North Korea threatens nuclear war
posted at 10:11 am on June 15, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Perhaps Kim-Jong-Il got jealous of all the attention on Iran over the last couple of days and, in classic narcissist style, decided to throw a tantrum of nuclear proportions. Pyongyang threatened South Korea with a nuclear attack, alleging that the US has moved a thousand nuclear warheads onto the peninsula and has begun moving nukes into Japan as well:
North Korea has warned of a nuclear war on the Korean peninsula while vowing to step up its atomic weapons programme in defiance of new UN sanctions.
Today’s Rodong Sinmun, a state-run North Korean newspaper, claimed the US has 1,000 nuclear weapons in South Korea. Another state-run publication claimed that America had been deploying nuclear weapons in Japan as well.
North Korea “is completely within the range of US nuclear attack and the Korean peninsula is becoming an area where the chances of a nuclear war are the highest in the world”, the Tongil Sinbo said.
A spokesman at the US military command in Seoul dismissed the claims as “baseless”, saying Washington had no nuclear bombs in South Korea. US tactical nuclear weapons were removed from the country in 1991 following the cold war.
We moved those weapons out of the Korean Peninsula when events made them unnecessary. However, that may change. Pyongyang admitted for the first time that they have begun processing enriched uranium, as a parallel program to plutonium develpment, which the US and its allies have long suspected. North Korea has declared that it will pursue nuclear weapons with abandon, which would force the US to stage nukes itself in South Korea and/or Japan as a deterrent.
It would return us to a mutually-assured destruction (MAD) standoff, just as in the Cold War, but one side would truly be mad — or at least pathologically self-absorbed.
With these statements, we should expect the US to enthusiastically enforce the UN sanctions applied last week after Kim’s nuclear test and missile launches. Will Barack Obama order an aggressive policy of interdiction on North Korean shipping, as well as a return of North Korea to the list of terrorist-supporting nations? If Obama expects Kim to come back to the bargaining table with any intention of compliance, we will have to hit Kim where it hurts — on the few exports North Korea can sell.

The problem with the UNSC resolution is that it authorizes member states to board NK ships…if they get permission. If they don’t get permission, then they’re to order the ship to a place for inspection. The resolution doesn’t say what member states can do if the NK ship’s captain says “FU!”.

1. Blame Bush
2. Apologize for the USA, say we’ve lost our moral compass

4. Meet any threats with a strongly worded memo

Screw the UN. We need to impose our own set of sanctions on this posturing baboon:
1) All ships leaving or entering NORK are subject to inspection. No exceptions. Any ships rejecting being boarded for inspection should be sunk where they are.
2) All nuke facilities in NORK are to be immediately shut down, inspected, dismantled and shipped out of the country.
3) No more oil or other energy supplies from China, or anyone else, until Mr. Ronery complies.
4) If Mr. Ronery still wants to saber-rattle, then send in the Seals.
5) Anyone who balks at these sanctions (Russia, China, Iran, etc.) should be told they have 1 week to provide viable alternatives or just STFU while we take care of the situation.
Of course, this would take a President with cohones. Maybe it will happen when we finally elect one.

So we’ve got one horror movie-watching lunatic dynasty carrier, with a starving nation and an army about 10% casualties away from revolting, threatening nuclear war even though he’s got sufficient conventional missile capabilities to turn South Korea to scorched earth…
…and we’ve got a nutcase cultist, whose crazy Islamic faction was actually outlawed by the original Islamic revolution, believes that if he kills enough nonbelievers that his messiah will return to the earth, and doesn’t believe that homosexuals exist within Iran, carrying out coups to maintain power within a country that seems to want him dead…
…and some milquetoast in the White House hiding under his desk.
That tears it.

Upstater85 on June 15, 2009 at 10:42 AM
I disagree with Limerick’s answer. Self-preservation has, historically, been an instinct that dictators feel particularly strongly. To a man who lives as a god, with the Sword of Damocles that is being deposed as supreme ruler hanging constantly over one’s head, maintaining one’s grip on power is the single biggest priority.
There is a lot of misbehavior among dictators that the Left can stomach, but nuclear war is beyond the pale even to them. A nuclear detonation in South Korea would result in something more than just a strongly-worded letter, and Kim knows it. Kim also knows that the amount of foreign aid he receives is proportional to the amount of sabre-rattling he conducts–that, short of nuclear war, the foreign policy of the Left with respect to absolute despots such as himself is all carrots and no sticks. He is cynically exploiting the Left’s preference for peace at any price, and aims solely at ratcheting up said price by extortion.
In economics (and thus in game theory), to call someone a “rational actor” is not to say that they are sane in the psychiatric sense of the term; it is merely to say that they take the actions that maximize their own utility. For Kim, the utility-maximizing result is to receive additional foreign aid while remaining in office. For Ahmadinejad, the utility-maximizing result is to start a nuclear war to bring about the end times–he’s the one to be afraid of.

I hear Obama is sending an old-style typewriter to Japan as we speak. That way someone can type a strongly worded memo even after the EMP.
Daggett on June 15, 2009 at 10:42 AM
This is a rhetorical question. Of course Obama will do nothing. Today Obama announced he wants to give more power to the Federal Reserve. Obama cannot be bothered with tinhorn dictators. Obama is busy becoming the dictator of what used to be the most powerful country on the face of the earth. Small things like an Iran in chaos or North Korea threatening nuclear war is nothing to Obama, he is too busy eating his waffles. I think Obama has a call into Jimmie Carter asking what to do about that pesky Israel.
izoneguy on June 15, 2009 at 10:44 AM
It would, if 1) was done thoroughly. But like I said, there’s no one with the cohones to do _any_ of what I suggested.

Timothy S. Carlson on June 15, 2009 at 10:44 AM
Well All I can say is that I think that the North Korean regime has made a judgment call about the extent to which the Obama administration is willing to go in order to get them to tow the line. Essentially they see Obama as a pussy who doesn’t have the balls to take them on directly. Its like a game of chicken and the Norks are feeling confident that they can get Obama to blink first.
I mean if they had pulled this crap with Bush the first thing that would have happened would have been a couple of Carrier battle groups getting parked in the sea of Japan followed by a massive trade and economic embargo designed to starve the regime into submission.

I think this agreement has been violated numerous times, including the latest threat to South Korea (possible nuclear war). Not to mention the arms that have been shipped in (and out) of NORK without a whimper from anyone.
If you don’t want us to do in unilaterally, let’s get Japan and South Korea involved. They all have skin at stake in this fight.
But if they don’t want to do it – then yes, let’s do it ourselves. I’m sick of these tin-plate dictators giving us ultimatums. If we start standing up to them, the number of these types of incidents will diminish.

China is undoubtedly the key to this situation. The fact of the matter is that there isn’t all that much the filthy liar in the White House can do about this situation because the US really doesn’t have any leverage over an isolated rogue nation like North Korea. China does have that leverage.
Outside from the ineffective resolutions from the UN and various diplomatic stall tactics, the only thing the US can do is to protect South Korea. That means military operations from an administration who doesn’t seem to have much interest in the military. Iraq/Afghanistan have essentially been on autopilot since the filthy liar took office.
This is a new problem to test our unfit “Commander-in-Chief” if the situation escalates (and I hope it won’t), it will be very interesting to see how the bastard responds.
