Letterman to apologize to Palin tonight

The Times says he’s apologizing “again” but that implies that he apologized the first time, which he didn’t. He does tonight, but it’s still not clear that he understands what he’s apologizing for. Note to Dave: Yes, the “perception” that you were talking about Palin’s 14-year-old daughter getting knocked up made it a bad joke. The reality that you were talking about her 18-year-old daughter getting knocked up makes it a bad — albeit less bad — joke too. How about eschewing sex jokes about teens altogether in the future, champ? Full transcript via TV Week:
All right, here – I’ve been thinking about this situation with Governor Palin and her family now for about a week – it was a week ago tonight, and maybe you know about it, maybe you don’t know about it. But there was a joke that I told, and I thought I was telling it about the older daughter being at Yankee Stadium. And it was kind of a coarse joke. There’s no getting around it, but I never thought it was anybody other than the older daughter, and before the show, I checked to make sure in fact that she is of legal age, 18. Yeah. But the joke really, in and of itself, can’t be defended. The next day, people are outraged. They’re angry at me because they said, ‘How could you make a lousy joke like that about the 14-year-old girl who was at the ball game?’ And I had, honestly, no idea that the 14-year-old girl, I had no idea that anybody was at the ball game except the Governor and I was told at the time she was there with Rudy Giuliani…And I really should have made the joke about Rudy…” (audience applauds) “But I didn’t, and now people are getting angry and they’re saying, ‘Well, how can you say something like that about a 14-year-old girl, and does that make you feel good to make those horrible jokes about a kid who’s completely innocent, minding her own business,’ and, turns out, she was at the ball game. I had no idea she was there. So she’s now at the ball game and people think that I made the joke about her. And, but still, I’m wondering, ‘Well, what can I do to help people understand that I would never make a joke like this?’ I’ve never made jokes like this as long as we’ve been on the air, 30 long years, and you can’t really be doing jokes like that. And I understand, of course, why people are upset. I would be upset myself.
“And then I was watching the Jim Lehrer ‘Newshour’ – this commentator, the columnist Mark Shields, was talking about how I had made this indefensible joke about the 14-year-old girl, and I thought, ‘Oh, boy, now I’m beginning to understand what the problem is here. It’s the perception rather than the intent.’ It doesn’t make any difference what my intent was, it’s the perception. And, as they say about jokes, if you have to explain the joke, it’s not a very good joke. And I’m certainly – ” (audience applause) “- thank you. Well, my responsibility – I take full blame for that. I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.” (audience applauds) “Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the Governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.” (audience applause)
Does this mean the “Fire Letterman” protest tomorrow is canceled? Aw. While you ponder, here’s a related clip from today’s Cavuto reminding us once again that Fred Thompson is the luckiest man in the world. Exit question: What really motivated Letterman to do this? Sincere remorse? A cynical play for more ratings? Or the simple fact that he was starting to lose sponsors over it?

It looks like the same week Sarah Palin officially outsmarted the world’s largest corporation (ExxonMobil) she’ll also outlast Letterman.
See what happens when conservatives stand up for mwhat they believe in. Which way do you want to follow: the Palin eaample, where you stand up for principles or the David Frum – David Brooks – Mike Murphy way where you capitulate – the winning way or the easy route?

This is irrelevant. DO NOT WATCH CBS, NBC or ABC or any of their affiliates. This is war and we can put them out of business. Fox is still okay, but they are getting a bit wobbily. Cut off their advertising and their revenue. If they want to control us, we can control them with money. You with ME???

OK, lets give Letterman and his writing staff the benefit of the doubt here, and say he and they did write the joke for Monday’s show without checking the details of who was with Rudy at Yankee Stadium.
So on the Monday joke, with A-Rod and Palin’s daughter, they didn’t know Willow was at the game.
Now, you want to try and explain the innocence of Tuesday’s joke about Palin’s daughter and Elliot Spitzer. By the time Dave told that one, there was already controversy about Monday’s joke, and the fact that it was the 14-year-old who was at the game.
So on the first joke, let’s say Dave was uninformed, tastefulness of making a whole joke about an 18-year-old nonwithstanding.
On the second joke, Dave didn’t care that the joke was going to be perceived to be about the 14-year-old, because he didn’t think making whore jokes about Palin’s daughters could ever get him into serious trouble.

This is what happens when you really really really FIGHT against the left’s slander.
You have to fight it very hard.
If we fight this bs regularly, eventually, the enemy thinks twice or three times before they make what they previously thought was a freebie.

There is SO MUCH material to make fun of in the Obama Administration. I wouldn’t know where to start. It’s like that big room of candy in “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”.

More self-serving BS. Letterman still thinks it makes a difference that he intended to call the 18-year old daughter a whore instead of the 14-year old.

Letterman told the “joke” because he hates Governor Palin. Palin has a thick skin. So make a “joke” about the daughter.
Letterman has no class. He want’s to make “jokes” about politicians, go for it. LEAVE THE FAMILY OUT OUT IT YOU DUMB FUCK!
GarandFan on June 15, 2009 at 9:53 PM
Like I’ve said, I’m not defending the joke at all. A joke at Bristol Palin’s expense is a whole big bowl of offensive. I just don’t think it was told at the expense of a 14-year-old girl, and therefore, not a statutory rape joke.
If most people did perceive it that way, don’t you think A-Rod would have rightly complained? Because then, the joke would be that he was a rapist.
YYZ on June 15, 2009 at 9:53 PM

Good for Dave on (sorta) apologizing. I suspect Palin will let the embers die down on this one a little, but could be wrong.
Palin stood up and fought back, which she should continue doing whenever necessary as long as she stays in the public eye.

The general public doesn’t find Letterman’s rape joke to be very funny. I don’t think the CBS executives are laughing either. Then Dave went and told a whore joke about a 14 year old. And he called Sarah a slut. This is trashy stuff. He insulted flight attendants too. Wow.

The sad thing about this whole debaucle is that it allowed the MSM to totally ignore the great news coming out of Alaska regarding the progress on the pipeline project, the largest private energy project in the world. I was watching Campbell Brown for 5 minutes tonight (that’s my limit), and her panel of 4 men were suggesting that the push back was totally politically motivated by Sarah Palin, and that her numerous TV appearances reinforce that opinion. NO WORD, NO COMMENT that she was on with Matt and Blitzer to talk about the pipeline project, and that they initiated the talk about Letterman, not Palin. Nice “reporting”, Campbell!

Uh, he knows (and all MSM/liberals know) that they have used their platform to shape perception (and obscure facts) against conservatives for decades. Perception is their “bread and butter”; they trade in perception. And in this case, it was both: the perception matches the intent. A liar, he is.
IrishEyes on June 15, 2009 at 10:51 PM
It wasn’t a joke, Stupid. It was coarse, crude and cheap, but that is Letterman’s stock and trade. What is a worse commentary on the situation is that so many in the audience laughed. Wonder if they would have if the ‘joke’ was about their daughter.
Kissmygrits on June 15, 2009 at 10:52 PM
If Letterman were the moral paragon he attempts to pretend to now, the “joke” would never have come to his lips.
I am sick of liberal jerk-offs “apologizing” for saying what they think and reacting to backflash with some half-assed mea culpa. If you weren’t such a jerk in the beginning, you would never have said what you did.
This means nothing to me about Letterman redeeming himself. The double-standard about Palin, like her or don’t, compared to Michelle and her kids versus Bama’s is disgusting but par for the course with our oh-so-inlcusive and enlightened liberal wonks.
They will say or do anything as long as the “right people” are getting hurt.
Just like many people in Europe when it came time to herd their neighbors onto trains for the camping trip of a lifetime, in the 1930-40’s. That is why these people scare me, because they happily would tolerate if not partake in discrimination or violence against anyone not of their ilk, or whom their icons label targets.
Oh, yah, 10 years later the tears and apologies might flow, but it might not do me any good, being one of them clingy types and being stubborn enough that they might feel me a threat. Like speaking out on a forum like this…just who really is watching.
The DHS “study” of us crazy conservatives is just a straw in the wind of what the “liberal” mindset thinks of anyone disagreeing with their views. I won’t say it is like radical Islam, where you pay the jizya just to live, but who knows.
Just what won’t you do, Ms. Napolitano? You have nothing but your job, and your job depends on keeping Bama happy. Look at Walprin…that’s what happens. An otherwise vacant life, what do you have to lose?
Harry Schell on June 15, 2009 at 10:53 PM

Letterman apologized to Bristol? For what? His entire defense of his predicament is that he was aiming his joke at Bristol and therefore he is innocent of making a joke about raping a 14 year old. He aimed to smear Bristol and misfired. Is he apologizing for misfiring his hateful smear and missing Bristol? What a hollow apology.

I was a long-time fan of Dave, but rarely watch him anymore. I do know that these are not Dave’s words nor his sentiments. Someone at CBS was standing behind him with a gun to his head while he delivered this apology.

Notice the joke Bill Maher made was about public sex too. That was the point of the original Letterman joke that many people have missed in saying it was about rape. Palin’s daughter was very intentionally portrayed as such a nasty ho that she would have sex in public during a game. So now Maher is running with the theme and saying while Letterman is no A-Rod when it comes to public sex with her daughter, young hockey players might be a concern still. He may as well have said to keep her daughter away from attending NHL games instead of worrying about Dave.
So Letterman clearly isn’t apologizing for the fullness of the insult as I described and Maher is now trying to steal Letterman’s jokes!

Palin’s daughter (and Palin herself) are prone to pregnancy.

Is Daily Kos still declaring this a victory for Letterman?
Speedwagon82 on June 15, 2009 at 11:32 PM
Uh, he knows (and all MSM/liberals know) that they have used their platform to shape perception (and obscure facts) against conservatives for decades. Perception is their “bread and butter”; they trade in perception. And in this case, it was both: the perception matches the intent. A liar, he is.

Problem today is that perception is reality now.

If Bristol Palin really wants to escape national ridicule, why become a spokeswoman for abstinence? Is that really necessary? Everything before that was intruding on her privacy but when she joins the media circus, it makes it hard to keep her out of public ridicule.

Are there any other kind?

We have to get Letterman fired. We need to make the libs nervous. We need to show them once again, like actions against Rosie O’Donnell, that there are consequences to what is said and it won’t be tolerated. We let up on this and it will get worse.

Dave, you lying sack of $hit!
This is what he “checked”
From CBS news NY
Uh Dave, that’s CBS NY, your station reported that it was 14 year-old Willow! Not Bristol. It was there “top story”!
Dave this report was 2 days BEFORE you made your “rape” joke.
Do you really want us to believe that NO ONE at CBS knew that CBS reported the daughter was Willow?
Do you really think people are that stupid?
Are you that stupid?
This is his third attempt to spin this and once again he is lying.
3 strikes and you out.
