I disagree with Limerick’s answer. Self-preservation has, historically, been an instinct that dictators feel particularly strongly. To a man who lives as a god, with the Sword of Damocles that is being deposed as supreme ruler hanging constantly over one’s head, maintaining one’s grip on power is the single biggest priority.

My mother’s Korean and she has the same problem.

That’s because the letter for ‘L’ sounds is also combined with the letter for ‘R’ sounds. I don’t know why: you’ll just have to ask Ju Sigyeong if you find a chance to.

To add to the nit-picking – there are plenty of “L”‘s in China. They pronounce the phoneme slightly differently than we do, but quite recognizably as “L”.

Thanks Obumble, great time to sack the F-22, missile defense, and a couple Carrier Battle Groups, I know, “smart power”. I think that the little fat man with the “big hair”, and Elton John glasses has your number, THANKS!

For once in his life, Joe Biden was right, he will be tested in his first six months. He has created, and sat idly by, while more crisis has fallen in the last sixty years, and he’s just getting started, his words.

He will mend the fences that Bush tore down, yeah right. Not only are our enemies laughing at us, he has
done all he can to piss off our allies, and it has worked.

A President with balls would be putting massive firepower along the DMZ, not necessarily manpower, but firepower. Two Carrier groups in the South China Sea, and four loaded Boomer’s. Make China reign him in, they do not want this on their doorstep, NoKo is asking for such a response. Cool heads are needed here, not ego-maniacs, on either side, but these people will only respect strength, HELLO OBAMA!

North Korea has declared that it will pursue nuclear weapons with abandon, which would force the US to stage nukes itself in South Korea and/or Japan as a deterrent.

Which nukes in South Korea would those be? Under Clinton all our tactical nukes were destroyed. That leaves everything else which needs only a Navy ship to launch or a B2 from the States to drop. No need for Japan to store anything – this isn’t WWII, Korea or Nam – all of which would have required something like you envision.

With these statements, we should expect the US to enthusiastically enforce the UN sanctions applied last week after Kim’s nuclear test and missile launches. Will Barack Obama order an aggressive policy of interdiction on North Korean shipping, as well as a return of North Korea to the list of terrorist-supporting nations? If Obama expects Kim to come back to the bargaining table with any intention of compliance, we will have to hit Kim where it hurts — on the few exports North Korea can sell.

Don’t hold your breath.

Stop bribing the Norks and put a Cuban Missile Crisis style blockade on them if necessary. China can decide if they want to keep their access to the lucrative U.S. market for their goods–or if they want to bring on the people’s revolution in China when their economy goes down the toilet if they back the Norks.

If the old crazy does decide to go out with a bang, or provide his munitions to those who would pay his price for a chance to really hurt the US… please don’t be one of those people who isn’t ready because you think it can’t happen. It costs $15 dollars to put enough fresh water in your basement to wait out the fallout decay, and then you won’t have to be one of the tragedies or one of the people breaking down my door for supplies.

What is the possibility that the NK munchkin is testing Ogabe, the UN or both? Their reaction to this threat could be substantial, but their recent records suggest the reaction will be tepid and gutless. If this is his gambit, and he is proven correct, this gives him considerable elbow room to do pretty much whatever he wants while showing himself to be a bulwark against perceived US imperialism.
Personally, I’m afraid for South Korea, not to mention the American military personnel who stand to be the first victims of a bite-sized madman.
