranian government a “ticking time bomb” that must be dealt with now if America’s future is to be secure. No no, just kidding; that’s what he said about health care. Here we get a hard dose of Hopenchange caution-speak, acknowledging that the protesters have “inspired” Americans and that we respect Iran’s right to decide its own fate but that we’ll continue to pursue “tough” diplomacy with the regime on nukes no matter how odious Ahmadinejad might be. Hey, if we wanted a president who’d throw down the gauntlet and walk away in a situation like this, we would have elected the other guy. Sorry, Iranian kids.

Fun fact: Whereas The One was “shocked and outraged” by the murder of George Tiller, the most he can muster here for mass beatings and cold-blooded killings across Iran is that he’s “troubled.” Make of it what you will.

Very weak.

I think he actually would prefer that Amadinejad stay in power…I think he’s got a chuffy for him.

I vote Present forefully and with much empathy.

We are prepared to deal with who ever wins in Iran. Go figure it out and we will speak with whoever answers the telephone.

Mr. Joe on June 15, 2009 at 7:45 PM

Don’t get too upset Barry, go pet the puppy.

Actually, can we have the puppy as President, instead of you?

At least the puppy probably still has his balls attached.

When is this guy going to actually act presidential? Oh wait, he is acting…sorry, my bad.

clinker46 on June 15, 2009 at 7:49 PM

I posted this before, but he could have just plagiarized Lieberman… It would have been more inspiring. This is America’s great orator?

“Over the last six months, we have witnessed free and fair elections in Iraq and Lebanon, in which millions of people peacefully went to the polls, and in both cases, the Iranian-backed forces of extremism were decisively rejected at the ballot box.

“Unfortunately, on Friday, the Iranian people were denied this right, enjoyed by Iraqis and Lebanese and so many other peoples throughout the world, to determine the future of their country for themselves. Instead, through intimidation, violence, manipulation, and outright fraud, the Iranian regime has once again made a mockery of democracy, and confirmed its repressive and dictatorial character.

“We as Americans have a responsibility to stand in solidarity with people when they are denied their rights by repressive regimes. When elections are stolen, our government should protest. When peaceful demonstrators are beaten and silenced, we have a duty to raise our voices on their behalf. We must tell the Iranian people that we are on their side.

“For this reason, I would hope that President Obama and members of both parties in Congress will speak out, loudly and clearly, about what is happening in Iran right now, and unambiguously express their solidarity with the brave Iranians who went to the polls in the hope of change and who are now looking to the outside world for strength and support.”

Upstater85 on June 15, 2009 at 7:50 PM

He’s actually in mourning for his buddy Ahmadinejad, with all the trouble he has at the moment. I’m sure the fascist in chief is probably near tears for Ahmadinejad.

Can we send hopey to Iran?

Spiritk9 on June 15, 2009 at 7:50 PM

Okay I will say it for us. Obama’s own citizens fear him more than any foreign government ever will.

canditaylor68 on June 15, 2009 at 7:50 PM

What a lukewarm statement. Where is the moral clarity? Oh, I forgot, he doesn’t want to be too tough on A-Jad because he still wants to negotiate with him.

Damn the negotiations, call out the Iranian regime for what it is, a brutal, evil bunch of thugs. Oh, I know, that’s not sophisticated or nuanced enough for The One.

That was really difficult to watch. He rambled for 4:30. I almost fell asleep. If he could speak coherently without a teleprompter he could have said the same things in less than a minute. What a joke of a president we have. I have to say that I still really don’t know where he stands because he rambled on and lost me at about one minute in.

This is just part of the “great debate” that’s happening among the Iranian people, according to our President.

One side speaks with words. The other side replies with a volley of bullets.

So it’s kind of a “give-and-take”, don’t you agree?

Ah, the other guy. The “bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran” guy.

How different things might look today if we’d elected a guy who actually had the stones to stand up to these tyrants. Sorry, Iranian kids, but our kids here thought the “cool” black guy would be a better choice, and sadly, a lot of people who should have known better got swept up in the hype.

What in the world would regime change in Iran do to further Obama’s goals? That’s why he had nothing to say!

I don’t think this guy is so hard to figure out. If he’s concerned with Iran, it would only be because somehow it might lessen pressure on the jews in Israel, or weaken Arabs if Persia w/draws from the Pali love scene. He couldn’t give a rat’s behind about the safety of our troops in the ME, or the rights of Iranians.

Heh. Why would everybody be testing Obama all at once???? Hmm.

Ditto for N. Korea. Just what in the world is Kim doing that gets in the way of Barry re-distributing wealth and settling old scores? Barry doesn’t object to Kim, or Ahmad or Chavez. They don’t threaten anything he wants to accomplish. Joe the Plumber OTOH, or Sarah Palin,or Cheney, or Rush–those are his real enemies. elduende on June 15, 2009 at 8:05 PM

Too late about the bloodshed, President Obama… what is your Plan B?

Do you have an exit strategy?

I do believe that President Obama has sent out an SOS: Stuck On Stupid.

This has gone past nice words to be spoken with a thugocracy… Michael Totten and some others are comparing this to what happened in Eastern Europe, Philippines, Ukraine, except that there is no civility in the government in Iran. The Baseej are getting what they deserve for herding children into minefields and across no man’s land during the war… for persecuting people at work and home… and taking them to their lovely prisons where real torture goes on, that winds up with body parts removed and then lives snuffed out in darkness. This is not Communist regime that gives some pretense to humanity, it has no ‘common ground’ with human rights that can be seen.

If we cannot speak up for Liberty, Freedom and the rule of law that does not persecute based on religion, then what good are we as a Nation? I am ashamed for my Nation’s leadership as it puts a dark stain on us all in being able to say that Liberty and Freedom must be upheld… the time for being nice passed in 1979, 1983, 1984 with American diplomats and soldiers dead with the help of Imad Mugniyah in Beirut as Iran’s pawn. That is not ancient history and we damned well should speak up about how those that terrorized us need to be brought to account… but I have seen none of that from Democrats or Republicans, alike for decades. Now when the Iranian people do us a great service to call the regime out we quaver.

I support the Free People of Iran.

Even if my President is too cowardly to do so.
